Q:
I’m planning to become a breeder and a trainer when I grow up, so I have so many questions… But I think the biggest one is: how do you get started?
Mariah Rain Lester
Redmond, WA
A: By learning as much as you can about everything you can! There are lots of publications that will keep you up to date on industry happenings but you also need a good base of practical experience.
Identify someone you admire and who you would like to emulate; see how they got to where they are. Try to get a job with them or even volunteer your time!
The more diverse your experience and knowledge is, the better; you will be able to form your own opinions on the best way of doing things. Work hard, ask why, be nice, and someone will be willing to give you an opportunity.

Q:
I am curious about why horses are called full siblings or half siblings, etc. only if they are out of the same dam. I realize stallions can sire over 100 foals a season and a mare only has one foal a year. There would be a lot of half siblings running around!
Andrea Neis
Santa Rosa, CA
A: In Thoroughbred breeding, the mare (dam) determines the “sibling status” for the foals that she produces. “Full siblings” are foals who have the same dam and the same sire. A “half sibling” is a foal that has the same dam, but different sire.
As an example, I’m thinking of PRIVATE STATUS, one of our favorite mares here at Lane’s End. Her first foal was SECRET STATUS (Winner of the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks!) who was sired by A.P. INDY. A few years later, PRIVATE STATUS produced ALUMNI HALL who was also sired by A.P. INDY. This makes SECRET STATUS and ALUMNI HALL “full siblings” as they have the same sire and dam. They have a “half sibling or half-sister” named PRIVATE GIFT who was produced by PRIVATE STATUS but sired by UNBRIDLED.
I am not sure what the scientific basis is for the “sibling” classification, but it makes sense that in order to be a “full” sister or brother, both mom and dad need to have provided the bloodlines.

R.I.P Wonderful Hootie. The horse who helped shape the Queen. No royal member could have asked for a better family. I’m sure Zenyatta appreciates you Hootie even now as you leave your body, and she will run beside you when her time comes too.

It’s at times like this when we really miss the voice of our Zenny/Dottie. They always used the right words to lift a heavy heart and ours are heavy with sorrow after hearing our beloved “Hootie” has passed.
May he run in the clouds forever and know the special joy he gave so many, including the great Queen, herself.

I was just thinking about RD win this weekend and
That Zenny was 5 before racing against the boys in BCC
And RD is only 4. I hope she races next year, too.
Have a great evening everyone !!!
Darlene Daniels
Sign,
I hope Royal Delta goes on to race more also. She is really something special. I am wondering if so many of our beloved TB’s are being raced and then retired too soon. I am not expertise enough by any means to really have an opinion. But, our dearest Zenyatta is a breaker of all that anybody probably ever they thought they knew about TB racing with the exception of David Ingorda who saw her for her greatness when others did not. Can you just imagine, seeing this lovely young filly with ring worm, buying her and the with the magnificent training of John Shirriffs and the fabulous jockey of Mike Smith, that little filly turns into ZENYATTA! I am still and always will be aghast with her greatness.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Dear Max,
Very well said about Zenny and her discovery, training and wonderful
career.
Was watching the BCC 2009 and BCC 2010, what an amazing mare and she
made the win in 2009 look effort less. The one in 2010, maximal effort with
so much heart, courage and determination she got from her Daddy, Street Cry.
Max
Sign. Street Cry is a wonderful and talented horse, but I feel that a lot of that Z grit and determination comes from her mother and her family, in particular Roberto. Roberto passed that will on to Big D too.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Max,
Did you know “V” did not run much (maybe 4 races) as she had soundness issues with both her ankles?
Street Cry was very underrated here in the US and he was a real talent on the track and in the shed, just not gorgeous.
Max
Sign. Yes, I knew that V was lightly raced, but her genes contain loads of talent going back to Man o’ War. Street Cry was probably overlooked for a time because he was a late developer. He did not race in the Classics at 3 because of health issues, but he came on at 4 to win the Stephen Foster. No question that his talent was passed on to Zenyatta and his sons. One of his daughters, Princess Highway, did very well at Ascot this year. She did not fare so well against Great Heavens in the Irish Oaks, but there will be more races later. Z’s parents are both great influences.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
OOPS !!!!!
Darlene and Max.
I think Royal Delta did just what Bill Mott wanted her to do, she demonstrated
her talent and superiority with a valient effort to win. He is a very strategic
trainer and really knows how to get his horses ready.

So very sad to hear of the loss of dear Hootie. How we loved to feed him carrots and mints on our many visits to Zenyatta. Such a sweet boy, so handsome, gentle and kind.
And how strange that we were talking about him at dinner tonight (before hearing of his passing) after attending the Del Mar auction. True Swither, a retired race horse, was auctioned as a pony horse as Hip #1 with the proceeds going to horse rescue charities. This triggered a discussion of our favorite pony horses — Lava Man and beloved Hootie.

The Kennedy’s and all Zsters,
Yes, Very, very, sad news. I was just thinking of him and looking at photos of Zenyatta with Hootie just a few days ago, then I heard the news last night about dear Hootie. RIP beloved Hootie.

The Kennedys in San Diego
Max, Lava Man is a very happy, indulged guy — loves his role in the O’Neill barn. He was always taken to I’ll Have Another to calm him when IHA was stressed — worked every time. My Dear Zenyatta Friends,
It is certainly wonderful to be writing to you all again. I have missed you and what to thank all of those who kept me in your thoughts. Mother and I are home in Colorado safe and sound after an amazing three weeks on the road. I was blessed once again to be sharing such an adventure with my beloved mother. The time we have spent together is truly priceless. Having my dear friend Shari Voltz join us was very special and we also got to meet Debbie Gustafson for dinner one night. Too fun!! (Keta: I do not know how I forgot that you also lived in Lexington, but Trina reminded me. I am so sorry we did not get together. I hope we can do so in the future. ) The time I spend in Versailles/Lexington each year is very special to me and brings me so much joy. I tried to show Shari the Kentucky that I love, taking her to some of my favorite places and including some new destinations as well. We ended up going to 17 farms as well as Keeneland and Churchill Downs. I know Shari has posted some impressions herself about our time together; my hope is that she enjoyed it very much. There are so many wonderful stories I want to share with you about the people, places and of course beautiful horses we were able to see. I will be writing and posting them soon.
I have been trying to read some of the entries here on Zenyatta’s site, but I fear I am not going to be able to get caught up on all the past posts. I did call our Trina and she brought me up to date on most of what was happening and has been kind enough to also share poems I have missed. I can’t wait to get back in the grove of reading what all of you are up to and posting regularly. So much wonderful information and friendship is shared here. The pictures of Zenyatta and Baby Z have been great. Thanks to Lane’s End for the “Ask The Experts” posts.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY : Kathryn Cogswell, Pati, Sharon in Seattle, Arlene Nelson, Kathy Baldwin, Sue Colvin, Katherine Wheeler and the beautiful Ann Moss!!!
To my terrific SIS, Peggy N, how I wish I had been closer to Atlanta so that we could have celebrated your special day together. It would be so amazing to meet you face to face!!!
To Susan Carothers, I hope your birthday was special. I am sorry that we were not able to get together while I was in Nashville. I do hope you got the message I left for you. I know you have suffered the loss of some of your beloved fur babies and my thoughts have been with you. I can still picture that day meeting you in Tennessee, driving down the lane and into the barn area where Pepsi and Rootbeer lived. I was welcomed by this small, red coated, white whiskered old fellow named Chester. He was such a sweetheart and his story was heartbreaking. But you were there for him, just as you were for all the others that needed your care. It takes hard work and dedication. You and othes like you are hero’s to those animals in need and to me.
Terry Crow: Thank you for your continued humor!
Karen Gogue: I understand you have been under the weather and I have been praying for a speedy recovery. You give so much to others, I hope you are taking care of yourself and are doing much better!
I am still working on plans to attend Breeder’s Cup 2012 and can’t wait to meet some of my dear, dear, Zsters!!!!
This post is getting fairly long so I will end for now, but I do want to address some of the things that have been happening in Colorado that have touched my life as well as many, many others.
Unfortunately the state that I love has experienced some terrible blows during the last several weeks; I have shed tears and said many prayers. Before I left on my trip, my own little town of Cedaredge was hit by a forest fire just a few miles outside of town. We could see the smoke billowing into the sky and count the seeming endless fire engines that raced past the bank. Helicopters and planes flew overhead dropping water. You cannot help but be frightened when you think about the wind changing directions or the fire becoming uncontrollable and turning toward the town. Our courageous and hardworking volunteer fire department responded quickly and called in assistance immediately from 5 other local communities. Working together, they handled the situation with no loss of life or homes. When you see the area burned, it was miraculous.
During the first week of vacation, the Waldo Canyon fire erupted in Colorado Springs. The lives touched were many including the son of the marvelous lady who owned the inn we were staying at in Versailles. He was living there and involved with the ministry. As many of you know, my nephew is a firefighter for the forest service and my first thoughts went to him and his safety. We called my brother immediately to make sure Justin was alright. Thank God he was. Everywhere we went in Kentucky when people found out we were from Colorado they expressed their heartfelt sadness for what was happening. It was very touching to see the concern and feel the care.
And finally the unspeakable horror and evil demonstrated in Aurora, Colorado. My heart has broken for all those killed and injured in this terrible act, as well as their families and friends. We often feel that today’s society is steading heading downward. And we see or hear about human acts which shock and sadden us; but I have to believe there are still far more men and women living there lives who do care about others and this world of ours. It is a time to reflect on love, not hate. A time to come together and work together for the betterment of all and to remember what is truly important in life. Imagine what we could accomplish!!
RIP Hootie
All my love to each and every one of you,
Hugs, Dawn

I so love this picture of Zenyatta, 12Z and Matt in the spring. Does anyone know if Matt will be Zenny’s “forever” man at Lane’s End. I know he walked her over to the foaling barn and in pictures is still seen with her and 12Z. I wonder if he will be leading her to whatever paddock and barn she will be in while being a “mom in waiting” again? I hope she will be in the paddock she and TT shared. She seemed to really like it and had great views of everything. She likes to know what is going on.
Thanks again to all for your words of kindness for we Coloradoans experiencing another tragedy. I actually think the whole country is trying to process how this senseless act of violence could happen. After all, we are the United States.

Here are today’s redneck jokes. You night be a redneck if you have been run out of your own yard by roosters. You might be a redneck if you have ever emailed your social security and bank account information to a Nigerian prince. You might be a redneck if your two front teeth swivel like a saloon door. You know you are going to a redneck college when the football team scores more points in a game than they did on their SAT’s. You might be a redneck if you have spent more on doghouse improvementrs than you have your own house. You might be a redneck if you still have an 8-track player in your house or car. You might be a redneck if you repair your styrofoam cooler with duct tape. You might be a redneck if you caused an airplane to make an emergency landing after you passed gas.

Dear TC, GP:
Great jokes today and they made my day a little brighter, the last one is the best.
Did you know duck tape comes in a black and white skunk print ???? (Staples, office supply)
We need to get you some for future wrappings !!!!
Max
Sign. This black and white skunk duct tape sounds elegant in its own way. I will check this out the next time that I hit Staples. You can never have too much duct tape.

I think maybe we could get TC a hard hat and
cover it with skunk pattern duck tape for TC, GP
To wear. PETA would have nothing to say and we could
Even put glitter on the hat so TC could wear it when
He goes shopping in Hollywood, Rodeo drive ????

When the big one hits, the only two things to survive will be cockroaches and duct tape.
Max
Terry Crow. Only duct tape. It nails the cockroaches in its unyielding grasp. There is nothing that duct tape cannot do.
Ann
Sign,
We are digging the cheetah design tape from Staples.
TC,funny jokes, thanks.
The chickens around the corner got mad at us last week. We needed to put the camo gloves on to retrieve their eggs.
The Del. and MD. boardwalks also report a short supply of Salt Water Taffy. Seems folks wearing skunk hats are buying it up left and right. The fillies at Monmouth and Del are using it to hang their posters of a Handsome Mike, who is coming their way. We have our Magic Mike, they have Handsome Mike!
Max
Ann. That settles it. Cheetah duct tape. I am heading to Staples this weekend for supplies.

Ann,
Isn’t all the duct tape at Staples awesome. Wonder why they have
such a creative supply.
Max and TC, GP
You are both hilarious !!!!
Max
Ann and Sign. I checked out Staples on line. It is duct tape heaven. I have been restricting my duct tape purchases to silver only. No more. Thanks for the tips. Life just got a whole lot more interesting duct tape wise.

A really nice tribute to “TACO”, RA/CURLIN’s son. They are going to do give away’s at the SPA a special place for both Curlin and Rachel, reveal the name before the Curlin Stakes and they had Rachel pick the winner. Also a visit with Rachel and “TACO”.
Wonder where they go all these ideas ?????
So glad we can keep up with RA and Zenny !!!

Sign. Hope that she does well in her upcoming race. She is a beauty. I like her name too, especially in 90+ weather.

For sure and you are having that in Canada.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
One of my favorite places in Canada is Whistler,
British Columbia. Great outdoors summer and winter
at a gorgeous resort.
Also love Banff and Lake Louise, wonderful in summer
And winter !!!!

Winter Memories, what a great name. I still have a few of those.

They could AI him but then none of his offspring could run, but they could be Grand Prix jumpers or dressage horses or eventing horses.

Dear Max,
This article explains War Emblem’s breeding issues; he was the bachelor stallion
intimidated by the harem stallions (those already experienced ). The bachelor stallion
stays outside the herd and is often intimidated by the harem stallion, who has a bunch of mares that follow him. They put WE with a group of mares so that he had a harem,
which boosted his self confidence, they also gave him hormones and alter the postion of the mare he was breeding to be more receptive like they are in the wild.
No mention of pasture breeding by the experts from New Bolton. The vet seeing him has devoted her entire career to breeding stallion behavior. Very interesting article.

Sign. This is a very interesting article. The US doctor sounds like she had a talk with War Emblem and has dealt expertly with his issues. I hope that all goes well for him now.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Yes, I do think she thoroughly evaluated him and discussed all sides
of his “complaints” about those harem “guys” with him and developed
a great situation for him. He did not even have to recruit his harem,
they were all paraded in front of him and he got to chose. What a great
option for a guy, who looks like him, WOW WOW WOW !!!
Max
Sign. Handsome and smart too.
Ann
This War Emblem played his cards right, w/ this ” Dr. Ruth” lady of the horse world.
He is the Hugh Hefner of the horse world, w/ his own Play Horse Mansion.
Hope he got a nice smoking jacket w/ that deal, and of course monogrammed w/ WE.
War Emblem, you are one smart cookie. Good job big guy. You are even better looking than Hef!
Now this Dr. Ruth lady….can you imagine ,being in college and telling the family…..I am going to concentrate my studies on studly behavior.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Really really really cute comments ANN.
War Emblem is one very handsome, talented, manipulative guy.
Too smart for his own good, but probably low on testoserone.
Terri Z
It’s sounds like they are well on their way to resolving his issues. I don’t know, but I think being in a foreign land, with different surroundings, language differences, etc., might have effected his confidence.
