Q:
I work around horses myself. Herd dynamics have always been an interesting thing for me—the way certain horses interact with one another and the hierarchies they establish can be fascinating. Sometimes horses who show a certain personality around their human caretakers take on a completely separate personality among their own kind. My question, then, is how does Zenyatta fit into her herds, past and present? Is she a definite alpha mare no matter who she’s with, low (wo)man on the totem pole, or somewhere in the middle, and how does this compare to her personality around her human handlers and caretakers?
Kelli Clark
Toms River, NJ
A:There is definitely a hierarchy and a pecking order established in herds, and once that is established we don’t have too many issues. Surprisingly, for a horse that was so dominant on the racetrack, Zenyatta is not aggressive or competitive in any way whilst in the herd. She is a lovely mare to be around with a very kind temperament that transfers to both horse and human contact. It is quite common to see her hanging out with more than just her own foal!
One of the most important aspects of farm management is keen observation and making the necessary adjustments to keep the horses happy in their environment. This in turn leads to fewer health issues and injuries. Mares that are older or are less mobile are placed in smaller groups so that they are not competing for feed in any way.

Q:
Is there a deadline for naming Baby Z or any Thoroughbred baby? I know there are guidlines as far as the actual name goes, but I’m wondering if there is a time limit.
Katie Speake
Topeka, KS
A:Selecting names for Thoroughbreds is surely one of the most important (and rewarding) aspects of ownership! Most owners name their horses between their yearling year and February 1st of the horse’s two-year-old year. After February 1st of the two-year-old year, a small naming fee must be paid to The Jockey Club. The Jockey Club Registry website (www.jockeyclub.com) lists The American Stud Book Principal Rules and Requirements. Rule # 6 in the American Stud Book, relating to naming, lists all of the requirements and rules for submitting names for Thoroughbreds. An actual time deadline for naming is not stated, but all Thoroughbred horses must be named before they can enter a race.

Dana Dream will defend her title in the ARC?
Any news on that ???
Max
Sign. I think that the plan is that she will go to the Arc. She went to Japan last fall and did not do so well. Since her return to Europe, she has bounced back.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Max
I remember hearing she went to Japan rather than
Coming to the Breeders Cup. It is so hard for the
Horses to travel internationally on a plane for so
Many hours and be at top performance. I think
That is what happened to BC and that soft turf has them
Pushing off harder from the rear and probably why
She tore muscles again.
Will definately watch the Arc again this year.
Max
Sign. One of BC’s problems was the turf at Ascot. She was used to our kind of turf which is not undulating hills like the English courses. Although they call them flat races, they are anything but flat. They are very challenging and you have to have the practice to do that kind of racing. The end of that Ascot race caused BC to use muscles that were probably not necessary for her to use in her other races and she sustained an injury. All the more reason to have respect for what she did in that race. She is one brave and talented horse. She also knows how to deal with the guys. Z could also deal with the boys. I think that they were mostly all afraid of her size and charisma. Not certain but she might have impressed even Big D.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Oh yes, Max. Euro flat racing is only flat compared
To Steeplechasing, jumps.
Those indulating up and down hills and dales are
Brutal on a horse. And to end the race on an uphill
For a horse not used to that was brutal on her
Rearend, pushing off on the soft turf and having
To go uphill. She really showed her talent and specialness.

Hey Sign & Company!
Actually, Danedream is running in the George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes this coming Saturday in England. It’s going to be SOME race, with Danedream, Sea Moon (yup — related to Sea The Stars — same dam), St. Nicholas Abbey and my favourite, the wonderful Nathaniel all fighting it out! Here’s a link: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/horseracing/9404205/Star-studded-field-including-Nathaniel-and-Sea-Moon-revives-King-George-fortunes.html
…..AND….it looks like Aidan O’Brien & the Coolmore gang have still another superstar in the form of the 2 year-old, Mars (yup — another by Galileo!) and here he is winning his very first race….on the dirt!!! (in the UK)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=987FK6WOlZ4
Methinks that Coolmore might have the Kentucky Derby in mind for this chap….or perhaps, as starters, the BC Juvenile!!!!
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Wow Abigail
Thanks so much for the great update on Danedream,
Boy she has her work cut out for her with that field. I guess
It will be on HRTV Sat.
Max
Abigail. Good luck to Danedream. I hope that she wins.
As to Mars, he is going to need a lot of luck to get the roses. That track in the video is poly and it looks to be a thinner kind than US poly. There is also a huge difference to the dirt at Churchill Downs which is a quirky track at the best of times. No non North American trained horse has ever won the Kentucky Derby. To win that race you have to pay your dues in the US by training on dirt tracks with corners in the US. Henry Cecil said that he would never allow Frankel to race at CD because of its dirt and layout. It’s a very tough race course for a foreign horse. The next KD winner is probably training somewhere in the US, not Ireland.

I would be a lot happier about this if it wasn’t a blanket change concerning the names of Oak Tree Racing Association’s titles for its stakes races. Frank Stronach literally cheated Oak Tree out of its racing dates so he could eventually host the BC and now it appears that he is erasing any remnants of it.

SHACK REALLY FOUGHT HARD IN THE MET MILE, SO GLAD ROMANS IS LEAVING HIM A MILE OR LESS !!!
“Romans said that it took Shackleford a little bit longer than usual to recover from his hard-fought victory over Caleb’s Posse in the Grade 1 Met Mile at Belmont on May 28. Romans said it has been only in the last couple of weeks where Shackleford has shown his old spunk. On Saturday, Shackleford worked five furlongs in 1:00.20 at Churchill Downs, the fastest of 12 moves at the distance.
“That Met Mile performance took a little bit out of him,” Romans said. “We gave him a little break at WinStar. He never got back on his toes until the last couple of weeks. Today, he was back on his game. That was his old self.”
Romans said Shackleford, last year’s Preakness winner, would work again next Saturday at Churchill.”

I am considering beginning a blog for Gus and SHERR. If I did, would anyone still be willing to visit the site? It is just for SHERR and maybe a few other things like jumping and flat work information from my lessons. It would also enable people to find pictures, information, and a link to donate to SHERR a lot easier. It will also feature future projects and events for those who are close enough to visit or are willing to donate to projects like the basket I gave to Ginny.
Jumped on Thursday, and it was the best result to date! We got over all the jumps perfectly, we got our lead changes spot on, and finished with a good forward pace and in fact, we almost galloped the whole course! Hollywood Park: Mitchell makes triumphant return to track
By Steve Andersen Daily Racing Form 07/15/2012 7:14 PM
INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Sunday’s closing day at Hollywood Park was a family day for trainer Mike Mitchell.
Mitchell, 64, made his first appearance at the races since he underwent surgery for a brain tumor June 29. He won the day’s feature race, the Grade 3 Sunset Handicap with the heavily favored Dhaamer, who was ridden by his future son-in-law, Julien Leparoux.
Mitchell was joined at the race by his wife and two adult daughters. They also were at his hospital bedside on June 30, when the family rooted home the Mitchell-trained Camp Victory in the Grade 1 Triple Bend Handicap for sprinters.
In coming weeks, Mitchell will remain in the Los Angeles area. He says he faces further medical treatment for the effects from the tumor, including radiation and chemotherapy.
“I’ve got a few follow-up treatments they want me to do,” he said. “I’ve got radiation five days a week. I can do the chemotherapy at home.”
Mitchell will leave the bulk of the training to assistant Phil D’Amato and his son-in-law, Craig Rounsefell. Since his operation, the three have been in contact several times each day.
“I’m in great shape with Phil and my son-in-law,” he said.
Mitchell is the all-time leading trainer at Del Mar, but will have a limited presence at the meeting this year. He is aiming to attend the races more frequently from mid-August forward.
“I’m hoping for the second half, but I’ve got to listen to my doctors and listen to my body,” he said. “They want me in the area for a while.”
Even though he will not be there this week, Mitchell will be active. He has runners Wednesday and Thursday.

Debbie G., I liked all your series of puns, thanks.
Max & Barbara: Yes, Duct Tape & WD-40. But I also continue to find new ways of fixing things with rubber bands, twist ties, and/or picture-hanging clay.
Terry Crow, you wrote the other day: “You might be a redneck if your pillow has ever crawled out from under you.” (https://staging.zenyatta.com/experts/ask-the-experts-4/comment-page-2#comment-159867). Wal, that has never happened, and it would creep me out. But it’s about like what I wrote about in detail awhile back, when I woke 30 yrs. ago to find I had crunched a bug in my ear in the middle of the night. Not to be forgotten!
You might be a redneck relative, if you cut the moldy parts off of bread slices, and old chunks of cheese, so you can toast what’s left, for breakfast. You might be a redneck relative, if your home seems unusually tidy to a visitor, except when she opens a pantry door, innumerable piles of plastic & paper bags, empty containers & lids, and whatever else you needed to hide, come tumbling out. You might be a redneck relative, if your laundry pile normally sits & “grows” in the middle of the living room, so you can use the sniff test each morning, to decide what is still fit to wear to work that day.
Ann
Vicki…haha,
Yep, the pantry door gets em all the time!
Yeah, Vicki is back in style.
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Ann and Terry, thanks. It’s good to be back. Although it’s harder to keep up with the flow, with all these “pages of comments” for each post. Like Abigail, I like the free-for-all aspect of comments that wander thru a multitude of topics, where I can search up and down the whole thing. I don’t really want to narrow my focus to one Forum topic, like the Web Team suggested below. I suppose we could have a Forum topic called “Chat-fest” or “Diary talk”, and then just have at it. This feels like a more natural way of conversing. Zenyatta runs through the whole thing, she’s our commonality, but we do cover a lot of other stuff.
Ann
Well said Vicki. One thing leads to another, huh? Wait, isn’t that in a song?
Yes, I love how we can let it flow and not have to “stay on topic”. Who can stay on topic, esp. when it comes to talking horses! HA!

Good news about UR.
@Vicki B. near Hollywood Park–love the redneck jokes from everyone. Many a time I saw my mom cut the mold off cheese or bread. She grew up out of the Great Depression. I do agree with Tom Brokaw on that one. They WERE the Greatest Generation.

Dear Barbara Wood,
I wholeheartedly agree — my parents were of the Greatest Generation, too. Tom Brokaw is definitely 100% correct.

Yes, Barbara, my mom and dad would never have thought otherwise, too. My dad remembered when a loaf of bread cost a penny. My mom said during the Depression, she once saw some people camped in a ditch, (sorry, folks!) roasting a cat, which seemed to shock her. She remembered potatoes for dinner, fried potatoes for breakfast, followed by potato sandwiches for lunch, wrapped up in newspaper, and tied with a string. It WAS a different era.

@Kera-Sorry I missed your birthday. I hope all of your presents were wrapped with duct tape and hope you had a good one. Here is a short horse joke. A guy walks into a bar and sees that a horse is tending bar, apron and all, wiping out the glasses. HJe stares at the horse for a while without saying a word. The horse breaks the silence by saying “Hey buddy, what’s the matter? You can’t believe that a horse can tend bar?” “No,” the guy sahys, I just can’t believe that the dog sold this place.” Today’s redneck jokes. You might be a redneck if all of your tupperware is old butter containers. You might be a redneck if none of the tires on your car is the same size. You might be a redneck if your side-by-side refrigerator consists of two igloo coolers. You might be a redneck if you think Purina is some kind of ex-lax. You might be a redneck if you’ve ever pulled a tooth because it ws too white. You might be a redneck if your underwear is roughly the same color as the Mexican flag.

Made me laugh, Terry! “if your side-by-side refrigerator consists of two igloo coolers.” My friends visiting just went back to England, and they feel that way about their reefer — the fridges in England are half the size or less, of what we have here. Their whole fridge is below the counter, kinda like a camp or office fridge. So my 31-1/2 inch wide, not “large” by American standards, appeared “cavernous” to them.

Great jokes, Terry! I have some friends that use old butter and whipped cream containers as tupperware. I must admit I’ve used them a few times myself!

The dog….good one TC. Remember the painting of the dogs playing poker?
We are now in major Hurricane season and thanks for the reminder! Been my reefer many times, too many.

John Shirreffs has a great take-off of that painting hanging in Barn 55 outside his office–it shows horses playing poker! Too cute!

Trina. Thanks for this information. Love it.

Thanks, Trina! That puts a smile on my face. Would love to see the poker playing picture in Barn 55!

Zenyatta's Web Team
Hi everyone,
There seems to be some confusion about Blog posts on Zenyatta.com. I wrote the following in response to a question in the Forum and thought it would be helpful to post here as well.
Let me attempt to clarify any confusion about the Blog:
• “Ask The Experts” and “News” are simply categories within the Blog, as is “Z’s Diary.”
• The main blog page (https://staging.zenyatta.com/blog, accessed by clicking on BLOG in the main menu at the top of the site) always displays the ten most recent blog posts, sorted by post date. The most current blog post is always first.
• You can browse past blog entries, including Z’s Diary, by using the menu on the right hand side. You can look at all posts from a specific category by clicking on the category title, or you can jump backwards to posts from any given month.
• Different categories do not represent different sites—they are simply labels assigned to our posts to signify the type of information they contain. We only have three categories at the moment, but we may add more in the future. This is not meant to cause confusion, but to allow us to feature different types of content in the blog.
• We don’t plan to close comments on older blog posts in order to force our readers to comment in the same place. We would like all posts to remain accessible to Zenyatta’s fans world-wide, and we invite feedback on all information we share.
• Blog comments are generally not the best place for ongoing conversations, especially about topics unrelated to the content of the post. We developed the Forum so that you would all be able to create an account, have the ability to contact other members, and have a constant place to check in.
• Forum discussions have an advantage over blog comments as they can stay open and current indefinitely—as long as new comments are added, a discussion will remain at the top of the list. You can also bookmark any forum discussion and sign up to be notified when new comments are added. Bookmarked discussions are always accessible from the sidebar when you are logged into your account. **We have noticed that most forum members don’t use the bookmark capability. It works well—just click on the grey star to the right of the discussion title. Give it a try!**

Thanks. We like the forum…lots of interesting stuff there.

Hi again Zen-sters. I’ve gotta say that I love how this blog reminds me of our Zen’s Diary chats. I still miss the Diary — but mostly, I miss ALL OF YOU!!!! I came to the Diary almost every day and loved how our discussions just meandered along, from this to that, over many days sometimes.
Well, it’s been steamy here in Montreal too. Today it was in the nineties but felt like 100F. My poor Daisy Doodlebug is a bit like a 3 year-old kept inside with a cold on these days. Kind of at loose ends. But she really is a Northern Girl because she reviles the humidity just like most Canucks! (We love the summer & the sun but the humidity sucks!!!!)
I’ve been doing quite a lot of art since I retired. Mostly multi-media stuff that uses all kinds of materials and really enjoying it. I’ve also been writing on THE VAULT, although at a pace that’s comfortable for me. I even put THE VAULT on Twitter!!!! The latest is on Frankel — the man & the horse who is his namesake. Hence the title. Don’t forget to buzz over to THE VAULT when you have a chance — it came to be largely because of Dottie, Zenny and all of you. Here’s the link:

Love and hugs to all, my dear friends. You are always in my thoughts and in my heart.

So good to hear from you.
Take care and stay cool!

The Vault is a treasure. Thanks Abigail. Stay cool up there, our Northern neighbor.

The Paulick Report is having a really cool contest. They had their readers pick their favorite 64 horses in history and they’re having a bracket contest, kind of like the NCAA basketball tournament. You go in and pick your favorite horse in each “game” until you get to the championship. I, of course, picked Zenyatta to win the championship, but she had to beat Secretariat in the Final Four. (Sorry, I don’t know how to post links! Maybe if someone else here has seen it, they can post the link.)
I’m so glad that everyone liked my puns! Here’s the rest of them:
We’re going on a field trip to the Coca Coca factory. I hope there’s no pop quiz.
When you get a bladder infection urine trouble.
I got a job at a bakery because I kneaded dough.
Haunted French pancakes give me the crepes.
Velcro? What a rip off!
A cartoonist was found dead in his home. Details are sketchy.
Venison for dinner again? Oh deer!
The earthquake in Washington obviously was the government’s fault.
Be kind to your dentist. He has fillings, too.
Why did the can crusher quit his job? Because it was soda pressing.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Very cute idea about the bracket contest by Paulick, Zenny is great but winning by
30 lengths in the Belmont (Secretariat) maybe too much for her to overcome especially since she was coming from behind and 20 lengths was a big challenge for her in the BCC 2010.
Secretariat is hard for any champion to beat, however, John Henry, Seattle Slew,
Holy Bull all might give him a great challenge. Oh and California’s Silky Sullivan, too.
Great Puns today.
carol in utah
Love Silky….such a closer…did not get there first as much as Z….but to win from so far behind ….sometimes 40 lengths…in a 6 furlong race…what a rocket
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Oh yes, Silky was different from Zenny. He was
Like a freight train coming 30 to 40 lengths.
Zenny was lazy at the start and used her turn
Of foot to get her to win by a small margin.
Silky could not take his game out of California
Either, where he was best.

We need all the laughs we can get. Thanks!

Those are great Debby.
Go UK! Cute for you to find the bracket contest, thanks. Have you ever participated in these bracket things during B-ball…….hahaha. I keep it down to about 5/season.
Debbie G/Kentucky
Yes, Ann, I fill out a bracket every year religiously. I am a college basketball fanatic. I take off work most of the month of March so I can sit home and watch the NCAA tournament. You would think that someone who is so crazy about it would be better at picking their brackets, though. I pick Kentucky to win it all every year, no matter how good their team is. Luckily it worked out for me this year! LOL
Ann
Cute Debbie. Once our tour guide, on the UK campus, knew we were not Duke fans…tour was super! Our state practically shuts down during ACC tourney time. I love it too. Thanks for taking care of our guy Wall.

Dear Lanes End,
I just got done purusing Zenny and 12 Zenny’ s photos. If there is enough interest
in purchasing the photo of 12 Z and 12 SM on the #3 Expert. It is just so darn cute.
The are looking so tired and very cute. Could it be made available for us??
I know you get a lot of requests and may be there will be cuter ones when they get
older, It is just so precious and goes along with the halter tugging and then the
innocent looks. TOO CUTE. Thanks so much for sharing the life of 12 Z with all of us.

Sign. Great idea.

I love it too Sign. It says all about them, at this age.
