Q:
I work around horses myself. Herd dynamics have always been an interesting thing for me—the way certain horses interact with one another and the hierarchies they establish can be fascinating. Sometimes horses who show a certain personality around their human caretakers take on a completely separate personality among their own kind. My question, then, is how does Zenyatta fit into her herds, past and present? Is she a definite alpha mare no matter who she’s with, low (wo)man on the totem pole, or somewhere in the middle, and how does this compare to her personality around her human handlers and caretakers?
Kelli Clark
Toms River, NJ
A:There is definitely a hierarchy and a pecking order established in herds, and once that is established we don’t have too many issues. Surprisingly, for a horse that was so dominant on the racetrack, Zenyatta is not aggressive or competitive in any way whilst in the herd. She is a lovely mare to be around with a very kind temperament that transfers to both horse and human contact. It is quite common to see her hanging out with more than just her own foal!
One of the most important aspects of farm management is keen observation and making the necessary adjustments to keep the horses happy in their environment. This in turn leads to fewer health issues and injuries. Mares that are older or are less mobile are placed in smaller groups so that they are not competing for feed in any way.

Q:
Is there a deadline for naming Baby Z or any Thoroughbred baby? I know there are guidlines as far as the actual name goes, but I’m wondering if there is a time limit.
Katie Speake
Topeka, KS
A:Selecting names for Thoroughbreds is surely one of the most important (and rewarding) aspects of ownership! Most owners name their horses between their yearling year and February 1st of the horse’s two-year-old year. After February 1st of the two-year-old year, a small naming fee must be paid to The Jockey Club. The Jockey Club Registry website (www.jockeyclub.com) lists The American Stud Book Principal Rules and Requirements. Rule # 6 in the American Stud Book, relating to naming, lists all of the requirements and rules for submitting names for Thoroughbreds. An actual time deadline for naming is not stated, but all Thoroughbred horses must be named before they can enter a race.

A Birthday Poem for Ann Moss
(July 14, 2012)
Dearest Ann,
I hope you’ll today feel as divinely fine
As you made Judy Gadwood feel
At the Lady’s Secret 2009
As Judy to us did reveal—
That was when you Judy
With her Queen Zenyatta poster did see,
And, after Z’s thrilling victory
Where Z at the finish outran
The gallant St. Trinians,
Judy did out of the blue
On her shoulder receive
A light tap of your hand,
And you made her feel so grand
As you proceeded her to invite
Into the winner’s circle with you–
What a marvelously kind thing to do!
And similarly imagine my own delight
When recently
At Hollywood Park
While you were in the paddock
Awaiting the arrival of Sister Moon,
You soon approached
Our little Z-ster flock
Gathered at the rail
And —be still my heart!!—
ME with birthday salutations
So graciously did hail!
My heart indeed leapt for joy!
We did then ourselves avail
Of this opportunity
The subject to broach
About a name for Zenny’s darling boy,
Of whom we’re all so fond,
And you so generously did respond
With some of the many details
The selection will entail,
And we excitedly do wait
To know which name will prevail!
Dearest Ann, we want to thank you
For all that you are
And all that you do—
You are in so many a way
A bright shining star!
In closing I wish to convey
Our sincerest wishes for you today
To have a most splendid birthday,
And we pray
You’ll enjoy love, health and happiness
For forever and a day!
Happy birthday, Mrs. Moss, and many, many happy returns!

To wish you the gifts of joy and sublime happiness, dear Ann, is to wish for that which you already have. To be given the amazing privilege of watching you interact with Zenyatta and now her little son, is to witness a co-mingling of souls and a total eclipse of hearts. In the company of our beloved Queen, you glow with an incandescence which would rival the supplicant candles of any cathedral. No Da Vinci madonna could surpass the adoration reflected in your face as you stroked the silkiness of Zenyatta’s new-born foal with such infinite tenderness. She is your alpha and omega, your yin and yang, your sun and stars. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, for sharing the gifts from yours so freely. Thank you for allowing us to embrace Zenyatta so completely throughout her career, forging a bond which will outlast both distance and time. Thank you for allowing us to watch with rapt attention the playful antics of Zenyatta’s all-boy boy, as he sheds the downy softness of babyhood and evolves into the powerful man which he will one day become. Hi y’all; I hope you are doing great and I have not missed too much; though it is impossible to go back to it all.
I had my second training session with caring for the rescue horses at the Cedar Valley Sancturary. They are not Z!!! But, since I have always loved the horse but never had the opportunity to own or care for them I said hey what can’t a 67 yr old not do? ha I think I mentioned they only have three at this time. The first time I began grooming Frito a 28 yr old thoroughbred-quarter horse mix gelding. They had to remind me that you can not keep brushing forever! ha It was a time for me to be one on one with this special horse. Next it was Fancy, an Arabian who is in great shape though she is too older….30. She is a very graceful beautiful horse. She had to be just stunning in her early years. (Black beauty)
Angel is a grey, not sure wht breed, but she is only eight yrs. A women begged that they take her as she was going though a divorce, the horse was not being fed and the husband was abusive it. Now, this girl was extremely playful, nibbles on your tee shirt, tried to get my sunglasses. She actually should be called Nosy Angel. I have had a wonderful time. ha
This last time when I arrived this gal & I thought we would have to walk way out into the pasture and over a ridge to bring them in. Then, Angel and Fancy appeared gracefully running. It was awesome to see. I called them by name and whistled and Angel was the first to arrive, Fancy shortly after. Then, Frito suddenly appeared taking his time, dah dah di dah. They should rename him Slow Poke. ha ha
I am sure many of you that have done all this time after time may say, “yeah been there done that”, but knowing they are receiving love and care is a great feeling in my older age.
I hopefully after this week-end will have time to go back and try to read all of your great posts and interesting info; or at least some. Miss all of you!!

I haven’t been to the blog much lately, what with house and dog sitting for my sister and other minor life disruptions. But this lovely, cool, quiet Sunday AM is a good time to say hello and that I’ve missed reading everyone’s “voices”.
I was so thrilled to learn this morning that Switch won her race yesterday at Hollywood Park. There’s a special place in my heart for her, remembering how valiantly she raced against our beloved Z. Same for St. Trinians. Does anyone know anything about St. Trinians or any news of late about Gio Ponti?
If all goes well, I’ll be at Emerald Downs this PM, standing in line to get Mario Gutierrez’ autograph on a Kentucky Derby picture!! I think he has 5 mounts at ED today, so that will be pretty exciting.

Just wondering if anyone knows where St Trinians has ended up? The last thing I can find on her says she was to be sold at the 2011 Fasig Tipton fall sale. When i looked up the results it has her listed as “OUT”. Does that mean she was sold privately? (Also it has her listed as Male which I thought was weird, but I am sure it was her in the listing)
Anyone know anything?

She was purchased as a broodmare prospect at the Keeneland January sale by Sierra Farm for $80,000, which is a steal.
In the F-T November catalog, she’s listed as a Mare, not a male. M = mare, F = filly, C = colt, G = gelding, H = horse (adult intact male), R = ridgling

AHHHH, TACO,TACO,TACO…with some (say cheese),makes me smile.
TACO!!!!
Thanks Sign.
He will have an O-fish-all name soon. I will still be cheering him on as…TACO.
Thanks to LE and Stonestreet for making this foaling season a very special and enjoyable one. Thanks for putting the fun in it.

Well said Ann. These two (three?) boys are very special.
Stonestreet said the name Chili came along as
Taco and Chili go together. Hot Dixie Chicks colt may
Also fit into the mix???
Can’t wait to here RA sons racing name!!! The one
That really counts.
Max
Sign. Yes, Taco is very cute. Do you think that RA is responsible for his spiky hairdo or could it be Chili’s mom who is the stylist? Your hair gel idea has caught on with these babies.
Ann
Good question Max. Dixie did admire the mane of Curlin, when he was a babe. Chili is sporting the spiked mane,in his babe photos.Dixie loves the spiked mane look for her babes.
Maybe that explains the extra truck deliveries on the farm? Dippitty Do Deliveries.
Yes, Sign has RA contacted you? She wants a night out w/ y’all.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Oh yes Ann, now that Rachel is a single pregnant
Mom, perhaps a trip to BA Tuesday would be in
Order. She has a smaller A than Zenny, but perhaps
Has learned some hair do skills from Hot Dixie
Chick and could do some hair, while she drinks
Her favorite water. Now that her and Zenny are moms
They could talk about mom things. RA could even
Give Zenny some advice about dealing with those
Pesky colts.
Max
Sign and Ann. Z is so nice to all that she would welcome RA. But what about Tasty? You know how territorial that she might be. Guarding Z was her mission. Talking about mom things may also not suit our TT.

Dear Sign, Ann, Max and Z Fans:
Thanks for this link of Taco’s portrait. He is a real cutie.
You guys are cracking me up with the Dippity-Do and spiked manes. Too funny. Hugs, JB

That’s great news, Vicki!

Another filly beats the boys. Dixie Strike, a daughter of Dixie Union, sire of Union Rags, just ran away with the second leg of the Canadian Triple Crown, the Prince of Wales at Fort Erie. She is trained by Mark Casse, who also trained Z’s BBF, Tasty Temptation.
As I recall, Brenda S and Vic were to attend this event and may have something more to tell us about the race.

Whooooo. Hoooo !!!!
What a great race Max, a very talented
Filly!!!!

Just watched it on HRTV.
Looking forward Comments from those

Sign. Forgot to mention another connection to Lane’s End. Her dam sire is Smart Strike.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
WOW, Smart Strike, too.
She is living up to her pedigree.

Dear Max, Sign and Z Fans:
More Girl Power. Here’s the video of Dixie Strike’s win. What a great finish. Made me thing of Z. Hugs, JB

Max
JudyB. Thanks for this. Yes, she closed in this one in very fine style. I also thought of Z. Dixie’s dam sire at Lane’s End must be very proud today of this determined filly. She had a lot of competition from those colts, but she did it.
The winner of the Queen’s Plate did not run in this race because he hates dirt tracks. To win the Canadian Triple Crown, a horse has to race on poly, dirt and turf. The turf race is August 5 at Woodbine.

Dear Max and Vicki B.:
You’re so welcome. Yes, she made it look easy.
Max, I did not know how the Canadian Triple Crown was set up. Very interesting. Do you think Dixie Strike will run the Third Leg on the Turf in August? She won on the turf at Tampa in February and ran third (through a disqualification) at Gulfstream in March. She’s never run on the Woodbine Turn course I don’t think. But I would like to see her go for it; she ran so magnificently in the Prince of Wales. Hugs, JB

OOPs. Sorry, meant “Woodbine Turf” course. Hugs, JB

Judy, thanks for that! From 2nd-last at the half, she just came on, powering past them. Definitely reminded me of Zenny doing that, in fine fashion. And Max, Kudos to Dixie Strike!
Ann
Thanks Max and Judy B.
Will have to cheer on this Dixie darling….Dixie Strike.
What a great horse to win on all three surfaces. Good to know she likes the turf,so maybe she can wrap this Crown up!!! I hope she goes for it.
Very exciting!!!! Girl Power!!!!

Thanks for posting the link of Dixie Strikes win, this past weekend.
Max,
Interesting twist to the Canadian Triple Crown. Emphasis on versatility.
Too bad the US Triple Crown is so boring and no one is breeding for
a champion to take it.

HRTV commentators say,
Bodemeister out of Haskell with a fever
And Hansen maybe in the Haskell now.
He still has to face Payntor, though.
Dr Hansen interview pending.
