Q:
All horses have their quirks and preferences. What does Ziconic like? What bothers him?
Robin Bruen
Morristown, NJ
A: We haven’t come across anything that bothers him. He likes to eat, he likes to be outside, and he really likes people and other horses. He also loves to train!
Q:
What would a typical workout on the track consist of?
Does he get any other exercise at this age, or is it all on the track?
Wendy Hicks
Waterloo, Ontario, Canada
A: He gets to go out in the paddock each morning for 20 to 30 minutes before he trains. During training, he gallops either once or twice around the 5/8 mile track–we’ll alternate day to day until he starts getting older and more fit. After he trains, he goes back out in his paddock. He also gets hand walked.
Q:
I was wondering how Ziconic and Coz are similar and how they are different, in training and personality. Also, is one more like Zenyatta than the other?
Kris O’Connor
Lombard, IL
A: They’re both very intelligent like Zenyatta. Coz was a much more serious baby. He arrived with a very professional attitude; he had a job to do, and he knew what it was. Ziconic is more playful. He’s a little more laid back and easygoing.

Ziconic is so handsome and relaxed and happy at Mayberry, such a treat to see him and hear about how he is doing.Thank-you.
I spent a lttle time this morning looking at past blogs and diaries, such a beautiful visit down memory lane. Our Dear Zenny and her boys and also treasures of Z Prnicess and Zenyatta’s faithful friend Tasty. The blog of July 25,2012 is a wonderful snapshot into the spirit of Coz as a colt, playing with his Mom and buddies and kicking up his hooves-made me smile.
Celeste_in_TX
Thank you so very much for sharing these experts opinions and experiences with Ziconic as he progresses in his training regime in Florida. He is such a beautiful boy and it is so wonderful to learn more about his routine and his approach to his job and to his life. I feel so fortunate that Team Zenyatta continues to share her life and the news of her offspring with those of us who love her from afar. Thank you.

Thank you for the Q&A. I thought Coz was more intense and Zi more laid back. The Great One (Secretariat) was known for his playfulness. I enjoy hearing about the personalities; And Z with her dancing was captivating. Thank you all for sharing.

Dear.Max Yes,Gorgehous Lliege had a little breather before attempting the last fence. That race was certainly not for the faint-hearted!99 lengths!!!These horses are just amazing.Reminded me of the 2001 Grand National when Red Marauder won only 2 completed the course.Gitane is a lovely mare.Hope she will do well at the Festival.Sheena
Max
Read that Gitane jumps to her own standards. She has her own way of doing things. No point in Mullins correcting her if she’s winning. Love that braided mane too as it accentuated her impressive ears.

Hi cappers…
@Sue…i had horendous time getting picks into Tampa Bay site…still not sure they were accepted….tried both tablet and desktop….did you have trouble too?
Sue FLCPRC
Yes I think there system was not ready for all that action. Is that you in first place? I am in position 211 but no strikes yet. I just picked for today’s race. I saw some other names on the list. Who all are playing?
It was a really nice day at the Downs. I won just enough to keep me in wagering funds most of the day. I tried to get a up-close pic of Johnny V but the first time he walked by he was mad. He had just been beat at the wire. The next time he was disqualified and placed second. When he walked by he was with a man talking and was not responding to people. Then the last race he did not finish well. Oh Well maybe next time!

That’s his dad’s family, Montjeu. Hurricane Run by Montjeu won the Arc. St. Nick was also a Montjeu. Offspring of Montjeu are known to be quirky. They do not come quirkier than The Fly. He is a real character. The little foal looks like she is off to a good start.

Thanks for sharing this wonderful video of The Fly’s daddy, Montjeu. What a great stretch run. Love and Hugs, JB

The Fly like his father will always attack to get the win. Montjeu would never back off a battle with a competitor. His trainer said that if Montjeu had been a human he would have been an eccentric genius. He passed that intelligence to The Fly. Just stay far away from his teeth.

Thanks, Max. He made it look like a cake walk. Beautiful.

Dear Max.Thanks for those great memories of Montjeu at Ascot. It makes me feel sad he is no longer with us.He lives on in his offspring.
Splash of Ginge was fine,Nigel says it’s left-handed courses for him in future. His owner had taken an early flight from Spain(seems he told his wife he was going out for a pint of milk!)Long way to go shopping.Gorgehous Lliege was examined after his race and although tired was in “perfect health”There was an inquiry after the race.Sheena.
Max
Heard about that BHA inquiry. Very sensible ruling too by the beak. Love it that GL was only tired and had a little rest before trying the last jump again. Doesn’t matter that he was second by 99 lengths. GL was in the money. Very happy to hear that he is in good shape.
The Fly is a lot like his father. Montjeu won the King George on a hand ride. Kinane did not have to move on him. Montjeu knew exactly what to do, a genius of a horse.

Dear Z friends,
I am happy to announce that dear ol’ Huey now has a little sister. I adopted her from a neighboring county shelter and brought her home yesterday. Her name is Bailey and she must have been someone’s dog since she knows “sit”, what a crate is for and is napping in it now, and seems to be house trained. She is very friendly and lovable. She and Huey are doing very well — so far only a very few snarls from Huey; he is just keeping her in her place. Huey is the senior dog after all. They estimate that she is a little more than 2years old and is a Lab/Hound mix. She is very long and lean with long legs — a figure that I envy! LOL
I know Reilly is watching and is happy. See you someday, sweet boy.
Unfortunately, there was another wonderful dog at the shelter which I would love to adopt as well, but I think two new young dogs might be too much for sweet ol’ Huey. If any of you in the Pittsboro, NC/Chatham county area are interested, this nice guy’s shelter name is “Hobo”, and he seems very calm and nice. Give the Chatham County Animal Shelter a call! I really want him to be placed and would gladly cover half of his adoption fee!
Sorry to have run on so long! Enjoy the remainder of the weekend.
Hugs and Love
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)

Dear Judy B.,
Thanks so much! Bailey is a very sweet girl. She and Huey have done very well together this weekend. Hope she doesn’t mind being crated tomorrow — she must wear that awful e-collar (aka the cone or lampshade) when alone so she doesn’t bother her incision. Will come home a couple of times to let her out so she can get some “out” time. Wish us luck!
Take care and stay safe in the upcoming storm. Keep warm!
Hugs and Love

Marshall, Congratulations on your new ‘baby’, Bailey. Huey will probably end up being her fierce protector. Lovely time to get a puppy – when it’s cold outside and they can romp around the house. Many blessings to you and your ‘babies’. with love, Elizabeth
Marshall (NC Broad)
Dear Elizabeth,
Thank you for your good wishes! Huey and Bailey seem to be getting along well and sorting things out. Huey is keeping her in line, and she is very sweet tempered. She also seems to be house-trained so there was someone in her life before — it’s a mystery how anyone could just leave her or lose her without looking for her at the pound/shelter. I am extremely happy to have her, though – their negligence is our big gain!
Have a good week!
Love and Hugs
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Thanks to the Mayberry folks for an informative post and to Kyle for the great picture of our red guy. Like many others, I am surprised about Coz being the “serious” one. Seems like John has indicated that he’s a bit of a handful :-). At any rate, they are both spectacular boys, and we are so very fortunate to be able to follow their development. Thanks as always to Team Z for keeping us in the loop.
On another note, congrats to Take Charge Brandi for hanging on for another win today at Oaklawn. Think that’s four in a row now! Wish you could have gone Carol.

@CarolinArkansas Your bets not only got in, yours is the first name listed on the leaderboard. Woo Hoo I had chosen both winners, but the first one was disqualified.
@Marshall So happy for you and Bailey, Huey, too. Bailey sounds like a real cutie, Lab and Hound. What color is she and does she have droopy hound ears?
I just can’t get interested in the Super Bowl….think I’ll watch horse races on calracing.com tomorrow.

Hi Marty…i had the DQ horse too….second race i had the second place one at big odds…but the money from the DQ has been removed from my total…

Carol, I also made choices in both races. I’d better go back and check my totals. I also have made a choice in each race for tomorrow. Not confident about either, but no help from the contest that I can find as far as past performances.

Dear Z’sters,
I am old enough to remember Rod McKuen. I used to own an album or two of his music/poetry. Ah yes, the sixties and seventies! I saw in today’s newspaper that Rod passed away Thursday at 81. He may not have garnered critical acclaim, but he certainly was popular, at least in my college years. He received an Academy Award nomination for the music and lyrics of “Jean” from “The Pride of Miss Jean Brodie” (starring Maggie Smith).
Thanks, RM, for the youthful memories. RIP
Celeste_in_TX
Congratulations on your new pup and thanks for sharing the news about Rod McKuen. My husband and I saw him perform his music/poetry at Red Rocks, CO way back in the early 70’s. I might still have a book of poems somewhere around here in my clutter. Have fun with Bailey!
Marshall (NC Broad)
Celeste,
Thanks for the doggie congratulations! I think Huey and I got lucky, and Bailey did, too!

Marshall
Yeah, I remember him and the song and movie. I guess I am really showing my age, but I think the music of the 60s and 70s was far better than anything out today.
Congrats on your new dog. I know Reilly is looking down and blessing all of you.
Marshall (NC Broad)
Dear Shirlee,
Thanks for the congrats! Yes, I know Reilly approves — he would love playing with her, as she is very sweet tempered. All is happy at the Perry household again!
Yes, I do agree with you about the music — I would add the 50’s to that, too, even though I was too young to be listening to radio then (too busy playing outside!). I love the music of my parents era, also. After the mid 70’s, I pretty much switched to country music. The 80’s, 90’s and anything newer leave me cold.
Hope you stay safe and warm in Indy!
Hugs
Sarah
Thanks for the insight into Zen’s boys. I love to hear how Ziconic loves people. Of course that stood out about Zen so much so maybe some of that part of her temperament got passed on to him as well.
Jacalyn Thomas
I live in Oxford, NC about an hour north. I will talk to my husband and give them a call. Any more information you can give me?
Marshall (NC Broad)
Dear Jacalyn,
“Hobo” is a mixed breed, maybe some Lab with boxer or bull terrier? He is brindle color — tan with black stippling and about 50 lbs. They estimate his age at about 2 years old. As I said he seems to be very sweet and calm in the somewhat chaotic atmosphere of the shelter. I do hope he finds a forever home. I will continue to check on him, however.
Thanks for your interest! The number for the Chatham shelter is: 919-542-7203. You can go to their website to view the dogs there (chathamcountyanimalshelter).

Great news, Marshall.
Welcome, Miss Bailey! Lucky pup.
Love and hugs.
Marshall (NC Broad)
Thanks, Ann!
Bailey is a good girl. She and Huey are doing well together. The first time Huey saw her (I took him down to the shelter so they could meet before I adopted her), I think he saw this black dog which from a distance looked like Reilly — Huey’s tail started wagging faster and he whined a bit. They met and sniffed each other, and then resumed checking out the smells on the ground. Good vibes!
Hope you have a good week! Egad! It’s 3 AM!! To bed, immediately!
