Q:
When a mare has a foal, and then is sent to another farm to be bred for the next season, is the foal left back at the farm until the mare returns or does the foal accompany mom in the horse van to the stallions farm ? Is someone assigned to the foal to keep it calm while mom is being bred?
Sally Wade
Saginaw, MI
A:Typically, as long as the stallion is local, the foal will be left at home while the mare is bred. They usually return within a one to two hour period, and someone in the barn will watch them closely while the mare is absent. In our breeding shed we will make concessions for mares that are travelling some distance to be bred and allow them to bring the foal with the mare.
Q:
Zenyatta has always been a big girl and has packed on quite a few since retirement—do you have a way of providing structured exercise to those horses that need it?
Karen in Indiana
Indianapolis, IN
A:In Zenyatta’s case she came to us in peak physical fitness off the track in the dead of winter. Due to the dramatic climate change for her we had to let her down slowly and carefully. Obviously she needs the extra condition for farm life as she has the elements to contend with now. She gained weight gradually and she is a mare than can hold a lot of condition due to her size and depth of girth.
Typically we do not have issues with broodmares becoming too overweight—in fact when they have a foal at their side they need a lot of calories to maintain the foal and their own condition. We feed the mares grain at least twice a day and sometimes three for those who warrant more. The mares are turned out as much as possible when the weather permits, as free exercise is the best way to keep them in shape and healthy both mentally and physically.
We do sometimes have weight control issues with the stallions. We have a horse walker in place at the stallion barn to keep some of the bigger guys from getting too heavy, especially before the breeding season when they need to be fit and ready to go!

Here are today’s redneck jokes. You might be a redneck if the first thing you do in the morning is check your critter traps. You might be a redneck if your parents met at a family reunion. It is a sign that you are attending a redneck church if the favorite wine for communion is Boone’s Farm. You might be a redneck if stealing road signs is a family outing. You might be a redneck if your lawn mower can break the sound barrier. You might be a redneck if the air freshener hanging in your car lost its scent more than five years ago. You might be a redneck if you have to decide whether to sign your name with a large of small x.

That should be large or small x.

Just wondering about you Z sters and I’m rewarding me for finishing my letter of concern to the BLM. Will I still be allowed in the RN club if I don’t quite qualify by these standards? Is it a mitigating circumstance if I’m AL Chapter’s president. Can you tell I’ve written one to many letters to the BLM :)

Doris-You are, and always will be, president of the Alabama chapter of the Redneck Club. No matter what activities you choice to engage in, you are one of us. Always good to hear from you. There are many standards for qualification as a redneck and you have exhibited these in the past. Once a redneck, always a redneck. I have heard that the Florida panhandle is referred to as the redneck Riviera. Sue, our chapter president from Florida, suggests that I ask a citizen of Alabama what it is like as she has never been there. Doris-have you ever been to the redneck Riviera?

I had a fabulous night last night. Two of our Dumplings, Shari Voltz and Dawn Conrad, are in town, along with Dawn’s mother, so I met them at the bed and breakfast where they’re staying and we had a nice dinner. They are so nice! I just love them. I told Dawn that a lot of people on the blog are concerned about her because she hasn’t posted in a while. She said that she has just been really busy and that everything is fine. Dawn and Shari told me all about their trip so far. They’ve been going to about 4 horse farms a day and having a fabulous time. They wanted me to extend their well wishes to everyone on the blog. :-)

Terry Crow, I’ve been meaning to ask you if you got your skunk hat yet? We had a good day. We did some routines, and I was doing something wrong up to the first diagonal because he would shy to the right everyone we got near it. Once Infigured out what I was doing wrong, we got going pretty well, and we did the routines in sync and I even got the number of strides in between the jumps right today! I have only been counting them for a few lessons, but I got them today! It really was too hot to do anymore, so we just took the jumps low today. I gave him his apple, and the pieces took their customary place on the floor not long after! I hosed him down, and he got turned out with his best friend Lupi. Gus quickly ran over to the fence to talk to the ladies on the other side. He may be an older gentleman, but he is a favorite with the ladies!

JAG.. I responded to the Colorado Fire’s pic’s you posted on FB. What I don’t get, ok, some people waited until the last minute to evacuate but, couldn’t they have opened the gates so the horses and livestock could run for safety on their own? I mean, that would be first priority, my animals! If I didn’t have a trailer or the means to physically get them out, I would turn them loose and hope for the best and come back after it’s all said and done, to go claim them. At least we, as Human’s have a voice, they don’t and to keep them in their pins and not to at least give them a fighting chance by letting them loose? This is just too sad!!!
For those living in the area, god be with you!
And, I thought the fires in Texas were bad last year! I’m going to try and start a new forum, called the Colorado Fires. Let’s see what happens. God Bless!
HeidiK (Vallejo,Ca)
Ok, since I’m a bit fired up…. I’m going to drop the ball on one of our own Dumplings! Awhile back, Markinsac, started a triple crown contest and the winner would get a Zenny bobble head. Well, for whatever reason, after the Derby, people were complaining and got him upset, so he stopped the competion and I was declared the winner. Since, I had won the first leg in the competion.
He said, it would be in the mail that week. Well, that never happened. So, I sent him another message asking what the issue was?! He said: “It’s at my Father’s in So.Ca and he’d be there to visit and pick it up in a few days, then, he’d ship it. Again, waited and waited!
I sent him anothe rmessage stating: ” If you don’t have it or, you don’t want to part with it I understand but, you made this promise!”
He said, he was taking it to the P.O and to enjoy it.
Well, I still haven’t gotten it.
HeidiK (Vallejo,Ca)
This was the last message I sent to him..
“Mark, I’m not sure what the deal is? At this point, it seems like you’re playing a game with me and if that’s so, I will mention this on the main blog because, it’s not right! I never thought that I’d get stiffed by a fellow Dumpling”
There you go. Man, was I stiffed and I was so looking forward to having a Zenny bobblehead in my truck or on display in my house. Such a dissapointment! :(
Markinsac, I warned you!
Pati- Prince Z Future TC Winner
Maybe it got lost in the mail? Sometimes stuff like that happens, and markinsac hasn’t been in the forum in a while. The best chance you would have of recovering it is by calling the mail carrier that he sent it through, and ask about it. Other than that, it either hasn’t been sent yet, or it’s gone. Hope you find it!
HeidiK (Vallejo,Ca)
Well, if I had the info from him, I could do that but, I don’t. I only did this because, I was upset that a fellow Dumpling would do this! It’s not that HUGE of a deal. I just had to voice my dissapointment. I don’t know, maybe I’m old school but, when you make a promise, you follow up on it instead of leading people on and playing games.
Plus, it’s not like, I didn’t have contact with him the last few months and I gave him ample opportunities to do the right thing. Well, that is done and over with and I won’t get the bobblehead that I Won!
Another thing, I would have joined in the contest whether there was a prize on the line or not. I would have played just for bragging rights.
Pati- Prince Z Future TC Winner
Oh. Oh no I agree that once a promise is made, you are to keep it. Either way, you still have the bragging rights. :-)
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Very sad, Heidi.
If I had an extra bobblehead I would send to you.
Some people have no ethics!!!

News of the Forum’s return has boosted long-shelved plans by another developer for a $2-billion real estate project that would replace the nearby Hollywood Park racetrack with a large planned community, Butts said.
Work on that project, called Hollywood Park Tomorrow, will begin early next year, he said. The community is to include 3,000 residential units, stores, theaters, restaurants, a hotel and a casino

Does this really mean bye-bye Hollywood Park???
Rosemary McCauley - Pres/AZ/New Mexico RNC
I read the article, and it sounds like indeed they are planning to level Hollywood Park and replace it with condos and/or retail space. I haven’t kept up with this story so I don’t know a lot of details, but I thought Betfair bought Hollywood Park so that it would not be torn down. Next year seems very soon to start a project of this sort considering all factors.
Terry Crow GP
Betfair did not buy Hollywood Park. Betfair merely paid a licensing fee in order to add its name to the venue. It has nothing to do with the ownership, which is held by Bay Meadows Company.
Pati- Prince Z Future TC Winner
If they squash Hollywood Park, so many people are going to lose their jobs. Condos and apartments that only the wealthy will be able to afford. Not only that, they will be destroying a historic venue that saw some of the greatest horses of all time grace it’s hallowed halls. Most importantly they will be destroying the home of Zenyatta. Inglewood politicians need to stop setting their sights in destroying HP. It’s a cornerstone reason to why Inglewood hasn’t crashed yet. I saw the neighborhood around HP and I honestly don’t think that people will buy any kind of home when surrounded by such a poor region; unless they make it a gated community with roud the clock security. Of course not all the neighborhoods around HP are poor but where else are all the unemployed people going to find work if Hollywood goes under? This is a bad idea that will only be realized once the idea fails. Then the politicians will do what they do best- blame someone else and never actually do anything about it. It will be up to a rich TB racing owner to save HP, and not politicians.
Pati- Prince Z Future TC Winner
Plus, how many people are going to spend big money on a condo or an apartment only to constantly hear planes flying overhead? LAX is very close to HP, and it is in no way an ideal place to put living quarters of any kind.
Karen Gogue / my heart :)’s ♥
Just rumours as of now, Betfair is still remodeling parts of HollyPark. So why do that if HP is going to be torn down?
Pati- Prince Z Future TC Winner
I don’t know how politicians think either. I wouldn’t understand that either but politicians are a different breed of thinkers, or lack there-of. Time will tell.
Ann
They think while scratching someone elses back.
Karen Gogue / my heart :)’s ♥
I agree Pati – try telling that to the powers that be! They don’t think, and live, the way most peeps do!
Terry Crow GP
Personally, I do not think that such a development will happen. Hollywood Park is in a depressed area.

A Birthday Poem for Katherine Wheeler
(June 29, 2012)
Today’s the day
We celebrate
Our dear Counselor Kate,
Who’s in so MANY ways
Nothing less than first rate!
Let me here first relate
How she does advocate
For animals, be they big or small,
But most of all,
For the noble horse
And also of course
For his country cousin, the burro.
Kate is most thorough
In her letters and phone calls
Of advocacy.
In them we can see
How she
Does fashion,
With great passion
And intellect,
A message both erudite
And direct.
She wields her words
To great effect
To protect
America’s wild herds
And the cultivated Thoroughbred
Alike
As they face the plight
Of losing their life
To vicious slashes of a knife
Should they to slaughter be sent.
Katherine, a core founder of our Equi-Army,
Has us forward led
In the fight
To bring such travesties to light
And in us does ignite
A diligence to set things right–
In this cause she never will relent.
Then too, as Kate does say,
Along the way
She found a Thoroughbred filly,
Aged just three,
Who was in desperate straits
At the New Holland sale,
A place foretelling woe and travail,
A hundred-some miles west of Philly.
This fine young equine lady
Has Mr. Prospector in her pedigree,
Secretariat and Northern Dancer you’ll also there see.
Now fortunately
She’s been saved by Kate
From an unspeakable fate.
Blues House she is named—
With that moniker it seems
As if ’twas preordained
That she should be
In the vicinity
Of New Orleans!
And now Bluesy
Is indeed on her way
To Baton Rouge
In Cajun country,
There to stay
As Kate’s beloved adoptee–
We do the two congratulate!
Dearest Kate,
I would love to further elaborate
Your many sterling qualities,
But when I begin them all to contemplate,
I know they’re far too many here to enumerate,
So please
Let it suffice this to state:
You are our dear “Katherine the Great”!

Weather news this morning is very disturbing, terrible storms in Indiana and other states, so I hope that all are safe.
I am hoping for life to settle down a bit now that Vic has graduated. The ceremonies were great and Vic did very well, she received five awards, including the Student Success Award, so I was very proud. Now we can look forward to college in September.
Terry GP – I am certainly not holding my breath waiting for Mr. Stronach to gallop in on his white horse and rescue Ontario from the clutches of premier, Dalton McGuinty. Mr. S might need to give some thought to how well his Adena Springs North breeding operation will fare when the TB industry is gone, maybe it will have to close down as well, and I doubt that there will be line up waiting to buy the property. The local Member of the Provincial Parliament was a no show at the graduation ceremonies on Thursday evening, perhaps a good thing – I don’t think he would have received a warm welcome.

Shoemaker Mile feels like home turf for Mr. Commons
The John Shirreffs-trained Mr. Commons always seems to run well when the race is contested on a grass course, as Saturday’s Hollywood Park feature will be. Another contender to watch: Little Mike.
A fees-paid automatic berth to the Breeders’ Cup Mile will be up for grabs Saturday in the Grade I $300,000 Shoemaker Mile at Betfair Hollywood Park, and one person feeling confident about the race is trainer John Shirreffs.
The Shirreffs-trained Mr. Commons, a 4-year-old son of Artie Schiller, is known for his consistency on the turf. He covers a mile in 1 minute 34 seconds or better seemingly every time.
“He always runs so well,” Shirreffs said.
Even though Mr. Commons has finished second in his last two races, the Grade 2 American Handicap and the Grade I Frank Kilroe Mile, Shirreffs was pleased with the horse’s effort.
The question is, can Mr. Commons get into the winner’s circle Saturday against Little Mike, who has been brought in from Kentucky after winning the Grade I Woodford Reserve Turf Classic at Churchill Downs on the Kentucky Derby card?

Hansen towers over 2012 Iowa Derby
The Sports Network Published Friday, Jun. 29, 2012
The morning line odds for the 14th Iowa Derby at Prairie Meadows indicate that it should be a one horse race. Eclipse Award winner Hansen has been rated the 2-5 early favorite versus four lesser rivals in Saturday’s $250,000 event for three-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles.
Trained by Mike Maker, Hansen is beginning the second half of his 2012 season following a disappointing ninth-place finish in the Kentucky Derby eight weeks ago. The 2011 champion two-year-old was well placed early during the Run for the Roses and then ran into some traffic problems.
“We didn’t have the best horse. Ramon (Dominguez) had him in a great spot and he had every chance if we were good enough. We weren’t good enough,” Maker noted. “Turning for home it looked like we were in a good spot but couldn’t make up any ground at the eighth pole.”
Owned by Dr. Kendall Hansen and Skychai Racing, Hansen has won four of his seven career starts for $1,623,305. .
From the rail out here is the field for the Iowa Derby: Hansen, Ramon Dominguez, 2-5; Alsvid, Chris Landeros, 4-1; Hero of Order, Ken Tohill, 8-1; Macho Bull, Jake Barton, 15-1 and Truetap, Julien Leparoux, 8-1.
Post-time for the Iowa Derby will be approximately 10:40 p.m. (ET).

GP I need to find out why none of my fellow Floridians have joined the club. I know we have several Zenny bloggers form the sunshine state. I can’t be the only Redneck in the state. ??
Terry I was helping my sister today clean her condo at Redington Beach and came up with this one for you.
You might be a Redneck if your Beach Condo is a roof tarp held up with 4 fishing rods under the pier.
I would like to see Mr. Commons and my White Flash Hansen in the winner’s circle today.
