Q:
Sales have always fascinated me but I don’t have a full understanding of all the mechanics of them. How is it chosen which yearlings will be sent to auction and what sales they will be sent to?
Brooke Coleman
Versailles, KY
A: Determining if a yearling will go to public auction depends on a number of factors, beginning with the initial interests of the breeder. Some clients breed to race, some breed specifically to sell, and some do a little bit of both.
Sale nominations are submitted to the auction companies by May 1st of their yearling year; this is when it is determined who will be kept to race and who will be pointed towards a sale. This decision is generally made by the owner in conjunction with the advice given by our managerial and sales staff here at Lane’s End.
Various sales are held throughout the summer and fall; some are “select”, meaning nominated yearlings must be accepted by the sale companies upon inspection, and other sales are open, or acceptable for all types of yearlings. Determining which sale to nominate a yearling to prior to the May 1st deadline depends on a few important factors:
1) Physical
Yearlings are very similar to teenagers—they can go through awkward stages as they grow and develop, so it is important to select a sale that corresponds well with a horse’s maturity level. Our public sales and managerial staff inspect yearlings every two-three weeks through the Spring months. Notations are made on the horse’s conformation, condition, stride, and even demeanor. Maintaining notes on their physical development allows us to judge how each horse matures and determine the most appropriate sale for them.
2) Vetting
When all yearlings at Lane’s End are between 10-11 months of age, a set of survey x-rays (36 views) is taken to help us determine if any joints need special attention or surgery based on radiographic findings. For sale yearlings, survey x-rays also allow us to establish a suitable exercise program for each yearling entering the sale prep routine on June 1st.
We are mindful of survey x-rays at sale nomination time because radiographic findings can affect how commercial a yearling will be at a sale. Another set of x-rays are taken within 21 days of the auction date and provided for veterinarians to review on behalf of potential buyers.
3) Pedigree
The strength of a yearling’s pedigree also affects which sale we nominate it to. For example, a horse by a proven sire out of a stakes winner/producer will appeal to buyers at select sale venues. Alternatively, a horse with an unproven family will probably be best-suited for a larger, open sale venue where there are more potential buyers present, some of whom may not have steep pedigree requirements.
Lane’s End typically consigns yearlings at the following sales:
July 15: Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Select Yearling Sale
A one-day select sale best suited for a physically forward yearling with few (if any) significant radiographic findings. Because it is a select sale, all yearlings must be accepted in a conformation inspection performed by the sale company. Physicals and X-Rays are very important here as this is the first summer yearling sale and buyers are not pressed to purchase a horse that doesn’t meet their exact requirements. Minimum bid required: $10,000
2012 # Catalogued: 283
Average sale price: $81,291
Median sale price: $60,000
August 5-6: Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select Yearling Sale
A select sale taking place over two evening sessions, held in conjunction with the prestigious race meet in Saratoga Springs, NY. Physical, pedigree, and vetting are all extremely important at this sale as it is concentrated with some of the best yearlings to be found all year. Minimum bid required: $10,000
2012 # Catalogued: 162
Average sale price: $299,065
Median sale price: $225,000
August 10-11: Fasig-Tipton Saratoga New York – Bred Yearlings
A two-day sale for New York-Bred yearlings only. Athletic-looking individuals sell well here as the sale is well-attended by trainers and end-users looking to race in the lucrative state-bred program. Minimum bid required: $5,000
2012 # Catalogued: 223
Average sale price: $62,551
Median sale price: $50,000
September 9-20: Keeneland September Yearling Sale
This is the largest yearling sale in the world and it is suitable for yearlings of all types… a one-stop shop for buyers! 11-12 sale sessions are typically catalogued within 6 sale books. Horses catalog primarily by pedigree with the best pedigree + physical combinations selling in Books 1-2. Keeneland September attract thousands of international and domestic owners, trainers, and bloodstock agents. Minimum bid required: $1,000
2012 # Catalogued: 3,604
Average sale price: $87,354
Median sale price: $45,000
October 21-23: Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Yearling Sale
A three-day sale acceptable for all yearling types, especially late bloomers! This sale is also a good option for yearlings that may have been injured or experienced a physical setback over the summer months. Minimum bid required: $1,000
# Catalogued: 1,254
Average sale price: $26,127
Median sale price: $12,750

Dear Sign: Really need the prayer today – forecast in Canberra and surrounding areas is for the worst fire danger in 10 or more years: Sydney is going to have 43 degrees, and here in Canberra it’s going to 38. But it’s the fire situation that will be made so much worse by strong winds. So please, Lord, be with us all and bring a cool change , but safety to people and livestock.

Ice Box’s First Foal Arrives in Florida
Updated: Sunday, January 6, 2013 8:39 PM
Posted: Sunday, January 6, 2013 2:49 PM
Ice Box , 2010 Florida Derby (gr. I) winner and Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) runner-up, was represented by his first foal on Jan. 5.
The chestnut filly, born at Buena Vista Farm in Ocala, Fla., is out of the Bluegrass Cat mare Vision in Blue. Vision in Blue was a winner of four races from 21 starts and placed third in the OBS Championship Stakes as a 3-year-old. She sold for $215,000 at the Keeneland November breeding stock sale in 2007 and was offered in the same sale two years later, but did not meet her reserve.
“She’s a nice, strong filly with good size and good bone,” said Chris Baccari, co-owner of Ice Box. “It’s exactly what we were hoping to see in the progeny of Ice Box, so it’s a great start to his career at stud.”
Ice Box, who earned $948,068 in a career that spanned from ages 2 to 4, is a son of the late notable sire of sires, Pulpit .
Ice Box retired to stud at Calumet Farm and covered his first book of mares in 2012. Upon the sale of Calumet Farm to the Calumet Investment Group Trust, Ice Box was relocated to Three Chimneys Farm later that year and will stand his first season at the Midway, Ky.-based operation in 2013. Calumet Farm has been leased to Thoroughbred owner/breeder Brad Kelley.

BLOODHORSE: ANIMAL KINGDOM GEARING UP FOR 2013 CAMPAIGN – to include
Dubai and Royal Ascot.
“The Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap will be a prep for the $10 million Dubai World Cup (UAE-I) March 31, a race Animal Kingdom missed last year due to injury. Plans call for the colt to then be flown from Dubai to England to be considered for an additional start, possibly at Royal Ascot in June.
Majority interest in the breeding rights of Animal Kingdom, the champion 3-year-old of 2011, were recently acquired by John Messara’s Australia-based Arrowfield Stud. The Team Valor homebred out of the Acatenango mare Dalicia will begin his stud career in Australia next September and will likely shuttle to the Northern Hemisphere beginning in 2014. He will be the first Kentucky Derby winner to start his stud career in Australia. The 20 Team Valor International partners who own shares will maintain a significant interest. ”

Hope everything is going well so far this year for all who post on the blog. I am still formulating my talking animals jokes, but in the meantime here are some rednecks. You might be a redneck if you can’t schedule a family reunion until after the parole board meets. You might be a redneck if you hold a frog and it worries about getting warts. You might be a redneck if you have a bumper sticker on your bowling ball. You might be a redneck if you spray paint your dead shubbery green. You might be a redneck if you have removed your bathroom door so you can watch TV from the commode.

I’ve never spray-painted dead shrubbery green but we used to have a salesman work for us that lived in Dallas and one year when it snowed there, he spray-painted the snow green. Does that count?

Question & Answer Session on Twitter Monday Jan. 7 2013
Racing Post & Charlie Longsdon (Oxfordshire based racehorse trainer )
A huge thank you to the brilliant CharlieLongsdon for giving up his time to answer your questions. We hope you enjoyed the session
Q What inspired you to become a racehorse trainer? How should younger people approach this challenging career?
A Always been involved in horses & played too much rugby to be a jockey! After 8 years of being an assistant was time to enter big wide world
It is difficult for young people starting in training as no proof of ability to train winners but luckily few people have shown great faith
Q No doubt all roads lead to cheltenham very soon, any horses mapped out for it and expected to produce a brave show?
A Pendra hopefully will go for novices or maybe a handicap depending on what mark he is given. Will be a select few but we’re hopeful
Q charlie what happened to reblis yesterday was going well then suddenly stopped
A Needs a small field so he can dictate from the front. They went a stride too quick for him yesterday so will look for less competitive race
Q Do you still think Vulcanite is a Cheltenham Festival candidate despite his defeat yesterday?
A Yes I do. He wants better ground and a step-up to 2m4f would be ideal. If he had winged the 2nd last he would have gone very close LTO
Q where next for Hazy Tom? And give us one horse from the stable we haven’t seen yet
A Was going to run this weekend but had a small set-back. Might end up at Cheltenham with step-up to 2m4f will run in handicap at end of month
Q Do you use anything to help you to tell when your horses are at peak fitness? Do you weigh them, use bloodtests or?
A We weigh them every week which is a good indication and we do take blood samples, but not religiously
Q Which race do you dream of winning the most?
A Gold Cup as it means you have the best horse in country but very closely followed by the Grand National. Not fussy in which order though!
Q Evening Charlie, how far can Pete the Feat go in his career? Saw him @FolkestoneRaces and has a bright future
A Might run at Warwick on Saturday. Will make decision on Thursday. The way he won last time would think there might be a bit more improvement Will be interesting to see if there is. Everything he achieves from now will be a bonus
Q What do you think of the new-look Channel 4 racing. Early days but anyone you’d have kept on?
A I’ve been racing everyday it’s been on but they seem a really professional crew. Everyone will warm to it eventually & easy to criticise
Q Hey Charlie. In an ideal world, which novice chaser would you currently like to be training?
A Simonsig is the obvious one and he looks a very scary prospect for next year against the big boys. Cheltenham will be his big test…but nothing in this country is good enough to beat him
Q do you often get told u talk too fast?
A Yes all the time and that no one can understand me!
Q Is Frisco Depot going to be aimed at 3m handicap on opening day of the Festival? How is he?
A He has had a wind operation since the Hennessy & today was his first day back. Will be about 6 weeks before we make any plans for him
Q Will Loose Chips be running in the Lanzarote on Saturday?
A Only if the ground is very soft. If it is, he has a great each-way squeak
Q how much a month on average does a jumps horse cost to train ?
A About £1,500
Q Charlie, What’s your favourite course and why?
A Love Sandown park. My horses always seem to run well there and they really look after you. Also like BangorOnDeeRace and MarketRasenRace
Q last furlong in gold cup and your in a 2 way scrap. Whuch jockey would you most want on your horse.
A Noel Fehily, Richard Johnson and of course AP are three, but there is a very deep pool of talent out there
Q when should we see grandads horse out again?
A Just come back into work last week so should be back at the beginning of April and will hopefully go well fresh
Q what is your most promising juvenile?
A Tidal Way runs at Ludlow on Wednesday off a nice mark of 120. Has won 2/3 and form looks strong
Q good evening charlie in your opinion who is the most under rated trainer and why?
A Jeremy Scott is pretty under rated as is Anthony Honeyball. They have great strike-rates and are excellent trainers
Q Do you not think Spirit Of Shankly needs stepping up in distance ? Breeding suggests potential stayer
A He will step up to 2m4f at some stage once there is better ground
Q Has there ever been a time when the winners have dried up and regretted your decision to follow this profession?
A Always stressful times but the last year has been great. Of course if you go a couple of weeks without a winner it’s always testing!
It’s massive. Takes a lot of stress out of the whole experience. The debrief after the race can be just as important as the race itself…
Having a jockey like Noel makes planning future targets so much easier
That’s my hour up. Thank you so much for all your questions and sorry I couldn’t answer them all. Enjoy your racing, Charlie

Classic-winning trainer Jeremy Hindley dies
OBITUARY By George Ennor 6:28PM 7 JAN 2013 Racing Post
JEREMY HINDLEY, who trained around 700 winners in a 17-year career which ended in 1987, has died at the age of 69.
He had been suffering from motor neurone disease since 2001 and passed away at his home in Hermanus, South Africa.
The best horses he trained included Protection Racket, who won the Irish St Leger and the Ebor, The Go-Between, whose eight wins from 11 juvenile starts included the Cornwallis Stakes, the Doncaster Cup winner Crash Course, and Huntingdale, who took the Dewhurst.
His first involvement with racing and breeding came via his family’s Ribblesdale Stud, which had been founded as Gisburn on the Yorkshire/Lancashire borders by his father Reg in 1949. Later the stud was moved to and amalgamated with the Cartoft Stud at Kirkbymoorside.

Shackleford Connections Buying Mares at Sale
By Ron Mitchell, The Blood-Horsel Updated: Monday, January 7, 2013 1:26 PM
Mike Lauffer, who bred and raced Shackleford in partnership with Bill Cubbedge, said the partners have a shopping list for the Keeneland January Horses of All Ages sale, looking for mares to mate to the Eclipse Award finalist who has been retired to John Phillips’ Darby Dan Farm.
Among the early purchases by Lauffer, who plans to breed 10 mares to Shackleford, was Haylie Brae, a daughter of Bernardini bought for $115,000.
Consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, the 5-year-old mare was produced from the unraced Danzig mare Dance Swiftly.
She is a half-sister to two stakes winners and descends from a strong female family that includes grade I winner and leading sire Smart Strike, Canadian champions Classy ‘n Smart (Canadian Broodmare of the Year), Dance Smartly, Regal Classic, Sky Classic, and Grey Classic.
“She’s beautiful,” Lauffer said of the acquisition. “She had some talent and could run. But she flipped in the paddock and was injured and was never the same when she returned to the track.
“I love Bernardini as a sire and I think the A.P. Indy line will match up well with Shackleford (a son of Forestry).”

I did enjoy the racing this weekend some really great moments.
Some really sad ones to RIP to those poor beauties.
I wasn’t going to say this but I am just a bit disappointed that I did not get one

Dear Z-Dumpling Sue,
Happy Birthday To You!
As a “cat herder” profession-al,
I can tell you’re a special gal.
And there is nothing better for the heart
Than furbabies with whiskers who dart
Right into your lap – regardless
Of hot flashes or mood swings or house mess –
To tell you they need you
And not to be blue.
When it comes to “friends”
The furry ones are more true!
I wish I lived closer to you – I have several purrfect kitty rescues who would love to be your new best friends! But – the right kitty will FIND YOU, not the other way around. A walk through any local no-kill shelter or humane society facility will prove this. The right one – or ones (I always like to have buddies) – will almost YELL at you to pick them.
Hang in there! There are so many of us here who have blazed this trail for you and we are there for you if you need us.

A. Zayat tweets on JAYCITO
Jaycito update: I want to thank JulienLeparoux for wrapping up and protecting Jaycito according to Bob Baffert and Mike Mitchell.
Jaycito hates SA dirt his instruction was if you don’t think he is getting a handle of the track just protect the colt. #classyjock
Jaycito preffered surface is Synthetic and possibly Turf.
After discussions with Bob Baffert and his former trainer. Justin and I decided to help a new and upcoming trainer simon callaghan to give him Jaycito as a challenge to get him back and show his old form as a Grade 1 winner at 2.
I would like to Thank Bob Baffert and Mike Mitchell for taking very good care of our horse.
Good Luck simon callaghan looking forward for fun and safe racing in the future.

Oh, Sue, I’m so sorry your day is not going well! I’ve just been sitting here working on your poem, and now it’s ready–a little late in the day (I’m sorry!), but I hope better late than never.
A Birthday Poem for Sue in FL
(January 7, 2013)
Our dearest Sue,
Known as Jellybean on the Forum,
As we bid the old year adieu
And usher in the new,
May you today leave behind decorum
And indulge
In whatever you’d most love to do
Your spirits again to renew.
Remember 2012 brought us the joy
Of Zenny’s first, her precious boy,
’Twas early in March that she bore him–
And forever we’ll all adore him!
Now Z again has that promising bulge,
And 2013 will soon bring
Another delightful Zenyatta offspring
To make all our hearts sing.
And for you, Sue, we wish a special blessing
As you with fortitude
Deal with your life’s troubles,
Which, sad to say, recently include
The passing of that precious kitty, Mr. Bubbles
(May he in peace rest).
For the future, Sue, we wish you all the best,
And today, bunches of birthday happiness!
Happy birthday, Sue, and many, many happy returns!

Thanks So Very Much Trina you made my day. love Sue

Dear Sue / FL.
How I remember those “flashes” and yes, they do eventually end. I’m sorry to be so late in sending you a birthday wish. I’m afraid I got caught up in the Keeneland sale today. So many beautiful horses along with high hopes for the future with the yearlings.
I send high hopes for your future, too with a proper birthday celebration and the addition of a new special kitty to love. And, will you ever be the envy of those at the track when you wear your new Zenyatta tee shirt. May God bless you with many more birthdays to come. Marty R.
