Q:
I was wondering how Lane’s End handles the care of weanlings and yearlings. I know a number of larger operations more or less turn the kids out and only bring them in when it’s time for veterinary care or hoof trimming, with the idea that they’re just letting the babies be babies until the time they need to be prepared for yearling sales or training. I was just wondering if Lane’s End does this or if you guys do give more personal care to the little guys even before they need sales prepping or training!
Kelli Clark
Toms River, NJ
A: At Lane’s End we try to find the right balance between letting horses be horses and that extra bit of professional and personal care.
Our weanlings make the transition from the broodmare side of the farm to the yearling division in the month of December. At this point, we will separate the colts and fillies so the boys have their fields and the girls have theirs. This is a stressful time for these young horses so we keep their routine as similar as possible to what it was like at the broodmare division. This will reduce any additional stress and make their transition that little bit easier.
This routine consists of the weanlings/yearlings coming in from the fields at 7am. We lead them into the barn and run our hands down each horse’s leg. We can then feel if any has a cut, bump, swelling or heat in their legs. This also desensitizes them, so they are easier to touch and handle. They then go into their stalls and eat their breakfast. Feeding them inside allows us to monitor how much each horse eats, and alter their feeds accordingly seen as every horse is different and therefore has different nutritional needs.
Once they are finished eating, we will check their temperatures, pick their feet and administer any medication that is needed. We check temperatures daily. Normally you can tell if a horse is sick simply by observing their demeanor or by the fact that they have not eaten up, but sometimes they will not show any of the obvious signs. This is when taking their temperatures is essential. While we are in their stall taking their temperatures we will also pick their feet. As well as being good hoof care and horsemanship it also makes life much easier when the farrier comes !
After these essential daily chores are completed we have time for the vet or farrier to come if needed. Otherwise we will start grooming the horses lightly so they become used to what is in store during sales prep. As we get closer to prep time, we will start to break the yearlings to plastic bits. We leave the bits in their mouths as we groom them. Using the plastic bits create an easy transition to the metal bits that we use later on during sales prep. We also start to introduce them to the hose so that they are used to getting baths when we start our prep.
These additional tasks take us up until lunch time. At 1pm we will feed them their lunch and turn them out at 2pm. This lengthy turn out time of seventeen hours from 2pm until 7am the following morning is more than adequate time to allow horses be horses. They have that time to run, play and frolic. The concussion on their bones that they create from running and playing mixed with the nutrients that they ingest from our limestone enriched soils helps them to produce strong, healthy bones.
Therefore, I believe that we have the right balance here at Lane’s End between letting horses be horses with their lengthy turn out time and their extra bit of personal care and handling.

So much cooking! I had to feed like twenty five people for Thanksgiving. Hectic!
Now I’ve gotten a head start on my other crazy holiday; CHRISTMAS! I made a present for my riding coach, and i hope she likes it. It took FOREVER to get all the tiny details in place.

I’m also making a scrapbook for my mom with her mementos from our trip to Canada. I didn’t want her to not have anything under the Christmas tree this year like she did last year, so I made a commitment to myself that I would personally make this as pretty as I could, seeing as it is my last year at home and all.

Pati, those are so cool! And the scrap book idea is a marvel! You’re Mom will cherish that forever. Sometimes, home made gifts mean so much more, much more personable. Here’s an idea on the gifting part. Put the scrap book in a smaller box surrounded with tissue (wrapping) and next to it, a box of Kleenex. All put together tightly in one big box! Wrapped up with a big bow!!! Make sure, she unwraps the Kleenex first. She’ll be thrown off and once, she opens the scrap book, she’ll understand!

Her Majesty The Queen to send Carlton House to Australia’s first lady of racing
Posted by: Andrew Hawkins
Filled in: Australian Horse Racing | 4/12/2012 at 8:46am
Her Majesty The Queen is set to have her first horse permanently based in Australia.
Carlton House, who runs in Sunday’s Hong Kong Cup, will join the Gai Waterhouse stable next year, with next year’s Cox Plate a likely target.
Waterhouse, who is currently on her annual end-of-year trip to the United States, tweeted this morning: “Delighted and grateful to train HM the Queen’s Dante and Brig Gerard winner, Carlton House after the colt’s HK [Cup] run this Sunday.”
It has since been confirmed The Queen will remain as owner.
The strength of Waterhouse’s imports continues to grow – she will have Melbourne Cup runner-up Fiorente, The Metropolitan winner Glencadam Gold, Wyong Cup winner Julienas and English St Leger runner-up Michelangelo among her arsenal next year.

Keta thanks for sharing that great story.
I think that Ascot is very hard on older horses with going downhill and then uphill before the finish line. And the soft grass must be more difficult to run on that more firm grass.
I think that the Queen was influenced in decision by an amazing mare that she’s a fan of: Black Caviar.
The Queen is a feminist in a quiet way; she sent her very classy horse to a top female trainer. Lady Power! LOL

Royal Horse to be trained DownUnder:
Andrew Bensley has just reported on Skysportsradio (Tuesday 4 December, 9.33 am) that the Queen has announced that her horse, Carlton House will travel to Hong Kong to compete in the Vase on Sunday (under the training of Michael Stoutt), and then go on to Australia to be trained by Gai Waterhouse. Bensley went on to say that Her Majesty is delighted to be having her first horse trained in Australia.

Kathy R
This must be huge news!
Every sports/news/horse media outlet had a headline about it on Twitter.
Quite a kudo for Gai Waterhouse.
Keta
Kathy R.
Dear Keta: It’s certainly a feather in Gai’s cap – no-one in Aussie racing handles publicity like Gai – I’ve indicated elsewhere that Gai is determined to win the Melbourne Cup and accordingly has sent her husband off around the globe searching for the right horse. Robbie is one of those “colourful” racing characters – he’s a bookie, as is her son, but Robbie was warned off tracks in the country some years back after being caught up in what was known as the “Fine Cotton Affair” – a matter of horse substitution. Gai stood by her man, and is one very, very forthright lady. I said in a comment to Sheena, that the Queen probably gave her the horse to train simply to stop her talking! But we’ll just have to see how it all goes. At least it has stopped the chatter about that rotten jockey and his mates. Cheers. Kathy.

In Lingerie Retired From Racing
By Blood-Horse Staff Updated: Monday, December 3, 2012 4:35 PM
Juddmonte Spinster (gr. I) winner In Lingerie has been retired from racing and will be bred to two-time Cartier Horse of the Year Frankel.
Trained by Todd Pletcher for Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Gary Barber, the 3-year-old daughter of Empire Maker also scored in the March 24 Bourbonette (gr. III) and May 18 Black-Eyed Susan (gr. II), and was second in the Alabama (gr. I) and third in the Coaching Club American Oaks (gr. I). She retires with a record of 4-2-1 from seven starts, for career earnings of $712,265.

Keta,
I read this article and Wow, what will
this mating produce?
Keta
Janet,
The only concern I have is that In Lingerie is so young.
There has been a lot of chatter between owners, trainers, breeders,
and wrtiers about the need to set age limits for breeding in USA.
Concensus seems to be min of 4 for mares; 5 for stallions.
McKinsey released a report with many recommendations,
But, breeding was not a part of it.
Perhaps Sign or other Z-sters have an opinion on this.
Keta
Terri Z
Hi Keta,
I was diappointed that they didn’t let In Lingerie race longer, as she is a talented filly. But Frankel’s stud career will start in 2013, when she is four.
The only reason I could think that they would breed her next year and not race her is that there is concern about Frankel’s stud fee going up in price.
Frankel could easily command the price of AP Indy or Stormcat in stud fees. Quality mares are coming to him from all over the world.
Speaking of studs, I think the best bargain is Shackleford. His dam was broodmare of the year and he has a stirling pedigree, with Dr. Fager, Roberto, and Stormcat. He retired healthy, uninjured, and strong.
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club
Janet, Keta and Terry Z,
Definately think that fillie/mares should be reproductively mature
to begin breeding. Not sure that is 3 years old. If not, nurturing
skills and capability of growing a healthy fetus could be compromised.
I do think “everyone” from around the world has submitted “their” names to Juddmont/Frankel to try and be a part of his first crop, probably for $$$ as Terry Z said and many other things. Remember Zenny is from Street Cry’s first crop, are they more virile at that time ??? Not sure. Also, Juddmonte
seems to want to “market” Frankel to the breeder/owner’s so they keep his foals rather than selling them.
Also, one thought came to me today as Bullet Train’s annoucement was
to be last weekend. Wonder if Juddmonte has restricted the information
so they could build Frankel’s book first. One never knows how microscopic the contracts for selling horses can be without being in the bloodstock business. How many US breeder’s would sent their mares to the UK if Bullet Train were available here? Needless to say, it is prestigious to have a breeding stallion with a good/great race record. The pedigree is also part of the package and Bullet Train has 3/4 of Frankel’s package.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT !!!

dear kathy this is good news about carlton house coming out to australia have you heard the good news about william and kate expecting their first baby downside she is in hospital with severe morning sickness we all hope everything will go well with the pregnancy how is nelly these days? hugs sheena
Kathy R.
Dear Sheena: Heard the baby news when the alarm went off this morning – won’t the tabloids be pleased!! Hope she gets over the morning sickness though – very unpleasant. I like Carlton House, and hope Gai looks after him – her stable runs on a “skin and bone” philosophy, and she is desperate to win a Melbourne Cup – hence sending her husband off on a buying spree worldwide. Nice if you have the money, but a bit depressing for people here who have perfectly good staying stallions sitting about in the paddock unused, because the current trend is for instant success. They all need to go back and study Bart Cummings. Gai has also applied for a licence to train horses for the jumps in Warnambool – jumps racing is very much on the nose down here, but Gai hasn’t won at jumps, so off she goes. She is a very bubbly trainer (a former actress) and presents a highly polished view of racing, but does have a tendency to over cook. I guess if she fails with Carlton House the Queen can always bring back some time in the Tower?! Hugs, KathyR.

Poor Kate, the couple have been under
scrutiny since their marriage about miscarriages,
fertility clinic, so on and so forth.
Leave the couple alone and allow them to enjoy
this experience together. But that is to much to
hope for in this day and age.

Dear Sheena,
So very glad you gave us the scoop on William and Diana.
Our tabloids have had her having a baby for months and when
you read the article it is quite unclear. Thanks so much for
keeping us up to date. So very exciting for them, they are
the best couple.
Love both of your comments ( sheena and Kathy R) about Carlton House and his “move”
to Australia. Hope he does well down under.

Dear Sheena,
Whoops !!!, “Kate” instead of “Diana”.

dear kathy difficult to imagine our queen choosing a trainer such as you describe it’ll be off with her headif things dont work out!!!!it’s all baby news over here now!hugs sheena
Kathy R.
Dear Sheena: Gai can talk the leg off an iron pot – Her Maj. probably sent the horse to her to keep here quiet! I can just imagine your Fleet street blokes – will drive the poor couple nuts for the next nine months! And Downunder some of the radio stations are having competitions for a name – Bruce and Sheila are leading the pack at present. No wonder we call it the silly season. Hugs KathyR.
Kathy R.
Dear Sheena: Sorry, forgot to answer your query re Nelly. She’s going back into full work in his stable from January, with the aim for a return in the Lightning Stakes (now renamed in her honour) in February. I’m interested though that Peter Moody is saying (and I’m quoting from Sportsman racing paper, 4 December) “We’re very happy with her but obviously extremely conscious of the situation we are in with her that we don’t want to see her beaten now. We certainly won’t hesitate to retire her along the way but I’m hopeful that we do get her back to the track in the great form that she’s shown all along.” From where I sit, the only way to not see her beaten is to retire her!!
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club
Dear Kathy R,
Thanks so much for the detailed information, the link I posted

Here is a breeding story. A mare who won one race in her career and a sire whose stud fee was $1000.00 together produced the wonderful Wise Dan. And it happened after only 40 years of practice by the breeder. Dan fans, this article is for you.

Max, I love the Dans. And they have Big Red on both sides of their pedigree. When I saw the video of Wise Dan arriving at Santa Anita, he so much reminded me of Secretariat in his conformation, attitude, and coloring. What a horse!!! He’s going to show what Big Red could have done at age 4 and above.

That is a great story. Thank You for posting. Wiseman’s Ferry is at Dana Point Farm in Pensylvania. He is gorgeous. Hard to believe that his stud fee was once l000.00 .
I would love to go visit him. Go in and look at the Pedigree on both side He and Lisa Danielle. Very nice Pedigree. Ithink oh gosh if I am remembering right Affirmed is on one side of the pedigree too.. I think on the dam’s side. I believe Secretariat is in the pedigree on Wiseman’s Ferry’s side.
No wonder I love Wise Dan So much.
I hope I am remembering this right.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
A Correction. I looked it up. Affirmed is on Wiseman’s Ferry’s side too. Oh gosh, I thought he was in there . I was close. But Ok I am going to have to go in and study that a bit as I sawBold ruler and Something Royal on the Dam’s side too. This is so enteresting.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Secretariat is on Lisa Danielle’s side also. What is this called in the Breeding Practice.
Max
Peggy (N). Morton Fink mentioned in some interviews that Wise Dan looks like his mother. What do you think? I love Dan as a special kind of horse with that talent of all surfaces. I especially like the name of his dam sire, Wolf Power.

Ann. Very disappointed not to see Paynter on the list. However Paynter seems to have already won the most important reward of them all, looking death right in the eye, fighting for his life, getting well against the odds and returning to a good life. That horse hero has a phenomenal will. He has taught us all a lesson in TB courage. He also now has an army of loyal fans routing for him whatever he does next. Without Paynter, I voted for Wise Dan. The ole chestnuts are ruling this year.

Vox Populi finalists not so Popular
Horse Racing Nation 12/4/2012 7:23 AM
With all due respect to the fine race horses, Frankel, Wise Dan, Royal Delta, I’ll Have Another, and Shanghai Bobby, the good folks that decide on the finalists for the Secretariat “Vox Populi” Award have unceremoniously left off the two most popular horses in America.
Those two horses, of course being Paynter and Shackleford, bar none.
It’s not only a swing and a miss, but to go 0-for-2, is frankly shocking. If they were looking to name five champions … they succeeded. If, however, they were attempting to reward the love and admiration of the fans of our sport … they failed miserably.
As someone who is out there with the fans at the track, and talking with them on Horse Racing Nation, Facebook, and Twitter on an hourly basis, I urge the folks who decided on this year’s finalists to consult me in the future. I will be more than happy to be the voice of the fans. This year’s decision did not speak for the fans, but rather only served to make the decision makers look out of touch.

Sheena. Neptune as a dressage horse! That is wonderful news. Will check for videos.
Glad to know that you are okay.
Max
Sheena. Found this article and photo of Neptune working at his dressage. He is doing well. Hope that Kauto decides that he wants to have this as a second career.

Love his name, ” Nipper”.
He is so handsome.

Dear Sheena,
Frankel is on the cover of the 2012 bloodhorse calendar and he is named after
a US trainer Bobby Frankel. Although, foaled in the UK, he is 1/2 American in
my eyes.
It sure sounds like we are going to hear the patter of his foals hooves over here, too.
Go Frankel !!!
Max
I was first mainly interested in Frankel because of the Bobby Frankel connection. That connection largely ensured that the horse would be recognized by an audience beyond just Europe. If you check his pedigree, Frankel’s talent is rooted in North American horses, namely Northern Dancer. The last winner of the English Triple Crown, Nijinsky, also a son of Northern Dancer, was born in Canada and was owned by an American. After his racing career was over, Nijinsky returned to Kentucky.

Dear Sign: The prayer really, really touched the spot today – having some worries here with my 92 year old Mum, and have now come down with shingles. So thanks so much – it really helped. Hugs, KathyR.
Max
KathyR. That can be very painful. I hope that this sickness goes away very soon. Best wishes to you and your mother.

Dear Kathy R,
Wishing your Mum a speedy recovery.
The medications now work fairly well.
Am so glad the prayer was helpful.
My mum (82 yo) came to live with me for
2 years after her stroke and it
was a worrisome time, but also
very special time to spend so much
time with her as an adult and do
somethings with her that a child
is not able to do.
Wishing your mum a speedy recovery.

Hope your Mum will be OK,Kathy R.
Give her a big hug from all of us.

Must be something about international travel and Aussie horses:

Dear Kathy R,
Love this article. Jethro always had a girlfriend, the mare would always call to him,
when he was working in the arena. The good boy that he was he did not bat an
eye and stayed focused. But when he returned to the pature, she was waiting at the gate, he would go in and start herding her away back into the field for some
alone time. One morning after a lesson, this hussy quarter horse came in the
arena, she walked up to him swishing her tail, with dreamy eyes seems like she
was saying “come over her big boy and I’ll show you a good time”. He walked
right up to her, with me on him and nuzzled her face. It was sooo cute, if only he had his equipment, their might have been some fireworks !!!

My Dear Z Family:
Just got back on line. I am exhausted from the move. Arthritis acting up in all joints. Miss all of you. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Max, Sue, Ann, Sign, Barb W., Auntie Judy, Sandy, Peggy and all my Z’sters:
Thank you all for your kind wishes; means so much to me. Lola Mae is adjusting nicely. The test will be when I have to leave her alone for the first time. Right now I take her with me while I unpack the car and make trips upstairs. She waits patiently and then I take her back upstairs with me on the last trip. I miss Charlie. Haven’t been to see him in over a week. I do talk with Angela and she said he’s doing great. His foot looks good and he is wearing bell boots.
It will take me a few days to recover. I have swollen arthritic joints (especially my ankles) so I’m considering bell boots too. (ha, ha). Love and Hugs to all of you, JB

Dear Judy, Moving is a hard task. Fill the tub with nice, hot (maybe bubbly)water and just soak and relax your mind and muscles. It will feel sooooooo goood! Rest and recharge.
Hugs,

Dear Judy,
Have been thinking of you over these past few days and hope the move
went as well as possible. Some nice ice packs for those joints work
greaty. Walgreens has this wonderful cloth, stretchy wrap that you can
put an ice pack in and wrap it around ankles and knees. Maybe bell boots are a good thing for you too. Glad Charlie is better and wearing his
bell boots. They really work wonders.
Hugs to you and Lola Mae, that cut little black sweetie pie.

Dear Judy B.,
You take care of yourself now. Just relax and get some much needed rest from the move. Let Lola Mae be your doctor/nurse!
So glad that Papa Charlie is doing well with the bell boots.
Feel better soon!
Best wishes and hugs, too!

Good to hear from you JB.
Glad the move is over…time for some equine therapy!!! The smell of the barn and a touch of Papa Charlie will make all of those aches and pains go away. Hugs to you!!!!
