We have an exciting five days of posts planned for next week. Each day, we will be announcing a new product from the Zenyatta Shop, and on Thanksgiving day we will post the Breeders’ Cup fan photo gallery. If you haven’t sent in your pictures, there is still plenty of time to do so (see here).

Q:

I would like to know what type of regular “maintenance” Zenny receives. By this I mean having teeth and feet checked and anything else that keeps her in such great shape.

A:Like all the mares, Zenyatta has her feet trimmed at the start of every month. Regular visits by the farrier are very important in order to keep the feet in good shape and prevent cracks or flairs from forming. There is an old saying,”No foot, no horse,” and this is very true and especially with mares when heavily in foal.

With regards to teeth, all of the mares have their teeth floated once a year to prevent hooks, waves and uneven teeth wear. This is performed at least ten days post foaling and before the mare is bred again, as this is the safest time to work on teeth.

Zenyatta, like all mares in foal, will have her checkup at the end of November to ensure everything is progressing as normal with the pregnancy. Fecal egg counts are performed twice a year and depending upon the results a worming and vaccinating program is established in order to keep her and her baby as healthy as possible.

The rest of her time is spent in the paddock relaxing with her friends, enjoying the green grass and nice weather.

      Yes, when she got to the stretch and turned it on I just about lost my voice!!!lol! A wonderful race (dazzeling!) and a good ride by Corey!! It won’t be long before everyone can pronounce her name. Loved it!

      So wonderful that Ebby won! Reminded of her big Sis’s stretch runs. I am so glad that Mr. Sherriffs allowed to take her time and tell him when she was ready, just like Queen Z. I predict great success for E.

    My first smile of the day. I logged into Calracing just as they were loading in the gate. Ebby ran just like her big sister – come from way behind, get clear on the outside and burn the track up!!! I know John is smiling from ear-to-ear and wondering just what he has on his hands now. Since she beat the Mosses horse, I’m wondering if they wished they owned her. She looked great!

      Dear Sharon,
      Not possible for The Mosses to own “E”. She was never put up for sale.

      “V” was in foal with her when sold to Coolmore for $10 million. Part of the
      deal, Eric Kronfeld made with Coolmore was he was to keep the Bernardini foal “V” was carrying. And that was “E”. She will be replacing “V” in Kronfeld’s broodmare band when she is done racing.

      This man is a genius breeder !!!! He has created a wonderful family.

      Just watched “E” win her maiden on Calracing. If anyone is intersted, easy to sign up, quick few minutes and you are in and can watch live racing and replays.

      Great Great Great site !!!!

      She actually came from back of the pack a little different from Zenny, but seem to have a nice turn of foot. Initially 8 lengths behing the leaders and In the last furlong with the whip she rebroke and won. Great ride by Corey Nackatani !!!!!

      WHOO HOOO Zenny, your little sis is pretty good and your breeder is a genius and your mom, “V” is some producer. Hope you are too !!!!

      Interesting Ray Paulick admits he was wrong, but who knew. She did need blinkers
      so is a little more laid back and less focused than Zenny, but a very nice race and a
      wonderful talent.

        I noted that E raced with Lasix too. For me, if JS thinks it’s the right thing to do for the horse, than there is no doubt in my mind. He’s one trainer that we know always puts the horses welfare first. Hugs, JB

        • JudyB. Well said. Mark Casse who trains horses for Lane’s End supports its use when needed. He’s a reputable trainer too. Sure hope Little Zenyatta will recover.

          Actually it was announced that she would NOT be racing with Lasix?
          Did that change? I thought Eric Kronfeld was going to have her
          race without for the possible breeding issues.

          As long as trainers keep up with fluid and weight loss and symptoms of dehydration in their horses, it is not a problem. Just like any human taking
          Lasix, they can lose too much water and get dehydrated and lose weight.
          Healthy horses should be able replace their own the fluid loss with a few extra buckets of water and they will be thirsty if they are “behind in fluid”.

          The problem comes when they lose, too much weight and don’t feel well after. Bill Casner did a great kind of “study” at Winstar, when he was there.
          He weighted the horses and monitored how they tolerated Lasix and if they
          did not he did not use it.

        • JudyB. I just noticed from your chart that all of the other horses had raced at least once before. I was unaware that E was the only one who was racing for the very first time. She looked like a real pro out there against these more experienced fillies, especially how she ran calmly from behind with that turn of foot. The girl’s definitely got innate talent from V and Bernie.

          I guess it is a mute point for her as she is not 2 years old.

          They are restricting the 2 year olds from using Lasix, I guess maybe
          only in the Breeders Cup though???

          My sister and I went to our local casino where Ebby’s race was simulcast and I played an Exacta Box with Ebby and Belonging. I thought B finished well. She is a very pretty filly and I love her name. She was bred by Mr. and Mrs. Moss as well. Hugs, JB

      not Zenny, but she sure has some talent.

    Dear Zenyatta I wanted to tell you that I introduced my Homerooms to your half sister. They all agreed that Ebloiussante will be their next horse.       You guy will have an interesting 2013. Baby Z 13 will be arriving in March ish. Plus we all get to follow Ebby on her quest. I hope the kids enjoy the spring racing. It always has a twist and a new face. I love horse racing and Zenyatta will always be my favorite. Good luck kids in homeroom 215-217.
