Q:
I always hear that the large Kentucky farms (and others, too) have their horses in the barn during the day and turn them out into paddocks/pastures at night. What is the reasoning behind that schedule?
Debra Medlock
Fall River Mills, CA
A:We bring them up to the barns in the daytime for a number of reasons. We like to monitor their feed intake, so feeding them inside ensures that each horse is getting their fair share of feed and the right amount depending on the individual. We also like to check temperatures and make sure each horse is healthy and free of any kicks, bumps and bruises.
Handling the youngsters is an essential part of their education and makes them much more manageable for the farrier and vet. It also allows them to relax and rest for a while and have a break from the weather. We put fans on them in the summer whilst in the barn so they can cool off. We also have automatic fly spray systems installed in the barns so they are all quite happy to come in during the heat of the day. In the winter they enjoy bedding down in the straw for a few hours and warming up.

Stonestreet Buys Rachel’s Full Sister
By Deirdre B. Biles, @BH_DBiles Updated: Wednesday, November 7, 2012 2:44 PM
Samantha Nicole, a yearling full sister to 2010 Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra, has found a fitting new home with Barbara Banke’s Stonestreet Stables during the second session of the Keeneland November breeding stock sale.
Stonestreet, in partnership with Harold McCormick, raced Rachel Alexandra, who lives at Banke’s Stonestreet Farms in Kentucky.
She doesn’t quite have the crazy eye that Rachel does,” Banke said. “She’s not totally perfect, but we liked a lot of what we saw. A lot of the pieces are there. She’s got a little sesamoiditis, so we’ll give her a little time up here and then on to Florida and we’ll see how she can do. We know the family very well.”
Samantha Nicole is out of the stakes-winning Roar mare Lotta Kim. Gainesway, agent for the Dolphus C. Morrison dispersal, consigned the bay yearling to the Keeneland auction.
Samantha Nicole will be broken at the Vinery Florida near Ocala.
“I’ve done well buying sisters,” Banke said. “I have Kauai Katie and Malibu Cougar, who are full sisters (by Malibu Moon ). We’re trying to build families in our breeding operation and it’s hard to get those great pedigrees, so I’m excited.”

What a lucky girl. To live at Stonestreet and be cared for in the way they do their mares is truly a blessing for her.
We can only hope and pray for quality owners like Ms. Banke and the Mosses.

Dear Keta and Z fans,
Heard their is another storm on the way to the Northeast that is carrying lots of
snow as the weather is getting chilly. This whole storm thing is terrible.
Like we were hit with Tropical Storm Alison that came and came again, flooding
everything in her path twice. Then later that year, Rita and Katrina hit New Orleans.
Just such a hassle, maybe living in snow country might be better ???
Kathy R.
Dear Sign and Keta: Just trying to cheer you all up – but you’re welcome to move Downunder – we even have quite good racing (but are a long, long way from Zenyatta!). Praying that the new lot of storms behave themselves. Cheers.

Have a question.
Saw where Three Chimneys just released its Stallion fees for 2013.. I know I have told how I love Point Given. His is the only fee listed as “Private” I know I assume they just want to negotiate. I believe his owner died a few years ago. I believe he was from Royalty.. Just wondering why they decided to go that route with Point Given. I know they want to get the most and I don’t blame them. But, I may be wrong but doesn’t seem it was like that in the past. Not sure. Anyone have any thoughts on this.
Would they be trying to be limiting him some. I think he would be aroung 14. Just pondering this. I have several pictures of me with him. Just love him so. He is just a great horse.

signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club
Dear Suzanne,
Thought it might be so, substantial stud fee and maybe picky about his “book” and maybe limiting numbers as well ???
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Suzanne and Sign, That’s what I was pretty much thinking too about Point Given. Thought tthat they may be wanting to limit him some too. Thanks for your input. I think thats pretty good, because you don’t want to overbook them I don’t think. Especially with the ones getting older. I was going up there this year but just didn’t make it. I had asked if a couple of special horses would be there and they told me Point Given would be. He is just the best Yes very gentle and kind. Know Gary Stevens loves him too.
Love always talking about Point Given. Hope to get back up there sometimes soon.

Dearest Zenyatta,
I love this photo of you. It truly shows the kindness and love in your eyes. I met your human Mom and Dad last Friday evening. They are wonderful, kind people. I thanked them for sharing you with all of us, because we all love you so much, as well as your first born, 12Z.
Lanes End, Charles and everyone, thank you so much for all the updates, photos, videos, and answered questions. You are all the best. Charles, it is obvious, Zenyatta loves you, and you her. We cant ask for more than that.
My trip to the Breeders Cup was like a fairy tale come true. Absolutely spectacular, and worth every penny. Hoping to go again next year and maybe Saratoga too. Meeting all the Dumplings was more than I ever expected. Trina and Diana rolled out the red carpet for us. Trina is a doll baby, as many of you know from her talented birthday poems, Diana S, aka, Miz Bossy Pants, is the absolute best cat herding I have ever met. Knowing them both is a blessing I will never take for granted. Debbie from Ky is now one of my bestest friends forever. What a doll she is. Barbara Wood and her husband Alan: she is the quintessential sourthen belle and he the quintessential southern gentleman. Sandy from NE Ohio, and Brenda Springer are both lovely and charming. Could listen to Brenda’s accent all day. Linda from NJ had one amazing hat, which she made. Too Ciute. Sue Noel, I have a fantastic photo of you and Mike Smith, and did not get one for me, LOL. And I am the one with the major crush on him. Sue if you need a copy ot this photo, let me know and I will make you a copy. It was also such a pleasure to meet you. Sorry I am rambling and know I am forgetting people. It was just so wonderful to meet so many dumplings. Zenyatta has amassed quiete an eclectic, wonderful group of people, all of whom I consider dear, dear friends. It is the Z magic!!!
And finally for this post, congratulations to my new love Fort Larned. I loved you long before the Breeders Cup. I bet on you, I was jumping up and down like a wild kid, while you ran a beautiful race and won the BC. You are one gorgeous and very talented boy. Hope to see you back next year. MMM was my second choice, and look where he placed. Not a bad day at the track!
I know I am rambling, please forgive me. My thoughts and prayers are with Judy Glore. And also those in the storm of the northeast. Love to all. Zenyatta, my angel, I love you forever. Darlene

♥ Auntie Judy aka JAG / So. Calif.
♥ Hi Darlene!
I was doing my usual “thang” with Karen Gogue at the track “trolling” :-) She takes great videos!!
At the party, too! If we hadn’t been over to where the festivities were we would have missed the bidding war for a trip to meet The Queen AND Prince Z!!! They also had a silent auction for some really beautiful photos, etc. three saddle cloths (replicas). I bid on the #4 (her 2009 BC win) but was out bid :-( Z Dumpling, Terri King, got the #1 (purple one.)
For those of you who come back next year – and those of you who didn’t make it this year – we need to have a special lunch/dinner prior to Saturday. NOT BC Saturday! It is far too hectic getting out of the lot & to a restuarant. IMO the Z party is also very difficult to visit and chat while mingling with the Team Zenyatta!!!
Auntie Judy is still winding down from the long weekend :-)

Darlene–you are too kind.! We thought everyone was top-notch too! What a great group! It really exceeded expectations by far. Now I know what all the Dumplings we met look like, especially you in your cute Z-hat. I didn’t think you would be a blonde. I didn’t think Kimberly Potter would be a tall brunette. I didn’t think Sue Noel was a redhead (despite having seen pictures). It was just one of the most memorable experiences of my life. Definitely agreeing with JAG about the traffic being the worst thing Saturday night.
Big hugs.

Dear Darlene,
Thanks so much for sharing the wonderful experience of BC 2012.
Sounds like it was sooo very special. Fort Larnd was on my radar, but
never expected a win, he is one very special boy, at 3 yo. Not many
3 year olds have won the Classic. In fact when Bernie ran, he lost to
Invasor because of experience. So glad Fort Larnd was able to step
up to the plate and anxious to watch him next year.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
First of all, I want to tell everyone what a treat Darlene was! Brenda and I had dinner with her and Debbie G on Thursday evening and just had the BEST time! They are two of the nicest people anywhere, and we also enjoyed driving back and forth to the track with them on Friday.
Darlene has already said it all so well – I’ve been trying to think how to put the whole experience into words, and it is very difficult! Everything worked so well (except for the traffic after Saturday’s races), all of the SoCal people and Diana Stuart were so gracious and kind to us “foreigners,” Brenda was the kindest, most patient, most fun roomie ever, the weather was fantastic, being in the ambience of Santa Anita was beyond belief (even if those of you at home did have a MUCH better view of the races than we did), seeing those mountains in person was really something, but meeting everyone was the BEST part. There are now almost 30 Dumplings that I would recognize on sight, and as I’ve told everyone here, it was like going to a “family reunion” (except for the fact that you had never met any of the relatives before!). We truly were one big, happy family group, and the experience is something I will NEVER forget. For those of you who remember this thread from before, it didn’t even matter that all I could wear were my white oxfords! I dragged along a pair of sandals for the party and never even put them on.
JAG is right – the next time we need to have an event just for “us” because as nice as the party was in some respects, the logistics were difficult, the crowd was large and noisy, so it was not the optimal time to meet and/or chat with folks.
A huge thank you to everyone involved for a truly great four days!
Barbara Wood (Texas)
Agreeing with everything you said. It was even lovelier in retrospect, now that we have had a bit of time to unwind.
@Darlene and Debbie–you are both adorable and such fun!
@Sue Noel–seeing Barnaby’s pics was such a treat.
@Dawn Conrad–it was a joyful surprise to meet you.
@Linda in NJ– we’ll never forget our hunt for the car(s). Hope you are ok in the storm!
ALL the Dumplings are the best!
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Darlene,
Thank you, Jag, Barbara Sandy everyone for letting us know what a wonderful time you had. Sounds like it was just wonderful. Its in my bucket list of things to do. So is going to Newmarket to visit Frankel. LOL, That was just a fantastic picture of him today. They said he arrived today. One of my Coworkers today told me she could get me a deal on some lodging as she has family in the area. I would just love to go. What a beautiful boy. Hope someone saw that picture and will post it over here.. I know I need to learn.

Seeking Saratoga’s Racing History
November 8, 2012
Beginning in May 2013, the Saratoga 150 celebration will mark the sesquicentennial of the Thoroughbred racing in my hometown. The four-day program in 1863, inaugurated by John Morrissey, was such a success that he and his partners, among them William Travers and Leonard Jerome, built Saratoga Race Course in 1864. It is the oldest sporting venue in the country still in operation.
This Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Museum will hold an open house to which people can bring photos, programs, video, collectibles, and memorabilia. Scanners will be provided to create digital images of photographs; other materials can be loaned or donated to the Museum. All items submitted will be considered available to the Sesquicentennial Committee, the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, and the Saratoga Springs History Museum.
The Sesquicentennial Committee can also receive photo submissions via e-mail at info@saratoga150.com, and you can e-mail the Committee with descriptions of larger items or extensive collections that you think would be of interest.

Dear Kathy R,
Love this photo of Green Moon, eating grass out of that very expensive
Gold cup. Oh my that forelock, SOY definately has competition. Green
Moon’s looks a little more rock starish, very full and pulled to the side
and a little frayed, maybe from having to braid it or pull it back though.
These forlocks must be an Aussie thing??? Who in his pedigree or SYT
pedigree has these gorgeous, sexy forelocks. Tooo bad the mares don’t
love them has much as we human females. HA HA HA !!!
Kathy R.
Forgot to add – doesn’t it make the beautiful Zenyatta look so elegant and refined by comparison! What a Lady!!
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club
Dear Kathy R,
Is is very funny how the mares look different from the stallions/geldings. I guess with
all species. HDG and Royal Delta are definitely very feminine, too.
Zenny is feminine in a more wholesome way like her sire Street Cry. Darley always
apologizes for his looks, but he is a very masculine, handsome stallion, not pretty
like Bernie, but we humans all look different too. If I had a mare that was quality
enough, I would probably chose Street Cry for her mate. Love Bernie, too, though.
Keta
Kathy R
He looks rough and tough–like a bad boy all the girls fall in love with.
There is a certain appeal in that look.

AMERICANS TO SWOOP ON AMERICAIN!
That is the heading on a piece reported in Sportsman today (Friday 9 November) by Shayne O’Cass. He goes on to say:
“Melbourne Cup winner Americain is in line to become the first Melbourne Cup winner to serve as a shuttle sire, with a deal set to be announced within the next 24 hours. While it was originally thought that the French galloper would stand in Europe, a major American farm has now emerged as the front runner to secure his northern hemisphere services. Leading Victorian based bloodstock agent Robert Roulston, who found Americain for his owners prior to his 2010 Cup win told Sportsman discussions were taking place with a “substantial American farm” while also fielding interest from three Australian farms. Roulston said the camp want to complete the American side of things before they talk to an Australian stud but there remains a strong chance that the stallion will shuttle between Australia and the USA. Despite Americain’s obvious appeal to French and wider European breeders, his pedigree is one that breeders in the USA are thoroughly familiar with. His sire, Dynaformer is the sire of 117 stakeswinners including ill-fated Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro and is a regular fixture at the top end on the North American sire rankings. Americain’s dam, America, is by Blushing Groom’s epic son Arazi, who travelled from Europe to win the 1991 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile in breath-taking-order.”
signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club
Dear Kathy R,
Very interesting, since Dynaformer passed this year, his progeny are going to
be very valuable to the US. I bet it has to be Darley or Coolmore KY ???
Although Dynaformer stood at Three Chimney’s. They are a much smaller
breeding operation. Point of Entry a 3 year old, who raced in the BC Turf Mile
is also a very valuable stallion prospect as his sire is also Dynaformer.
Wonder what type of personality Americain has, none seem to get that impossible,
difficult personality of their sire, thank goodness, but he was a very special Sire
for the US.

signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club
Dear Sheena,
Frankel is looking down at the kitty wondering, Is that all their is to this life of
a stud???? I guess I am going to have to create some action. He is probably
confused as he sooo much loves to race. It is sooo unfair to retire him in his
prime. In the Zenyatta documentary, when Jerry Moss retired Zenyatta in 2009,
Dottie, Ann and John were very upset. Dottie said, she is just getting good and in
her prime. Maybe Frankel will make them send him back to the track ????
Max
Sheena and Sign. I also thought that Frankel looked a little on the sad side. I agree with Sign that he is gone from racing too soon. I would feel worse except for that great ole chestnut Wise Dan. With luck our Danny will be racing for at least another year. He’s getting faster and smarter with age, and he runs well on all surfaces. When Dan first went international and won against those Euros at Woodbine, he showed that he is a magnificent miler. Wolf Power, your grandson has done you proud.

@ Darlene Daniels-You hit the nail on the head!! Friday at the Breeders Cup WAS like a fairy tale!! Daughter Dana and I were there from 8:30 AM to 10 PM and the whole thing was like some wonderful, wonderful dream!! Now that I am back home,it almost seems as though I didn’t really experience it—but–I did!! It wasw SO wonderful to meet YOU and we both enjoyed talking with you SO much!! I haven’t had a chance to show Barnaby your message on the poster for him yet,as Dana is mailing the tube with all my posters and Wild Horse pins to me as it was one too many things to carry on the plane–but,as soon as it gets here I will take it down to him and take a photo of him with it! I DID give him your other message though, and the other messages that were sent to him through me. I think he DID miss me a little, though I know Sue took great care of him. I would really LOVE to have a copy of the pic you took of Mikey and me!!! The one Dana took, the flash did not go off. My address is : P. O. Box 570,Sun Valley,ID 83353. We do not have home delivery in either Sun Valley or Ketchum ( as well as in a lot of other small towns in Idaho)–everyone just goes to the P.O. to pick their mail, and to meet friends–picking up mail,as well as grocery shopping in our store, is quite the social occasion!!Can you believe what a fabulous day we all had??? WOW–just WOW!!!!!
From the time we got there until the moment we left, every minute was fun and filled with amazing happenings. When we were waiting in line to go in,a darling gal from Arizona named Janice. She saw our tags and talked to us. She saw us several more times during the day and was so friendly. She was not doing the party but LOVES Zenyatta. Once we got to our seats and settled in the first person I met up there was our darling Dawn!!! I just couldn’t believe it!! After looking forward to meeting her for so long to be face to face with her was overwhelming!! I cried and was just SO very thrilled!! For those of you who have not yet had the opportunity to meet her,let me tell you,she is even more wonderful than you can imagine!!!! She was so great to us all day and took me around to meet Zenny’s team at the party so that I didn’t miss anyone! I felt as though I’d known her forever!! Then,we met Barnaby’s Auntie Trina–then I just lost it!! She is SO amazing!! We hugged until I was afraid I’d break her in two!! Then we met Brenda and Sandy and it felt as though I’d known them forever too!! We all sat together for the resyt of the day and just gabbed and gabbed like family–which, come to think if it–we are!!! As the day went on,we roamed around some between races, getting a great photo at the Zenny tent and checking out all the great things there, getting fun lunch goodies from the tents showcasing all kinds of great things and getting some horsey photos at the paddock and as the horses were headed for the paddock. It was so thrilling to see Rosie win–and then to see Mikey win–WOW!!
The party was SO great!! It was so crowded that it was kind of hectic, but the atmosphere was so exciting and we just kept meeting more and more Dumplings—it was simply amazing!! I felt like I was at a really great family reunion with family that I had loved for years but had just not seen in a long time!! Such love and affection in the air and such welcoming vibes from each one we met—I was just floating on a cloud of happiness all night!! To meet the Mosses was just beyond incredible. They were so lovely and gracious–and Ann is even lovelier than her photographs show!! Got to talk to her several times and rode down with Ann and Jerry in the elevator when we were all leaving. After we all said good night, they walked off together toward their car and Jerry slipped his arm around her in the sweetest way–it is an image I will never forget!!The perfect end to a perfect day!!!
I saw a post from someone who was there saying they were disappointed in the food–I,for one,was not there for the food!! It was all about the fellowship and the love–and THAT was there in the greatest abundance possible!! After the day those at the Frontrunner had put in,I was happy to have what we were serbved–there was plenty and it was stuff you could carry around with you while you were visiting if you wanted to,and there were plenty of lovely desserts. I think we were the luckiest folks ever to have that party to go to and to have the experiences we shared. I’ll be forever grateful to the Mosses for making it all possible and for everyone who worked so hard to make it all happen!!! It was a day and evening I will never forget and I look forward to doing it all agin next year!! Dana and I are already planning to go again if we are lucky enough to have another” Zenny Day” at the track!! She loved meeting everyone she did and loved seeing my happiness (she really IS the best kid in the WHOLE world,as I’ve always called her!! She made my whole 10 day stay there such a happy time!! Next year,we’ll plan to do more of the “extra” things –we just had tickets for Friday and she had other events planned for the other days,so we missed out on more time with the Zsters. Saturday,we had Symphony tickets and her hubby was home sick all week,so we spent some time with him during the day watching the BC on TV.
@ Pati–I’m so glad you made it there–I kept asking about you all day Friday–and at the party–I had hoped to meet you! Maybe next year!!
Guees I’d better sign off for tonight and get home. Will give you all Barnaby and Traveller updates tomorrow, before this turns into a book!!
Godd night, beloved Dumplings–and thank you SO much for making me so very happy on Friday–I will never lose the glow of your friendship!! Love and hugs to all!!! Sweet dreams!! Sue.

Dear Sue,
What a lovely account of the days at the 2012 Breeder’s Cup. Feeling the Love of
Team Zenyatta and the Love the Mosses have for her and all of her fans is sooo
very special for them and us. We are very very very lucky people.
Thanks for sharing such a wonderful experience, hope Barnaby got over your
being gone, maybe if you show him a photo of Zenny, he will say, “HUBBA, HUBBA,
HUBBA what a nice looking girl, if only ????, dream Barnaby, dream !!!!” Dreams do come true !!!!
Pati- So Happy from BC!!
I know!! I saw many people, but before I had time to go up and talk to anyone, they disappeared on me!! I saw ma’dam Trina, looking like the classy lady she is! I saw Dawn (I think, that’s what the tag said. LOL) and I saw a few other people. I got an autograph from all of team Z, but I missed Mikey. :-( Oh well, I’ll get him one day. Can’t avoid signing my racing form forever! lol I was in an orange shirt, and a purple scarf, with a purple purse, and black dress pants! You may have seen me!
I have to write some more Zenyatta pieces, so I can share them with Team Z one day! That is my dream for my writing. To be approved by Team Z.
I can’t go next year, but if it ever comes to NY, I can make it there from my college!

Pati,
We ALL looked and looked for you! How could we have missed you? Didn’t you talk to any of us? That was a real disappointment.

Pati- So Happy from BC!!
Oh no! Did you really? I was sitting at the bar with my dad, right in front of the stage. I had a full view of the speakers! I was near the guy who started the “Zenyatta” chant.
