Q:
How much ‘training’ do the yearlings undergo (in handling, etc.) and what is the next step in their development (ie, when they are introduced to bridle/saddle, and eventually ridden, gate training). Do they ‘graduate’ to another location/farm where they are taught these things?
Sue MacPhee
Toledo, OH
A:“Training” begins at the time the horses are weaned at Lanes End and continues until they leave the farm. Horses are taught to lead, walk and stand while traveling to and from the barn as weanlings and into their yearling year. This is a very important stage in development where they build a cohesive bond with humans. In their latter weanling months/short yearling they are more formally introduced to plastic bit and grooming tools such as brushes, mane combs and hoof picks. Bits are connected to their halters while they are being groomed in their stalls for a smooth transition for when we start prep.
Usually sometime shortly after the derby, the yearlings are broke to a surcingle with side reins (tack) and prep begins. At Lane’s End we prep yearlings to be racehorses. The yearlings start staying up in the barns all day instead of going out in the afternoon to protect their coats from sunburn. We hand walk the yearlings in a 40 acre field as a training tool as well as trot them in a covered round pen for fitness. Both of these are important part of the prep process. We use the surcingle and side reins for both walking in the fields and trotting in the round pens to ensure proper movement.
More aggressive grooming methods are used during prep where they are introduced to a curry comb for shedding, rub rags to bring out the natural oils in there coats and a hose/bath. We do not ride the yearlings during this process—yearlings are broke to riders after they leave the farm in the fall. Most of the yearlings at the farm are sent to either Florida or South Carolina in September/October and the training process starts over with the next crop of weanlings.

Q:
Does your farm try to keep the same “social companions” throughout their years as part of the broodmare bands, or does this change often?
Carolyn Caswell-Brown
Alexander, ND
A:When broodmares have become good friends we do try and keep them together as long as their status allows us to. A happy mare is typically a healthy mare. However if a mare is given a year off from foaling and her friends are in foal then she will have to join a group of non pregnant or “barren” mares for the health of the herd, as her routine and feeding will differ from that of the pregnant mares.
When mares move away from their friends they adjust quite quickly to a new group and within a day or two have usually bonded with the new group. They are a social animal and need the company of the others in the herd.

Candy Feat Beats the Odds
Teresa Gennaro Brooklyn Backstretch Oct. 11, 2012
Three AJ Suited and two 90 North horses were shipping from Palm Meadows to Fair Hill; Nicholson had just purchased a barn there, and Toner would be splitting his time between Maryland and his Belmont park base. But in South Carolina, the van driver had swerved to avoid a car that had cut him off, and the horse trailer veered off the road and overturned.
Emergency personnel worked to cut the roof off the van, eventually freeing all six horses, Nicholson’s five and another, Orange County, owned by Anne Paulson and trained by Barclay Tagg. Orange County had to be euthanized as a result of his injuries. Empiricist, a full brother to 2009 G1 Personal Ensign winner Icon Project, was fine at first, but after colicking, he was brought to New Bolton, where an untreatable intestinal injury, caused by the accident, was discovered. He, too, was euthanized.
The other four horses were fine, aside from some abrasions and cuts. Much Rejoicing was the most seriously injured of the survivors, with what Nicholson described as “major open wounds” on her legs; he gives full credit to the facilities and staff at Fair Hill for her recovery, and she’s expected to run in a few weeks.
Which leaves Candy Feat.
“He was one of the luckier ones,” acknowledged Nicholson. At least physically: the accident took a mental toll on him, too, and Nicholson described the ride to the track for his first race after the accident as “eventful.” Some horses need to be gate-schooled; Candy Feat needed to be van-schooled.
Unraced at the time of the accident, Candy Feat (Hard Spun-Pedicure, by Mr. Prospector) was third in his first two starts, one at Delaware, one at Saratoga. He was seventh next out at Saratoga, and on September 27, he made his first trip to Belmont Park. Sent off at 9-1, he won by a half-length, chasing down the leader in the stretch
Candy Feat will be in action again this Friday, in the eighth race; he’s 6-1 on the morning line. Nicholson won’t be at Belmont to see it; he’ll be on a plane to Chicago, to watch AJ Suited’s Two Months Rent run in the Hawthorne Derby on Saturday.

Dear Keta,
What a hear warming story. When transporting horses it is very dangerous.
Our trainer was moving horses to another part of town when a hurricane
was coming in, it is soooo hot in the trailer that she had to drive off the road
to speed the trip up otherwise they may have suffocated.
Sooo glad a few made it out and one is on his winning ways.

Keta; What a tragedy!!! My heart is so saddened. I extend my sympathies to the owners and those who worked with them.
Thanks Keta, hugs, Sally B.

It shows tragedy can strike anywhere and anytime. Glad Candy Feat was able to come back and win. It hurts to hear when horses suffer injuries especially in an accident like this.
Remember when I was in my earlier teens and we lived near a track that raced trotters and one got loose, jumped a barrier, found his way onto the highway and was cut in two by a tractor trailer.
Thanks Keta for the post.

British Star Camelot Being Treated for Colic
By Blood-Horse Staff Updated: Thursday, October 11, 2012 3:54 PM
Three-time British classic winner Camelot, most recently seventh in the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Fr-I), is being treated for colic, according to a Twitter post from Coolmore Stud.
The posting said the Two Thousand Guineas (Eng-I) and Investec English Derby (Eng-I) winner trained by Aidan O’Brien had undergone exploratory surgery late Oct. 11, and that more information would be released Oct. 12.
“Triple Classic winner Camelot was admitted to Fethard Veterinary Hospital this evening and underwent exploratory colic surgery,” the Tweet said. “Obviously it’s still very early days but a further bulletin will be released in the morning.”
Camelot, a son of Montjeu who was upset in his bid to sweep the English Triple Crown in the Ladbrokes St. Leger (Eng-I) in September, was never a factor in the Oct. 7 Arc at Lonchamp in France.

Sheena. It’s a shock to hear that Camelot has undergone surgery. As Sign said above, Camelot worked hard during the Triple Crown campaign this year. Sally B. (cherish Z- Wi.)
Hi all; It is Weds. evening. I am so happily impressed that you all keep corresponding must interesting horse subjects. Such as, Judy Berube, you have to tell more of the training of this lovely horse and many more!!
At the Cedar Valley Horse Sanctuary we suddenly were in a deliema, we had lost our source for all the winter hay!! As you may know, Wisconsin, especially our Southmost area had severe drought conditions. We found a source further up but it fell through.
We did finally find some, not average bales, but good grassy bales that were 3’x3′ x 8′.
Let’s just say they will be BIG flakes! Unfortunately, the price when there is supply and demand went up a dollar from what we thought. If any one of you Zesters would care to donate pleae express this and I will provide the name and address. They are legally a tax deductable charity.
Fancy and Frito have begun their winter coat; so soft and cuddly, I know where I will tuck my fingers to keep them warm!! Sir and Jo have that smoother close to the skin kind of coat so they will not get much. I just see a little, sort of like when you have not shaved your legs or guys, your face. ha ha
Jo, the shorter Hakney ponie always chases away our Big Sir, the handsome 16.1 or 2 . Sir came three weeks later than Jo. I am learning so much. I can not believe that this awesome big horse allows Jo to dictate. I did see one sign I think last week, when Sir kicked his hind legs as perhaps he has decided, “Hey, I have been here a while now, you better start respecting me too, and letting me eat!!” Sir does need to still add weight before our long winter. Those who had or have horses what do you think? I would love to hear about this.
I do not want to give anyone the wrong impression; these are generally very good natured gentle horses, even though one went for my thumb thinking it was a small carrot! ha ha I was aware!!
hugs to all of you, Sally

Dear Sally:
Love your update on all the Sweeties at the rescue. God Bless you for all you do for them. They all have their individual personalities and they make their feelings known.
Well, it’s official. Papa Charlie is spoiled. Yesterday, he threw a shoe in the mud and instead of having breakfast this morning and heading out to the paddock with his friends, he had to stay in his stall and wait for the farrier. Angela said he was sulking all morning. When I got there this afternoon, the farrier had replaced the shoe and Angela had his blanket on him and was walking him over to the paddock gate to set him free with his friends. He saw me approaching and was very alert so I knew he recognized me. I offered him carrots and peppermints, but he had no interest in anything except getting his halter off and running to meet his buds. He did allow me to pet him and talk to him.
I told Angela I would come back on Saturday and try to get a video of her riding him. As I was driving away, I looked over at Papa in the paddock and he was rolling back and forth in the grass. He got up and his blanket was down around his middle and hanging over his rear. He has very long legs and it looked like he was wearing trousers. I was not close enough to get a photo. I could not stop laughing. I parked the car and went into the barn to tell Angela what had happened. She ran out to the paddock laughing and PC greeted her like “what’s up”. She removed the “blanket trousers” and waved to me and I left. Papa Charlie is so much fun. Angela calls him “A Big Ham”. Hugs, JB

White Bliss, or the 1-in-200,000 colt
By Barbara Livingston DRF 10/09/2012 10:14PM
You know how it is with Standardbreds. Most are bay, with an occasional chestnut or grey tossed in for variety. Some have a star here or a sock there – but ‘bling,’ of any sort, is mighty rare indeed.
And so Fair Winds Farm night watchman Dan Conger must have been dumbfounded watching Coochie Mama deliver her foal the night of May 6.
“Our night watchman pulled the foal out,” said farm owner Mark Mullen. “Sometimes there’ll be a little white, a little something, like a sock. But the sock became a stocking, and then it was the neck, and the shoulder. The white just kept coming.
“Our watchman is a man of few words, but he was beside himself that night.”
Farm manager Matt Gartland got a call from Conger around midnight. He braced himself.
“Usually if I get a phone call at midnight, it’s an emergency,” Gartland said. “I asked him what the emergency was and he said, nothing, but they just had the foal – but, he’s white.”
What? Coochie Mama, a long-faced, minimally marked bay, had produced a white-as-the-driven-snow white colt by the major sire Art Major? Art Major’s color…you guessed it: he’s a handsome, ‘plain brown wrapper’ bay.

Anybody know what Terry C. is up to? I haven’t seen him here since the 5th. In his honor, here is another Redneck joke, they are certainly not tender-hearted stories:
A guy was on trial for murder and if convicted, would get the electric chair. His brother found out that a redneck was on the jury and figured he would be the one to bribe. He told the redneck that he would be paid $10,000 if he could convince the rest of the jury to reduce the charge to manslaughter.
The jury was out an entire week and returned with a verdict of manslaughter.
After the trial, the brother went to the redneck’s home, told him what a great job he had done and paid him the $10,000.
The redneck replied that it wasn’t easy to convince the rest of the jury to change the charge to manslaughter. They all wanted to let him go.

Max what do you think about Solemia going to Japan Cup instead of BC
Sheena I left you a message on former page. you too Sign.
Max
Peggy. I read that the turf at Santa Anita might not be good for Solemia and that could be a reason to go to Japan instead. If she goes to Japan, our favorite chestnut will be ready for that race.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Yes, I know absolutely that he will. Would sure like to hear some more news on him.
Max
Peggy. I think that it will be quiet until Orfevre clears quarantine. I’m not certain how long that will be as the regulations on quarantine vary from country to country. In the lead up to the Japan Cup on November 25, there is likely to be lots of news about him

Some of you may have heard the basis for this one in today’s news: You might be a redneck if you burn the house down trying to cook a squirrel with a blow torch.

Dear all, it’s a little confusing, but we have two Heidi K’s who post here. Today is the birthday of Heidi Kreizinger in Seattle, who posted two days ago about a special wish: https://staging.zenyatta.com/experts/ask-the-experts-14/comment-page-1#comment-181398
A Birthday Poem for Heidi Kreizinger in Seattle
(October 12, 2012)
Heidi’s an expert on racing history–
She even a jockey wanted to be,
Much like her namesake in Californi’,
The other dear Heidi
Whom you all know,
Heidi Kruckenberg—
The one from Vallejo—
Who, as we’ve heard,
Was for many a year
A professional rider.
I fear
For Heidi in Seattle
That dream didn’t come true,
For she had no one to guide her
And knew not what to do.
But still I would imagine
She did early on begin
Horses to ride
And loved to be astride,
Spending hours in the saddle,
For, as she to us did confide,
Horses have from the start
Formed a treasured part
Of her life
And hold a big place in her heart.
Could she additionally be,
Like the other,
An equine midwife
Who has assisted many a mare
As each became a mother?
For sure, she does deeply for horses care!
She wondered if the Lane’s End staff
Could get for her a celebrity autograph,
That is to say
A royal hoof print
From Zenyatta or the Prince
To help her celebrate this day
In a most special way.
Well, even if those horses say “neigh”
And just continue to graze away
Or engage in frolicsome play,
We hope that you, dear Heidi, will have a marvelous day!
Happy birthday, Heidi Kreizinger, and many, many happy returns!
Barbara Wood (Texas)
Happy Birthday, Heidi, and again, thank you Trina. What a wealth of information some of our Dumplings have about horses. Thanks to all of you for sharing with dummies like me! Hugs.

Happy Birthday Heidi K from Seatle.
Trina: Wonderful poem. Love learning so much about fellow dumplings through your poems.
HeidiK (Vallejo, Ca) aka DinkyDiva
Trina.. This is confusing. When I first read the Bday poem, I thought, it’s not my BDay until mid Nov.. I read it again and realized that it’s the other Heidi K in Seattle. LOL… Hmmm, maybe one of us should change our names up a lil more so that it doesn’t get so confusing? Especially if the New Heidi K will be posting often. I can always go with my moniker, DinkyDiva. That might be more confusing though. We’ll see. Any suggestions? HeidiK 1 and HeidiK 2?
HeidiK in Seattle….. Is your last name German too? Now, that would be interesting!
None the Less, Happy Birthday to you, Heidi!

dear sig thanks very much for thelink about camelot I wonder if they will stick to their decision to keep him in training depends how he recovers I suppose even the mighty nijinsky never won another race after the leger it’ a lot to ask of ayoung horse to race the 3 distances and especially out in the US where the races are so close at least we have a 5 month gap I could see there is talk of keiron fallon retiring he.s been in trouble with the authorities a lot not one of my favourite jockeys I was wondering how terry crow is hope he’ s ok he has’nt posted much lately I was sorry to hear about judy’s friend with lung cancer very sad will pray for her and her family my dad died with heart problems then prostate cancer went all through him it’ a horrible disease hugs sheenaX
