Q:
When a racing thorougbred is retired from the track with the intention of being bred, do they generally settle down quickly from all the excitement of the track or does it take a while depending on the horse’s personality? Also, shortly after Silver Charm was retired to stand at stud, I watched a brief special on TV that said that he continued to be ridden and that he enjoyed being ridden. How common is it that thoroughbreds are still ridden after they are retired and are on a breeding farm? Just curious! Thanks for all you guys do!!

A:
Racehorses typically settle into retirement quite quickly. You have to remember we are actually putting them back in to a more natural environment to the one they have been living in at the track. However we don’t just bring them to the farm and put them out in the herd in a big field. The process is gradual and each horse dictates how long it takes depending on their behavior and also the time of year and weather conditions. We will turn them out in a small paddock daily and bring them in every evening. Typically with the fillies we then introduce them to a friend or two before they are eventually put in a larger field with a bigger group.
We do not ride any of our horses here at Lane’s End but it is not entirely uncommon to hear of Stallions being ridden after they are retired. At Three Chimneys Farm they do ride the stallions hence the piece on Silver Charm that you saw. We use a horse walker for the stallions that need additional exercise to help keep them trim.

Peggy. Orfevre is a handsome horse with lots of talent. That chesnut coat is impressive. His quirky personality also makes him interesting. Looking forward to seeing him in the Japan Cup.
Keta: Any news of his travels back to Japan?

Max, me too. Looking so forward to that race.
Let’s see Japan’s about l3 hours ahead of us. I think. Maybe he’s getting back home by now. Sure hope he traveled well.

Hey Judy,
Yes, What a legacy
I went in and checked on Gabby tonight. Didn’t see any more works yet. Could be any day, though
You know I always was so sad that Sunday Silence was sent so far away, But in hind sight, There wouldn’t have been an Orfevre if he hadn’t
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Peggy:
I agree with you, but I always wish they could stay in the States. I even worry about Bernie every year when he goes to Australia.
Sunday Silence is similar to I’ll Have Another as he won both the Derby and the Preakness and ended up at stud in Japan too.
Yes, I checked on Gabby too. Will probably have a work the middle of October. Hugs, JB
Kathy R.
Dear Judy: Please don’t worry about Bernie – we just love him down here, and he is really, really popular at the stallion parades. The Darley team are a really good bunch – so don’t worry – he’s loved here too!
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Kathy:
I’m sure Bernie is well loved and cared for really well while he’s in Australia. It’s just me. He’s my most favorite Boy, along with Papa Charlie and The Prince. I worry about all of them. Thank you for being so sweet and for all the wonderful and informative posts. Hugs, JB

Dear Kathy,
Sooo good to hear that you love Bernie as much as we do and glad to hear he is popular down under, too. What type of parades does he paricipate in.
Maybe So You Think will come to the US to breed, that would be wonderful.
We would have a bunch of TB with that sexy forelock and that would be something to see.
So glad you are watching over our “guys”.
Kathy R.
Sign: All the horse studs have a stallion parade before the start of each breeding season – gives them all a chance to show off the new boys in town, and also how well the regulars are going.

For those who loved the Budweiser commercials with their famous Clydesdales. this is 9 minutes of fun to watch the training over 15 years. My fondest memory is seeing these gentle giants and having one wink at me just like he did in a commercial. Hope this post shows up.

dear sign and kathy they changed the whips over in the UK for the jump jockeys a few years ago it’ a more softer type of whip now not that it makes much difference to me hate to see horses hit too much !!!hugs sheenaX
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Sheena and Z Fans:
Something else we agree on. Hate seeing whips used excessively. Hugs,JB
signofthetimes; President of Texas RN Chapter
Dear Sheena and Z fans,
Interesting that they changed the jumps first then the flat.
Whips are a necessity as the jockey does not have a leg
or seat as an aid to move the horse forward.
But should not be used excessively or when the horse is
not responding to it.
Max
A voice of those in the UK who oppose any whipping of horses.
Northern Dancer’s owner instructed his jockeys never to use the whip on the Dancer. ND’s mother, Natalma, a daughter of Native Dancer, when whipped just went on strike and refused to run.

Peggy (N). Northern Dancer has something in common with you and your Orfevre. He’s a May baby. His birthday is May 27, 1961. When he won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, he had not yet reached his third birthday.

Oh my look at our gorgeous Zenyatta. You are still breath taking oh gorgeous one. Would love to hear some news from you. Did you get to see the unvieling of your stature? It is beautiful, and the artist did a wonderful job, however nothing could ever compare to you in any way. You take my breath away. Take care and sending smooches to that sweet soft nose. Love, love, love you.
Did you know that Karen Gogue took all the pictures and letters from your fans that we sent to Karen and made a scrap book for Dottie for her years of speaking Zenyatta and keeping us informed . That was such a nice thing for her to undertake. See we all love you so much, as well as your connections and how much you and they have done for the TB and racing.

Santa Anita: Gervinho earns shot at Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf
By Steve Andersen DRF
ARCADIA, Calif. – Gervinho is bound for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf on Nov. 3 after winning the Zuma Beach Stakes at Santa Anita on Monday.
His stablemate Winding Way, a stakes-winning female sprinter at Del Mar, will pass the Breeders’ Cup after her first loss Sunday.
That was the approach trainer Carla Gaines envisioned Monday for early November.
Gervinho, ridden by Rafael Bejarano, overcame losing his footing on the turn to close furiously through the stretch and win the one-mile Zuma Beach in his first start on turf and first start longer than 5 1/2 furlongs.
Part of article about Winding Way
Winding Way will not start in the BC Filly and Mare Sprint after her disappointing performance as the 3-10 favorite in the L.A. Woman Stakes. Ridden by Bejarano, Winding Way was last throughout and was never a factor in the stretch. It was her first loss in four starts.
Gaines said that Winding Way may not start on a dirt track in future races.
“I’m not running in the Breeders’ Cup,” she said.
Instead, Winding Way may start on a synthetic track or turf, she said.

The Racy In Lingerie Pays Off For Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners
Teresa Genaro Sports Money Forbes Oct. 10
Two years ago, a yearling bay filly went through the sales ring at Keeneland. Her sire, Empire Maker, won the Florida Derby, Wood Memorial, and Belmont Stakes, and he finished second in the Kentucky Derby. Still, no one was much interested in the filly; bidding reached $22,000, less than her reserve, and she left the ring unsold.
Last weekend, she returned to the site of her ignominious beginning and emerged a star.
On Sunday at Keeneland Race Course, In Lingerie won the Grade 1 Spinster Stakes, one of the country’s most prestigious races for fillies and mares. It was her third graded stakes victory, her fourth victory in seven races; she’s the kind of filly that Thoroughbred owners dream about.
