Q:
If a mare, for whatever reason, misses a “date” with a stallion, is it difficult to make up? Does one person juggle the breeding schedules for all the stallions and mares?
Barbara Wood
Waco, TX
A: Here at Lanes End we rarely miss a mare’s heat cycle due to the stallion being too busy. We work very hard to communicate with the mare’s boarding farm and do our best to accommodate each mare on the day that is requested. If it does occur we try to give the mare that we missed preferential treatment next time she comes into heat and is “back on the books”.
We have two people here at Lane’s End Farm that juggle the bookings. The stallions are divided between us at the beginning of the year, since we have a large number of them. We each book half the stallions for the season. We also have another employee who handles the bookings for the mares that reside at Lane’s End that are bred to stallions on outside farms.

Stallion Booking Secretary, Lane’s End
Daniele has been working at Lane’s End Farm for eight years. She graduated from the University of Kentucky with a degree in Communications. She has held many positions within the thoroughbred Industry including working for a veterinarian and managing her own thoroughbred breeding operation.

So true Tony! Had I not grown to love her so while she was racing, I wouldn’t be here today! I still love re-watching her races (especially 2009 classic) and still tear up and get chills!!

I do not know how to copy my story of working at the Horse Sanctory as was suggested, my latest update. If your interested, could you click back to Ask the Experts 11?
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Here it is Sally:
Hi all; I have a few more minutes to share with you about the Cedar Valley Horse Sanctuary I have been volunteering for. We accepted a “big” horse recently named Sir. He stands 16.2 hands and at the age of 22 he is still very beautiful with his chestnut coat and perfect white blaze. He was rescued after being abandoned in a farm field. Sir was skin and bones. The person treated him kindly, feeding and taking care of his other needs but could not keep him. She called the Sanctuary, after checking him out as to compatibility, he was accepted with open arms. Right now we continue to attempt to fatten him up with good extra senior feed and soaked beet pulp, plus of course hay and the pasture. We have been given him MSM as well for his joints. He initiated me over a week ago when he planted his big head into my back keeping it pressed so he could begin rubbing his head. WOW!! The power just from the neck & head is amazing!! Of course NO! NO! Sir was used in my speech. I eventually went to my chiropractor because whenever I did some physical work, my back seemed to go into a spasm. I had a slight twist of my spine. Oh, for the love of horses (for the love of Zenyatta). I am hoping I won’t be a green horn too much longer!! ha ha When I go there and am with them, there is nothing else I think of; no worries, no problems. They get to live out the rest of their lives with kindness and love; but they give back. I’ll be able to take care of Zenyatta pretty soon if they ever need some one!!! Now that would be a dream come true!
I have not been able to read much here, I know I am missing a lot. November is getting closer and closer!!! BC and Zenyatta’s party you lucky ones!! You must be feeling the excitement already. It seems a number of TB’s are retiring this year for sure. I still would like to get to Kentucky especially since the BC is not in the cards for me.
Blessings to you all. hugs, Sally B

Hi Z-Peeps:
Looks like our team did very well this week! Lots of different combo’s from reading the various posts! Nice Capping or listening to you “gut”!
@JudyB: Thanks so much for the kind thoughts and hugs!
@Keta: I appreciate ALL the wonderful and uplifting updates on our boy Paynter.
@Sign: I understand how you feel about the IHA connections and your feelings, I feel that way about certain trainers, jockey’s and owner’s, therefore I won’t bet on their horses. I would rather put my money down on a horse with good, solid, honest, and kind intentions and loose then on a team I don’t trust or believe in.
@Terry C: Welcome back! You must be in heaven with those two beautiful angels taking such good care of you!
Now to my beloved 4 legged friends: Gus, Bing, Traveller, and Money, Get better soon, take your meds, let your owners, caregivers, and vets help you heal you. Sending you all treats, sweet kisses, and lots of prayers.
I had a horse I was taking care of that wouldn’t eat if I put bute in his food! I tried EVERYTHING, AND I MEAN EVERYTHING, treats, tricks, nothing worked, he needed his bute so bad and I was out of ideas until I thought maybe putting it in a sweet drink? I checked with the vet and she said, “try it, it can’t hurt at this point”. So I did, I got a fruit punch type drink and mixed the bute in that and don’t you know the stinker drank it! Another thought I had was if you diluted the bute with a little water and then injected with a small needle into his or her favorite treat, i.e. watermelon! Hope my crazy tricks help, just a few thoughts!
Nice pic of “Our Queen” with her new BFF! Loved the question Barbara and the explanation!
@Pati: Most important thing to remember when your at the track……..COMFORT! I am sure you will look great whatever you choose! Too bad you didn’t come to Saratoga this year, I bet you could have had your pic taken with one of those race horses!
Wishing you ALL good health, happiness, and lots of love!

I hope so! We are meeting the Mosses, so I want to look nice!
I have to figure out how to control my hair too, as I don’t want it to think that it can just go crazy on me. My hair has a mind of it’s own in every strand sometimes.
The foundation got the hair I sent as a donation, and I got a certificate! I am looking for a nice frame to hang it in right now. I will post a picture of it on my wall, and a picture of where my Sammy is on my wall too.
I am running out of room on my walls, so I might have to put the frame on my ceiling.

To All,
Lane’s End announced in Facebook that The Factor is coming to the farm to stand at stud. His fees will be $15,000.
I was cheering for My Miss Aurelia in the Cotillion. What an exciting race. Those Stonestreet fillies are just racing up a storm this year. I had noticed that Stonestreet had purchased quite a few yearings at the Keeneland sale. Seems they’re looking toward the future, as well.
On Friday I entered the poll on the Paulick report for the Pa. Derby and I chose Handsome Mike to win. My heart was really with Alpha, though. I wonder if shipping in so close to the race plays a part in how they do. Questing also shipped in this morning, but she seemed to be in good race spirits.
Pati- Deciding her outfit for Breeders' Cup!
I was so excited for MMA! The horse and the namesake are both tough and classy ladies!

Marty R,
Kiran said he was concerned about shipping Alpha.
He does not ship well and was upset in the gate and broke

Well for Ramon.

Issues. Just too much weight, 7 more lbs than
MMA. They will be evenly matched in Ladies Classic
So will be a better race.

All we know right now is that she is very flexible, and runs fast. She also likes getting her ears scratched, and she tries to eat her momma out of house and home. She also is a little bully to Bing and Gus; both of which chase her down until their ole’ man legs get tired.
Well now that Gus has that fancy contraption in his thigh and stitches to boot, he’ll be in his stall until Tuesday at least.
Poor old mama Lucy has some infection. Someone went out and found her lying down in her field. She had a clear fluid running out of her nose and mouth , and her eyes were puffed up and watering terribley. She wouldn’t get up for even her food. I hate to say this, but her time might be coming if she starts refusing to eat. Poor mama, the last few years of her life have absolutely sucked.
SHERR has spent almost $1200 dollars with vet visits and buying anti-biotics; so if you guys wouldn’t mind too much, and you can afford it of course, SHERR is asking for some assistance in paying off the vet bills. Ginny wouldn’t ask if it was money they had.
Rio almost choked to death on his food a few days ago. Luckily, Ginny and her golden touch saved his life.

Dear Judy B and Sue,
Not sure why they shipped Alpha the day of race,
Unless they would have had to leave him there a week to

Manager, the Shieks buddy, made the decision.
Not sure they will do that again.
