Q:
If a mare, for whatever reason, misses a “date” with a stallion, is it difficult to make up? Does one person juggle the breeding schedules for all the stallions and mares?
Barbara Wood
Waco, TX
A: Here at Lanes End we rarely miss a mare’s heat cycle due to the stallion being too busy. We work very hard to communicate with the mare’s boarding farm and do our best to accommodate each mare on the day that is requested. If it does occur we try to give the mare that we missed preferential treatment next time she comes into heat and is “back on the books”.
We have two people here at Lane’s End Farm that juggle the bookings. The stallions are divided between us at the beginning of the year, since we have a large number of them. We each book half the stallions for the season. We also have another employee who handles the bookings for the mares that reside at Lane’s End that are bred to stallions on outside farms.

Thank you for sharing not only the beautiful, serene photo of Zenyatta, but giving such an interesting answer to the ask the experts question. It is so much fun to be learning from y’all so many details of the lives of the horses we love! I can only imagine how hectic it must get during the height of the breeding season with so many stallions to take care of – a real balancing act to time the mare’s cycle with the availability of the stallions! Since Lane’s End has so many stallions it is no wonder it takes several people to handle the scheduling. Thank you again for sharing the information. Lane’s End and Team Z are the absolute best!

Dear Daniele and Lanes End,
Thanks so much for the updates on Zenny and her new bay friend.
Her friend is more interested in the camera than Zenny. Of, course,
if you missed crucial breeding times for mares, owners etc… would
not be happy. Lanes End is soooo very organized,
Thanks for the information.

Sheena, Sign, Max, and Ann — you are all so welcome. Every few months i have to read that story about Kincsem again, it is so heart-warming. For some reason, it reminds me very much of Zenyatta, or the way i feel about her.

Congratulations Barbara Wood, for your great question and getting your question chosen!! I was so tickled to your name.
Thank you Danielle and all of Lanes End for all this informative information.
Our beautiful Zenyatta looks wonderful and oh so happy and content. It takes away from the missing of her so much, knowing she is so happy.
Finally for now, Power Up: Paynter, Money and Traveller!!
Love to all.
Barbara Wood (Texas)
Thank you, Darlene. We’re still not out of the woods with Money. Things crop up that send us into a panic, but at least he is eating well and able to walk on it. Swelling down considerably, though still puffy.
Max
Barbara. Good to hear that Money is improving. Keep us posted. We have not forgotten that he needs prayers. Traveller too. And Paynter.

Yes indeed.
It is the triple Power Up.

Paynter Update Friday Sept. 21 11:00 AM Pacific A. Zayat tweets combined
Paynter update: NEWS FLASH.. OMG OMG OMG thank you lord power of prayers. Our warrior had Dr. Brian Fraley flown in from KY to visit him and wow yes he has beaten Laminitis. And yes he can race again. Here are the details..
Paynter’s casts were removed today. He is showing uniform wall growth in all four feet. Radiographs taken barefoot showed significant sole growth. The hoof-lamellar zone has returned to a normal thickness indicating a decrease in swelling within the hoof.Soft-ride boots with EVA foam pads were placed on the front feet and EVA foam pads were placed on the hind feet
He is sound at the walk Drs. Javsicas & Fraley are optimistic that his feet will not be performance limiting Meaning that he can race again at a top-notch level.
Now that our warrior have beaten this sick disease of laminitis if he can only beat his colitis and get his G1 track back to normal.Healing will take some time but we are heading in the right direction His fever is normal today.
He is bright, happy and comfortable.
I am on cloud nine, I will take it day by day
We can’t claim victory yet but the people’s horse is fighting hard and he is so courageous. #Champion #keepfightingpaynter #poweruppaynter
