Q:
A while back you had a great informational piece about hoof management for Baby Z. I was wondering what you do to take care of his teeth? Do horses have baby teeth they lose to make room for permanent teeth like humans?
Vicki Vinson
Apple Valley, CA
A: The oral cavity of a young growing horse is undergoing constant change. Unlike humans, horses have hypsodont teeth that are constantly erupting. From the time a foal is born to the time the horse is an adult, the number of teeth increases from 0-6 as a foal to 36-44 as a full mouthed adult. The average horse has a full mouth of 36-44 teeth (4 rows of 11) by the age of 4 years. During the first four years, it is important to routinely evaluate the oral cavity for congenital (born with) and developmental (acquired) disorders. If congenital and developmental disorders are not identified and addressed early, they may lead to more severe disorders.
A newborn foal is born with few teeth. The first incisors may be present at birth or can be just below the gingival surface. The first incisors typically erupt through the gingiva around 6-8 days of life. All of the incisors should be present by 6-9 months of age. The same is true for the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th pre-molars. They may be present at birth but they are generally exposed by two weeks of age. Three permanent molars erupt caudal (behind) to the premolars at 1, 2 & 3.5-4 years respectively.
As Baby Z grows up his teeth will be examined periodically to insure that they are erupting in the proper place, size and number. All foals at Lane’s End are examined at birth for any oral abnormalities. Foals are monitored daily for any illnesses or injuries and that includes the oral cavity. As Baby Z becomes a yearling he will have an oral exam performed twice a year to monitor normal tooth wear and eruption. If necessary, sharp enamel points that form on the outside of the upper tooth arcades and the inside of the lower tooth arcades will be reduced. This is most commonly known as “teeth floating.” Baby Z may also have his wolf-teeth or first pre-molars removed before he enters light breaking and training. Wolf-teeth may cause him discomfort when a bit is placed in his mouth and that could interfere with his training.
Routine oral care is a critical part of any annual wellness program. With oral exams once to twice a year, Baby Z will be sure to have a beautiful set of pearly whites to smile with in the winners circle!

@Sue Noel–thanks for the good wishes, and prayers for Traveller. Everyone knows that was they name of Rober E. Lee’s beloved grey, right?
Barnaby is a character. Their personalities are amazing. Each and every one has something wonderful to offer. Sometimes it’s just hidden inside from being hurt.
Sue Noel/Sun Valley,ID
Good grief!! I did it again–meant today!!
@ Max–Trouble is,the treats are in the refrig in the tack room,so they stay fresh. Guess maybe I should keep a few at home and just take them when I go down. He really IS SO funny!! He has got so much self-confidence now—I really love it that he is so secure and sure of his place in the world–and so secure in my love for him that he knows I will take care of his wants and needs. I don’t think he worries about anything now!

Sue. It is really a pleasure to hear these stories. I like others look forward to your visits with Barnaby. He’s a very sweet horse with good taste in treats. Fuji apples are great. Glad for you that this has worked out so well. Let us know when you can how Traveller is doing. I hope that it is nothing serious and passes quickly.

Thanks as always, Sue, for another Barnaby story. So nice to know that he is feeling more “at home” every day. We always look forward to additional chapters in his remarkable life. Keep us posted on Traveller too!

To all my friends on the blog-I am presently between domiciles but I am being well cared for by our resident poetess, Trina Nagele. I am staying in a guest room at her place at the present while more permanent headquarters are being readied. I wish to publicly thank Trina and Diana Stuart for helping me in a most desperate and unhappy time. Without them, I would truly have been lost. I am still somewhat down, but things are getting better. THanks to all who have expressed their concern. All kind words are appreciated and a big God bless you for all those who are hurting. Here are a few redneck jokes while I ponder the rest of my life. You might be a redneck if you have ever replaced a belt with a dog collar. You might be a rednek if you think a chain saw is a musical instrument. You might be aredneck if your car alarm eats dog food. You might be a redneck if you have ever used the limbo to get into a pay toilet. I’ll be back when I can.

@Terry Crow, GP– WELCOME back! I KNEW Trina and Diastu were up to something! We have missed you terribly.
If anyone has news of Susan Carothers, or Dawn Conrad, please pass it on.
Now for the Money report–we were distressed when we first went out this evening because he looked really sad and had not eaten his grain with the antibiotic. We got him out of the stall, and although the scrapes are oozing a LOT, he is walking better and standing on it. He has a little limp, but not the hop he had yesterday. You would faint if you could see the swelling. We gave him the treatments (pressure wash, DMSO, Banamine) and hand-fed him the grain Then she took him out to eat grass, which he did with more gusto and nosed the barn kitty, His run is open so he can go out if he wants, but it’s a pretty high step, and he didn’t do that. Sherry Beth took lots of photos on her phone to send Dr. Kelly for comparison and will e-mail them tonight and call her in the morning. Will know more then.
Thanks to all of you for your prayers and your love. We love you all.
P.S. He did spy some treats and managed to knock over a broom, reaching for the sack….
Thank you, Trina and Diastu, for helping our Terry. Terry, you were surrounded by angels, and we would all have been there if we could have been!

Paynter Update Tues. Sept. 18 5:30 PM Pacific A. Zayat tweets combined
I am happy finally to go to my full and regular update on our beloved Paynter. I need to apologize for the last couple of days have been traveling, had a house full of family. I have asked @LJavsicasVMD our angel to kindly update his fans the last two days you can continue to follow her at that address.
Back to Paynter, His feet are very comfortable and perfect. we see no issue there for a full recovery from his mild laminitis since again he has shown zero separation, rotation or sinking. We are scheduling to fly in his vets/ farrier Dr. Bryan Farley on friday to remove his three casts and to examine his feet. fingers crossed. We are hoping for a happy update so please continue your prayers and good wishes.
Not only Paynter is responding but his caretakers led by Dr. Laura and his group of renound vets are being very encouraged by your support. let alone myself and my family.
Regarding his other issues mainly colitis, he is still fighting that evil disease very hard. He does have his moments with his battles. His last 3 days have been very tough on him while his blood works looks healthy and perfect and his lungs and other organs look healthy. His appetite fluctuates day to day. his attitude has been happier and brighter. the only major issue that is giving me sleepless nights is his fever. He has been spiking fevers since saturday while it is up and down it has been well above normal. It seems to us that while his colon is healing it will take sometime. but it is very evident that he still has a very severe case of inflammation of his GI track and some thickening on the ultra sound which is not good we believe he has beaten the odds so far and he been fighting so couragerously and this colt really wants to live and fight we have been giving him all chances on doing so.
Neither I or Laura or our families want to give up. But he really needs to get better and we need to help him get his fever back to normal like last week.
So we decided after consulting with world experts in that disease and internal medicine specialists that we now need to be more aggressive and go ALL WAR on these bacterial infections that he has in his gut and colon and to help combat it by using new and different combinations of more than one antibiotic. Of course the decision was not an easy one because we want to be merciful to his sensitive stomach and colon as well as we didn’t want to start the onsite of another episode of diherria.
I have given my full support and approval to our vets to start this new remedy yesterday. We been praying very hard that it will be the la st major attempt to help him fight this vicious battle with his colitis the imflammation. They have decided not to use an oral antibiotics but to have it administrated trough a catheder with a strong mix of more than one medicine. We are very hopeful that God willing he will respond.
Some positive signs to report since yesterday his fever been back to normal for the first time since friday. His manure has been ok. No diherria. Which tells us that he is showing signs of response to the changes in his meds. so thats all for now.
We will continue praying the next 2-3 days are pretty vital in his recovery. If we are able to get those improvements we can start breathing a sigh of relief that this warrior have WON two major battles. #keepfightingpaynter #warrior #star

Hi Judy B. Hope all is well w/ you.
What’s this about a horse named Charlie?
Hugs coming your way!
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Ann:
Have been following Papa Charlie since I read the article about him linked below. Found his name through the Pedigree Query site and have been concerned about him since he did not place in three races in July. Then discovered he was up for sale as of 8/7/12 on the Canter For Sale by Trainer site. The trainer insisted on racing him three more times in August and September; he finished out of the money all three times. I have been talking to him about purchasing Papa since the beginning of September, but I could not convince him not to race him again. Last race was Monday past. He finished last. Papa is done with racing. He’s just not interested anymore. He has had 51 starts; 8 firsts, 6 seconds and 6 thirds ad has earned $90,214.00.
Our EAN group has so generously pledged to help him and now one of our ladies in the group is attempting to find him and possibly one other horse (a mare) a safe place. Hoping to get everything done by the weekend. Please say a prayer. Hugs, JB

Judy & Barbara,
The Paynter updates are difficult to interpert.
In reading them, you can feel the emotional ups-and-downs.
So, rather than doing a recap, I post what is written.
The way I see it is Paynter seems to be out of the woods with the laminitis.
But, the colitis is stll a problem especially with the flucutations in temperature.
So, it seems to be very hopeful. I try not to overreact to some of the negative words.
Hugs, Keta

Dear Judy B
Left you a message on former page, but was asking about Papa Charlie. Hope everything is good with him.
I find myself though, not thinking about too much else but Paynter right now. Just so worried about him.
I did hear a little bit about It’s Tricky running in the Beldame. Like her very much. Even though I know she can be a very naughty girl. It’s hard too think about anything other than our boy Paynter
I have been checking on Gabby and it doesn’t look like anything is going on with her right now. I hope no news is good news.
I get up pretty early going to work anyway but I’ve started checking the computer first thing, to see if there’s any Paynter news. I know probably want hear anything so early. But I’m praying so hard he gets well.
Seattle Slew Battled back. Paynter pray you can too.

Dear Peggy N.:
Will look for your post on the previous page. Papa ran yesterday in the 4th Race at Suffolk Downs. He ran last. I spoke with the trainer twice and he assured me PC came out of the race OK. Once we get a confirmation on the safe place and transport fee, I will be bringing him the cash to purchase Papa and another horse he asked us to take. She is a five year old mare, Hudson Township, who like Papa is no longer showing any interest in racing. Hopefully, everything will fall in place by the end of the week and the horses will be on their way to their safe place no later than next Monday.
I’m very concerned about Paynter too and our Barbara Wood’s horse Money, who is going through an injury to one of his legs. Praying for all of them; safe passage for PC and HT and full recovery for Paynter and Money.
I have been checking on Gabby too. She had a workout at Monmouth on 9/15/12. She was 6th fastest out of 50; 4 furlongs in a time of 48:40 Breezing (running easily without encouragement from the rider). I think she’s going to do real well in her next race. Wishing her safe and good racing luck. Love and Hugs, JB

Did John go see her and 12Z when he was in KY? I know he took pictures , when is he going to share? Seriously, it has been awhile, is she ok? Very anxiously awaiting any news from her.
In the meantime please give her lots of smooches on her sweet nose from me and all of her adoring fans.
Love hugs and kisses to all
Pati- gradually losing sleep over BC!!!!!
Boys at Tuscanova has been retired. He will be sold as a stud prospect but no word as of which sale yet.
Sad, I liked him so much going into his three year old year. Oh well, there goes another classy runner.

Dear Pati:
Hopes were so high for this beautiful boy. Hopefully, he is sound and will have a good long life. Hugs, JB

Thanks again to everyone praying for Money. After a mostly sleepless night, we found him out in his run talking with one of his buds. What a relief. I think it will just be a gradual healing ( I hope, anyway), and it will be hard to keep him up untilthe swelling goes down. The antibiotics take 10 days, so unless something happens, I won’t post daily. Just ask that you keep praying, as we are for TC.
Speaking of TC, is beyond great to have you back among us. I have a heads up for you if you can get to the library (where I go now for all my books since I had to enforce a “no more book buying” policy. Jeff Shaara’s new book on Shiloh is out, called A Blaze of Glory. It is very good, or would be if I had more time to read. You would like it, and I think it’son the bestsellers’ list.
@JAG–thanks for posting the Hootie link.
@Ashton–I left you a message on youtube. Beautiful job.

Paynter Update Wed. Sept 19 in morning A.ZAYAT tweet
paynter up @JustinZayat good night last nigth no fever all blood work good ,very comfortablehe is out now glazing good response for new med
(Keta Note: This is as is. Usually Mr. Zayat has Justin tweet for him. This seems to his own Tweet.
Ray Paulick (Paulick Report) did a series of tweets between 9 to 10 AM Pacific.
Here they are:
Paynter much like Barbaro struggle. Like the Jacksons, A. Zayat understands how much fans care for the horse, transparency so important.
Ray Paulick tweet: A. Zayat on Paynter and aggressive treatments. “This week has been very tough on him…. Last 24 hours have been almost miraculous.”
Ray Paulick tweet: A. Zayat on Paynter “unbelievable roller coaster…sleepless nights…there is point where you don’t want him to feel he is being abused.”
Ray Paulick tweet: A. Zayat discussing serious subject of Paynter’s health on @TVG but had to chuckle at how he refers to Bob Baedeker as “Mr. B.” #Respect
Keta Note: Mr Zayat was interviewed on TVG this morning. Did not see it.
So far, have not found a link to interview.

This goes back a long way, but I think it still applies. Eve since I first started going to the races back in the dark ages there were guys selling tip sheets in front of the track and sometimes along the way there. I’s sure the prices have changed, but it used to be Bob, Bernie and Duke for 50 cents and Baedeker for a dollar. I always wondered why his sheet was worth more.

OMG, TC, the tip sheets…hahaha.
I had forgotten about those.
I had a bookie ask me on day…..what did you know about that long shot?
My reply…I own him!!!!!!

Dear Ann and TC GP:
That’s a line right out of “Let It Ride”. Ann if you get the chance, watch this movie. I think it’s the best ever done on racing. Hugs, JB

Judy, I will watch this movie asap. Looks great. Thanks!
Keta
Terry,
Hopefully one would be a better return on investment.
Glad you caught that–it made me smile.

How exciting. I can’t wait!
What do you think cappers?
Terry Crow GP
The track is tricky and it is a question of which horse can handle the footing. If it was a rematch at the same track the Travers was run, I would favor Golden Ticket.
Ann NC RN
TC,
The only time i ever saw this track, the conditions were frozen tundra.
It was cold, cold, cold. The horse we went to watch would not even get in the gate. The horse simply wanted to go back to his warm stall. he was the only smart one that day.
Hubby and I left and did wheelies on the frozen parking lot. The parking attendants gave us the thumbs up,we are RNs afterall!!!!
