Good Morning,
Well, I am feeling fabulous this morning! After I came back from Darley yesterday, I relaxed and enjoyed the rest of the day in my regular routine with my friends. We had a great time ‘visiting’ and “just doing girl talk!” It was also a day when one reflects on one’s family. I have this great photo of Mario I wanted to share with YOU. When he came to visit me last time, Mario also spent some fun time visiting other farms. He really wanted to meet MY MOM, VERTIGINEUX. We were able to make this happen for him.
During his visit with Vertigineux, he spent a great deal of time just laughing and smiling! I guess it is because she is “MY MOM”! Mario commented that we have some very similar physical qualities. She is also a good-sized MARE with a PRETTY FACE and GREAT eyes! And look at those adorable EARS! I really believe all of my friends at BARN 55 would know them ANYWHERE! (I think my whole family has a ‘thing’ for fabulous EARS!) Very, very cute!
As for my personal ‘baby’ status, many of you asked several questions about what happens next. Well, with horses, the vets will scan me at approximately 16 days to see if “I look to be in foal”. This is considered to be the ‘early pregnancy scan’. If all looks to be in good order…they will rescan me about 12-14 days later. The primary goal of these early check-ups/scans is always to monitor the “IN FOAL STATUS.” The third pregnancy scan is done 42-45 days from the breeding date. This one is especially important. At this stage, it is really a good sign when all is A-OK with the pregnancy. So, I’ll update you as we go along…but the 42-45 day report is very, very important!
Like I said yesterday…HOOVES CROSSED.
All of my CA FRIENDS and BARN 55 are very excited! Dottie was teasing them….THINK “BLUE” or THINK “PINK.” The anticipation is so much fun! Also, I did want to tell you that I so appreciate ALL of the KIND WORDS, CONCERN, and THOUGHTS you shared with ME on my Web-site and Facebook Page. You are all such loving and caring friends! I hope the next year is a GREAT EXPERIENCE for all of us! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR EVERYTHING!
I will keep you posted!
With love,
HUGS TO ALL~

@DeIrene,
In TB terms a ‘half-sibling’ designated foals from the same mare. Not from the same sire.
So no, Street Sense would not be considered her ‘half-brother’ though the mare Balance is considered her ‘half-sister’ because Zenyatta and Balance have the same dam.
ENSIGN
Hi Delrene,
.
Biologically Street Sense is a half brother to Zenyatta but in equine terms we only refer to siblings as being from the same dam as full or half siblings, not those that share a same sire.

LOL L, you beat me on that one! : )

Hi, Zenny! Am I the only one who thinks you are an exact look-a-like for your great grandfather Roberto? [ On Mom’s side] Your FB photos have a few pic’s of him – your mom and he are beautiful, as are you! Your face is exactly like his! And you pose like him too! Love you Zenny!! Karen

Zenyatta I wanted to say good night. I wrote from school and need to correct my class and I send you HUGS and KISSES. When I have 24 5th graders around the computer it gets crazy. I to hope to see you someday too. I hope this summer but I will listen to whatever your LE family says. Robbie had a great idea about sending Mario to see you. I am in and will help donate if it means making you happy and that wonderful Mario. I love you sweet girl. Pleasant dreams. HUGS and KISSES, Shari from Ohio XXXOOO

You are far braver than I. He would have you
On the front line ready for the worst and be sitting
In his bullet proof house drinking beer and eating
Bon bobs. I believe the term is narcarcist.

My Sweet Lady Zenyatta, What an awesome photo of your Mom! Mario looks as happy with her as he did with you. You & your mom are so beautiful! I thought that was you at first because of the ears and the look then I saw the white star then I knew that wasn’t you. You hold your head and look the same way your Mom does. I am so glad you had a good rest of the day with your friends. That’s so cool! Dottie, Thank You so much for the info in this post about the scans. I’ll keep praying for a healthy pregnancy and that 42 day scan. It would be so awesome if you do have a girl and she grows up to be big & beautiful like you & your Mom and fast as you! Three living generations. What a family potrait that would be. It’s fun just to imagine! I love you so much, Zenyatta! Just be yourself, enjoy life, relax with your girlfriends & don’t stress over anything, roll when you want to & rest in the sunshine. Life is so sweet for you! Sending Hugs & Kisses From Alabama With Love, Amanda G.
Dottie, you are so awesome for keeping these posts going and providing the info you do. Thank You!!

@ Luvhorses,
.
I challenge you to come on here and actually post something about Zenyatta or horses in general, instead of coming on here just to trash talk me. Think you could manage that? Do you really think the rest of the posters here enjoy reading your vitriol?
Amanda Gilliland
I left this off my post. @RobbiePK-Great idea about Mario. Count me in. I think that would be great for him to go see Zenyatta.

My goodness where are some of these people coming from….NASTY NASTY. I enjoy hearing all viewpoints and info, if you people don’t then DON’T read their comments!! Zen you look like mama but I agree with Karen from Long Beach, if you see Roberto (on Zen’s facebook under other pics) she has the exact same blaze as he does. So maybe that will pass on to baby Z. I can just imagine what you girls talked about in the hay klutch this morning, I wonder if you were comparing notes, ha ha. Stay safe. Luv and kisses on your nose

Thanks for all the WONDERFUL posts Dottie/Zenyatta! What a thrill to be able to stay informed on what is happening with Queen Z!! And, for those who asked if mares remember their foals, here’s my experience… Quite a few years ago I had a Thoroughbred mare that I bred twice. She had a colt and then a filly. I never got to spend a lot of time around the colt after he was sold and went off to the races (other than to go watch him run which was a HUGE thrill!). But when the filly was about a year and a half, her owner (a friend of mine who bought her from me as a weanling since she was a breeder and her husband was a trainer)asked if we could keep her for a few months before she began her training. My mare and her shared a pasture and from the day she arrived it DEFINITELY appeared as though the mare remembered her. The mare (her mom) was generally unfriendly to most other horses, but she followed the filly around like a puppy and even shared her food with her. She defended the filly from my friend’s mare who was her pasture-mate when the other mare tried to run the filly off from her food or act aggressive toward her. She also stood over the filly at night while she lay sleeping. We thought it was amazing! After she left, the mare was definitely upset. When I bought her back about six months later and returned her to the pasture with my mare and my friend’s horse, it started all over like she never left. So, no telling if they actually can remember, but our experience certainly made it seem so!

RIP dear Clear Mandate. I’m sure you will be mourned.
And good night, sweet Zenny. Talk to you tomorrow. Love you always.

@Sue Frederick,
I agree as well about Roberto. When I saw his picture it jumped out at me almost at once. I think it’s the eye, honestly. I like Zenyatta’s eye and head better than her dam.

Wow Zenny you are so like your Mom!! You will have beautiful babies. Keep us updated!!
Love you

Good evening beautiful girl. I am glad that you had a pleasant day after that new experience of yesterday. I wondered what was going on inside your amazing mind while you were being transported in a van since your last van ride was after a long plane ride from CA. Wonder if you thought you were headed back to CA. But we all know, you are truly enjoying your new life of leisure. Who can blame you?
For those that want to see a Derby contender for this year that is by “Bernie”, just look at, To Honor and Serve. A very nice looking colt owned by Pin Oak Farm, who also own Queen Z’s half brother, Souper Spectacular. If you look at the silks worn by the jockey, which in this case is Johnny V. for both colts, they should ring a bell.
Happy Friday to you Zenny. We are bracing for another snowstorm here in northern New York. Yahoo!

Hi Starr,
.
Thanks for sharing your nice story.
.
I’ve seen both sides and I think some dams and foals do know each other later, and some do not. It does seem like those mares that have had a very strong bond with a foal do tend to be those who seem to remember their offspring if re-introduced at a later date. Some mares are more independent, ‘aloof’ moms than others, and the same is true for foals. Some are totally dependent on mom, others are very independent from the start.
.
Sometimes I think mares may remember their offspring but are just not that maternal once the foal has been weaned and gone for a length of time and it’s more indifference than lack of recognition. I’ve seen cases of foals put back with their dam a year after being weaned, and immediately go back to trying to nurse from their dam. Some mares even accept that, others, not so much…!

PS…I certainly agree with Sue & L on Z’s resemblance to Roberto.
There’s a nice color photo of him here:

Aw, Zenny, you and your Mom look as if sisters :) not mother and daughter. Very good genes indeed!
@RobbiePK: Count me in for the “Fan Trip for Mario”.
@Ensign: Time to ignore once again. And yes, condolences to Clear Mandates connections. Such a sad thing on such a happy occasion.
Eagerly awaiting the foal updates and possibly updates on your BBF’s Zen, if their connections are so willing. Healthy Moms and Babes all around.
Lotsa love to all!!!

Good Evening, Zenyatta
what a cutie your Mom is, I do see the resemblance now. Especially around your snootie, the lt reddish brown, that’s definitely from your Mom. Street Cry doesn’t have that, but you have his dots, your Mom doesn’t have those. And that expression with her mouth, I have seen you do that in a picture. Too cute :) :) :) I am breathing a sigh of relief that everything came out ok yesterday. It was such a big day for you, and I was worried, but you’re such a trooper :) :) :)
Well, Zetty, sleep tight and sweet dreams

OH Queen, Your mom is beautiful just like you…. Someone mentioned ur baby being named after another Sting song? How about RoxZanne!!!!!! love you. Nite nite.

Hi Zenny: Your Mama is beautiful just like you! I think you got your white socks from your Daddy though! He has little tennis type, white socks and you have anklets. I hope John is able to find more pictures of you when you were 2. We hope to compare your early photos with little baby Zenny’s photos someday. We love you Zenny. The next 16 days are going to be real toe tappers. Along with all of your fans, I am keeping my figures crossed.
@Robbie: You can also count me in, too!
Debi
Zennie, what a nice idea that we should be introduced to your mom today! She is lovely and she posed beautifully for the camera, and she even smiled. Now we know where you get your little cuties from! Mario looks so happy too! I ordered a tee shirt yesterday to commemorate your big day :)

What a great picture!!! Mario’s love for Zenyatta is a beautiful thing to see. Wanting to meet her Mom says it all. Vertigineux is gorgeous. Like mother, like daughter. There is definitely a family resemblance there.
Ensign your posts are very informative, and you are right, foaling is not risk free. There was nothing wrong with mentioning that. Some people need to relax and not read into things that aren’t there. Let’s keep this a nice pleasant blog where we declare our love for the Queen and learn at the same time. That’s a win-win for everyone.

You get your size from your dad, but you have your mom’s head and more refined barrel and hips :) and don’t forget the ears!

It seems it does.

@ Robbie PK, I too would love to contribute to a fund to bring Mario to LE to see Zenyatta again. It has always seemed to me that he has a most special connection (and perhaps the closest bond) with Zenyatta and probably contributed greatly to her personality and kind, gentle temperament. And I think your idea would show Mario how much we think of him. Karen Mitchell in Berkeley, CA.
