Good Morning,
Well, I am feeling fabulous this morning! After I came back from Darley yesterday, I relaxed and enjoyed the rest of the day in my regular routine with my friends. We had a great time ‘visiting’ and “just doing girl talk!” It was also a day when one reflects on one’s family. I have this great photo of Mario I wanted to share with YOU. When he came to visit me last time, Mario also spent some fun time visiting other farms. He really wanted to meet MY MOM, VERTIGINEUX. We were able to make this happen for him.
During his visit with Vertigineux, he spent a great deal of time just laughing and smiling! I guess it is because she is “MY MOM”! Mario commented that we have some very similar physical qualities. She is also a good-sized MARE with a PRETTY FACE and GREAT eyes! And look at those adorable EARS! I really believe all of my friends at BARN 55 would know them ANYWHERE! (I think my whole family has a ‘thing’ for fabulous EARS!) Very, very cute!
As for my personal ‘baby’ status, many of you asked several questions about what happens next. Well, with horses, the vets will scan me at approximately 16 days to see if “I look to be in foal”. This is considered to be the ‘early pregnancy scan’. If all looks to be in good order…they will rescan me about 12-14 days later. The primary goal of these early check-ups/scans is always to monitor the “IN FOAL STATUS.” The third pregnancy scan is done 42-45 days from the breeding date. This one is especially important. At this stage, it is really a good sign when all is A-OK with the pregnancy. So, I’ll update you as we go along…but the 42-45 day report is very, very important!
Like I said yesterday…HOOVES CROSSED.
All of my CA FRIENDS and BARN 55 are very excited! Dottie was teasing them….THINK “BLUE” or THINK “PINK.” The anticipation is so much fun! Also, I did want to tell you that I so appreciate ALL of the KIND WORDS, CONCERN, and THOUGHTS you shared with ME on my Web-site and Facebook Page. You are all such loving and caring friends! I hope the next year is a GREAT EXPERIENCE for all of us! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR EVERYTHING!
I will keep you posted!
With love,
HUGS TO ALL~

Was there ANY reason why you would post such a sad thing here when we are thinking only of Zen ? Is there something wrong with you?

@Mars re: Istabraq.- Irish Thoroughbred, grandson of Secretariat. Thanks for link….read the article & watched video…all I can say is, Ahhh, the Irish..I sent my daughter, at 13, to an equestrian camp outside of Dublin for a week. She had only been taking one lesson per week, in NJ, for about a year, and was doing a few small cross-rail courses. She lived with an Irish family, and the camp was an all day affair. Within that one week, she was hurdling over 3 ft. jumps, doing a bit of eventing, jumping over ditches on an Irish hunter…amazing! It was a fantastic experience for her, and she will never forget the lush emerald isle. Legends speak of the benefit the minerals in the land are to the horses, nutrients they soak up through their feet. She was also fortunate to attend the Kerrygold (Royal Dublin horseshow) one day, as it coincided with her time there. This was quite a few years ago, but a once in a lifetime experience one cherishes forever.

Hi Janet C,
.
Most farms that board broodmares have several dedicated foaling staff. Some large farms will foal out 3+ mares a night but that’s usually only at a peak time. They also usually have a vet on staff, or one who works with them closely whos close by.
.
The majority of births will run fairly smoothly and once the foal is safely delivered and up, it’s just a matter of quietly watching mom and baby to make sure all seems normal, and that she’s passed the afterbirth within a proper amount of time. Less is usually more as far as involvement goes once baby is up and has nursed. It gives mom and kid a chance to bond : )
Christine
Night Zen,
Hope you had a good day. Thinking only good thoughts for you. Like your mom did for sure.

@ Buzzy,
.
I just wanted to send my condolences on the loss of a nice mare. No ill will intended. Do you people have to try and vilify me over EVERYTHING I post?!
.
So let me get this straight then…it’s perfectly acceptable to mention Barbaro, Ruffian, Eight Belles on any particular post but *I* can’t pay my respects to a nice mare & producer?

Like mother, like daughter. Best of luck to you in the next coming weeks. I can’t thank team Z for sharing this and so many other moments with us. I look forward to this journey as I am sure everyone else is. Take care!

Your Mom is beautiful Zenyatta and I can only imagine how proud she is of you. Thank you so much for keeping us informed about your day to day happenings. I enjoy reading about your very interesting life and about the wonderful people who love you.

Beautiful Queen Zenyatta,
What a pretty mom you have! It looks like she may have a sense of humor and a free spirit heart.
Praying that all goes well for you and your little one. I know that you will be a wonderful mom.
Love and hugs!

Zenyatta, you do favor your pretty mom . I know that one day you will have a beautiful baby. I hope it is a little dancer like you. But most of all. I pray for your health. May God continue to have his angels watch over you. Love you so much!

Z’s half sister EBE is a dark bay with no white markings. She takes after her sire Bernardini. However, Street Cry Z’s sire has two white rear socks so Z may have more influence than her mother did on
white in her foal .

Dearest Zenyatta. How special was the love that everyone expressed for you yesterday, Zenny! Over 500 diary responses. Wow! You’ve taken your first step towards motherhood, beautiful. Whenever I visit Kentucky I try to get to see some of the broodmare bands. The mares are breathtaking in their simple beauty and the foal’s capture you heart with one look of those big brown eyes, a gentle rub of a velvet ear or the curious touch of a satin nose. Perhaps you will become a “blue hen” one day Zenny. A mare that has proved herself exceptional in producing high quality foals, one of those magical creatures who leaves her mark upon the thoroughbred for generations to come. Wouldn’t that be special? The picture of your mother is absolutely lovely. She is one very special broodmare, she had you! And wasn’t Mario’s smile priceless. I read the article about David and enjoyed it a great deal. His experience is remarkable. Dottie, I am sure you are very happy to have such a successful, handsome son, who from all appearances is enjoying his life immensely. You must have a very special relationship. I know I love my own mother, more that anything. We enjoy every minute of the time we spend together. She has always given encouragement and inspired me with gentle humor and loving advice to believe that there is nothing I can not do. For all of my own success in life, the greatest honor I can receive is the note of pride in my mother’s voice when she talks about me. It is priceless. I have often heard the same tone in the voices of Team Z, when they talk about you Zenny. Thank you again for sharing this marvelous adventure with us. Still holding the hope of a visit, when it is safe to do so. Sweet dreams. Hugs and kisses. XXXOOO

You are not a Zenyatta fan. Why are you talking about foaling and dead
Foals and mares. You are only connected to your pompus arrogant self. STOP

Glad you are happy and healthy. You mother is really beautiful. I know he posts may not come every day now, but please keep us updated. Love you Queen. Hugs and Kisses.

That is a beautiful picture of your mother, Zenyatta. Mario had a great opportunity meeting her. She looks a lot like you and I’m sure your foals will carry on the tradition which is definitely a good one. I hope your father comes in to the picture at some point. I wonder if he looks like you as well. I will guess that he does. I’m happy to hear that your pregnancy status is going well so far. Take care of yourself because everything you do for a little while now is going to affect the foal(s) that you are currently carrying, even if that does mean less time out in the fields with your friends. You will have the rest of your life for that after your foal is born or up until you are carrying the next foal or so. Keep me posted on your pregnancy status.

I am hoping for pink…and a good name from a Sting album!

Dear Zenny,
What a beautiful mother you have! And yes, the ears. I guess that I never paid too much attention to them before, but thank you for teaching us what you think!
My hooves are crossed. I hope that the 42-45 days go by quickly for you.
Love and Hugs, Joan

Awww, Zenny…what a lovely pic. of your mom and Mario. She is so beautiful, just like you!
I am also sad to hear about Clear Mandate. RIP. My condolences to her connections!

Janet C,

Luvhorses,

Glad you ‘love’ horses as you’re full of an awful lot of hatred for humankind. On a site that members claim to try and promote a love of horses and respect and learning, I’ve seen more hatred, disrespect and nastiness than I’ve seen in a long time. Congradulations on sucking the fun out of this ‘forum’.
.
I’ll only repeat this part once more. There have been literally HUNDREDS of posts regarding Barbaro, Ruffian, Eight Belles, Go For Wand, etc. but my one mention of respect for a nice mare gone and my sadness over the fact that we do lose some mares like her each year brings about an attack and more insinuations and name calling. This is like kindergarden in hell.
L
@Paul,
Foal, singular. They would not let her carry more than one.
A shame about Clear Mandate, she was one of the “Blessed” and unsung heroes. It is part of what makes this a risky but rewarding time of life.

Your mama is beautiful, Zenyatta! Nice that Mario got to meet her and spend some time in her company.
So happy that you are doing well and glad that you are in such good spirits.
While your hooves are crossed sweetie, my fingers will remain crossed. You are so adorable.
Love & Blessings to you

Will you or have you ever spend time with your mom in a pasture again or is that too complicated for your siblings?
Dani
@Abigail – another terrific look back at a special horse, one that I admit I had never heard of before. But then I knew nothing of National Hunt racing either until I read your blog. Your ‘racing vault’ is full of such enchanting and historically fascinating stories. By the way, I also like your name for Ms. Z and Mr. B’s foal – All Too Beautiful.
@Sandy – the photo you are looking for with Zenyatta ‘hugging’ Mario is in Barbara Livingston’s lovely tribute to Zenyatta:

Dearest Sweet “Z”,
Hoping for ‘Teal AND Pink’ only means that perhaps our Mike Smith would be riding your little filly or colt…and that would be UNBELIEVABLE MEMORIES for all to share! As long as you are safe, and your little one is well, why not hope for an extra blessing – “For with God all things are possible.”
L
@nDfilly,
Zenyatta’s dam is not boarded at Lanes End. Remember she is not owned by the Moss’s but by Coolmore.
Which is most likely why she has never visted Street Cry again.
Delrene
Please forgive me for my lack of knowledge, but I do have a question. If Street Cry is your Father, is Street Sense considered your half-brother? You share the same father, but not the same dam. Your Mama is a beauty and she had a beautiful baby….. YOU!! You will have a beautiful baby too, who knows what sex, but who cares???? Just be safe, happy and healthy. As an aside I spoke to a very nice woman Chris at the store at Santa Anita. A slight glitch in my poster , but all straightened out. They all love you and she was delightful on the phone. All your beauty and kindness rubs off on everyone/
Thanks Z and Dottie for all you do. Love the picture of your Mama and the info on your Dad

Ooooh just read – Mr. and Mrs. Moss were named Owners of the Year (3rd straight time) by the Thoroughbred Owners of California. Congratulations!!!!:)
