Good Morning,
I hope you had a very nice weekend. Our weather is still ‘nice’ here in Kentucky and I am able to enjoy my time outside with my paddock friends each day. Well, I wanted to tell you about some of my other friends…back in California. This morning, Dottie was going over the update on how the “ZENYATTA LOUNGE for Women” is doing at Santa Anita. We wanted to share the progress with you.
Firstly, A BIG THANK YOU to all of the people who brought products and items to donate to the Lounge on Secretariat Award Day! These items are greatly appreciated…and the women are very thankful for your thoughtfulness.
Secondly, we are getting several different types of classes organized to help the ladies with various academic skills. Thus, as you can see in the photo above, we all have so many different things to learn in life. For us to do our best, we need to have people around us who care…and want to help us learn. In this photo, I am ‘schooling at the starting gate’. Because I was a BIG GIRL…the starting gate took quite some time for me to feel comfortable in it. I needed to learn these lessons and fortunately “the people around me took the time and patience to teach me the skills I needed to succeed.”
With the Lounge, we are trying to do the same thing….HELP PEOPLE TO LEARN things which will help to make their lives easier. We are now offering educational classes for the ladies. Sister Soledad is teaching the English Classes. We have 2 different levels offered: beginning English and then an intermediate type class. We also have an availability for some 1-1 in this area. Additionally, the Rosetta Stone Program is offered on the Lounge computer for extra practice. We are also fortunate to have Al, who does the computer tech work for Santa Anita, volunteer his time to teach COMPUTER SKILLS to the ladies. He comes out every 2 weeks and teaches a lesson….and then gives ‘homework’ and ‘follow-up’ activities for them to work on until the next lesson.
It is so special when people CARE and WANT TO HELP OTHERS. As I was fortunate to have people around we who worked to help me achieve….it is so gratifying to see others extend this helping hand. We are so fortunate!
The ZENYATTA LOUNGE also offers fun activities like BINGO (where we have pizza and sodas in addition to playing the games). The Ladies had a Valentine Exchange Get-together, and then there is the Once-A-Month…GIRLS NIGHT OUT to a restaurant. Here we celebrate the birthdays for the ladies for that month. Each birthday ‘girl’ is given a FACIAL as her gift!
Things are really moving along beautifully with the LOUNGE. It is so special to hear that these LADIES are really getting involved in LEARNING and TAKING SUCH AN INTEREST in doing all of these wonderful activities. Also, it is great to note, that they are sharing these activities with their friends….and HAVING FUN!
I am so PROUD of everyone who is helping, volunteering their time….and participating! I’d personally like to THANK EVERYONE who is striving to make the ZENYATTA LOUNGE for WOMEN a SUCCESS!
With Love,
Hugs to All~

Dear Zenyatta, Dottie and the rest of the team. The support you and so many others have given the Ladies Lounge warms my heart; I so believe in Women Power and the ability to improve one’s life.
@ Dawn Conrad: Several weeks ago I made a comment about how much Z has meant to me since my husband died and you sent me the most caring and supportive comment in return. I had no idea how much you are struggling with until I read your recent post, and I just wanted to tell you I care very much and will think all the positive thoughts and good wishes I can for your health to improve. Take care and keep on writing in; your comments are among the most intelligent and insightful of all.

You inspire so many people to help others, Zenyatta! Never mind being a great ambassador for your sport, I think you’re a great ambassador for LIVING! You’re a very special girl, Zenny, and you come from a family of very special people. Would that there were more Mosses and Shirreffs in the world, the world would be a much better place!
Love you, Sweet Zen!

As a retired educator, I am so pleased that your connections are assisting with learning in your name. You and your team do so much good. I’m not surprised that they took the time to make you feel comfortable in the starting gate – just one more example of all the things that were done right with your schooling/training. You are so fortunate to have so many people that care about you and love you and we are all so fortunate that they share you and all of your experiences with us! Look forward to hearing more – thanks Dottie!

A big thank you to you and your team for all have done to help others (animal or humsn)! You have given up hope and courage for a better tomorrow.
Michelle
Wow, you look like a “normal” size horse at 2. I am so thankful that you were in the hands of John, Dottie, Jerry and Ann who were patient with you and let you grow up. Lots of other trainers would not have given you the time needed to develop into the magnificent racehorse that you are. We miss you so much on the track but are so thankful that you are safe, sound and happy. The Zenyatta Lounge proves even more what classy nice people you have around you. I will love you forever Z!
Suzen
Zenny,
I think you should run for president in 2012.
Diana
What a wonderful gift to these women! Thank you for caring and giving back!

@ Peggy,
.
The stallion complex and breeding shed are in a different area of the farm at LE than where Zenyatta is kept so they’d not have seen each other.
Rachel would have been vanned back home after her breeding this morning.
cheryl
AGAIN—the Z connections are just the very very BEST! Always caring, always doing for others, what a crew!
Selene McCarthy
Such a cute picture, Zenny! I love the way you are looking at the other horse in the gate as if to say “Am I doing this right?”
Great job, Team Z with the Ladies Lounge!
