And Robbie: True old-timers taught me the more you get around horses, the more they teach you. Horsemen are quiet, listening, in a dance never quite leading; more, you try not interfering. Can`t claim to be one, but those authentic entrusted some good goers, which kept me humbled, aiming to be honest, as the horse always is with people.

Thank you so much Penny this is such a wonderful new award. I am so glad Zenyatta won it. Peggy

Congrats on the People’s Award too Big Z. I’m so happy about the way things turned out it brings tears to my eyes. Love the new pictures Steve posted on Bloodhorse of you. You look so happy with your BFF Pirate Queen. I think all the girls look up to you and like to follow you around.
I read the entry on Backside 55.com on how to keep abreast of John’s horses and when they may be running. Another really easy way is go to equibase.com and create a virtual stable. In that stable you can choose whatever horses, jockeys and trainers you would like to follow. Of course in my stable John is the only trainer so far. They will e-mail you with all entries for that trainer and then later they e-mail you the results. It’s really easy, except if you have as many horses in your stable as I do you get alot of e-mails. I’m very interested in when Maestro and Escadar may be starting, so I follow their workouts amongst others. Love to you Big Z and all your family in CA and at LE. Lori

Yes, it is indeed a very gracious move for Penney Chennery to start the new “Voice of the People’s Award” and honor our beloved Zenyatta as the first recipient. If we wait for the industry to make any move it would take another century for change. Hooray “girl power!” I hope a lot of Z’s fans come out to this wonderful and historic award celebration Feb. 5th at Santa Anita.
Cheryl
I am still just giddy with the glow of your victory! Lets make a record number of comments!! Zenyatta is the best horse to ever ever step on a race track or anywhere for that matter!! LOVE YOU LOVE YOU LOVE YOU!!!!!
Mary
Just got back from my 8th theater trip to see “Secretariat” and feel his greatness is equaled by the beautiful Z. I am so glad that the racing community has honored her as is her right.

Dearest Queen-Z & Team-Z,
I just learned of another wonderful award given to Z & Team-Z, by Penney Chennery. How appropriate that she named the award, “The Voice of the People”. I keep thinking, about Queen-Z & Team-Z winning a “People’s Choice Award”, too !!! You all are certainly my CHOICE…and my inspiration. See you at Santa Anita, 2/5/11. Hugs and kisses, OraJean

Good Morning Zenny:
How’s the 2010 Horse of the Year doing this morning? You and your Posse are probably getting ready to head out into your paddock. I bet everyone is still basking in the glow of your great and much deserved win at the Eclipse Awards. Penny Chenery is another class act like your team and “The Voice of the People” award she has created in the memory of Secretariat is outstanding. You and Secretariat are two racing legends that have done so much for the sport. It is so fitting that you will be the first recipient of this award because you really are “The People’s Horse.” Now we are all awaiting the big announcement of the lucky stallion choice for you. Also, waiting for John’s pictures and videos. I chuckled when I saw he was wearing a “Z” hat like the one I have. Ordered it from your website merchandise section. Love it that Ann couldn’t wait to phone you after you were announced as HOTY! Such joy spread throughout the whole country (and the world) with the proclamation “HORSE OF THE YEAR 2010 IS ZENYATTA!” I have watched the video of the announcement over and over and cry with joy everytime.
So, so happy for you all.
Hugs & nose kisses.

How is the HORSE OF THE YEAR doing this morning. You and your Posse had better get out early this morning, more snow on the way today. Stay warm, Love from Tn.

Congrats Zenyatta for Horse of the Year, AP Female Athlete of the Year 2nd place, and Voice of the People awards! Perfectly fitting for Penny Chenery to establish this new award considering her role in Secretariat’s career during a time when most women stayed in the kitchen. Her action also honors the bloodlines of Princequillo found in both Secretariat and Zenyatta, making them very distant cousins. Zenyatta you should try some red wine to celebrate, a girls drink, perhaps Shiraz to keep your heart healthy!
Dani
Steve Haskin has added more photos of Zenyatta to his Facebook photo album and has also added photos of the stallions as well. Some real favorites in there. …..

…..I still replay the awards ceremony and the moment Zenyatta’s name is called out as Horse of the Year. It continues to bring a rush of extraordinary happiness. :)

I try to read as many of the other posts as possible and I find such joy, enthusiasm and kindness therein!! A virtual community is really nice (just imagine a website diary for Secretariat or Seattle Slew, among many greats in the pre-internet days)although some of my fondest memories are being together at a racetrack with thousands of other Z fans! (Wish I could be at Santa Anita on Feb 5) kudos to every “post-er” for the positive, celebratory nature of your words!
Jenna
My Breyer order just went through..yippee!

First a comment on “L’s” comment of Jan. 19th. “Neither horse (Blame or Zenyatta) showed the “versatility” and “class” of Rachel’s 3 year old year”. What’s that all about? Rachel who? Oh, the Rachel who ducked big Z in the 2010 Appleblossom:) “Versatility” ok but “class”, get serious. No one has more class that Zenyatta in any year:).
Now to the really important stuff. Here’s a new declaration: Congratulations to Team Zenyatta for winning the 2010 HOY, a well-deserved award which was a long time coming. In retrospect she could easily have won it 3 years in a row, especially if Curlin and Rachel had lined up against her in 2008 and 2009. To get HOY I would agree that you have to look at the particular horses campaign for that year BUT a HOY SHOULD BE REQUIRED to run in the BCC as well. That should settle all the arguments. For example if Rachel had run in the 2009 BCC I think we all know who would have won the 2009 HOY!
I was in hog heaven watching the Steelers win on Saturday followed by Zenyatta’s victory on Monday night. It was all so grand:)
Patricia
Does anyone know if we can get access to the Awards ceremony from Monday night on the internet?
Thanks
L
@Joan,
I did not say anything about JJ’s horses coming home safe. That is something anyone with an ounce of compassion for horses wants for all of them when they step on the track. I said I would not support his horses, in terms of letting myself become attached to them as a fan, wagering money on them at the betting window or expecting any sort of consideration from JJ such as the Mosses have shown the fans of Zenyatta.
@Dr. D,
Rachel Alexandra is a horse. She didn’t ‘duck’ anyone. She ran when she was put in the gate against any other horse in the gate. If you want to say JJ and SA ‘ducked’ running against Zenyatta, then say *that* it had nothing to do with the horse. I will be the first to speak against the way RA was handled when she was bought by JJ and transferred to SA stable. Hal Wiggins did an AMAZING job with her and I have nothing but respect for him as a trainer and a person. But to speak so disparagingly about a very good filly, to speak down about a very good colt (Blame) is wrong.
Take a look on Steve Haskin’s blog, in the comments. One commenter has put up a beautiful challenge to Zenyatta fans. These are NOT my words but to paraphrase, this commenter has challenged Zenyatta fans to continue their support of the sport. To find a horse or horses running now to be supportive of, interested in. Be it big Grade I runners or the bread and butter hard knockers. To go to their local racetrack (if they have one) and support the businesses at the track. To support the many charities that work to help retired racehorses, the programs for education and support of disabled jockeys.
By all means, cheer and enjoy Zenyatta but I can’t believe anyone on the gracious Team Z would want that support to come at the badmouthing of the other gallant horses who have and who will step onto the track for our pleasure.
Judy Huffman
Congratulations to You Zenyatta and your wonderful team that has developed you and been with you all of the way!!! You are a very special horse and your charisma has been so charming. Horse of the Year and of the decade and of the century is what your are. You will not be forgotten by your fans.
I was able to pull up the Eclipse awards ceremony and see all of the winners and presentations on the web. I think it was under Eclipse Awards Ceremony.
It was so exciting to see Zenyatta and her team get the award that they so deserve. I had to cry tears of joy at the announcement of HOY!!!
Wishing you the very best with the next step of your life. Live long, be healthy and produce wonderful foals just like their Mother.
It is great to read your news and thanks to Dotty and you for your lessons in thoroughbred training and racing 101. Now I want another horse to ride.
Love, Judy

Now please be bred to the HOY A.P Indy!

Patricia,
Scroll up to about the middle of the posts. Some very nice people linked the awards ceremony.
Jenna
I saw the comment about supporting one or more horses and the sport. I love and care about horses and am not sure I can yet support an industry unless I’m sure horses are taken care of from cradle to grave. What about the horses that never make it to the track? Not all owners and breeders are like the Mosses.
