Good Morning,
I have been having so much fun! I am really starting to feel like I am one very POPULAR HORSE! Thank you for writing so many nice things about me!
Yesterday, in the morning, JOHN and MARIO called. I was able to visit with them via TANGO. It was great to HEAR THEIR VOICES. In the afternoon, MY OWNERS called and we got to TANGO. I’m just getting up to speed on my “tech skills’…and being able to see and hear my friends on the phone like this is a real thrill. Technology is totally amazing to me!
Earlier today, Sarah put some footage up on my FACEBOOK page. I had some special family visitors. The children were so much fun. They also wanted to share with me that MY DADDY, STREET CRY, literally lives right by them. Their DAD works with MY DAD…and they get to see him all of the time. The whole family came to visit and brought me lots of HUGS from my DEAR DAD. Sweetly, they also told me HOW PROUD HE IS OF ME! I am so honored.
I know in the video, I am really ‘woofing’ down the carrots they brought. I’ve done this in the past…and rest assured, I do chew my food carefully. I LOVE carrots! And yes, my other friends in the barn also had lots of treats! I am quite good at sharing!
Several of you have also asked for a video of me PLAYING in the MUD. Sarah is getting here early each day and trying to get this …but I’m teasing her right now. (She is a very good sport!) Every time I see her, I jump up (covered in mud) and run right over to her! I’m sure she will figure out a clever way to surprise me soon and get video of me rolling in the mud for you…and she is trying! But for now, this is a FUN GAME I am playing with her!
When we talked about the different bandages yesterday, Cathleen asked about the ‘red’ color on some of them. Dottie included a photo above to help illustrate this for you. The red color is red chili pepper. These big white bandages are called ‘standing bandages’. They are made out of a nice cotton fabric. The primary reason for wearing them is to protect a horse’s legs while in the stall.
Thus, when I’m in my stall, moving around, laying down, sleeping, or getting up again, the intention is for these bandages to keep me from hitting, nicking, or scratching myself. Mario would dilute the red pepper so he could smear the substance on the bandages as shown in the photo. He would put just enough pepper on the fabric to keep me from ‘amusing myself by playing with them or removing them’. Doing this can be a FUN GAME FOR ME…but not Mario. In truth, I did want to cooperate and keep them on for protection! So, I’d go along with Mario’s plan and NOT touch my bandages! I was a very good girl!
At Lane’s End, they often put standing bandages on me when I am back in my stall. Again…for protection. The just want me to be totally safe.
Elena asked about Mario’s Facebook page that someone started for him. John checked it out for you…and it is under: MARIO ESPINOZA, GROOM!
WOW…just heard DON ROBINSON…who foaled and raised me…is coming to visit. It will be great to see him again! I better get ready!
Have a splendid day!
With Love,
Hugs to all~

Question Zenyatta: Will your owners pay the breeding fee, and completely own your baby? I sure hope so. I’m hoping to relive the whole Team Zenyatta experience with a continuing chapter. Be it a colt or filly. How exciting.

Thank you for the great posts. We appreciate keeping up with Zenyatta’s adventures and learning more about her world. Would it be possible to post the videos on Youtube as well as Facebook? I don’t want to sign up with Facebook and I’m unable to view the videos posted there. I’ve tried several times but it just shows “loading” and it never comes up.

Dearest Zenyatta and Team Z. I saw you won the Special Eclipse Award. Way to go! I am so happy for everyone. It was very much deserved. You are all such a very very special group of people and horse. I received the thank you from you today. I love it. I am going to show the children tomorrow. I will hang this picture in my classroom and cherish it forever. I love you sweet girl. Ms Zenyatta, How was your visit with Don Robinson? I bet he is proud. Let us know everything? Hugs and love, Lisa g

RICHARD: Answer to where is ALONG CAME ZENYATTA. It is on YouTube, however, when I viewed Queen’s Z’s video last night, underneath is the YouTube address, and everything Zenyatta came up on the right hand side of my screen…I spent hours last night, and am so tired tonight. It is a beautiful video, hope you find it. Lisa g

Ensign: It is a fact that Ruffian’s trainer recommended that Ruffian postpone the race due to splinters, which are not serious but need to rest..her owners said not to wait, get the match race over with, and we will not be able to be there. If only they had listened to the trainer. Again, I said nothing bad about the owners, just something good about Ann Moss. Lisa g

From Facebook: “Congrats to Zenyatta for being nominated as a finalist for Horse of The Year, and to John Shirreffs for being nominated as a finalist for Champion Trainer!!”
One step closer…one step closer!

Hi Queen Z. Congratulations to your team with the Eclipse Award, do they ever deserve it. Awesome team you have and what they have done for racing, unbelievable. I love you eating your carrots and eating outside, it is so much fun to look at your pictures. I bet you know where to find the sweetest grass. I love you a whole lot.
Hi Richard, the video Along Came Zenyatta is on youtube. Beautiful.

Ms Zenyatta, Congratulations on being nominated twice this year, again. This time you will win both. Well, really you have already won 3 years in a row as far as I am concerned. I just E mail BloodHorse to get a download on A Day with Zenyatta, cannot wait to get home and see this. It is with you and your team. Congratulations to the entire Z Team for a more than deserving award. I hope all turn to the Z Team as an example, it would be so great. Talk with you tonight, Queen Z…Lisa g

Dear Z,
I posted you earlier today and I think I may have given you the wrong info on where your Mom is living. I’m not sure she is in Kentucky. Didn’t know her owner has changed and may have her living outside of the US. Does any of the team know where she is? Love to you.
Delores
My Dear Zenyatta, I can’t wait every morning to go on your website and see what exciting things you have done and all the new stuff you tell us about. I love this web-site. You are amazing Z and I will never get tired or hearing about your adventures. Thank you Dottie, I love the way you write and makes us all feel it comes directly from our girl. Love and miss her so very much but am glad she is happy and being taken such care of.
Love you beautiful Z. Also, a little note when I read the article everyday I make the picture my screen saver. So I can look at her whenever I am on the computer.
Bye for now, love, hugs and kissesXOXO

Hi Zenny, I just read the article about Team Z winning a special Eclipse Award at bloodhorse.com. Congrats to Team Z!!! The award is well deserved. If anyone wants to read the article, you can go here:

I’m glad you are still talking with your Cali family via Tango. Technology is awesome!!
The game you are playing with Sarah is funny. I wonder how long it will be until she surprises you and catches you rolling in the mud.
Thanks for the further information about your bandages.
Have a wonderful night Zenny!
Love you,
Leslie

What a fun post today, Zenyatta. I have to laugh about the game you play with Sarah, but I hope she figures out a way to get the video. All of the information about the bandages is helpful too, but you mentioned that you wear them in your stable to keep you safe, and you mentioned laying down? I tried to find this out once before – so DO you lay down to sleep sometimes? I am always amazed that so many people learn things about you beyond what is in your diary posts. I couldn’t figure out how people knew about Team Z getting the “Special Eclipse Award.” I just decided to “Google” the term, and here is the link to the article if anyone else wants to read it: http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/national-news/2011/01/05/team-zenyatta-to-receive-special-eclipse-award.aspx
Your daily posts do so much to brighten up my life – thanks so much for all of the updates. Dottie is teaching you such good writing skills! Your Ohio friend, Sandy.

We are quite familiar with the “red pepper” trick here at home when the doggies need a bandage for anything :) I love you Z so much xoxoxo

John Sherriff, Congratulations on becoming a finalist in the Eclipse awards for trainer of the year ! We are root’in for you !!! A horse may have the potential to be great ,but not without the right trainer. ZENYATTA’s greatness is a direct reflection on your abilities as well as her own,and I wish you the best, including the Eclipse for 2011 !

Hi Zenny, I`m sure your dad is very proud of you. I just got some bad news about my mom today but still wanted to say hi and see how you were. Well, love you and wish you a good day. Lots of big hugs and alot of kisses,Alene

@ LISA G,
.
Racehorses don’t get ‘splinters’. They do get shin splints, but it’s most common in young horses.
.
Ruffian did not have shin splints and was healthy and training well right up to the match race.
.
Your remark about Zenyatta having ‘wonderful owners who care about her, not so much for Ruffian’s owners’ was most definitely derogatory and uncalled for.

For: ‘Woodswoman’ ~ Changing your own reception on-screen and flipping type & background is an option. This site is so good-looking, and rare for internet lay-outs; but for your comfort, search settings should offer compatible corrections. Doesn’t ‘Google’ Set-Up offer reverse type, and numerous color options? . .. Anyone more tech savvy know a better solution? Khc.

Congratulations to Team Z for the well deserved Eclipse Award. Now on to Zenny for the HOY Award. If she still does not get the vote then it will be a missed opportunity and a travesty to NOT honor and acknowledge the accomplishments, on and off the track, of this once-in-a-lifetime horse called Zenyatta.
Thanks for the info on your bandages. BTW, who gets to bathe and clean you at LE after you roll in the mud?
Looking forward to your next post. I wish I could TANGO with you too.
Kathryn Cogswell
Dear Lisa G: Your ‘Z-Dust’ tickles & thanks for the magic. Words on an even keel, and their benefit-of-the-doubt courtesies mean a lot when information drifts & is not all cast in stone. Tolerance & a lick of humor carry over the bumps; and, for certain, I do recall being heart-sick those days after the match race, as reports circulated. Tangles sort themselves out sooner or later . .. and knots or nuts, as someone above said of her fun family . .. it takes a little sweetness to smooth out the brittle. Stick tight in your Ruby Slippers. Khc.

Dear Z a 5 Star congratulations on you Eclipse award. I have been following you for 2 years, I think you are the most magnificent horse ever. I have watched the best, Secretariat & watched him win the Triple Crown, he was fantastic. Can’t take anything away from hime. But I have never been so thrilled about champion like your. You are amazing, watching you dance, watching you win, mastering your ability which I’m sure you have thrilled your creator who created you, you took every gift he gave you and even surpassed it. You truly are the Queen of champions
male & female. Ihave purchased you picture
shirt and hats. I am coming to Virginia to visit my daughter and on my return home to San Diego I am stopping at Lanes End to see you and hopefulling I can have my picture taken with you. I am awestruct by your greatness. I Love You

@Ensign. I debated getting into an argument about Ruffian, but I think you need to Google her and read the Wikipedia entry. Ruffian DID have shin splints as well as a hairline fracture of a hind leg after the Spinaway Stakes. Ruffian was a 3 year old when she ran the match race. Excuse my ignorance, but to me a 3 year old is a young horse. Ruffian’s sire, Reviewer, had to be euthanized after his 4th breakdown and her dam, Shenanigans, broke 2 legs during her racing career. Many believe Ruffians damsire, the great Native Dancer, has passed along a legacy of soft-boned horses. I’m not into the bloodlines well enough to say yes or not to that. There are many that believe that Ruffian would have lived a long life if she had not run that match race. Perhaps she would but, really, that doesn’t matter now because it’s over and done. I know you have much greater knowledge of racing than I do but I had to comment on your misquote that Ruffian didn’t have shin splints when it’s well-documented that she did. Sorry, I don’t mean to ruffle any feathers and I won’t comment about this subject again.

Ensign: Sorry about the er after Splints, but she did, and it is not uncommon. In fact, when everyone was wanting Rachel and Zenyatta to race, and Rachel would not, it came to my mind that this might be her case as well..she needed rest and correct me if I am wrong, but they ice up their legs. I wish all Racehorses could have Ann and Jerry Moss in their lives as owners…These are the OOTC, Owners of the Century. Sorry you feel so offended, but this is not about you. I love Zenyatta, and I love her entire team and wish so much that all Racehorse, racing and retired could have what she has…I feel that the Z Team will change alot of things about Racehorsing…Queen Zenyatta has already done so much. Kathryn: Love being said I have “Z Dust”, girl, I never thought I could love another horse again this much. I love Quality Road and Lookin’ at Lucky, but my heart belongs to JO Tobin, do you remember him? If you remember the match race surely you remember him. He beat Seattle Slew, what an upset..He was beautiful. Lisa g

Hi Z and everyone– I am refering back a few comments ago that Mary was asking about– the breeding fees , who will own Z’s foal? Do you think it might stay with the Mosses? I bet alot of people are very interested. Was I hearing correctly that Z’s mother sold for over 10 million? Thanks, Janet C.
Sharon Call
@Janet. The breeding fee usually is a “live foal guarantee” which means the fee is not due until the foal is born, stands up and nurses. When all of this happens, then the stud fee is paid. The owner of the mare retains ownership of the foal.

Don Robinson returned to Winter Quarter Farm as a young man when his father`s health slackened. He didn`t want to, entirely, but he got back to fooling around with the horses, and the respect for the old-style horseman his dad was, and the love for Kentucky they`d shared came back to him. It helped, too, when a respected trainer friend of Mr. R. Senior told him it didn`t so much matter that he knew everything, it was that he had the right attitude and ethic, and that`s what would count. ‘Born with it; can`t teach it.’ [Trainer Barry Abrams]. ~ Still, trying. Khc.
