Happy Friday!
The weather in Lexington has been quite ‘active’ lately and we’ve had several storm warnings. This part of my life is so different than anything I ever experienced in California. Lane’s End is exceptionally careful with us when this happens and our time outdoors is very structured and limited….if at all. Everything depends on the weather conditions and our safety.
Fortunately, TASTY and I love our stalls and are very comfy and cozy indoors. We do hope it clears up soon. This way we can get back into our ‘spending time outdoors routine’ …and things will be safer for everyone.
My days of ‘traveling alone…without a foal by my side’ are becoming more and more monitored. As of this morning, per the farm, my ‘bag’ is getting a bit larger. It is making all of the gradual changes necessary to increase in size…and I am ‘waxing a bit’. This all pertains to my udder and milk production levels which are consistently and carefully recorded all of the time now.
I must say, I never thought the words ‘bagging’ and ‘waxing’ would take on such great importance in my life! However, I have now learned when a mare is getting ready to foal…these terms become extremely significant!
From today’s report, it appears I am still on target to foal ‘sometime next week’…but nature is nature. I’ll keep you posted! As I’ve said so many times before, this is all so NEW TO ME! Thank you for your support!
This morning, my pals at BARN 55 wanted to send ME some fun….THINKING OF YOU…photos. They are wearing my NEW T-SHIRT and sending ME lots of hugs, warm greetings, and positive thoughts. They always do…but as it is getting closer and closer to my foaling experience….they really wanted to reinforce these thoughts and tell ME how much they care, think of ME, and MISS ME!
I miss you guys too….all of you….more than I can say!
So many stakes races are running the next few days…it is very busy! As always, I wish all of the horses running and their connections a wonderful time and lots of success! I’ll be really tuning into the Grade 1 races running at Santa Anita on Saturday and the Gotham for 3 year olds at Aqueduct. Focussing on racing over the weekend will not only be fun, but it will help to keep my mind busy!
With Love,
Hugs to All~(Thank you, everyone, for thinking of ME!)
Z
On a very serious note….. A special hug and prayer is needed for one of my other BARN 55 pals, Dr. Leslie… who checked in on ME often when I was in California. She had a skiing accident yesterday and all of our prayers are with her at this time!
Robyn Mullhausen
Sounds like Motherhood is just around the corner. I pray you and all of your pals at Lane’s End are safe in this scary weather.

Dear Zenny
I knew Lanes End would take care of all their Equines very well.
Storms are common in that part of the country so I
Am sure all of the barns are very storm proof. We build
Our barns in Houston to be hurricane proof. Thanks so much
To Lanes End for taking all of this special care of
All your precious Equines.

Queen Z, so excited, from a former horse owner, you are very close to foaling I was hoping you would make it to my Bday, but I think that the 12th is to far from now. Cant wait to see baby pic’s.

I WONT BE RESTING WELL UNTIL i HEAR THE STORMS ARE OUT OF KENTUCKY THEY ARE SHOWING WARNINGS HERE IN SEATTLE FOR CHURCHILL DOWNS SO SCARY ARE THE BARNS STORM PROOF ??? SEEMS UNDERGROUND SHELTERS WOULD BE WORTH THE COST! LOVE YOU ZENNY ON PINS AND NEEDLES WITH THE WEATHER AND THE BABY WATCH!!
Debbie G/Kentucky
The storms are all gone from Louisville and the Lexington area, Rhonda. All we got in Lexington was heavy rain and there was nothing on the news here about any damage in Louisville, so I’m sure it came out OK. The storms are in far eastern Kentucky now. Not everyone in Kentucky was as lucky. I just saw where the town of West Liberty has multiple fatalities and was essentially leveled. I agree with you about underground shelters. I don’t know if it’s feasible or not, but it sounds like a great idea.
Sarah Powell, Clemson, SC
Prayers and positive thoughts to Dr. Leslie and all who are in the path of the storms. So far we have escaped with only rain but tornado watches all around. Been glued to the weater channel all day watching KY and our area. Hope everyone is safe! I have a feeling it’s going to be a long weekend waiting and pacing!

How fun, all of Zenny’s GF have delivered !!!
Kelly/Wisconsin.
Zenyatta, like everyone else; I am also worried about the weather. I hope Lane`s End does everything they can to ensure the saftey of the horses and staff. I just can`t wait for the news of your foal comming into this world. I pray for you both to be safe and healthy. I don`t post to often but love to read all the posts. I do really miss you racing, being a mommy is important to. This might take everones mind of of these storms just alittle. I watched you win the 2009 BC. I thought that was amazing, even if it was on TV. That was the year I watched Dreamer for the first time, before the BC I believe. After the Breeder`s Cup I was really totally had goosebumbs. The movie about a mare winning the BC and then in real life a mare winning the BC, first time ever. Amazing I thought. You are amazing! I wanted to do something, so I made a screen name. It is zenyatta1bcc@aol.com. I get news of you on my face book page. This is a real e-mail address, so If any one wants to e-mail me from these posts thats ok. I know this is a very loving forum. I might not respond right away, but I will respond. I hope everyone stays safe and warm. I hope I did not bore anyone. p.s. I am thinking pink
Debbie G/Kentucky
I think that’s a great idea, Kelly!

I really, truly have been calm through your entire pregnancy, Zenny, but having experienced tornados, I was just about climbing the walls today watching all the storms on the weather channel. I kept telling myself Lane’s End would keep everyone there safe and sound and it sounds like things are ok there. But, my heart breaks for all the people who lost their lives and for the ones that lost their homes, businesses and life as they knew it.
But, you shared exciting news with us today and I’m sure it brought smiles all around the country and the world. I’m still calm, but that could change after the weekend.
It seemed strange to me to hear about someone in Ca. having a skiing accident. That usually happens here in Colorado. I pray Dr. Leslie will heal quickly from her injuries.
@ AnnMaree..That was a very informative, well written article you wrote. Please let us know you are ok in Nashville.
@ Susan in Tn….I’m sorry to hear about your daughter’s accident, but happy she was ok. How did you fare in the storms? Is everything ok with Chester and Friends, too?
@ Keta..I really enjoyed seeing the videos of “Eskend’s” foals. Really made me smile during this stressful day.
@ All going to Santa Anita tomorrow. I hope you all get to meet up and have a great time. I know you will give Mike a rousing show of support for each race he rides. And cheer hard for Mr. Commons, too.
Keta
Thanks Marty
They were definitely cute
Have a great weekend

Please post as soon as you can tomorrow, Dottie, so that we know everyone is safe. I see it’s going to be another scary night in Kentucky. Stay safe!

Good luck Queen Z…we’re all waiting patiently to see your beautiful “Zennybabba”….sending love and and safe delivery wishes, xoxo

Dear Zennie, I read that the storms have passed your town unscathed and I very greatful for this, I must have checked the weather channel a hundred times tonight.
I started a thread on the TVG Community asking folks to try to name your foaling day and time. I told them you were waxing and I hope I have started to get those folks into even more than a frenzy than before! I figure, why not get everyone in on the excitment?
My guess is Monday night at 2pm. (I really don’t care if I am right, I just hope all goes smoothly!) Good night sweet girl. Say good night to Tasty for me.
Liz Gooch
I am hoping you bring your wonderful baby into this world on March 10. It is my mom’s birthday and she is such a huge racing fan. She and I have gone to about 20 Derbies together and a few separately. Good Luck, momma-to-be!

Queen Z….so glad to hear the bad weather has passed and you are safe. It’s so close to foaling time!
Susan in Tn: What kind of accident did your daughter have? I am praying she is fine.
She is a caring young lady, must have gotten that from her mother!

Well, Zenny and Tasty, it appears that our prayers for this round of storms to bypass you have been answered. Sleep snuggly. I’m still thinking really PINK. I will be stunned if you have a colt. Either way, he/she will be adorable. Love you always.

Dear Zenny,
What a day! I’m so glad to read from the folks in the Lexington area that the bad weather has moved on, and that nothing awful happened in your area (thanks Debbie G!!!). I had just realized that there was a new post when we started having thunderstorms here (nothing bad) so I’ve been “unplugged” for a quite a while. How exciting that you are continuing to show the signs of impending delivery! Auntie Judy has graciously acknowledged that you might not make it til March 9th and reiterated what we ALL want – a safe and healthy Mom and foal. I’m sure that there will be a gazillion “hits” on this site during the weekend as we all come back to peek for any special announcements.
Love from your Ohio friend, Sandy
Prayers for all those lost as a result of this terrible weather and for those who may be starting over from “square one.” Safe trip to Ann and Jerry, and best wishes for a speedy recovery to Dr. Leslie.

I have been thinking about you all day beautiful lady and praying that everyone at Lane’s End, the Lexington area and throughout the mid-west comes through this latest storm surge unharmed. I know that the wonderful Lane’s End crew will give you, Tasty and all of the horses the best of care. It is wonderful to hear some more details of the continued changes in your body. Each change bringing you closer to the birth of your foal. I will be waiting with breathless anticipation for some news next week. I hope Ann and Jerry are on their way and maybe Dottie too!! To All Of My Z-friends,
As we have all been thinking and posting about dams, foals and sires, I wanted to share a wonderful story with you. It was written as a letter to Penny Chenery by Linda R. a special friend and colleague of mine. I hope you enjoy it!
Dear Mrs. Chenery –
I’m writing to share a “happily ever after” story about one of Secretariat’s last foals.
Secret of the Sea, by Secretariat out of Lyphka – Lyphard, was foaled May 1, 1990 at Darley Stud. He raced nine times from three to five, starting his career under Darley’s colors at Arlington Park in the fall of his three-year-old year. Over the next two years he ran at Keeneland, Churchill, Calder, at one point being claimed from Darley, and finally ending his racing career with a win at Tampa Bay on February 2, 1995. I’m told that he was entered in an allowance race at Tampa later that month but came up with a hot tendon the morning of the race and was summarily retired. Since he had been gelded, his then-owners decided to keep him as a pet and pleasure horse.
I’m told that Secret of the Sea followed his owners as they moved to various locations around the country, at one point living in Montana. It was there that he stepped through some heavy ice in a stream one winter and suffered what must have been a horrific injury to his right front leg, judging from the extensive scarring that extends from just below the knee on down into the coronary band. As a result, he’s about 85% – 90% sound.
Fast forward to Labor Day weekend, 2011. My husband and I have a 42-acre hay farm in Shavano Valley, about ten miles due west of Montrose, Colorado. We have five horses, three Quarter Horse geldings and two little Mustang mares. One of our regular hay customers, Diana, boards horses up near Ridgway, about 25 miles south of us. I was in the barn when she arrived to pick up some hay on that Saturday morning; I looked out to see that my husband, Scott, was on top of one of the hay stacks in the stack yard, about 50 yards way, removing the tarp. I started walking toward the stack yard to see if I could help when I heard him say to Diana, “You’ll have to talk to her about that.” My first thought (shame on me) was, “Good grief, I wonder what he’s getting me into now?” I walked up to the stack yard fence to see what Diana needed and she said, “Do you know anyone who would want one of the last sons of Secretariat?”
Now, I have to provide a bit of background in order for the depth of the impact of that question to be fully understood. I have been horse crazy since I first drew breath; I guess I get it from my dad who grew up farming with horses and mules in West Texas and did a hitch in the horse cavalry at Fort Clark, Texas, from 1936 to 1939. Growing up in the Central Valley of California, my two brothers thought horses were okay but my dad and I were co-conspirators when it came to anything equine. My mom never knew what we were going to drag home from the Friday night horse sale. Looking back, it was a wonderful way to grow up – how many ponies we broke to ride with my dad holding the pony’s halter in one hand and lifting me up onto its back with the other arm. Throughout my life, I competed in gymkhanas, English and western pleasure, dressage and combined training and spent countless hours just riding bareback down the side of the road. I also loved horse racing.
It became a tradition for my horse crazy friends and me to gather at my folks’ house to watch the Triple Crown races with my dad every year. I remember every one of the races in the 1973 series like it was yesterday. The call, “Secretariat is moving like a tremendous machine!” as he left the field behind in the Belmont is forever etched in my memory and never fails to catch at my heart when I hear it. We were all on our feet, screaming our lungs out for the sheer joy of seeing Secretariat literally fly home in that astonishing manner. I’ve recently been rereading Bill Nack’s definitive work on Secretariat’s life and I came across his description of his reaction to that same event: “I bolted up the press box stairs with exultant shouts and there yielded a part of myself to that horse forever.” Yes, I know – it was the same for me.
Summer 1976 – one of those horse crazy friends, Debbie, and I made a pilgrimage from California to Kentucky specifically to see Secretariat and see him we did! A couple of cute little horse crazy 23-year-old girls, we managed to talk ourselves into all sorts of places, including Calumet which was not open to the general public at the time. It was quite the grand adventure but the undeniable high point of the entire trip was our visit with the Big Red Horse. The groom’s name was Clay and he was more than gracious, encouraging us to get close and pet Secretariat. He was one of the few stallions that we actually got to touch; what a sweet temperament he had and he SO loved to pose for the camera! Deb and I visited Secretariat again in 1985 and then in 1991 my husband and I stopped at Claiborne during a trip to Oshkosh, WI, so that I could visit my hero’s grave.
Then in the fall of 2010, Debbie and I made a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Kentucky to experience the World Equestrian Games, and of course to visit Claiborne Farm once more, to honor our long departed hero. The first stall on the left was occupied by another stallion – Pulpit, I think – and we admired him as his groom brought him out for the group to see, but Deb and I were both lost in our memories of that first trip so many years ago when Clay led Secretariat out of the dark barn aisle into the bright sunlight of that summer morning in July of 1976, and we fell hopelessly in love with that perfect glowing red horse, forever.
So — back to the present: “Do you know anyone who would want one of the last sons of Secretariat?” I thought Dianna was pulling my leg but after a few minutes of conversation it became clear that she really was asking a legitimate, straight forward question. The thought ran through my head, “Of all the gin joints in all the world, she walks into mine.” She said that Secret of the Sea had been boarded at her place for the last two years and the owners had not visited him more than a couple of times during that time. She said the owners had e-mailed her two weeks before, saying that they couldn’t afford to keep him boarded anymore and if she couldn’t find anyone who wanted to adopt him, they were going to have Secret put down given that he was 21 years old, not really sound and getting harder to maintain as he aged. I was appalled, as was Diana, but she had diligently begun seeking a new home for him. I told Diana that she was talking to probably the only person on the planet who has a locket with three hairs from Secretariat’s mane in it that I still wear, and if one of his sons needed a retirement home she had found it. What’s all this hay ground good for if not to support the son of the king?
And so the next morning, Sunday, September 4, 2011, Secret of the Sea, the son of the king, came home to me. I didn’t think the name “Secret” suited him so I started calling him “Strider”, after a character in Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings books. Strider was the name that the son of the king went by when he was running around in the forests of Middle Earth, before his true identity was revealed. This Strider knows his new name and comes from across the pasture when I call him.
In the days following his arrival at our farm I made direct contact with the owners and arranged to have ownership of Strider legally and irrevocably transferred to me. They were actually very pleased and relieved that the horse had found the right home. We’ll never know if they would have made good on the threat to put him down because Strider is safe with me now.
The accompanying photo is of Strider the day we brought him home. We had just given him a bath so his coat looks a bit darker than it really is – he truly has that glowing red coat like his daddy had. His head belongs to his mother but from the ears back he bears a striking resemblance to his sire, albeit at 15.2 he’s a more compact version. The photo doesn’t show that the shape of his neck is very similar; his shoulder and hip angles are all Secretariat. He even has that unruly mane that refuses to stay all on one side.
Looking through the record of Strider’s racing career, it’s easy to second guess decisions that were made nearly two decades ago. If this or that had been done differently perhaps he would have excelled and been more successful on the track. On the other hand, if he had been successful back then he wouldn’t now be looking at me from the first stall on the right as I walk into our barn every morning, here in Montrose. Funny how things work out.
Strider will be 22 this May. He has a home where he is loved and cared for, where he has buddies to hang around the pasture with and where he will stay for the rest of life, happily ever after. It’s the least I can do for a son of Secretariat.
My own mom turned 92 last December and I know how hard traveling is on her, but if you should ever get the notion to visit Strider, please let me know. We’d love to share his “happily ever after” with you, in person.
Best regards,
I will post a picture of Strider aka Secret of the Sea on Zenyatta’s Facebook site.

All,
There are some great sites to start following the trail to the Triple Crown. Of course the Blood-Horse has our wonderful Steve Haskin’s with his Derby Dozen. You can find it just by going to the Bloodhorse.com and then another site I enjoy is Triple Crown Insider with Jon Siegel and Joel Cunningham. If you follow the link and watch the video, then you can scroll to the bottom of the page and see any archieved episodes.
