Happy Friday Dear Friends,
I have always been one to enjoy an early afternoon nap! I was on a very definite schedule when I was in training at BARN 55. MY JOHN used to have the entire barn area be completely peaceful after our morning training hours and 10:30 a.m. breakfast. This way all of the horses could totally rest, relax, and nap. He would have the fans turned on so we would have lots of fresh air circulating and the entire environment was completely tranquil. This is a habit I have continued to enjoy since I’ve been at Lane’s End. I must say, I love my naps!
When at Barn 55, this was the time MY JOHN would walk around and just observe us while we were resting! It was sweet to see him always ‘peeking in on ME’ as he walked around the shed row and made sure everyone was A-OK! Here at the farm, when I’m napping in the paddock, TASTY watches over ME to be sure I’m safe and happy. I do the same thing for her when she is resting. We have truly developed quite a bond. It is all so very special!
FRIENDSHIP is such a wonderful thing….and a TRUE FRIEND is something to be cherished!
Amid all of our other activities over the weekend, TASTY and I want to keep up on the great racing. The Fairgrounds, Gulfstream, Oaklawn, Santa Anita and Aqueduct have some very contentious fields running over the next few days. Several of the races will help to determine more about the 3 year old picture. Breeders’ Cup Sprint Champion, AMAZOMBIE, is running at Santa Anita and this should be one “fast” race. Good Luck to him and MY MIKIE who will be on board.
Don’t forget, MY MIKIE is getting close to win #5000! We have to keep current on his countdown as well! There is so much each day for us to do! This is really very positive as it keeps our minds busy as we progress through the next few weeks!
Enjoy the weekend of racing…relax, have fun, and here’s wishing you lots of WINNERS!
With Love,
Hugs to all~(Isn’t TASTY “TOO CUTE” in this photo!)

Dear Z, TT and friends –
.
Do we have some kindhearted and strong minded Z’ers in Montana? There are horses in great need there, and this is heartbreaking:

This is so sad. Some horses have already died. No one, Glacier County, Montana sheriff’s office has not stepped up nor has the tribal law enforcement stepped up to see that the horses get help. The land owners have not agreed to have horses on their land. The people in the area have apparently known that the horses were not being fed and didn’t step up. Now that we know about this, maybe some of us can step up and help if we find out who to send help to. Thanks Happy Harriet for bringing this to our attention.

So hard to read about these sad cases of horses left to starve. Hope we can find out where to send monetary help. Hugs, JB

I wish I lived in CA too. That would be awesome to have dinner with Mike Smith. I only met him briefly at Zenyatta’s party, but he was so nice and charming. Oh well, I’m busy on the 10th anyway. I have tickets to a drag show! LOL I hope one of our CA Dumplings wins and tells us all about it!

Our wonderful QUEEN—get in all those beauty naps now—your foal will keep you busy, in a most wonderful high hoof kind of way! And thanks for that delightful Super Saver filly video–I really was LOL!!! A “gymnast” indeed!
@all: I am catching up on the week’s diaries: @ Cynthia H first of all, your tributes to your dear friend have been very touching to read, and they also made me smile, a little. A big virtual hug to you here. :-) @Karen Gogue, your recent post to Z(I think on #440) was great! @Linda M your card to/for Kari—wow, so poignant and lovely.
@Trina, of course just love(d) your recent b/d poems: Lisa, Sharon Call and Annie B come to mind. If I missed others, happy birthday to all!! (And I “hit” 68 in October if anyone is counting!) @Linda in NJ: hello!
@Pacing JAG: soon the pacing will be over and your new worry will be about the midnight feedings!
@All, I too have been thinking about our family here: I watched the first few minutes of the Grammys a couple of weeks ago (usually not my thing :) ) to see what would be said about Whitney Houston. LL Cool J started out by saying (in essence) there was no way around it, they had lost a member of their family, and then he said a prayer. Now I know in that Grammy family most of them probably knew or had met Whitney, whereas only a fortunate few here had actually met Kari. However, that did not matter did it? As many of us have said we cried buckets of tears for her, a member of our own Zenyatta family. I’m even tearing up as I write this. It has been so wonderful to get to learn more about her through her daughter. And it made me smile to know that Kari had actually met AND touched OUR QUEEN. Wonderful! People I have told this story to have commented on how touching it is and how powerful these social networks can be. I feel ours is powerful in the same way that Zenyatta is and I am very grateful for the new Dumpling friends I have made-some in person–and on this site. As has been said, many have shared some very personal things here. Zenyatta, you are our therapist! Thanks for all your sage advice!

Dear Anne, Lovely post. Thank you for mentioning the birthday poems, and I wish you and Rod a very happy anniversary next weekend! We will miss having you with us at SA, but I’m sure you’ll have a splendid time celebrating in Las Vegas and still manage to stay on foal watch! Best wishes!.

Anne-Good to see your post. You don’t visit us often enough.

@ALL, Hi again: I now want to say something about Downton Abbey. :-) I too saw the finale and thought it wrapped up a little too neatly: which means of course there will be problems to deal with next season. I read –I think in that great literary tome TV Guide–that Lady Cora’s mother from America will be arriving, to be played by none other than Shirley MacLaine(sp?) ! Remember Lady Mary speaking of her “grandmother in America” when she thought she would being going there for while–to perhaps meet a cowboy, per her father? So that visit is sure to add some spice to the goings on. Can’t wait, but guess we’ll have to. Sigh.
@all who will be at Santa Anita this weekend or next: have a wonderful time! Can’t get there this time and next weekend we will be in Vegas for our anniversary. Special attention will be paid to the Big Cap, of course. I will be on the alert for any Z foal news!! Good luck to all in today’s races! :-)

Dear Anne from Paramount, CA:
I read the same article. Can you imagine the spirited barbs we can expect between Shirley M. and Maggie S. Should be a riot. Always loved both of these actresses. Read Season Three set to start in September. I’m sure we’re in for a lot more “drama”. Hugs, JB

Ann and Judy – Downton Abbey is sooo good. I too can’t wait to see and hear the sparring between Shirley McC and Maggie Smith. That’s reason enough to watch the program!! My plan is to be at Santa Anita on Big Cap day!

A Birthday Poem for Elaine
(February 25, 2012)
Our dear Elaine
Did here proclaim
She’d be delighted
If Z’s foal should deign
To arrive today
On her own birthday.
But should the foal
Inside Z stay
Till a later day
And this one small wish
From the heart
Of our dear Elaine remain
Unrequited,
We hope Elaine
Will still be able to say
That she for her part
Is having a super birthday!
Happy Birthday, Elaine, and many more!

What an amazing girl Awesome Maria is. She danced and pranced and put on such a wonderful show in the ring; it could only be compared to Queen Z.
She then pranced onto the track and decimated her competition which included Royal Delta and Groupie Doll. Did she sneak into Lane’s End to taking dancing lessons from Zenyatta? The queen would definately approve.

To sign of the times:
Yesterday there were three stakes for the fillies/mares at Gulfstream. And you should see how some of the horses were acting in the ring–they weren’t demure little girls anymore. As Steve Haskin put it the “girls [have] gone wild”. Look out boys, I don’t think you can handle them. LOL
Somehow, the horses must be communicating to each other since Zen’s win in the Breeders Cup Classic. And they don’t think they are second tier to the boys anymore.
Incidentally, why not have a triple tiara for fillies like they do in South Africa?
Julie DuVall / Ontario, CA
There have been several different Triple Tiaras in the U.S. but none of them really stuck. The “old” Filly Triple Crown was the Acorn, the Mother Goose and the Coaching Club American Oaks (at 1 mile, 1 1/8 miles and 1 1/2 miles respectively) all at Belmont. There was also an alternate Filly Triple consisting of the Kentucky Oaks, Black-Eyed Susan and CCA Oaks. I think they tried to do a Triple Tiara several years ago that ended with the Alabama at Saratoga but again, it just didn’t draw much attention.
Personally, I’m partial to the original filly triple … I’m still upset that the CCA Oaks was cut back in distance (and don’t get me started on the Jockey Club Gold Cup!) :)

Dear Zenny,
It would be wonderful to see a photo of you standing sentry guard over TASTY.
Must be hard these days getting up. So loved the recent photos of Rachel’s
young colt. He is such a character, grazing laying down. Guess young foals get
tired standing and grazing. Love the photos of how he is being handled so lovingly
so he will respond to humans.
