Good Morning,
Tasty and I were recently visiting in the paddock and concluded we each have a great deal to learn about becoming a MOM . The entire process of having a foal and then raising it to become a healthy and talented race horse is rather interesting. Since it is the first foal for each of us, we decided it is something we really want to prepare for so we can do our very best!
I’ve heard with humans, they have birthing and childcare classes plus all kinds of books and videos to prepare people to become parents. Since we are horses, TASTY and I tried to figure out how we could learn more about all of this process that would help us in ‘our world’.
In our quest to do so, we asked our pals here at the farm for some advice. It just so happens that a friend of ours, FOR ROYALTY, recently foaled a filly by Super Saver. Her farm captured the video and shared it with us! How sweet of them! This way we were able to have the opportunity to see just how ‘special these first few moments after foaling can be…for both the mare and the baby.’
Watch the video here.
One thing I’m truly beginning to realize now is that becoming a MOM is going to be so much FUN on so many levels!
Thank you for sharing this clip with us, For Royalty! Just think….the foal Class of 2012 will be fascinating to follow!
Please enjoy your day!
With Love,
Hugs to All~(Newborn foals are TOO CUTE!)

This photo of Zenyatta and Tasty is just the best…… It would be wonderful if it could be purchased. They are precious together…. And that video. Thank you so much Dottie for a preview of what may be forthcoming…… very soon. Love the name Back Flip, Royal Flip or maybe “Head over Heels” Too cute ( to copy a well-loved phrase).
I saw some news about a super gentleman getting ready for his races….. one of my favoriteshttp://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/67617/nine-year-old-awesome-gem-prepares-for-return. Enjoy.

I goofed. Will try again. Sorry. Hope this one takes. Otherwise it’s in the Bloodhorse internet article….http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/67617/nine-year-old-awesome-gem-prepares-for-return

Wow, he is 9 years old and to race. That is a little unusual isn’t it? I wish him the best.

TB go and go and go and go and go; it is a misnomer that their careers are over at
3 and 4; Awesome Gem is in this best years.
Terry Crow
Awesome Gem, indeed, improved with age. However, competing at a high level after the age of five is problematic.

Greetings!
You mentioned in a previous post that Ebby appears to be almost ready to race. Judging from the recent video I agree.
I posted this on dairy #442. Just in case you didn’t see it I am posting it again.
I am under the impression you visit Barn 55, so I am just wondering if you may have heard if John MIGHT point Ebby to a race on Santa Anita Derby day? I guess what I am thinking is that maybe if there is a race for a beginner like Ebby John would definitely consider entering her if she is ready.
I would love to come out to see the Derby event and Ebby’s first race. Flights are so much cheaper if you can plan ahead. Although after today’s news of the soaring gasoline prices I don’t know. Lol.
I just thought I would ask. Thanks.
Karen Gogue /Nanny-Granny in a marshmallow watch coma ♥
Hi Linda,
I don’t see where Ebby has been nominated – not for her first race, I doubt it. But maybe someone with more know- how would like to answer that. I went to calracing.com and looked up the nominations for those races. John does have a couple in nomination though.
Linda Edwards in NJ
Oh, I didn’t realize horses had to be nominated. Now, I didn’t mean that Ebby would enter the SA Derby race, but I was hoping she would be in another race that day.
sharon in seattle
Karen G – you are too funny – nanny-granny in a marshmallow watch coma!! Love it!
Terry Crow
You are correct. Horses only have to be entered in advance for stakes races. For a regular race, they are entered a few days in advance. Trainers get what is called the Condition Book, which lists the qualifications or restrictions for future races and the dates of those contests. Good trainers know how to interpret the book and enter their horses in races in which they have the best chance according to the conditions. This does not apply, of course, to claiming races. An example of this can be found in the racing form at the top of the entries for the race. I do not believe that E will run before the Hollywood Park meet, and maybe not then. She has had all of her workouts at Hollywood Park, an artificial surface, and the dirt at Santa Anita may not be to her or John’s liking. We shall see.

Terry,
Thank you for this information and your insight into the workings of horse racing. There is so much to learn and so many knowledgeable , generous people to learn from. Very appreciated.

Hi Terry: Thanks for the info. I see. She’ll probably be entered at HP. That gives me more time.

I would love to know what race Ebby is being pointed towards.

Sweet Z; You and Tasty are Fabulous together as Two Heads are Better than One sometimes. Thank you for the video with Super Savers filly. Now that’s what I call a good ROLL IN THE HAY! ha Such agility. I laughed so loud; adorable at the same time.
I will be estatic when I see your foal!! You will be a natural loving mama too, I just feel it. Along the way I hope you can teach your foal your dance!

Here is the Article from Bloodhorse magazine and St. Liam’s Accident in 2006;
a good description and the fact it was truely an accident as the handler was a
25 year employee at LE. He really knew how to handle stallions.

How sad! These freak accidents are so unfair. After racing his heart out and then to have something like this happen. Too bad.
Terry Crow
Agree. Native Diver’s case is even sadder. He was still on top of his game when he succumbed to colic.

I love this photo of you and Tasty, Too Cute!! That video of For Royalty and her very
pretty filly is quite something. What a beautiful face she has, she will be a looker. I
have never seen a foal do something like that, you know she is ok or this video would never have been posted. She stood pretty good for a while on her first try!! HUGS TO ALL…

Jerry Moss leaving the California Horse Racing Board.

Trina Nagele in So Cal
Quote from article:
“I think after being around here for eight years, that’s long enough,” Moss said after the meeting. “I’m feeling good now, and we’re planning to do quite a bit of traveling in the next year. Being on the board takes a lot of time and study. I didn’t feel I could give it everything I needed to.”
I imagine the “quite a bit of traveling” that Jerry refers to may include many trips to Lane’s End…
Marty R / Colorado
Trina;
I thought the same thing after reading Mr. Moss’ comment. Great minds, I guess. LOL
I so enjoy all the poems you create. You have a wonderful talent.
Terry Crow
It is sad for California racing fans that Mr. Moss is leaving the CHRB. This body has done its best to muck up the racing scene, with Mr. Moss often being the lone dissenter.
Trina Nagele in So Cal
Thank you, Terry, for this info. I didn’t know, but now that I do, I want to give special thanks to Mr. Moss for his service. It must have been very frustrating for him, and for dear Ann too. Best wishes to them both for pure happiness in all the coming years.
haley
What about the name Bernazenny?
Marty R / Colorado
Haley, That’s a good name. I don’t think it’s been suggested before. I’m sure Mr. and Mrs. Moss will come up with a really good name for Zenyatta’s foal. I could be surprised, but I’m not expecting there to be a contest. It is fun to think of names, though.
Lisag in Texas
I agree, Ann and Jerry have their own thing when it comes to names, and I like it.

Musketier is 10…he is coming back this yr too
Max
Musketier is a wonderful horse. He runs out of Woodbine. His trainer says that he just gets better each year and will keep racing for as long as possible. Love those stories.

Love those wonderful *old* geldings! John Henry raced and won at nine and one of my latter day favorites, Better Talk Now, raced as an older fellow also.
Terry Crow
I am surprised, but happily so. His connections obviously feel that he can still go. He will probably never compete in a claiming race, but I hope he doesn’t embarrass himself like Lava Man did.

Loved the card and love you – you are the sweetest (Dottie too)!!
I think your baby should be called Zenny’s Dini. Can’t wait for the birth. I hope they film the foal for us to see your sweet baby once they know all is well with you and baby. I hope you and Tasty continue to do well and have a safe birthing experience. Love your forever friend, Michelle

Dear Zenny, you and Tasty in earnest conversation about obviously weighty matters. What a perfectly captured picture. Thanks so much to Mathea. It will be a treasured jewel.
Zenny, I’ve been dragging around a little disappointment since we learned that Havre De Grace will be racing at Oaklawn in the Azeri on March 17th, instead of in the New Orleans Ladies at the Fairgrounds, so much closer to home. It has been so thrilling to have her wintering in New Orleans. Got to see her gallop one morning by planning a strategic work trip to New Orleans with a coincidental 6:00 a.m. arrival with absolutely no work yet to do. I just happened to be in the Fairgrounds neighborhood and there she was in her splendid early morning glory. What a graceful beaut. Might have to work out a road trip to Hot Springs, Ark. on St. Patrick’s day to watch her in action.
Zenny, I was so lucky to see you race at Churchill Downs in the BC, in my opinion, your most magnificent race, and I got to see you race in a romp at Oaklawn in your second Appleblossom. You’ve given me memories and thrills to last a couple of lifetimes. Thanks, girl. Hoping for joyous foalings for you and Tasty.

Well, Z, we’re closing out another day, so that means we are one day closer. I notice that more and more new friends are joining us as we proceed through our foal watch. That is a good thing. Good evening Zenyatta & Tasty……I just love the picture of you two, you can see from the picture you mama’s are true friends, so special. I haven’t written in a while but I read the diary posts all the time. The video of For Royalty and her filly was just adorable, thanks for sharing that. Sweet Mama Z, I can hardly wait until your big day, I believe the world is on pins and needles waiting for your 1st baby/foal. I have one request I was wondering if someone at Lanes End could take a full body picture of you and Tasty so we can see the size of your belly bumps at this stage…..”pretty please”. Hugs & Kisses to you………sweet dreams beautiful one!

Hi Zenny, you and Tasty are so cute and best friends you truely are. That is a great picture of the two of you.
