HAPPY 90TH BIRTHDAY, MRS. CHENERY!
Good Morning,
What a lovely way to start the day…wishing Mrs. Penny Chenery ALL THE VERY BEST on her 90th BIRTHDAY! From my entire TEAM and all of BARN 55, we would like to send her the warmest wishes and a big HIGH HOOF on her special day!
I was very blessed to meet Mrs. Chenery when she came to Hollywood Park in October, 2010. She was there to present the Trophy for the Ladies’ Secret–G1. For this meet, Oak Tree was held at Hollywood Park. In this race, I was competing to remain undefeated and for my 19th victory in a row. It was quite a day! Mrs. Chenery wanted to come and see ME in the paddock and be there for the event. She commented to the press that “SHE WANTED TO SEE ME DANCE”! She later told them, “I WAS IN HER PRESENCE AND SHE WAS IN COMPLETE COMMAND”. (Blush, Blush)
When I WON…the fans went WILD! This victory now highlighted my career record at 19-0! I remember these moments…all of them…so vividly. During the Winners’ Circle ceremonies, Mrs. Chenery was absolutely lovely. She posed for countless photos and joined in many interviews with THE MOSS’ and MY JOHN. Her comments about ME, my racing career, and my impact on the sport were glowing!
Can you imagine how PROUD I felt! These gracious remarks about ME coming from the woman who bred, raised, and raced the CHAMPION, SECRETARIAT! What a complete honor!
During the next several months, Mrs. Chenery created the Vox Populi Award to honor the HORSE in our industry who did so much during the year to captivate the fans! She personally selected ME to be the first honoree. This season, a committee of professionals in our industry along with the fans voting determined the winner. Rapid Redux was honored and presented with this year’s AWARD!
For all of your years of total devotion and dedication to our SPORT, the Thoroughbred Industry, and the entire breed of THROUGHBRED HORSES, Mrs. Chenry, we truly want to THANK YOU, HONOR YOU, and WISH YOU GREAT JOY on your special DAY! From the bottom of our hearts and souls…WE ADORE YOU!
HAPPY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
With Love,
Hugs to All~(Happy Weekend Everyone! Enjoy RACING!)

Holy Bull S. GIII
Beaten today, comes in second.
Especially Horses / California
That is Hansen beaten today. He stumbled out of the gate, I hope he comes out of the race ok and we don’t hear about an injury that takes him out of contention for his three year old season. A very nice win for Algorithm.

Algorithm wins the Holy Bull;
Bad break and recovered, but
Hansen 22 flat for a quarter may
Have done him in.
Great win for Bernie and his boy!!!
Especially Horses / California
Those Bernardini’s sure are proving to be something special. Algorithm looks like he can only get better as they stretch out! Who knows, maybe Bernie will have an unbeaten colt walk into the starting gate on May 5.
Doreen in CT
Congratulations to Algorithm.
Hansen looked fine win he was jogging back. The 22 second quarter definitely did him in. IMHO, he was rushed after he stumbled when there wasn’t a need to rush him. Hopefully, he won’t pick up any bad habits after today’s race. He’s still young and gaining more experience each time he races.

Dear Doreen in Ct.:
Bernie’s other Boy in the Holy Bull, Consortium, was bumped badly at the start. Hope he and all the others came out of the race OK. Congrats to Algorithm. Hugs, JB

I guess Hansen was a litte green at getting out of the gate.
Hope they are all OK, too.
Eveline / Maryland.
Doreen, in an interview Ramon said that Hansen scared himself breaking unbalanced, and that made him take off. Our Tapit colt is exactly the same, they are such overachievers that relaxing is hard for them. Hopefully it will come with more experience.

Dear Sign, Especially Horses, Ingrid Arnone and Dawn C.:
You’re all so welcome. Glad you enjoyed it as much as I did. Love and Hugs, JB

Sorry, meant “when” not “win”.

Abigail, I’m still figuring out how to navigate my way thru the new diary format and so missed your post of Secretariat’s last race yesterday. You have just reduced me to tears watching that race again. I stood, close to the rail and the post, soaked and freezing, and watched him come thundering down the stretch. Foolishly, I did not keep any souvenirs of that day and so to see that video was a real treat thank you.
Abigail from Montreal
Oh, Brenda! I’m so glad to have given you a chance to relive this moment. I only wish that I could have been hugging the rail beside you. Love & hugs!
Dawn Conrad / Colorado
Brenda, what a fantastic experience!! I thought of you immediately when I was watching the video and just knew in my heart that you had to have been there. You were so blessed to have been able to see Big Red in person. That is a dream I would have loved to have lived. I know your recent loss must still weigh heavy on your heart, so I just wanted you to know you were in my thoughts!!! Hugs!!!

@ Hi Z Family just got on and had to read to make sure my sweet friend Dawn was OK. You also gave me a scare. I just wanted to say Great racing on today. Watching Oaklawn Park Racing. I saw replay of Hanson. I felt badly but don’t understand why he was in front so soon. I like it better when they come from behind like Zenyatta. I don’t know. I am just learning.
I hope sweet Zenyatta and Tasty had a good day. I love you sweet girl. Hugs and Kisses, Shari XXXOOO
@ To my Z Family. Thank you for making my students feel welcome. They will continue to post while we wait for the Beautiful baby. It is so EXCITING !!!! We all know how Talented Zenyatta was with racing but to have a New Foal. WOW !!!!! Just so Wonderful !!!!
@ Also I am going to do the apple for Zenyatta Day at school : )
Margaret
Apple Day for Z Day at school?! Works for me!
Anytime you can have a good day is reason enough to have a party! There’s too much sadness. So have fun, and have a Tasty Tempation Treat!
Shari Voltz from Ohio
@ Thank you Margaret. I really have fun with my 5th Grade. We play social studies games and the children’s team names are Race Horse names. Example Zenyatta, Uncle Mo, Horse Greely, Mistletoe, No Spin. They love it. The team that wins gets a small piece of candy : )
Dawn Conrad / Colorado
Hello, sweetheart. Sorry you were scared, I’m just fine. I agree with you about Hanson. I thought his fractions were a bit fast for a sloppy track, inside postion. I love hearing from your students. They are all just TOO CUTE!! An apple for Zenyatta Day will be a sweet celebration. I think your Race Horse named teams Social Studies competition is amazing!!! I mean how fun is that!!! You are wonderful my friend. Have a fantastic week. Love and hugs!

R.I.P. Barbaro. It’s hard to believe that it’s been five years since he was taken from us. So sad. I remember it like it was yesterday. I was home from work after having carpal tunnel surgery and I heard it on the news. I cried all day and for days after. I still can’t watch a video of him without crying. He fought so hard and for so long. He’s at the Rainbow Bridge now with all of our four legged friends who have passed on.
@Shari Voltz – I’m with you. I don’t understand why Hansen was out in front so early either. Congratulations to Algorithim.
Sally B. (cherish Z- Wi.)
@all Wow, I returned back home this evening, Sunday to find so much has transpired since I left on Thurs. afternoon. I must continue to read!! But, for all that may be experiencing health issues, I wish you well.

Zenny…your dear Bernie is picking up where his Daddy left off. Passing on that “Something Special”. ….and it appears the girls are lining up for a date with him.
Robin LOVES Zenyatta
Happy Birthday, Mrs. Chenery! I have the absolutely gorgeous portrait of Secretariat and Zenyatta in a beautiful frame and in a place of honor in my home. Two astounding horses for our age! Many thanks to you for all that you have done on behalf of racing and thoroughbreds everywhere. Thank you also to your daughter for the wonderful book. I look at it all the time!
BIG HUGS AND KISSES to our girl! We are all praying for a smooth delivery and happiness as a new mom. Love to Tasty too.

Luck was on HBO for about 2 hours repeated.
What do you all think????
Stephanie in San Diego
Watching Luck with my 83 year old Mother, who want so know “why do you go to places like that”. That’s my fear that people will watch it and not see the beauty and wonderful people that are there. A few great shot of Santa Anita. A little darker then I had hoped.
Not sure it will be one of my regulars each week, but will watch a couple more times to see where it leads.
But…I am seldom with the norm….I’m a little to PG-13 ususally. I will probably be a huge hit.
stephanie from san diego
So many errors in my last post. Please excuse, i was typing while still defending the track and people that attend for the pure joy of the horse to my mother:)
Nancy
Happy Birthday Mrs. Chenery! Did you party with Betty White?? That would be cool.. I think you are special and want to thank you for all you have given to us for all these years. Secretariat was an Idol you gave to us, then now you continue to give us a way to honor our favorite horses. You mean so much to us, thank you all you have done,
And Mis Queen Z are you on foal watch yet? If not now, soon. Have patience, and dont’ be scared, it happens all the time and horses and people do good through this all the time, you will be just fine. I love you and enjoy following your diary..Thanks, Nancy in Virginia

Belated Happy Birthday Mrs. Chenery. You are a fantastic special person. I watch Secretariat everytime it comes on the Starz channel. I have the dvd too, as well as, a dvd of Secretariat’s real footage But, I never get enough of the magnificent creatrue God allowed us all to enjoy. My day is complete, when it starts with Serectariat and Zenyatta. They are both such an inspiration.
Hope you and baby have a great day Zenyatta. You look gorgeous.
Luv ya, MM
Carolyn
One of the highlights of my life was meeting Penny Chenery at Santa Anita when she was autographing posters. :-) Such a thrill. Happy Birthday to her!
Paul
Zenyatta, what an honor it is to be recognized and mentioned by Penny Chenery. What’s even more amazing is that she just had a 90th birthday. The Vox Populi award is a real honor. Seeing as she owned Secretariat, she could easily place you in the same category as him-among the elite of horses. Your brushes with greatness never stop, girl! I don’t think they ever will. Even long after you’re gone, you’ll be alive in everyone’s mind.
