Happy Friday, Everyone!
This is the beginning of a very busy and exciting weekend in sports!
Today, OAKLAWN PARK will open for its’ 108th SEASON of racing. This track offers a very competitive stakes program which will conclude in April with the “Racing Festival of the South”. The “Festival” runs from April 11-14th. This is the week when the Apple Blossom G1…one of my very favorite races…will take place. Also, the Arkansas Derby G1 will run at this time. For years, the horses running contentiously in these events have consistently performed at a high level in stakes programs throughout country.
I’d also like to wish their new announcer, Frank Mirahmadi, all the best. Frank has called races in California and worked in television for the last several years. Frank is replacing their long-time race caller and the voice of Oaklawn for decades, Terry Wallace. Mr. Wallace called over 20,000 Oaklawn races during his career including both of my APPLE BLOSSOM victories. ALL THE BEST to both of these men in their future endeavors!
Jennifer Hoyt is the Media Relations Manager at Oaklawn and I know her very well. She and her husband, Rolly, were assigned by The Breeders’ Cup to ME and BARN 55 to work with MY JOHN on media events during the entire month before the 2010 Breeders’ Cup at Churchill Downs. They did a wonderful job…and we couldn’t THANK THEM enough for all of their help and assistance.
On Saturday, we begin a 3 day weekend of great racing around the country. On top of this, the Pro Football Play-off games take place. This is TOO CUTE! There is a quarterback in Denver named TIM TEBOW. He is really getting people excited about football. From what I am hearing, even people who normally don’t follow the sport are tuning in to watch him play. HMMM…sounds familiar! I keep teasing TASTY that he has the same initials as she does…TT. HOOVES CROSSED for all of the teams to play their very best!
Sunday, the VOX POPULI award will be given to RAPID REDUX during a ceremony which will take place at Santa Anita. This year’s selection was done differently than when I received this award in 2011…..they had the fans vote and be a part of the selection process. Congratulations to Rapid Redux on being this year’s deserving winner of the VOX POPULI AWARD! He had a very exciting year!
Finally, on Monday night, the Eclipse Awards will take place at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. The ceremony will begin at 8 Eastern Time / 5 Pacific …scheduled to last approximately 2 1/2 hours. If you are unable to attend, they will be broadcast live on HRTV. You may also view them on DRF.COM, RTN.TV, and HRTV.COM from the reports we are receiving. The horses nominated in ALL categories are very deserving of this honor…and it will be so exciting to see who wins this year’s HORSE OF THE YEAR! Hmmm….could it be a FILLY or MARE again?
Enjoy all of these great activites! Have a wonderful weekend…and on Monday…may we all take a moment to reflect upon the reason we are having this special holiday to observe the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.
With Love,
Hugs to All~

Kari; My heart was thrilled again with your video of Zenyatta dancing. I had always loved this video I found on U tube with Michael Jackson’s” Rock With You”. I don’t remember how I found it. Zenyatta danced her heart out. Then yours came along. Yours is awesome of our Queen. Thank you!!
Abigail from Montreal
That video with Michael Jackson was made by ME! AND it was inspired by Kari’s “Let’s Groove” that I saw on YouTube.

RIP Scorper, a 6-year old gelding and grandson of Seattle Slew, who broke down in the fourth at Aqueduct. Hopefully Junior Alvarado, who was riding another horse, which stumbled over Scorper, will test negative to injuries to his abdomen. On a positive note, Alan Garcia, who was riding Scorper, tested negative for injuries, and the other horse, Hardshell, seemed uninjured: http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/66965/alvarado-injures-abdomen-in-aqueduct-spill

I am on pins and needles awaiting the Eclips Awards! I would love to see a filly/mare take HOY for the 3rd year! Girl power!
Congrat to Rapid – a well deserved award. All the champions should bask in their glory of a fantastic 2011 and the coming 2012.
I have to agree – moment of the years will be the foals – Rachael and Curlin’s colt and Zenny and Bernie’s baby! I have already seen pictures of the first colt born at Lane’s End this week and he is a cutie! Such and exciting year!
Much love Z,

RIP dear Scorpo– this is so unsettling, and I know the large number of breakdowns is taking a toll on fans’ participation/interest in racing.
Z–I just talked to the owners of a recue facility in New York this morning who are big fans of yours. They LOVED your last race. I’ll NEVER accept it as a loss. Love you always.
Sally B. (cherish Z- Wi.)
I won’t either Barbara, Z was just amazing!!!! My BFF and I were interviewed before & then after the race. (Choosing two older ladies, shivering in the cold: what were they thinking!ha ) Our feelings remained unchanged. She is the greatest racing mare of all time and has done so much for horse racing. Z won in our hearts.

Since Margie from So Cal told us she would be away on her birthday (January 12) and not be back until tonight, I posted a short poem for her at the end of Diary #416, and I am posting a second poem tonight. Happy birthday, Margie!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Second Birthday Poem for Margie
(January 12, 2012)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Margie is a person
Who loves an excursion.
On cruises she loves to go
And certainly to a casino—
She visits Las Vegas at least once a year—
And will be sure not to miss
Spending a day with her sis
At Santa Anita the horses to cheer.
She loves animals in general,
But ask her which ones she’s loved the best,
And it’s my guess,
There are two of her four-legged friends
That will lead the rest.
Some of us are blessed
To meet a special animal,
Quite magical,
With whom we can commune
Soul to soul, completely in tune.
Margie P.
Has twice felt this loving harmony—
Here’s how it first came to be.
Margie’s boss was divorcing,
And this circumstance was forcing
Many a hard decision
During that time of transition.
Because he then was not in a position
His adored golden retriever to house,
For whom he wanted only the best,
He made a special request
And asked if Margie
Could temporarily
His dog’s custodian be,
A dog he would sorely miss,
And whose name was Elvis….
Well, Elvis the singer had sent Margie wild
Ever since she was scarce more than a child—
To twenty-some concerts she’d gone!
She loved his performances to attend,
For every time Elvis would her heart send
To soaring heights
Of endless delight.
And now charming canine,
A bright golden shade of fawn,
And handsome as could be,
Who had been named
Expressly
For the fabulous, famed
Elvis Presley,
Was standing before her in need!
To her
It seemed
Like Destiny
Was indeed
Lending a hand
In something genuinely grand.
It’s not hard to understand
That Margie’s boss had to look no further—
Margie was more than happy to take on the job
Of caring for this canine heart throb.
And Heavenly Fate
Did not deceive her—
That marvelous golden retriever
Became her beloved soul mate.
The gentle retriever boy
Was her ceaseless joy–
He was golden to the core,
Just like the man whose name he bore.
The love in his eyes did gleam
As if backed by many a spangle,
And their spirits did so intertangle
That she dubbed him her Earth Angel.
Together they were a team.
Soon,
The former owner, though still very fond
Of his pup,
Recognized the boon
Of that loving bond.
He was able
To see it from their angle:
The two had bonded heart to heart,
And he declined to break that up.
So as time passed
Margie never by him was asked
With Elvis to part.
The retriever for years made her heart sing
As had the King—
And that’s a marvelous thing,
But this happiness comes at a cost
When the soul mate is lost,
And a parting must come in the end.
Elvis had helped Margie to mend
When she had to face the Big C,
But for Elvis a similar recovery
Was sadly not to be.
His loss took its toll
And left a big hole
In her heart,
Which still does smart.
Margie to this day for him does grieve,
But she got from grief some reprieve
The day that she met Z
And saw with her own eyes
Another Angel in disguise.
Margie found more of love’s light
Shining bright
In the benevolent gaze
Of Zenyatta,
Who seemed to look with X-rays
Or supernatural vision
Into her soul
In full cognition
Of Margie’s spiritual condition.
From that special day
Of mutual recognition,
Margie took away
Another joy that with her will always stay.

OOPS—There is an “a” missing—that line should read: “And now a charming canine…”

Happy Birthday Margie! I hope this new year brings you joy.
Rosemary McCauley So. Cal.
Trina – lovely poem. I know what it’s like to lose a belovec four-legged friend. I have four dogs who share my home. I refer to my four dogs the International Kennel Club because two are Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (Charlie and Reba), one Italian Greyhound, who was born and bred in Russia (Mia) and one Chinese Crested, not the hairless variety, but the powderpuff variety (Erica). Erica’s littermate, who was the hairless variety (Cujo) passed away two years ago. Cujo was my son’s dog. Cujo was quite famous in the small community where my son lives in So. Cal. Short story – one day I was walking Cujo with his sister Erica down Main Street when a man and woman came running out of a restaurant calling “Cujo, Cujo, Cujo.” I stopped to talk to them and Cujo definitely recognized them and jumped all over them them. (Cujo was not a friendly dog and was prone to biting at strangers, so it was obvious he knew them.) This couple was very excited and pleased (you’d think they saw Zenyatta walking down the street). They said they knew Cujo for years and when I asked their name so I could tell my son I ran into them, the husband said :Oh, he doesn’t know us. We only know Cujo. What is your son’s name?” Cujo was one of a kind and my son has never gotten another dog, I doubt that he ever will. His loss was just too great. Trina, instead of waiting for the unspeakable for me – your poems are so beautiful, can I be so bold as to ask for one of your poems for my four legged “monsters” in a humorous vein? I doubt that I could read something “after the fact.”
Trina Nagele in So Cal
Dear Rosemary, It would be my honor. I have your e-mail, so I will be in touch.
Trina Nagele in So Cal
To all—I was able to include details in this poem because I was in e-mail contact with Margie and she helped me out with info and responded to my questions. I will be happy to try to write poems for anyone who would like one (including poems for a pet or pets) if you would be so kind as to assist me by e-mailing me at trinambn@yahoo.com if we are not already in communication. Yours in Dumplinghood, Trina

I loved your poem Trina! Margie will love it too!! The time it must take for you to create this poems is such a giving thoughtful art. It has been 3 yrs. + since I lost my Jessie and since I kind of brought up my divorced sons’ German sherperd pup, babysitting each day as he went to work. I cried when Mia was old enough to stay at his home. I ask for Mia to come and visit periodically to “gramma’s house” and I am with her all the time and spoil her!! I have to admit, I have become allergic to dogs so I need to take allergy pills when I have her. Zenyatta has done wonders for me too, though I miss having a dog of my own.
Trina Nagele in So Cal
Thank you, Sally B, and bless you for babysitting Mia when she was a wee thing and taking allergy pills so she can still visit you now! High hoof!

Trina, what a lovely poem, you managed to tell Margie’s whole story of her love and bond with this golden retriever. I sympathize with her loss, as many have stated here before, having just lost my OPIE a wonderful rescued Cocker Spaniel. I have since rescued another, I named Amazing Grace, as she survived horrible treatment including a hookworm infestation and heart worms. She is a darling dog, so sweet and I believe grateful, for a good home. Perhaps Margie will eventually be able to open her heart to another dog someday, and will find the joy again that these magical creatures can give us. Hugs to you both.
Trina Nagele in So Cal
Thank you, Sue! I know you went the extra mile (or rather the extra nine-hour round trip!) to get your Amazing Grace after losing your sweet Opie— I hope Gracie continues to “grace” your life for many years to come!

Dearest Z, Today is Karen Gogue’s birthday. I’m sure you remember that darling redhead who used to come to see you at Hollywood Park. Maybe she didn’t tell you that the second syllable of her last name is pronounced like your title, Queen, just without the “n” at the end. You might remember too that she’s the one who on Veterans Day requested that I write a poem for your fellow heroine mare Reckless, who served with the Marines in the Korean War and was honored with promotion to Staff Sergeant. I’m sure you’ll want to join me in wishing Karen all the best today and always.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Birthday Poem for Karen Gogue
January 15, 2012
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Our dear Karen Gogue
Is not just a Z Dumpling (with a capital D)—
In fact, she’s Z Dumpling #1
Since she’s the one
As you may have heard
Who thought it’d be fun
To use that word
For fans of the Queen.
Enter then Diastu,
And the rest as they say is history,
For on the racing scene
A Dumpling tag has become
The “must have” accessory!
But our Karen G
Makes
Me think too
Of sweet frosted cakes.
You will recall
She kindly a birthday cake
And cards did take
On behalf of us all
When she on Barn 55 did call
To celebrate John’s special date.
And then about that day
To us she did relate
That to her own dismay,
And not with intention at all,
She her fingers had stuck in the cake!
For heaven’s sake!
(But a good time was had by all!)
Now with cake
I Karen also associate
Because she’s herself as sweet
As anyone could be!
We need no dramatic soliloquy
Inside the soul of Karen Gogue
To see.
A nicer person
You’ll never meet!
You she’ll treat
Like her own family:
For her sisters and sons
She’ll do anything to see
Them never glum,
And for every daughter
Equally,
Like a loving mother oughta,
She’ll fill any special need
And thank God every day
For that opportunity.
I have to say
That in my eyes
Karen Gogue
Is an Angel in Disguise!
By the way,
That is what Karen often says, too,
Of you,
Dear Z,
And for both of you it’s true!
Now for Karen a little birthday surprise—
The as yet unseen
End of Part Two
And most of Part Three
In the rhymed history
Of Reckless, the equine Marine!
Terry Crow
Happy birthday, Karen. I hope you have a great day.

Second Half of Part Two of “A Poem for Sgt. Reckless”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Another thing
Was trailering.
Where roads made it practical,
It was tactical
For Reckless inside
Her own trailer to ride.
And sure enough,
Into a small trailer towed by a jeep,
Reckless soon learned nimbly to leap.
Now, it was a little tough
For her trailer measured just one yard wide,
And in length only two—
With that, she had to make do.
That may seem quite funky,
But Reckless was spunky,
And her nerves didn’t fail her
In that tiny trailer.
It was a tight fit,
So when she jumped in it,
She would, like little Jack Horner,
Stand corner to corner.
’Twas good she was small
(Fourteen one hands in all,
Not in the least tall or stout)
As she learned to hop in and back out.
Where all this training began
Was next to Changdan,
Far from the front line–
At that post she was doing fine,
But when assigned
A combat mission,
Would she in fact fit the bill?
When they were in firing position,
Would she come undone
And her duty shun?
Soon
It would be seen
By every Marine
In her platoon
If this sweet young filly
Her role would fulfill.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Part Three of “A Poem for Sgt. Reckless”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From the command came the orders
To leave their safe quarters
And go
Into range
Fire with the foe
To exchange
Just a couple of miles away.
That day
They went by jeep and truck
Through mire and muck,
And Reckless was in her trailer towed.
Where the rutted road ended,
The men did off-load
Their heavy gun
And much more
Than a ton
Of its weighy ammo.
From there on foot they had to go
As they their way wended
Up to their first firing spot–
For them
The famed “Cold War”
Was about to become
Very “Hot.”
Lt. Pedersen went ahead
To scout out the first targets.
Sgt. Sherman and some
Of the gun crew
Were the next
To begin to ascend.
They had all they could do
To carry between them the gun.
Behind them came Reckless,
Bravely on the go
Fully loaded with ammo
And by Pvt. Coleman led.
She and he went fast,
And they soon passed
Sgt. Sherman and his crew.
They moved ahead
To the outlook up higher
From which the men would fire.
There of her load she was relieved,
And then with cautious speed,
Coleman and she went down
For another go-round.
Now, the recoilless rifle
Was renowned
For its tremendous back blast,
Which nothing could stifle.
Unfortunately it would disclose
The gun’s location
To watching foes.
Crews thus had to work fast
In its administration
To shoot four or five rounds
With their thunderous sounds,
Then quickly move to new spots
To evade return shots
Which at the crew would be directed
As soon as the gun was detected.
Coleman and Reckless had almost returned
On their second trip
When Sgt. Sherman let the gun rip.
For the deafening sounds of warfare
They’d been unable to prepare
The unsuspecting mare,
And her it did so scare
That she leapt straight up in the air—
Though she was fully loaded
With ammo on top of her saddle,
All four feet left the ground
At that shattering sound
As the first shell exploded,
And when she came down
She shook
From head to foot.
“Easy now,” Coleman to her spake,
But the crew couldn’t wait
For her to recuperate—
There was no time for her to calm down
Before they shot the next round.
Surely she wanted to skedaddle,
But she stood her ground
As the thunder her did surround
And her tender ears pound.
She gave a defiant snort
As if thereby she could thwart
Her fear
Of what she did hear.
Coleman her sweat-soaked neck stroked
And soothingly to her spoke
Before the third blast smote
The air,
And by the time the fourth
Was unleashed,
The gallant mare
Had almost ceased
So very much ’bout the noise to care.
Then it was time to change
Their firing position
Before the foe had them in range.
The men
Hurried
To make the transition.
Quickly adapting to this warfare condition,
Reckless by then
Scarce seemed to be worried.
Throughout the day
As the Marines continued to fight,
Always moving from site to site,
The firing crew relied
On Reckless and Coleman
To keep them with shells supplied.
The dauntless duo
Constantly were on the go
To get more ammo
And then make their way
Back to the fray.
Before the day was done,
Reckless had become
So unfazed
By the sound
Of the gun
That she had begun
To look around
For grass on the ground
On which she placidly grazed.
[To be continued…]
A finer basset hound never lived. @Don-I miss you, old friend. @Rosemary McCauley, Denise in AZ and Diana S, charter members of Arizona/New Mexico chapter-You might be a redneck if you make a living as a competitive eater, specializing in cow pies. @Stephanie in San Diego and Vicki B, members of California chapter-You might be a redneck if you have wrecked your car going over a curb in order to avoid a speed bump. @Marshall, president of North Carolina chapter-You might be a redneck if your best linen has Property of Motel 6 printed on it. @signofthetimes, president of Texas chapter-You might be a redneck if your TV gets 512 channels but you have to use an outhouse. @Debbie G, president of Kentucky chapter-You might be a redneck if you are allergic to freshness. @Judy Berube, president of New England chapter-You might be a redneck if you lost a thumb wrestling match to a dog. @Darlene Daniels, president of Indiana chapter-You might be a redneck if you have ever bought lingerie at a yard sale. @Brenda S, president and Abigail from Montreal, member of Canadian chapter-You might be a Canadian redneck if you’ve ever washed a moosehead in your washing machine. Beer doesn’t count. @Sue Fredrick and Sally B, charter members of Wisconsin chapter, presidency to be determined-You might be a redneck if you have sat on a toilet until your legs fell asleep. @Susan in TN and Kari Bussell-You might be a redneck if all of your relatives’ cars have a tag stolen sign in the rear window. You might be a redneck if, the morning after your kids’ slumber party, the dogs have fleas. You might be a redneck if the National Guard had to be called in during your last family reunion. You might be a redneck if, when you go to a party, the punch bowl flushes. You might be a redneck if, when you run out of beer, your friends go home.
