Happy Friday, Everyone!
This is the beginning of a very busy and exciting weekend in sports!
Today, OAKLAWN PARK will open for its’ 108th SEASON of racing. This track offers a very competitive stakes program which will conclude in April with the “Racing Festival of the South”. The “Festival” runs from April 11-14th. This is the week when the Apple Blossom G1…one of my very favorite races…will take place. Also, the Arkansas Derby G1 will run at this time. For years, the horses running contentiously in these events have consistently performed at a high level in stakes programs throughout country.
I’d also like to wish their new announcer, Frank Mirahmadi, all the best. Frank has called races in California and worked in television for the last several years. Frank is replacing their long-time race caller and the voice of Oaklawn for decades, Terry Wallace. Mr. Wallace called over 20,000 Oaklawn races during his career including both of my APPLE BLOSSOM victories. ALL THE BEST to both of these men in their future endeavors!
Jennifer Hoyt is the Media Relations Manager at Oaklawn and I know her very well. She and her husband, Rolly, were assigned by The Breeders’ Cup to ME and BARN 55 to work with MY JOHN on media events during the entire month before the 2010 Breeders’ Cup at Churchill Downs. They did a wonderful job…and we couldn’t THANK THEM enough for all of their help and assistance.
On Saturday, we begin a 3 day weekend of great racing around the country. On top of this, the Pro Football Play-off games take place. This is TOO CUTE! There is a quarterback in Denver named TIM TEBOW. He is really getting people excited about football. From what I am hearing, even people who normally don’t follow the sport are tuning in to watch him play. HMMM…sounds familiar! I keep teasing TASTY that he has the same initials as she does…TT. HOOVES CROSSED for all of the teams to play their very best!
Sunday, the VOX POPULI award will be given to RAPID REDUX during a ceremony which will take place at Santa Anita. This year’s selection was done differently than when I received this award in 2011…..they had the fans vote and be a part of the selection process. Congratulations to Rapid Redux on being this year’s deserving winner of the VOX POPULI AWARD! He had a very exciting year!
Finally, on Monday night, the Eclipse Awards will take place at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. The ceremony will begin at 8 Eastern Time / 5 Pacific …scheduled to last approximately 2 1/2 hours. If you are unable to attend, they will be broadcast live on HRTV. You may also view them on DRF.COM, RTN.TV, and HRTV.COM from the reports we are receiving. The horses nominated in ALL categories are very deserving of this honor…and it will be so exciting to see who wins this year’s HORSE OF THE YEAR! Hmmm….could it be a FILLY or MARE again?
Enjoy all of these great activites! Have a wonderful weekend…and on Monday…may we all take a moment to reflect upon the reason we are having this special holiday to observe the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.
With Love,
Hugs to All~

Happy Friday Z…..I just received a wonderful belated Christmas gift from my dear friend Michelle Jensen,,,,a copy of Zenyatta at Home…..a wonderful book about your time at Barn 55. Many great photos and lots of comments from your old friends. I love it and it reminds me of all the times I visited you and you lifted my spirits. I can still see you standing in the doorway, gazing out at the back track…..listening for the latest action.

Here’s a link for this fabulous book—you’ll see marvelous pictures of the Queen, and you’ll see our JAG admiring Zenny on page 25 as well. On this site you can “page through the book” on the video. Personally, I recommend the large size edition though it does cost a bit more. Fortunately, first time buyers of Blurb books such as this can get 20% off, just enter coupon code (in caps): NEWBLURB.

Do you know who else does Blurb books? The wonderful Australian photographer, Bronwen Healy, who provided the photos of Black Caviar & So You Think for these 2 articles on THE VAULT. I think it’s a GREAT idea for photographers to skip the middle man & sell directly to the public!

Love this book; have the largest version on my livingroom sofa table.
Beautiful and so well done !!!

Trina,
Thanks for the link. I “previewed” this wonderful book on-line, but I couldn’t see any page numbers, and it didn’t seem like there were 25. What am I missing here? I wanted to see JAG. What does the picture llol like?

The page is 3 photos on one page of Zen and John at Barn 55. Zen is playing with John’s hat. I’m in the background! I had NO clue I was ruining the picture!! I was approached by the photographer months later at SA. He recognized me (blush blush). I would have never known about this book had he not approached me. I am thrilled, HOWEVER, for being in a book with Our Queen! :-D I’m also in a Blood Horse issue with one of my Z posters after her BC Classic win in 2009.

Well – maybe it’s the “preview version” that’s the problem. Neither one of them goes to page 25 when you look at the thumbnails. The larger one goes to page 20 which looks to be the inside of the back cover. Have I completely “lost it”?
Trina Nagele in So Cal
You’re not losing it, Sandy. You’re right, the preview leaves out a lot of pages, including the shots with JAG! I didn’t check that out before–I meant you could see JAG in the book itself, and I didn’t notice she’s not in the preview. So sorry—but I hope you’ll get the book since I consider it a treasure.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Trina,
You may not see this as it’s now Tuesday (but I don’t see a new post yet). Thanks for the confirmation that I wasn’t missing something online. Will have to seriously consider the book now (or maybe after my Z budget recovers from the Plushie escapade :-)

Thanks for bringing back some of the great memories. Things are so different now though since you are not racing anymore Zenyatta.
So looking forward to the races this weekend and also to the Eclipse Awards this coming Monday, planning of course on watching it.
You have a great weekend and remember that you are always in my thoughts and prayers.
Love & Blessings to you Zenyatta!

Good evening Zenyatta,
my, Oaklawn looks like a casual affair. The cooker is right there, next to some equipment and the horses are in between. Too cute.
Have a restful night and dream sweet

Dearest Zenyatta,
I will never forget seeing run the Apple Blossom at Oaklawn. It’s a memory that I will cherish always. You were even more gorgeous than the apple blossoms!
A high hoof to Rapid Redux. He always runs with heart—something you know a lot about, dear Z. :)
I see that it’s snowing at Turfway Park tonight, so Kentucky must be getting cold weather. I hope you are snug and warm at Lane’s End.
Happy weekend to you and Tasty!

Here are the lyrics to the Peter, Paul and Mary song Terry Crow referred to above—a line or two may make you think of Z!
Oh, Stewball was a racehorse, and I wish he were mine.
He never drank water, he always drank wine.
His bridle was silver, his mane it was gold.
And the worth of his saddle has never been told.
Oh, the fairgrounds were crowded, and Stewball was there
But the betting was heavy on the bay and the mare.
And a-way up yonder, ahead of them all,
Came a-prancin’ and a-dancin’ my noble Stewball.
I bet on the grey mare, I bet on the bay
If I’d have bet on ol’ Stewball, I’d be a free man today.
Oh, the hoot owl, she hollers, and the turtle dove moans.
I’m a poor boy in trouble, I’m a long way from home.
Oh, Stewball was a racehorse, and I wish he were mine.
He never drank water, he always drank wine.

Such an incredible post today ( and always) Enjoyed as many of the links as I could squeeze in today. I volunteer with Coastal German Shepherd Rescue in San Diego and today we took about 6 dogs over to “The Total Dog” for water exercise and playtime in an indoor, climate controlled pool. Honestly to see the confidence of an abandoned, or abused dog blossom as they tentatively go in the water and then when a toy is thrown, or a treat given and lots of praise and hugs….. they gain so much confidence in themselves and in humans. It’s hard to explain, but it’s the best! By the end of their session, they are happy, tired and ready to settle down for a well-deserved toweling and treats. They have one of those therapy walker type pools that the lady said is just like the kind they put horses in for rehabilitation, ( only a much smaller version of course). So many beautiful shepherds. When I come home my shepherd, Tessa really gives me the once over “smell test” . Not sure why I wanted to share other than this site is so inspirational and we read of such good works by so many for humans and animals alike. I just wanted to share too.
There is an article in Bloodhorse about the Harris Farms. That is where one of the greatest California stallion resides “Unusual Heat”. Did not know of this situation. There is a restaurant on the premises and a Bed and Breakfast and I was thinking it would be a fun trip to go up and see him sometime…http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/66950/harris-warns-of-terror-danger-after-arson-hit

Darlene, I haven’t had time to read any posts for a while, but when scrolling down to bottom to go to yesterdays diary entry, for some reason I stopped on yours. I love German Shepherds, I used to have a beautiful one myself, people used to stop me in the street and want to give me their number in case I decided to breed her. Of course, I would tell them I was not going to be adding to the dog over population problem and they should adopt a dog from the rescue, or pound. There always seems to be a shepherd in my life, I often looked after one when the owners were away, and now I work for someone who has 2. When I first started working there and was petting the dogs, they said, they are guard dogs, not house pets! I said, you have the wrong person working here then, as I will always be loving to a dog. Now, every time i walk past them they roll over for a belly rub, and who do you suppose they mind the most. Yes, the person who pets and plays with them, me! I would never have stayed at the job if it weren’t for the dogs, Even now I’m wondering if I can really have 2 big dogs in my house if I leave!!! It’s great that you volunteer with the rescue, how wonderful that the dogs go to the pool. I just can’t fathom being cruel or neglectful to an animal, I’d go hungry before I’d let my animals suffer. My sister lives near you, she has a Staffordshire Terrier or possibly a Pit Bull mix (found in a dumpster at 3 days old) who is 15 and not doing so well. She’s had a fab life, and even thou’ u know it’s the kindest thing to let them go, it’ll be so sad. But my sister was saying she thinks she’d like to help a rescue and foster dogs when necessary, once hers has gone. Her husband had a German Shepherd, so perhaps they might be interested in helping the rescue you work with, if they need foster homes. I can’t imagine they will be ready to do anything for a few months, but let me know if Coastal uses foster homes.
LauraJ (Cincinnati OH)
LOL! When I come home from the Dobe rescue or the barn, I have to stand for inspection by my dogs. Since we have dogs coming in and going out, I smell different every time.
Sally B. (cherish Z- Wi.)
Golden retrievers and Labs were always my dogs through the years. After I lost my Jessie, my son who has been divorced broke the news to me, he had picked out a German Shepard pup from a breeder. My statement was “You can not leave a 7 wk. old pup in a small cage all day!” Needless to say, He would drop Mia off by me each morning he went to work. Mia worked her way into my heart. I walked her, taught & played with her, introduced her to kids and neighbors etc. I had her for about 41/2 months until he felt Mia could stay up by him. My son says she is a Big baby! ha ha She is a beautiful Shepard and is the best mannered dog. As you can see, I have a soft spot for the Shepard now. I just never knew the breed that well before.

Our Shepherd, Daisy Mae, sends you greetings. She came to us as a stray with a chain hanging around her neck that she had broken free from. She sends greetings to you all. And yes, she “flops” for belly rubs!

oh Judy – you’ve just MADE my entire weekend with the Seabiscuit post! I LOVE Seabiscuit – the book by L. Hillenbrand was THE reason I even paid any attention to TB racing. Then I HAD to see Santa Anita (Derby, 2007), then I HAD to return to SA for Breeder’s Cup 2009, where I saw (drum roll, please) ZENYATTA and screamed myself silly as she swept to her Classic victory, then Apple Blossom 2012 etc etc etc. Have a great weekend!

I can’t remember is Laura Hillabrand covers the choice of name in her book — but I would guess it has something to do with the sort of “nautical” food theme – his sire was Hard Tack

Dear Sue Fredericks, Sharon in Seattle, Signofthetimes and Dawn Conrad:

I got into racing as a result of my mother having owned race horses. She saw Seabiscuit’s last race, the 1940 Santa Anita Handicap. She used to regale me with stories about it. I never tired of hearing the stories. I wish I could hear them from her lips one more time.

@-Dear Ingrid Arnone South Beach,
In re-reading my comment I left for you a couple of days ago, it reads very snippy. I am not very good with words. My sincere apologies for the way it must have come across. I love Zenyatta with every fiber in my being, but for me that love extends to her connections…All of them….for me Ann & Zenyatta are one beautiful kindred spirit…Zenyatta is everything good in Ann and vise versa….that is before you get to Jerry, Dottie, David ( as kind a man as you will ever meet) and Mr. Shirreffs who is truly my hero. He would never allow Zenny to be sold to a stranger let alone to Japan. ….so I did get a wee bit defensive…..I am sorry and I hope this better helps explain where I was coming from.
PS- and if God forbid all of her connections were to lose their fortunes….we the fans would ALL manage to buy her and keep her here…..
Kari Bussell/Tn.
Forgive me guys- I am almost two days behind and need to reply yet again….
@All who left such beautiful, kind words regarding the video. My heartfelt Thank You!!
It really does fill me with joy to know that I in a very small way put you in touch with the Joy of Zenyatta….thank you so very much for taking the time to let me know.
@Cynthia H- Miss you, during your “busy” season at Santa Anita! Thank you! 12th-Heart.
@Deborah Richman-thank you, Thank You , Thank YOU!!!
Heidi Kruckenberg (vallejo, ca)
Ok Kari, I’ve seen you use the 12th Heart, JAG and a few others. What does that mean?
Anyways, Zen, I know it’s very very late but, I couldn’t sleep! With the playoffs tomorrow with “My/Our Team (49ers),” and my dear friends Team the Saints, well, I’m excited to say the least”! May the Best Team Win and Move Forward!!! (How about that Sportsmanship, heh?)
Also, I’ve been driving myself crazy with “Foaling Dates!” First, Rachel ( first week of Feb), You ( Early March) and, V! Isn’t you’re mom having a full sibling to you this Spring? I think I read that somewhere and that she will be due at the end of March, early April?!!?
Also, about the “next b/f” thoughts, I think that the Moss’ will wait to see how this foal goes before deciding on the “next date!?” Same with RA! I’m sure that we’ll hear something around March.
Zenny/Dottie…. I have a question, if you could explain/answer, I’d appreciate it! How exactly do they do “fetal Sexing?” It can’t be like that of a Human Child where you can see the ummm…. Or is it? I’ve seen many mare sonograms (sp?) but, never one that mentioned anything of the gender!
BTW.. How is Mr. Besilu coming along and is Balance still in KY and is she foaling this season?
How is Life At Sweet?

(From http://www.vetmed.lsu.edu/eiltslotus/theriogenology-5361/equine%20pregnancy_2.htm)
Fetal sexing
Fetal sexing is becoming more and more in demand. Numerous reasons exist for owners desiring knowledge of the sex of the fetus, such as appraisals, insurance coverage, payment of stud fees, sales consignments, mating lists, sale or purchase, etc.
The veterinarian performing fetal sexing should be aware of the liability implications involved.
Gender determination is based on the location of the genital tubercle. The genital tubercle is the precursor of the penis in the male or the clitoris in the female. The tubercle migrates toward the umbilicus in the male and toward the anus in the female.
Ideal times for performing the {ultrasound] procedure are from 59 to 68 days or 5 to 6 months. Before 58 days the tubercle is not distinct enough and has not migrated sufficiently to make a distinction. After 70 days the fetus is hard to reach until it is approximately 3.5 to 4 months of age.
As the fetus gets larger, a trans-abdominal approach may be preferred.

Procedure can result in loss of fetus

RE: 12TH -HEART
What that means is a little hard to explain. It started when I did a tribute to Zenyatta to the song “The Twelfth of Never” by Johnny Mathis. After my hero , Mr. Shirreffs greatly honored me ( I cried happy tears and did the happy dance) with another wonderful comment under this video. My great friend Cynthia Holt(thrilled for me , knowing he is my hero) and I started ending our emails with variations of I’ll love you until the twelfth of never, forever and so forth….Both of our birthdays are on the 12 and it is a very special number…After time we started signing off with simply 12th…except Cynthia always added the symbol of the heart with the <3 ….which on FB turns into a heart. I went on and on about how my computer did Not have the "heart" symbol….My dear great friend, being the michievious "bad" one took some apparent pleasure and amusement every time I wrote 12th-heart…On FB Jag, Dunie and a few others here picked it up. …and yes great friend was very wrong not to tell me how to make the heart..LOLOL! In a nut shell it is just our unique "mature" way of saying best friends forever!
Dunie taught me how to do the heart on Jag's wall!-LOL!..Great friend is still in hot water!
This is the video if you are interested. I still can't believe I got to be so close to her at both Oaklawn and Churchill Downs….both Zen-magic moments in the way I found myself in front of her at the barns.
Cindy & Larry Jones' Friend/Vet Karen- if you are out there. One more time…..Thank YOU!!! I am the girl you took onto the track steps behind Zenyatta straight back to her barn. Move up in time to the 2010 BCC and who should be seated in a box just to the right of mine just like the Apple Blossom….Vet Karen…..

Living in Northern California, I have had the pleasure of hearing Frank calling races at the various fairs in Nor Cal. @Kari Bussell – It was another good game today. It seems like UK and UT always have good, close games, at least in basketball. That was so nice what you said about thinking of me during the Lady Vols game. Believe it or not, I was thinking of you also! Of course I wanted us to win, but when it started looking bad I thought, Well I’m glad that Kari will be happy! I heard the Lady Cats coach on the news saying how the UK fans gave Coach Summit a rousing ovation when she was introduced. That’s awesome. She deserves it, without a doubt.
I thought you might be cheering for the Giants because of Eli. I know you love those Manning boys! Since there’s not a lot of former UK players in the NFL, I just cheer for former SEC players. There certainly are plenty of them! My two favorite teams left are Denver and Green Bay, too. Who knows, maybe they’ll meet in the Super Bowl. I’d have to cheer for Denver if that happened, since Green Bay just won it last year.

Maybe all our Zen energy will transfer to her :) She is not famous but we love her so. We all yell RUN MISTLETOE RUN !!!! The children think she talks and Jennifer is our Horse Whisperer. Thank you my sweet family and my Queen for listening. I love you Zenyatta more than you will ever know. I am sending you many many Hugs and Kisses, Shari XXXOOO

Zenyatta: I like this picture of you very much because it shows in perspective just how very tall that you are. As usual you look fabulous. It is also obvious that you enjoy eating to keep up your strength. Great to see this.
