Good Morning, Dear Friends!
Last night, Dottie and MY JOHN’S copy of THE BLOODHORSE’S magazine…..The 25 MOST INTRIGUING Horses and People of 2011 arrived. When they opened the package…and saw ME…as the #1 HORSE of 2011…they were so, so proud.
WOW…ME….#1. I truly believe, as do they, that ALL OF YOU helped to make this possible. I can’t THANK YOU enough.
Then…to see that MY JOHN was #5 on the list of INTRIGUING PEOPLE for the year…was also very special. AGAIN…THANK YOU! We so appreciate all of your support, love, and kindness on so many levels!
The photos, the various highlights illustrated for 2011, and the stories about Rachael Alexandra and I now that we are MOMS-to-BE are all beautifully done and written.
I must say, both Rachel Alexandra and I look quite fabulous enjoying our ‘new looks’ for our current careers. ‘BEING IN FOAL’ rather becomes US! (Blush, Blush)
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate everyone on each of these lists for their accomplishments and hard work throughout 2011.
***HORSES listed in the order presented in the magazine:
Zenyatta, Havre de Grace, Goldikova, Frankel, Animal Kindgom, Blind Luck, Shackleford, Drosselmeyer, Uncle Mo, Royal Delta, Black Caviar, Rapid Redux, Caleb’s Posse, Hansen, Cape Blanco, Flat Out, Union Rags, My Miss Aurelia, Stay Thirsty, Bernardini (MY BERNIE), Acclamation, Amazombie, Winter Memories, Ruler On Ice, and The Factor.
***People also mentioned in the order they appeared in the magazine:
Mike Smith, Bill Mott, Graham Motion, Bob Baffert, John Shirreffs (MY JOHN), Chantal Sutherland, Rosie Napravnik, Scooter Dickey, Steve Asmussen, John Velazquez, Mike Repole, Todd Pletcher, Jerry Hollendorfer, Aidan and Joseph O’Brien, Ken and Sarah Ramsey, Bobby Flay, Dale Romans, Corey Nakatani, Barry Irwin, Kathy Ritvo, Marylou Whitney, Rick Dutrow Jr., Benjamin Leon Jr., Bo Derek, and George Strawbridge.

HIGH,VERY HIGH ,HOOF TO YOU,YOUR JOHN AND TO MIKIE!!!!! How wonderful and how well deserved!!! I,m just going to have to subscribe to Bloodhorse–it doesn’t seem to be available anywhere here–all of the “horsey”magazines are about western riding!
@Shannon-So sorry to hear about the loss of your precious horse. Please know that all here will be here for you and feel your heartbreak.
Have seen “War Horse” twice,so far,and cried all the way through it the second time too! What a magnificent film!! It’s the kind of epic you rarely see anymore-reminded me of some of the best movies from the 30’s and 40’s!! Surely hope Speilberg wins some awards for it.
I have SO loved the recent photos of you—especially the one of you two running in the paddock!!It is truly glorious!!!Hope you’re having a wonderful day with some sun on your back and a soft breeze to ruffle your mane!! LOVE YOU!!!
Maryp (New York)
Z, High Hooves being #1 intriguing horse with Your John and Your Mikey being included as well. Jerry, Ann and the whole team are the most intriguing to come along in TB racing in quite some time! All of the Zsters can be part of it since nothing like this has happened before! You and yours are truly “originals” sharing you with everyone!
Love you sooo much. Kisses on your soft nose.
Sue Fredrick - Wisconsin
CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL WINNERS! Especially you dear girl but then we all would have pitched a fit if you had lost. Glad dear Rachel made the list can’t wait to see her colt soon. Your team is again recognized for their excellence in care, let that be a lesson to other trainers. I haven’t received my BLOODHORSE yet, sometimes I think those postal workers enjoy it first. I’ll be revved up if it isn’t in the mail tomorrow can’t wait to see you beautiful.
@Kari Bussell, hope you are doing okay, haven’t heard much from you lately. Hugs
Love you Z Kisses on your nose

Big congratulations to you and your whole family, Z! “Most Intriguing”, were the key words in this special list. I seem to recall that fans were allowed to vote and the outcome was determined by the vote. I know I voted!! It is truly amazing that in a year there was no Zenyatta running on the track, your influence was still felt industry-wide! Your absence was noted in the comparison of the statistics for the 2011 Breeders Cup and the 2010 BC — for 2011, without Zenyatta, the numbers were down all across the board, from the attendance, to the TV audience, to the handle — THEY MISSED THE BIG GIRL, BIG TIME! You were intriguing for a lot of other reasons, as well. It was pointed out in some discussion groups that your celebrity is being used for great charitable causes, a truly noble and worthy way to give back even more than you and your connections already have. I can’t wait to get my issue of this special edition. I just received Horse Racing Divas with your beautiful picture on the cover, from BloodHorse as well. Truly a wonderful update on 12 of racing’s great females who achieved the highest honor of Horse of the Year (the honor was given in different ways in earlier times). I have nearly read it cover to cover already!
Big hugs, sweet girl! 56+- more days! Yea-a-a-a-a! Ann Maree

Got “Horse Racing’s Divas” for Christmas, read it in one sitting! Only cried over one horse – you guessed it, OUR ZENNY! Right from the first paragraph, I had tears in my eyes!

Great jokes today, Terry; guess you did not get selected for jury duty?? I guess you told to many jokes and they did not want that to sway the verdict; glad you are back.

Dear Zenny,
Thanks for the update on the 2011 winners in Bloodhorse; for those who do not at this time get Bloodhorse magazine. So glad the broodmares are getting some attention
these days; they are often kept under “lock and key”. Guess yours and Rachel’s foal will have to meet on the track; since you and her did not actually run against each other. I guess running against the boys or running in a race with mixed company counts more.
Blind Luck and HDG did have a fun rivalry; but it all boiled down to HDG beating those
boys in the Woodward. Glad to see Goldi on the list; she is such a very special european mare; wish she had a diary, although I don’t read french, it would be fun to enjoy the pictures and the news.
Hope you are having a fun filled time today, enjoying that “warm” KY weather and grazing for two.

Love the fact that YOUR JOHN, was fifth in the list of most intriging people; We all need to work on JOHN SHERRIFFS for HALL OF FAME TRAINER; still working on a way
to help with this deserving award for such a very deserving person; dandilions and guinness for all equines !!!!
Just tried guinness stout and really love it. Allergic to regular beer and wine; stuffy nose.
No allergy to barley. It is $$$$$.

Maybe Zenny will get her Guinness again after she foals. The brew is said to be very good for nursing mothers – my mother was told, by her doctor, to drink it after I was foaled.

Very cute, Brenda. Maybe Zenny will need a

Just like everyone else, you will always be Number One for me. I’m so proud of you and yours. It is amazing to me the amount of work that must go into keeping this wonderful diary going every day. Everything on this site, the diary, photos, videos, shop, everything on here must take a HUGE amount of work and dedication and I know we are ALL SO THANKFUL for this wonderful work. CONTRATULATIONS AND THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH! We love you Queen Z!

My adorable Zenyatta, congratulations and a big kiss, I keep saying that you are one in a million, and to Rachel Alexandra big kiss, to John and Mike, a big hug, and to the rest a big congratulations, when I hear this great news about you my Z my tears always start running down my face.
The Japanese keep buying ours horses ( Top liner, Cozi Rosie, and a few more the sad part is that the Japanese when the horses are ready to retire they kill them, I think they don’t care about the horses the way we do here in U S, love you always Ingrid.
LauraJ (Cincinnati OH)
Ingrid, stereotyping much?
People from all over the world buy “our” horses, not just the Japanese. American-bred horses go to Europe, the Middle East, Russia, Turkey, Korea, Singapore, Argentina, Peru, Zimbabwe, and many other countries. Horses from other countries come here. Bad things can happen to old or non-productive horses ANYWHERE, including here. Just check out the New Holland auction if you don’t believe me. In Japan (and Canada and Hong Kong and Uruguay, etc., etc…), there are bad owners who don’t care about their animals and will sell them to slaughter or simply stop feeding them. There are also good owners who pension their retirees or have them retrained for new careers. (When I took riding lessons in Japan, I rode an OTTB.)
The reason the big Japanese farms are buying horses like Cozi Rosie is because they are committed to improving the quality of their stock. They want Japanese racing to be on a par with racing in Europe, Australia, and North America. The farms are first-class, well run facilities. The horses live very well there. Nobody’s going to abuse an animal for which they paid half a million dollars. Meanwhile, there are Japanese animal-welfare organizations and there are people who look out for the horses. Some of them have buy-back clauses. Your blanket statement that “the Japanese when the horses are ready to retire they kill them” is not accurate. It depends on the owner.
Frankly, I worry a lot more about the $1000 yearlings, both the ones that stay here and the ones that are sent abroad. No one is looking out for them.
Ingrid Arnone. South Beach.
Laura, thank you for the information, yes I know they buy ours horses all over the world, and I know they are good owners and bad owners, but do you remember what happened to Ferdinand, and if I recall a few more face the same luck like him. I only hope Zenyatta is not sold to someone out of US. Ingrid.
Kari Bussell/Tn.
Zenyatta will NEVER be sold..Ann and Jerry Moss are on the record with that..If you knew anything about Ann Moss you would KNOW that!!Please read up before making judgmental comments…People from other countries often fear when their horses end up in America….You can take any ONE story and demonize any country, group , or person….Please, let’s not do that.
LauraJ (Cincinnati OH)
Yes, I remember Ferdinand. How could I not? But I also remember Exceller (killed in Sweden) and Our Mims (left to fendfor herself in a field in Kentucky), the Ernie Paragallo horses in New York, and many others. So…what Kari said. We all need to keep the pressure on everywhere to get better care for all horses.
And it’s true. The Mosses would never part with Zenyatta. She’s Ann’s pet, albeit a very big one. :-)

Trina, i could not piggyback onto LauraJ’s message right above yours, so I am responding to her from your space, which is closest. Hope you don’t mind!!
LauraJ: you know SO much about horses and racing, and since you care about what’s happening to horses all over our country today as far as abuse, abandonment and slaughter, would you ever consider becoming our team mate at Equi-Army-NDO? We fight so hard and help others fight so hard for horses. We help in rescues. We put forth good reference information. We support equine rescue and advocacy groups who show us so often that they are doing such a great job. We need people like you. Please consider joining us. Thank you for your consideration.
Darlene Daniels
@LauraJ in Cincinnati. I totally agree with you. And I would like to add my two cents worth. There are good and bad in everything all over the world. Even though the USA is to us the greatest country in the world we also have our dow nfalls, such as starving horses in Louisiana, Indiana, etc. etc. etc. On a lighter note, Laura I know Pricehill well. I was born in the Blue Ash area but grew up in Harrison. We had to go to Cincinnati for everything back then. Western Hills was my old stomping grounds. I now live in north central Indiana. Thanks for all your wonderful posts. Have a great day. Darlene
Celeste in TX
What happened to Ferdinand and Exceller was absolutely awful, but from what I have read in more recent years is that many of those farms in Japan are now going out of their way to take good care of the horses. From what I’ve seen they have been so happy with the successes of Sunday Silence and his line, among others, that they want to keep improving their stock. The way that they continue to try to work with War Emblem, a shy breeder, has impressed me as well. Couple that with the knowledge that many of the American owners who sell to overseas buyers now put a buy-back clause in the sales agreement, I think the horses are doing better than in Ferdinand’s time and being sold to a foreign market is not an automatic death sentence.
Trina Nagele in So Cal
Good info, Celeste. Thanks for sharing.

Dear Ingrid Arnone:
I know how all of us are heartbroken over the slaughter of our beloved TB’s, but I think that because of what happened to Ferninand and Exceller, our stallions and broodmares who leave the US for other countries are kept track of better than in the past. I’m still concerned with the horses in our Country that are being sent to slaughter in Mexico and Canada every day. There are some very good people in racing, along with all of us, who are hoping to end slaughter. Here is a link about one of them, trainer Gary Contessa and a TB called No Halo On Me

@ Terry Crow–Loved the Elvis story–Priceless! Keep ’em coming!!
Terry Crow
Sue-Good to hear from you. Most of what I know about him came second hand, but I will be happy to relate them in a post for you. The story that my nephew told me happened when he was living in Bel Air, California and not working. The Beatles visited him there, just to put the time into perspective. He decided to do a comeback special on TV which was very well received and the rest is history. I just wish I had picked my late sister-in-law’s brain for more stories about him., but they were both gone before I got the chance.
Karen
I love you, Zenyatta. You will always be # 1 with me and so many.
Bonnie
Congratulations Zenyatta! Besides the most Intriguing I might add the most engaging, charismatic, healing, personable, etc.
I also agree it would have been great to see Mario’s name mentioned in the honors somewhere but I have noticed very little notoriety is given to grooms. Z’s connections have honored Mario but very few others do. I think Mario’s presence in Zenyatta’s life helped make her who she is…his attention, caring and his spiritual connection with her were amazing!
So, I’d like to send all the best to Mario and thank him for his professional and heart-felt way with Zenyatta.

Among the groups assisting the Sabine Parish Humane Society have been Remember Me Rescue and Louisiana Horse Rescue, which estimate the cost of care of the horses to be about $450 daily. Also assisting the humane society have been Shannon Rojas and the veterinary team at Louisiana State University.
Remember Me Rescue has petitioned the humane society to adopt all of the remaining horses, according to the group’s website. “If allowed to do so, we will rehabilitate, retrain, and re-home all of them over the next several months, and (they will) be placed in loving forever homes,” according to a message posted on the Remember Me Rescue website.

Of course you are Number 1 — YOUR MIKE, too, is #1 and YOUR JOHN is right up there as well. I ordered my copy on Monday and it arrived today (I’m impressed). Just finished reading it for the first of what will be many times,. The photos of you are fabulous. Can’t get enough!
Queen Z, your legend is just beginning to grow. We all knew you were extraordinary while you were racing, but as each month goes by we miss you more and more on the track, and the perspective that time gives only magnifies your accomplishments and one-of-a-kind personality. Now, we await your foal and keep our fingers crossed that he/she is healthy and strong.
Congrats again to all at Barn 55, you set the standard of excellence in every way! It’s nice to see you get the recognition you deserve.

Dottie is #1, definitely!

Without a Doubt..DOTTIE is #1. There really should be a specail award for the woman who has done more for growing the sport of racing, over the past several years then any other. Not to mention taking time to teach us along the way. I hope she knows how many of us admire and respect her for her for her kindness, love and the proffessional she is, as well as the voice of Zenny. Definitly #1. Thanks Dottie

I too wondered why you didn’t mention Mike’s #1 slot…totally appropriate for the two of you to be at the top of the list. You may well turn out to be the most beloved race horse in history.

Who else could possibly No.1??? NO ONE BUT YOU!!! Congratulations dear girl. Fantastic that YOU and MIKEY are both No.1’s and YOUR JOHN will always be No.1 to all of us. I second Diana S’s comments, Dottie should have been on that list, I can’t believe that I didn’t spot that error when I voted. No need to ask who will be No.1 foal of the year for 2012. I hope that you and Tasty are having a good day and that somebody has bought you a big box of pears and some carrots to celebrate your new award. Hugs and kisses to you and Tasty.

Hi Neighbor,
I finally looked up Ft. Erie on the map (I knew I had heard of it but couldn’t remember exactly where it was). You may be one of the closest people to northeast Ohio on this site! I pass by the Buffalo exits every summer on the way to the NY Finger Lakes!
Brenda S..Ontario, Canada
Hi Sandy, You’re right, we are neighbors. I probably pass by you when I drive to Kentucky. I know when I hit Ohio I’m well on my way to Lexington. Maybe you could think about getting off the 90 and visiting Fort Erie, we have a very pretty track and Prince of Wales day is always a good day.
