Good Morning Everyone,
I hope you had a lovely weekend. Mine was perfect! I’m still elated over the fabulous JANUARY weather we are enjoying here in Kentucky. I understand from many of your comments that it is unseasonably warm in the rest of the country as well. Cheers to enjoying these “warm” moments!
Today marks the beginning of the “JANUARY HORSES OF ALL AGES SALE” at Keeneland. It is the first thoroughbred ‘auction’ of 2012 and it will take place for the next 4 days. It offers horses of ALL AGES…not just specifically YEARLINGS as the September Sale or 2 YEAR OLDS IN TRAINING as the April Sale does. This sale is much more open in its’ offerings. Upon completion, the industry will analyze the data and results to help them forecast the ‘climate’ of future sales for our new year. It is a very interesting concept to follow.
If you’d like to view the Keeneland activities, the LIVE feed of the auction may be seen at www.keenelandsales.com. On their web-site, they will also display the various catalog pages for you to review. You will have the opportunity to see the manner in which the family pedigree is presented. As I mentioned to you last week…it is always charted through the female branch of a horse’s family.
As you look through a sales catalog, it is interesting to note that each horse has a CONSIGNOR (a farm or agency acting on behalf of the seller for the sale) and is given a HIP NUMBER. Everything for a particular horse during the sale is referenced by these 2 things.
The way a horse is placed in the catalog and given a particular HIP number for sales purposes is very organized and detailed by the sales company. They want to keep it very specific for all of the sales entrants, their clients, and the consignors. The day a horse sells is firstly determined by which day his/her consignor is selling….for example, Monday or Tuesday etc. Different consignors sell on different days. Once this is determined, the horse is given a HIP NUMBER.
The HIP NUMBER is established by applying a two-fold process: (1) which day the consignor is selling and (2) alphabetically listing each horse selling on that day by name or if unnamed by the first letter of the MARE’S NAME.
The sales company varies the LETTER that is used to start posting the HIPS in the catalog for a particular sale. They do not always begin with the letter “A” and end with “Z”…they vary it. This system of changing the LETTER which starts off each sale seems to work well for everyone.
This is TOO CUTE! The photo for this year’s catalog cover was taken by “Z” (gotta’ love her name)…a terrific woman. You may have seen her work in various industry magazines and periodicals. From one “Z” to another….GREAT JOB!
Enjoy watching the sale!
With Love,
Hugs to All~(Here’s wishing Garrett Gomez all the best following yesterday’s incident leaving the paddock at Santa Anita)

Get well wishes to Garrett Gomez, he was off to a great start this year. Liked the looks of that big colt Out of Bounds. Hoping the days until both you and Tasty foal are spent enjoying your great weather. On pins and needles waiting for the big day. Looking forward to seeing not only one beautiful baby, but Tasty’s as well.

Dottie: I always appreciate information about the business of horse racing. I will enjoy watching the Keeneland sale, as there are usually a few surprises. Thank you for the explanations.
Zenny: You have been looking grand in your recent photos! Loved seeing your interest in your plushie.
ZDumplings: When I went to http://www.gratefulness.org to light candles for Zenny, there were 0 candles burning! Each person can light 5 each day. I think it is a wonderful way to honor Zenny and say a prayer for her and Baby Z.

You are the best – such a wealth of knowledge – I have learned so much from “you”!!
Just read Lane’s End reported the first foal of 2012 arrived this morning, at their farm – such excitement to see all the babies!!
Yes, truly enjoying these warmer temperatures we have been having in Vermont also – not a speck of snow on the ground!!

Zenyatta, I think of you every single day. You bring joy to so many people, including me. I have adored you since the first time I saw you (you won your first race). I can’t have a horse right now, but I am getting a puppy, and I will name her in honor of you.
God has sent some special horses to us over the years and you are right there among them. Be safe and take care of your wee fi-fi. Love, Nina

Queen Z,
At a Fasig-Tipton sale in Fort Worth, “select” horses were listed first in the catalog. “Select” horses were chosen by Fasig-Tipton scouts who visited horses at their farms prior to the sale. Are there “select” horses at the Keeneland sales?
LauraJ (Cincinnati OH)
There are Select horses at the Keeneland September yearling and November breeding stock sales. I don’t think the current sale has a Select division. The January sale seems to have generally lower-quality horses, although I saw one go for $1.4 million earlier today. The 2-year-old in training sale has too few horses for multiple sessions.

It was a tough day for jockeys–update on Garrett & Rosie
Jockey Garrett Gomez, who has won six stakes races in the first 10 days of the Santa Anita meeting, injured his heel on Sunday when his horse, Silver Summation, reared and unseated Gomez while leaving the walking ring before the eighth race.
“I don’t know the extent of the injury,” the jockey’s agent, Tony Matos, said Monday. “I don’t know how long he’ll be out. Hopefully, not too long
And, Rosie landed on her feet!
Jockey Rosie Napravnik, who was thrown off her mount before the sixth race Sunday at the Fair Grounds, escaped serious injury, said her business agent, Kelly Wietsma.
Wietsma said that X-rays of Napranvik’s ankles were negative. Napravnik, who has bruises, was cleared to ride Wednesday if she feels up to it, Wietsma said.
Glad that the injuries were not more serious.

Judy, now that’s where they came up with “jumping for joy”. Fun to watch. I’d feel the same way if I was couped up for that length of time, but if I tried kicking for joy, I’d probably in traction. ha
Sally B. (cherish Z- Wi.)
sorry, be in traction.

Thanks, that was great — makes sense, but I didn’t know horses could kick and buck so much, just to blow off steam after being cooped up.

@All: Any one who ever says that horses who do dresssage are being forced to do un-natural moves they wouldn’t do on their own is strongly urged to watch this video! This horse is having a ball! And the big leap with all four off the ground? Wow! Fabulous video, Barb. Thanks so much for sharing this!
@P.S. My little silly rescue “Hoot” could have used some lessons from this horse on stopping when running full blast at the fence! He didn’t. Now he does. Took him plowing through the fence head first to get the message! Thankfully, his pride was the biggest injury.

Zenny seemed to have “all the moves” and they came quite natural to her. And, she sure seemed to enjoy it as much as we enjoyed watching her.

Jethro hated dressage; we had a professional dressage instructor come to our barn; he got him all collected up and pretty; he freaked out and tore out of the position and ran and ran and ran.
Their bodies can do it, but their minds have to be in agreement.
Carmela B
Any horse can do lower-level dressage (Training through 3rd Level). It makes them more athletic, more supple, and definitely better to ride. It should NOT involve anything that they shouldn’t be able to do, physically, unless they’re already damaged in some way. When done correctly, that is…there are trainers, and there are trainers. Anyone can call themselves a trainer…and that’s the part of the equation, for our horses, that gets dicey.

Very fun video, Judy B.

Hi there Big Girl, TT, Dottie & Zen-sters:
Thank you for the interesting info. about Keeneland cataloguing. This will definitely help me when I watch & read at the auction. Weather — yup. So far it’s been a very mild winter by Montreal standards, even though there have been “cold spells” that were intense. However, January is EARLY for a dyed-in-the-wool Montrealer to predict a continuing mild winter…..what I can say is that many friends & yours truly are disgruntled at the lack of snow because, in a wintery place like Quebec, no snow together with bare trees & grey skies tends to make everything outdoors look dilapidated & dirty! So we all love the look of snow, even if we aren’t active winter sports people.
Zenny, I’m glad you’re enjoying a comparatively mild winter at this point in your pregnancy because it means that you and Tasty can be outside most days keeping fit!
I have a surprise for YOUR JOHN today.

Thank you so much for this article. I love War Admiral–he is our horse’s great, great, great, great grandfather on his dam’s side. I printed this article for my notebook.

Barbara-It is too bad that War Admiral is remembered most today for the race he did not win, the match with Seabiscuit. He was a great horse, one of the greatest of all time.
sharon in seattle
Amen, Terry. And I DO love Seabiscuit. His life story IS the stuff of Hollywood movies. If I’m not mistaken, War Admiral’s sire was Man o War and Man o War was Seabiscuit’s grandsire.
LauraJ (Cincinnati OH)
Sharon, you are correct.. Man O’War was the sire of War Admiral. Man O’War also sired Hard Tack, who was Seabiscuit’s sire. Hard Tack was known for his foul temperament.
Barbara Wood (Texas)
I think so too, and it’s such a great story because his original owner didn’t even want him.
Sue Fredrick - Wisconsin
Barbara, War Admiral also appears way back in Indy’s pedrigree on his mom’s (Weekend Surprise) side, so our little ZB will have a bit of him on from both sides. What a royal pedigree he/she will have!!!

It is interesting to note that Seabiscuit’s maternal granddam was “Balance,” the same name as one of Zenyatta’s half-sisters.

Thank you for a informative post again (you too Dottie) I sure wish my ship would come in and I could be at the sale. I’d love to be able to bid on some of these beauties. My BFF and I walked around at Keeneland after your Nov party and Blind Luck’s groom actually brought her out for us to look at. A pinhooker is someone who buys a horse with the intention of re-selling it later at a profit. One can buy weanlings to sell as yearlings, buy yearlings to train and sell in the 2-year-old sales, etc.
Beth Buckley
Pinhookers around here attempt to purchase an animal before it runs through the scheduled sale. They get so bad at cattle auctions that they will jump on the side of your trailer as you are pulling onto the sale grounds just to get a see of what is coming in before anybody else.
Barbara Wood (Texas)
Oh my goodness! Thanks Beth. I’ll remember it like the bad vaudeville performers being yanked offstage with the shepherd’s crook. The horses are yanked from the sale early.
Beth Buckley
Can’t wait to see Zenyatta’s foal!!! I just wonder how many thoroughbred publications will feature her foal on the cover?

Dear Queen Zenyatta & the Royal Baby –
.
The sale at Keeneland is a joy to watch. Some of the mares are so close to delivering their foals that you can practically see the outline of the baby as they move in the well-lighted ring! It’s a good way for us to imagine how your bundle of joy is progressing.
.

An original poem by Paul Mellon
The day my final race is run
And, win or lose, the sinking sun
Tell me it’s time to quit the track
And gracefully hang up my tack,
I’ll thank the Lord the life I’ve led
Was always near a thoroughbred.
Though some may think and I’ll agree
That only God can make a tree,
Before God thought of trees, it’s said,
His mind was on the thoroughbred.
