NEWS ALERT! HEAVY WINDS HIT THE ARCADIA AREA LAST NIGHT! MY JOHN WILL TRY AND GET SOME PHOTOS FOR YOU SOON!
Hello Everyone,
So, so sorry to be posting you this late in the day. MY JOHN and DOTTIE (Sophie too) live in Arcadia, California…right by Santa Anita. Last night, that area had a HUGE wind storm. The winds were the hardest and traveling the fastest any of them can remember. The power is completely out in ALL of Arcadia, the phone / internet lines are not working, and trees are down everywhere. Schools are closed, businesses are also closed…and people are traveling about very carefully due to all of the trees and power lines that are down and blocking the roads.
On Huntington Drive, right by the racetrack, there are cars covered with fallen trees. None of the street signals anywhere in town are working. As for Dottie and MY JOHN, 2 large trees from their neighbors yard fell…and are now in their yard. Thus, the fence is destroyed in 2 places as well. Patio furniture moved around the yard and 2 chairs went into the pool from one of the decks. It is truly amazing to see how these winds could literally MOVE this heavy furniture and force all of these trees to fall.
Dottie went over to Santa Anita late this morning and some of the huge trees by the one escalator are completely down. Smaller trees in the plant are also on the ground. It seems like the backside held up fairly well. At this time, 2:15 CA TIME in the afternoon, all reports on the horses are great. They came through it all like CHAMPS! So, there is much to be very, very thankful for!
From all reports, there is to be more of these high winds later today and tomorrow morning. By noon Friday, the intensity in them is to be rather small….much more like a normal breeze that would happen now and then.
Let’s hope our weather reports are accurate and everyone continues to be SAFE throughout this windstorm.
We will keep you posted. Here’s hoping the power, telephone, and internet services are restored as soon as possible to the ARCADIA AREA.
MY, MY…something ‘FUN” is always happening.
With Love,
Hugs to All~
Z

Dear Zenny: I am glad that Dottie and John (and Sophie!) are okay. I have seen photos on Facebook of the damage on the front and backside at Santa Anita. Doug O’Neill’s barn was basically destroyed and rumor was that YOUR JOHN’S barn lost its roof! Fortunately, no horses were hurt.
We usually have the wind bad here in Ontario when the Santa Anas blow but it wasn’t that strong last night. I was surprised to see all the damage in the San Gabriel Valley on the news this morning! My back fence is sagging and there were some loose boards in the cross fence shared with the neighbors who have a pit bull (THAT was fun to nail back together … we had to ask them to take the dog inside because we were afraid he would break through the fence) but NOTHING like what happened in Arcadia/Pasadena.
Everyone at Santa Anita and vicinity is in my thoughts as we face another night of winds (although they aren’t supposed to be as bad tonight). Hooves crossed!

Keep safe Dottie, John and all of Barn 55! I have been through high winds, including hurricanes, and it is scary. Beware of downed power lines.

I’m glad that we have good news from Dottie about Santa Anita – and other wind updates.
I’m glad that Zenny’s John updated us on Ebby – I was getting worried about her.
Today was a good day in regards to Zenyatta’s Family updates.
Be safe everyone!!!

MARGARET: Thank you so much.

High winds are the worst, I’m glad no one, human or equine, has been hurt.
I have been wondering something for a while. Do Jerry and Ann Moss have children and if so, are they involved in TB racing? I thought some of the CA fans might know.

Wow, saw videos on the news tonight about the terrible winds in the LA area. It didn’t resemble Southern CA, looked more like FL after a hurricane. Glad “your John” and Dottie are safe, but sorry to hear of the destruction at their home. Most of all, glad the horses are safe. I hear it is getting cold in your area, Zenny, so put on your earmuffs. ;)
Joan
That’s a great relief that everyone there is safe. I’m glad no horses were hurt. I hear more winds are due overnight, and I hope everyone remains safe. I’m so sorry for all the damage there.

Hi Zenyatta, It looks like Arcadia really took a beating with this huge wind that went through So. Calif. I heard Los Angeles also had many trees down. I wonder how it all went at Hollywood Park, your recent home? WE live in Lake Elsinore Ca. and had some tree damage but it was not severe. One more day of this and it will all be moveing East from what I see. I am happy to know that your John and sweet Dottie and the Dog are just fine. Take care and love you.

Dearest Dottie, Mr. Shirreffs & Sophie-
Thank you for taking time to let us know you are all okay. It was very generous and kind of you. I am so glad all of you and all of the horses are okay. I will say extra prayers that the winds calm down and tonight brings no more damage to anyone. You All are always in my thoughts & prayers in good times and the not so good ones…I love you all & I always will.
12th-heart (forever grateful to you)

Glad all are OK. It’s amazing no one, person or animal, were hurt. I used to live in both Arcadia & Pasadena, so my heart goes out to them. Stay safe everyone.

@Dottie–thank you so much for stopping to take time out to report to us. We had no idea such terrible weather was happening in your area. We’ve had high winds off and on for months, but nothing like that. Is there a part of the country that hasn’t been hit by weather aberrations?
Praise the Lord that no humans or horses were hurt. That is a miracle. So glad you are all safe.
@Laura J–I confess I’m smitten with Native Ivory. I LOVE his beautiful, thoughtful face. And he surely doesn’t look his age. He’s a lucky boy to have you helping him. I have a stupid question: what does an “in your poscket” horse do? I’ve just not heard that expression. I have a lot to learn!
Speaking of help, I’m praying for Marlene’s safety as she travels–safety for her and those precious horses. Thanks again to all of you who helped make this possible. This is the third time we’ve pulled it off.
@Z– we are so glad you are safe and were not in the storm. Sleep well, sweetie and Baby Z. We love you.

This is just precious. It is about a miniature horse named Tinker that rings the bell for the Salvation Army. It will make you smile.

Hello beautiful Zenyatta and Dottie,
Thanks for rescueing this very worried Z’s Dumpling from an anxiety attack. All the news I could get was so general and nothing specific about Santa Anita. I am so thankful that you posted, even though it was difficult and that you could let us know that Your John and Your Dottie were OK and that Barn 55 is OK. JAG, thanks for checking in and all the CA friends, Z-sters and Dumplings that could let us know how you were doing by checking in. I’ll remember you in my prayers for the next windy days and for the inevitable clean up and getting power back and repair of the damage. How well we know about all that from the Alabama tornados. Dottie, thank you for making this place we could meet and get to know and appreciate each other as friends. The downside is that during these weather events, we worry about each other as we do for our other family members.
@ All: I’m attaching a special link and I hope you will watch this blessing from me to each of you. (if the link doesn’t work, please copy and paste it into your browser.)

Some messages I just need to respond to are:
@Diana: Your remarks are always so on target. Thank you.
@ Margaret: TY for providing guidance to the Cloud Foundation and RT Fitch’s site. Both are excellent.
@ Barbara Wood: TY for explaining the very heart of EANDO by explaining that this is putting love to action.
@ Joan: TY for your wonderful and educational posting and especially for remembering to invite people to visit EANDO at http://www.Equi-Army-NDO.com.
@ Barbara Grimaldi: TY for sharing your heart felt thoughts about the importance of taking action before horse slaughter facilities are the reality that we then must try everything to get rid of all over again.
@ Lisa in TN: TY for sharing the tribute to dogs. It was so true and touching.
@ Jeannie:TY for reporting on the bill, S11-76 sponsored by Barbara Boxer and asking your senator to support it. We could all take a page from your book on that and contact our senators.
@ Abigail in Montreal:Please let the CHDC know that US horses are companion animals and horse meat is contaminated with drugs that are poisonous to people.
@ All: Thank you to all who were expressing an interest in stopping horse slaughter facilities from coming back to the US. I am so relieved that you are willing to try. It’s not over ’til it’s over! We can still take action. I want to invite everyone that was asking what to do and how to help to visit the EANDO site. You can scan through the comments about current news and topics. Be sure to check into Action Alerts for specific things you can do to help rescue efforts and other actions needed. If you have questions use the Comments to ask. I promise you will get replies. All are invited to come and look.

Dottie, Thank you for keeping us in the loop. My daughter is in La Cresenta and I thing it was pretty bad there, but nothing like you all endured. It never got as far south as San Diego, but we were waiting.
Praying the winds are over and everyone can get a good night sleep. So thankful all are safe. Sweet Dreams and God Bless.
on a happier note..it was great to get the update on E. Glad her cough is better…can’t wait to see her (when she is ready). I will be there.

@signofthetimes – Shutterfly did look awesome, but Meredith M-B is a great rider too!
@ Z Team – My friends in Altadena say they have NEVER seen winds like this. Sleep on the ground level until it’s over and stay safe!

We will be thinking of nothing but positive thoughts for all of your safety and that of the horses and everyone in the area. Be safe -we will be thinking of you. Hi Zenyatta!

@Kari…OMG Tinker is the cutest thing ever. Thanks for sharing.
@signofthetimes..thanks for the article. I for one, am very excited about some horses coming back next year. I think Stay Thirsty, Shackleford and several other will be very exciting 4 year olds, not to mention the girls…Zaza, Winter Memories and of course Royal Delta. Oh heck…I’m excited about seeing ALL of them.:)

Thank you Dottie and Z for keeping us abreast of the weather events – see, yet another hat for you to wear: Weather Reporter! I live in LA and had similar damage from the high winds, but know it was worse in John and Dottie’s area. Glad all are safe and that the horses stabled at the track are all OK. Hugs to all, Sheri

Dearest Z—So sorry for all that Dottie and John, Cynthia Holt and her mom, and others are going through with all the damage from the winds. It’s so good there were no serious injuries or deaths.
@Kim S—So sorry for the sad loss of Grace, the recent rescue at Equestrian, Inc. At least in her final days she received loving care and support. Good too that the media came to cover her story—she shall not have lived and died in vain. Thank you for mentioning the anti-slaughter website started as an “annex” to Z’s site.
@All who would like to join us at the above-referenced site, please come to http://www.equi-army-ndo.com
@Geogia—I loved your comment from #388 about how a filly for Z in March would unite the Mosses’ colors: pink for a girl and aquamarine for the (modern) birthstone!
@Laura J—(re #388) Bless you for sponsoring that nearly 28-year-old gelding Native Ivory! High hoof! Sweet story of how his pasture mate with a tail swishes flies off “Nate.”
@Kari “Joyful Victory” Bussell—–Thanks for the link to TINKER! We ALL needed that!
Allie in Texas
@Kari Bussell–What a great Christmas story…Thank you so much for sharing. I’m sure that Zenyatta would give Tinker a High Hoof for his service.

As I was reading later entries yesterday I read that some find it offensive that we talk about slaughter.
I’m sorry if I offend some–I guess just skip over my posts. This is an issue that should be near and dear to EVERY horseman.
When you buy a horse–it’s kinda like adopting a baby. You make certain promises at least to yourself to ALWAYS do right by your horse. I know situations change in a heartbeat. I lost a job that I cherished a couple of years ago. I thought I had details worked out so I could at least volunteer. First day of school–go home your not wanted or needed–essentially was what I was told not in those terms.
There is nothing wrong with calling a vet out to do proper euthanasia. Then you make another call and someone comes and gets the horse. I think in my state it’s about 400 dollars total. No more than a months board bill. The trick is to plan now before you get into trouble.
Slaughter IS NOT HUMANE EUTHANASIA. I don’t know who started that load of cow manure but it’s not.
I’m not going to tell you to,watch the grizzly videos. I will tell you about BANNED substances. Those drugs are banned for a reason. They call serious medical risks to people.
We don’t like it much when China sends us poisonous dog food and kids toys. Why would any country be happy when we are sending them known toxic horse meat to feed people? Yes, the drugs are out of the blood in 30 days but those drugs go into the meat that we eat. No one tells that do they? The drugs don’t stay in the liver as someone from the BLM recently told me. This is misinformation.
Folks I know you want this blog to stay about Zennie. And I can certainly understand why. We all have hopes and dreams for her. What color will the baby be? When will she foal? Boy or girl?
How about we compromise a bit here. I wanted to pass links to the WH petition for a month. I’ll go two weeks if all the naysayers will agree that that is fair. I gave two weeks.
And the horses could use everyone’s help. Take an extra moment or two while surfing the net and sign the petitions. One asks to bam horse slaughter and the other asks Obama to undo the damage he’s done (paraphrased). That’s all you have to do.
But if you are impressed to call the WH and let them have it with your disgust that’s fine too! Postcards telling the Pres to stand up to what he promised in 2008 would also be great. But none of those are demands or should make you feel pressured in any way.
I want you to participate BECAUSE you want to. BECAUSE you feel inspired to do so. And guess what if you are equally inspired not to get involved I promise not to bad mouth you or think ill
Kimberly
HiQueen, I live 5 min from Santa Anita. It was the worst wind EVER!!! My electricity just came on 30 min ago. I am sure the horses had to have been terribly frightened! Glad to hear they are all safe…. Nitey nite ZZZZ.
Margaret
Of you.
Sorry my iPad again!
Margaret
I think Tinker should be HOY!
