Good Morning,
I’m hearing from MY TEAM that ‘working the sale’ requires a great deal of effort, hard work, concentration, and energy! They get up very early each morning and leave for the sales grounds. By that time, David and his crew have already gone over ALL of the horses to be offered that day and come up with the ‘short list’ which Dottie, John and The Moss’ review. All aspects of the individuals are evaluated: conformation, size, pedigree, walk, and other physical qualities! Monitoring the horse’s overall temperament is also a part of this process.
Each horse on this list is inspected. If they make this ‘cut’, the veterinarian then examines the horse and his / her xrays in the repository. The VET also scopes the horse’s throat to be sure “all parts are working well’ for good breathing to take place. A good throat is essential for a race horse!
Once a horse passes all of these steps, the decision is made as to the fair market value of the horse. As many of you may know, at an auction people can get caught up in the bidding. MY TEAM tries to be very careful not to do this. They thoroughly appraise each horse before the bidding begins and really try to stay within those limits while bidding.
If all goes well and the hammer falls while a particular HIP they are bidding on is in the ring, they sign the ticket and he or she is now a part of the racing stable!
Attending a sale as this one, is really a fun process…but truthfully a great deal of hard work. Every moment of every day while there is totally consumed with the SALE. It is all about planning for the future and getting the RIGHT HORSE for the program!
As you can see, BABY REAGAN is resting up for all of the company and activity this week. I think she wants to stay up a bit late on Monday night to see my relative, HIP # 147 sell! I do too!
By the way, HRTV is carrying the first few sessions live on their programming schedule. Otherwise, the internet is the best way to follow the events.
HMMM! This baby thing is rather interesting to ME! Reagan was born on March 7th, 2011. That is about the time MY BABY is due in 2012! I just didn’t realize human babies are so small! They told ME my baby will weigh about 125 pounds or so when he/she is born.) This becoming a MOM is really a fascinating process! I’m learning!
Enjoy the week, the racing, and the sales! Dottie is attending them this week and also spending time visiting with ME! When she returns home, we will update you on all of the action. She also promises that MY JOHN will take some terrific photos of ME to share with all of you!
With Love,
Hugs to All~(To my dear fan who made the Z BLANKET as a thank you….THANK YOU! It is absolutely priceless!)

Dear Eveline:
How wonderful that you got to meet Mattie. I’ve only seen him on Oprah’s show. He truly was an old soul in a child’s body. He wrote beautifully. Hugs, J.B.

Good evening Queen Z! (remember California time? It is still evening here!) Love that blanket! You (and Dottie) sure do keep us up to date! :)
@Kendra: how great to hear about your wonderful “farms” visit! That will stay with you for a long, long time.
@Susan in TN: so very sorry. AS Lil from KY said, take your time.
@Judy Berube: thanks for the “Inky-S. Haskin” link–I had forgotten some of his story, but do remember I liked him in that Derby. His was definitely a “feel good” story.
Take care Ms. Z…we look forward to your 125lb Bundle of Joy next year!!
Kari Bussell
@Kendra- Thank you for sharing about your trip. What day were you at the Kentucky Horse Park? I was there Labor Day afternoon. I have family & loved ones in KY…It was a very last minute visit. It is only a 3 hour drive for us. Lexington has always been one of my favorite places on earth…. It was great to see the Great Champions they have there especially Cigar,(I had to see him again) Funny Cide & Go For Gin…
For those who have never been there, they have golf carts for people who can’t do all the walking..My husband bought the last Zenyatta breyer they had displayed for me…
I played with a beautiful, precious Arabian named Dancer until I wore us both out-LOL
I was too tired to stay for the shows. Did you get to see them?..I hope your trip brought you great joy with memories of joy for years to come..
My husband shot this very brief video of Cigar if you are interested…It is just raw footage. If I did him to music obvious choice would be “Bad to the Bone.” He was being a stinker boy as always…
Cigar 9-6-11 for JAG-(she stalks him & his web camfor one good shot daily)-

Dear Anne from Paramount, CA.:

Dear Kari: Hoping lightening will strike twice, I will try to provide a link regarding the great BOSTON: Your grandson should be very proud of his name’s heritage.

Dear Zenny, glad you got some quality time with your wonderful Dottie and company! Goodnight and sweet dreams!
@Susan in TN: Thoughts and prayers to you and your family. Take care!
@Kari Bussell: Thanks for the link about Invisible Ink. What a wonderfully sweet and sad article. RIP “Inky”.
To all: Enjoying the great banter regarding the yearling sales!!
All the best to everyone! Hugs!

Correction: Thanks, Kari, for the heads-up on Invisible Ink, and thank you to Judy Berube for the link to Steve H.’s touching article about Inky. What a fighter who died much too soon.
Goodnight All!

@Susan in TN – Hope you’re ok. Come back and talk about it when you’re ready.
@Terry Crow – I didn’t think I deserve it, but the fact I’m glad to be “in” the club likely demonstrates the point. I like today’s redneck jokes, and the “Taps” info.
@everyone – I have been watching a lot of 9/11 footage and stories, like I never felt like 10 yrs. ago. Amazing stuff. And the whole building of the Memorial and new towers is extraordinary, sad, and beautiful. The fact that they adjusted the new location of Tower 2, so that on Sept. 11 every year, there will be sunlight (no shadow) on the site of the original towers — it really got to me, that they thought about the details that much.

@ LauraJ,
.
Great info for the group, but one small note. Nasrullah was a bay and thus did not pass on any grey genes to his offspring. Grey is dominant and if a horse inherits the gene from a parent, it will be expressed and be grey. All grey horses must have atleast one grey parent. If a horse carries 2 copies of the gene (GG), all of their offspring will be grey. If they carry one copy (Gg), offpsring may be grey or another color :-)

I cannot believe that Balance’s baby only sold for $750,000!!!!!
Especially Horses
@Kari Bussell: Is Cigar still intact or did they geld him before sending him to the Kentucky Horse Park? BTW, thanks for the short clip.
Alene

Hi lovely Z; This pic of small baby Reagan is precious, but your 125 pounder will be precious too! The insight of the sales is so interesting. As I understood things, after careful consideration and selection of certain horses, the exam to the horses is done prior to any bidding takes place and not after? Am I right Z?
I’d be excited but stressed for sure. Wishing Dottie & team success and can’t wait to see new pics of you!!
love you with 2 kisses on your soft nose, one for baby z

Cigar is most definitely NOT a gelding ;-)
.
In the early years, he was still test bred once a year by the insurance company to see if there was any improvement in his situation.

Once more Z; I spent time watching programs of 9-11. I think it was a good thing for all of us to be reminded of all who died, those who sacrified their lives, the hell that the act of war caused. I don’t have TVG or HRTV but I’ll be reading my Bloodhorse about the sales etc! I’ll see some great thoroughbreds in March at Ocala sales though. love you and kisses (again)

@judy berube: Sorry, Judy. I did not see your earlier post to Kari re the BOSTON link. What a horse!
@ENSIGN: Thank you very much for the additonal information concerning grays (or greys). Any way one spells it, they are magcal!
Especially Horses
@Ensign. Thanks for the quick response. LOL. I am giggling as I type this. I knew he WASN’T a gelding when he raced, but have to admit I was curious about his “fate” and the protocol for living at the KHP. So I gather by your comment that maybe they aren’t bothering “testing” him anymore? Believe me, I wish there were little Cigar’s out there. Hey I even bought the replica of his horse van and of course I have the book Cigar America’s Horse.

@Ensign. BTW it is nice to see your “monogram” at this site again.

@Vicki B, Yes a very sad day!! A friend of mine lost her sister on flight 11. Her name is now on the North Memorial Pool site. It is quite beautiful there I think.
I hope to visit some day soon.

Dear Z,
Good morning. Today’s your visit with your beloved CA Team? Have a great time. Love you and love to all of you, Judy and Russ

Dear Vicki B.:
I felt the same way when the architect was describing how the building was designed to point down at the site and how every year on 9/11 the sun’s light will illuminate the spot. Incredible. Hugs, J.B.

Dear Cynthia:
Not to worry. This way Kari B. can read it twice. Hugs, J.B.

Dear Ensign:
Thank you for your knowledgeable info on grays/greys. Hugs, J.B.
