Good Morning,
I’m hearing from MY TEAM that ‘working the sale’ requires a great deal of effort, hard work, concentration, and energy! They get up very early each morning and leave for the sales grounds. By that time, David and his crew have already gone over ALL of the horses to be offered that day and come up with the ‘short list’ which Dottie, John and The Moss’ review. All aspects of the individuals are evaluated: conformation, size, pedigree, walk, and other physical qualities! Monitoring the horse’s overall temperament is also a part of this process.
Each horse on this list is inspected. If they make this ‘cut’, the veterinarian then examines the horse and his / her xrays in the repository. The VET also scopes the horse’s throat to be sure “all parts are working well’ for good breathing to take place. A good throat is essential for a race horse!
Once a horse passes all of these steps, the decision is made as to the fair market value of the horse. As many of you may know, at an auction people can get caught up in the bidding. MY TEAM tries to be very careful not to do this. They thoroughly appraise each horse before the bidding begins and really try to stay within those limits while bidding.
If all goes well and the hammer falls while a particular HIP they are bidding on is in the ring, they sign the ticket and he or she is now a part of the racing stable!
Attending a sale as this one, is really a fun process…but truthfully a great deal of hard work. Every moment of every day while there is totally consumed with the SALE. It is all about planning for the future and getting the RIGHT HORSE for the program!
As you can see, BABY REAGAN is resting up for all of the company and activity this week. I think she wants to stay up a bit late on Monday night to see my relative, HIP # 147 sell! I do too!
By the way, HRTV is carrying the first few sessions live on their programming schedule. Otherwise, the internet is the best way to follow the events.
HMMM! This baby thing is rather interesting to ME! Reagan was born on March 7th, 2011. That is about the time MY BABY is due in 2012! I just didn’t realize human babies are so small! They told ME my baby will weigh about 125 pounds or so when he/she is born.) This becoming a MOM is really a fascinating process! I’m learning!
Enjoy the week, the racing, and the sales! Dottie is attending them this week and also spending time visiting with ME! When she returns home, we will update you on all of the action. She also promises that MY JOHN will take some terrific photos of ME to share with all of you!
With Love,
Hugs to All~(To my dear fan who made the Z BLANKET as a thank you….THANK YOU! It is absolutely priceless!)

I’ve never been good at remembering jokes, but for some reason this one has stayed with me for a number of years: A guy got up early one winter morning to go out to the country to his favorite lake to do some winter fishing. When he arrived at the lake, he realized he had left his axe at home. He remembered passing a farm so decided to go ask the farmer if he could borrow his axe. The farmer had just finished his breakfast and answered the knock at the door. The guy explained his plight and the farmer , who was a little skeptical, decided he would take a chance and loaned the guy his axe. The guy thanked him and left and the farmer started his day. Lunch time came and the guy hadn’t come back with the axe, but the farmer wasn’t too worried as it was still early. When supper time came the farmer was getting angry, mostly at himself for loaning out his good axe to a stranger. The farmer was getting ready to call it a day, figuring he would never see his axe again, when there was a knock at the door and there was the guy returning the axe. The farmer was very relieved and asked the guy how the fishing had been. The guy said, “Fishing? I just got the boat on the lake.”

@Lil in KY– we were with you in spirit, but we’d rather have been with you in body! I’m so glad to got to go.
@signofthetimes–You’re probably right, but I think if they’d let Shackleford run his race rather than thinking about the money, then the money would follow. He is so adorable.
@Kari Bussell-I’m so sorry the Vols didn’t win today. I was pulling for them.
2Marty R and Terry Crow–too cute!
@Abigail from Montreal–I’ve never taken French, but from what I do know, that is the way I thought it should be pronounced. I’ve heard some announcers mangle her name. Thanks for filling us in. We learn so much from you!
Barbara Wood
@Shari Voltz–LOVE the Peppermint Pals. Thank you so much for sharing. And I love the reporting, similar to what Z. gives us by way of Dottie.
Boy, what a race Winter memories ran. Just beautiful. Reminds me of OUR Z.
Dearest Z–we probably won’t get more news from you until Monday, but I’ll bet you’ll be full of it then. Sleep well, and take care of Baby Z. for us. Love you always.

Dear Shari Voltz:
Thank you so much for the article and videos of Serengeti and Mistletoe. They are both gorgeous. Mistletoe seems to like her Jolly Ball very much. What lucky children to have this wonderful experience because of you. You really are a special teacher. These children are learning to love school, do their work and never give up. All great life lessons. Hugs, J.B.

So agree with you about Shack. He is so talented
And when the equine athletes are allowed to run their
races and be themselves the do make money. I am
Not sure how much clearer he can be other than not
To leave the starting gate or run last like Coil did. I hear
Coil dispized the track. The are animals, but they have
Horse feelings that we humans need to translate to make
Them happy.

That Dubai World Cup of Cigar’s was sheer determination,
Heart and courage. An awesome race. I bet he was a handful
To ride, very very strong.
That kick of Winter Memories could definately
Unseat a less experienced rider. She looked so
Much like Zenny, all blocked in and no ware to go,
Such a patient and confident jockey. It is so interesting
As to what a rider communicates by their feelings, what
The horse picks up and then how the horse performs.
She was waiting for an opening and ready to go,
Such great teamwork and connection.

@Annmaria & @Abigail from Montreal – I found a link for French pronunciation, you can click on the little arrow, and hear someone pronounce her name, much like your phonetic, Abigail: http://www.forvo.com/word/vertigineux/

And here is the pronunciation link (arrow) for Ebby’s name: http://www.forvo.com/search/Eblouissante/

Like a number of you said, Winter Memories blow-by at the end was thrilling! and reminded me of Zenny. Winter Memories looked so proud in her walk, afterwards.

I’m really late in announcing this, but the Saturday Photo Blog on today’s Horse and Man blog has some of the CUTEST photos you’ll ever see—and an amazing story of a darling warthog who grabs a pillow for his head as he spends chilly nights dozing in front of a fireplace. Also, a dramatic view of the Texas wildfires, and an as yet unidentified mule rescued from the same. If you go to the site later, you’ll have to scroll down to find Saturday’s entry. horseandman.com

So enjoyed reading and catching up on everyone. Exciting that Jerry and Ann have some new babies. Hope one or two end up in our Dear John’s loving care.
Loved Winter Memories performance today…wow when she kicked it in..she looked like she was gliding and everyone else was in the sand.
Another race or pre race I enjoyed was watching a 4 yr old gelding decide that the track was his play gound for quite a while. I know just how dangerous it can be for a lose horse on the track, but this guy got lose before going into the gate and he did not look to be the least bit freaked out. It looked like a big game as he avoided everyone trying to get him. He was having a pleasurly gallop around the track, looking around…no panic. I think if they can get him into the gate next time…he might do ok. Sure seems at home out there. :) Change on Commmand …I believe is his name and he was a first time starter.
On another note…some of you may remember the little mare that needed to be rescued and I was able to help with. She has a great new home and loving family, then there was a gelding that I got to help get,and he ended up being kept by his foster family. He is also happy and safe. Yesterday, I spoke to someone who works at the place I take my dog for grooming and puppy day care a few days a week. (so he is not stuck at home while I work..it’s like Disneyland to him). Anyway…she has a place in Ramona and we are going to get together next week to see if she might be able to take in a couple of horses. Then will need to start looking for someone who will be willing to help retrain these guys. I showed and schooled quarter horses, but feel I am getting to old and it’s been to long past for me to be able to do a good job on my own. But…I can get them care, and do alot of the ground work. Most of all…I can love them. So…it’s probably a long shot for everything to fall into place. But…just maybe.
Love and prayer to and for all. Good night

to: “S” in San Diego. Today (Sat) in the paper there was a story in the North County Times about an approx. 15 year old abandoned mare in a field out in Murrietta/or somewhere in Riverside County. The animal control people said they got approx 1 call a week about an abandoned horse. The officer said she was a sweetheart of a mare, went right over to them and went right into the van willingly. They will be caring for her. She was thin but really very pretty. I hope they can do right by her. It is very sad to think this happens. Hopefully you can find the article on the internet website of the North County Times. It would be so wonderful if a home could be found for her. Thanks for what you do with rescue and finding homes.
I live on a city street in Carlsbad so not an option or I would have one or two .
Take care.

@S in San Diego–High hoof to you on your rescue successes and your future rescue plans! And it would be lovely–in every sense of the word–if YOU could take the mare Delrene just posted about. (Thanks for posting, Delrene!)

@S in San Diego—–admirable work you are doing
@ Vicki B—-Thank you so much for the French link! I have been taking a French class for about a month now—–BUT, I am not that far along, or good enough to pronounce those names, now I will practice. I had written the nam
