Good Morning,
I’m hearing from MY TEAM that ‘working the sale’ requires a great deal of effort, hard work, concentration, and energy! They get up very early each morning and leave for the sales grounds. By that time, David and his crew have already gone over ALL of the horses to be offered that day and come up with the ‘short list’ which Dottie, John and The Moss’ review. All aspects of the individuals are evaluated: conformation, size, pedigree, walk, and other physical qualities! Monitoring the horse’s overall temperament is also a part of this process.
Each horse on this list is inspected. If they make this ‘cut’, the veterinarian then examines the horse and his / her xrays in the repository. The VET also scopes the horse’s throat to be sure “all parts are working well’ for good breathing to take place. A good throat is essential for a race horse!
Once a horse passes all of these steps, the decision is made as to the fair market value of the horse. As many of you may know, at an auction people can get caught up in the bidding. MY TEAM tries to be very careful not to do this. They thoroughly appraise each horse before the bidding begins and really try to stay within those limits while bidding.
If all goes well and the hammer falls while a particular HIP they are bidding on is in the ring, they sign the ticket and he or she is now a part of the racing stable!
Attending a sale as this one, is really a fun process…but truthfully a great deal of hard work. Every moment of every day while there is totally consumed with the SALE. It is all about planning for the future and getting the RIGHT HORSE for the program!
As you can see, BABY REAGAN is resting up for all of the company and activity this week. I think she wants to stay up a bit late on Monday night to see my relative, HIP # 147 sell! I do too!
By the way, HRTV is carrying the first few sessions live on their programming schedule. Otherwise, the internet is the best way to follow the events.
HMMM! This baby thing is rather interesting to ME! Reagan was born on March 7th, 2011. That is about the time MY BABY is due in 2012! I just didn’t realize human babies are so small! They told ME my baby will weigh about 125 pounds or so when he/she is born.) This becoming a MOM is really a fascinating process! I’m learning!
Enjoy the week, the racing, and the sales! Dottie is attending them this week and also spending time visiting with ME! When she returns home, we will update you on all of the action. She also promises that MY JOHN will take some terrific photos of ME to share with all of you!
With Love,
Hugs to All~(To my dear fan who made the Z BLANKET as a thank you….THANK YOU! It is absolutely priceless!)

@Beth Buckley- The withdrawls are tough, but we all just need a little more patience while Dottie is “on location”. I’m sure she will come back with great tales from Zenyatta and pictures, too. If only Zenyatta’s Dear John could bottle his patience, I’m sure there would be a run on it. Look what emerged from it in the accomplishments of Queen Z.

Catching up on the posts. @Judy Berube-Quack,quack. @Denise in AZ-I heard the line about Dale Earnhardt, but not the rest of the info on the USRSF. Sorry about the denephew stuff. It never occurred to me that you had been bombarded with it all these years. @Kari Bussell-Thanks for the link to Smokey. He looks like he could take UGA without much of a problem. @Vicki B-Thanks for the info on Annie. Yes, I have watched The Civil War at least 10 times. It is amazing what can be done with old photographs. James is buried in Kearney, Missouri, in a little graveyard on the edge of town. There is no fence around it and the James family graves are close to the outside. It is amazing to me that no vandalism has taken place there. When I visited the Civil War battlefield in Lexington, Missouri I asked the docent if Quantrill had ever gotten that far. She said to me “Oh, you mean the partisans,” pronounced like party-sands. As I said, I would have loved to have had a conversation with your grandfather. Quantrill’s men were responsible for killing just about every male in Lawrence, Kansas early in the war. Lawrence is where the University of Kansas is now. @signofthetimes-In my opinion, there is no comparison. Zenyatta ran the greatest losing race ever while the distance of the race mentioned was a problem for Seattle Slew. Slew was a great horse, no doubt. However, the only time I saw him run he was beaten soundly by J.O. Tobin, a vastly underrated horse, at Hollywood Park. You might call it a butt kicking. I do not believe that any man’s horse could have beaten Zenyatta that bad. So, I guess my opinion is that the talking heads were wrong. A few for today-You might be a redneck if you’ve ever financed a tattoo. You might be a redneck if you go Christmas shopping for your mom, sister and girlfriend and only need to buy one gift. Will post a joke later.
Cynthia H.
@Terry Crow: I clutch you to my withered bosom. You mention one of my three most beloved horses of all-time, the “vastly under-rated” J.O. Tobin. The 1977 Swaps Stakes was one of the most stellar days of my racing career! For dusting-off his name and bringing that memory to life, I hereby reward you with a companion ticket tomorrow to the traditional Polish Harvest Festival of Dozynki, held in nearby Yorba Linda. We will attend in jocular spirit, sup well on authentic Polish redneck food of kazanka (blood sausage), golabki (cabbage rolls), nalesniki (blintzes); and, in special recognition of our status in Z-land, that most scrumptious of all native dumplings—the revered PIEROGI! I have no doubt, that by the end of the day, you will be crowned the “King of the Dozynki,” in light of your seemingly endless supply of side-splitters. The Poles are the first to laugh, and often the last (especially at themselves).

@KARI BUSSELL – saw your note asking for information on Boston for a namesake. I found the information on him in The History of Horse Racing by Roger Longrigg. I would quote it; however, there is strong language about not doing so. But, without doing so, Boston was the son of Sir Arch’s son Timoleon, and bred in 1933 in Virginia. The name wasn’t the city but the game of Boston, after being won in a card game. He won at three and was later known as “Old Whitenose,” At six he won eight races in a row. He retired in 1841 as a sire then later that year won four of four races. the book also mentions hat he was the sire of Lexington (1850) and Lecomte, who had a number of exciting races. There is a full-page color picture of Lexington, who evidently was quite a horse.
I enjoyed reading about Boston, hope you do too.
Great post by our Z, it is so interesting to learn more about the sales. It would be a bad place for me since I talk with my hands so much.
Wishing you a wonderful evening in Kentucky, Zenyatta, our dreams are with you.

Hi there EVERYONE — and that means you, my sweet Zenny!
The Mosses also bought a Leroidesanimaux COLT for $250,000….I just love that they’re investing in Leroy — great horse, great pedigree!

AND, they also bought a HARD SPUN colt @ $230,000.

@Abigail from Montreal: Love the HARD SPUN’S! I remember the dam, COOKIN VICKIE, as a hard-knocking, gritty little racemare, who didn’t have an ounce of quit in her. There is a very toucing story behind her name, also. What a combination! Will follow this wise purchase with great interest.

@DJ–as always, thanks for the prayer. Just got back from a wondersful movie, “Seven Days in Utopia”. It was made in Texas, stars Robert Duvall(wonderful as always), and also has a few horses in it. A win, win win, for me!

@Trina & Doreen–Thank you for posting the link to the video of the Mosses & John Sherriffs at UK. When I first met the Mosses in the reception line, I was wearing(what else) my Zenyatta cap, they said, OH, we love that cap! I asked Ann if they had seen ZEN yet, she said, Yes indeed we’ve seen her & she is looking great& has that little baby bump and she’s a little more golden.
During the seminar, there were some questions from students in the back of the room, but I could not hear them as they were not talking into a mike.
Dottie & John, who arrived late was well received with a lot of applause. I talked with Dottie after the seminar & thanked her for all the work she does with Zenny’s website. She noticed that I was wearing my dumpling tag and said,OOOh, you’re a dumpling! & hugged me.
I can’t add much more than what the video & article told you. Just want to say I wish ALL Dumplings could have been there!

Zenny, I am having some withdrawls not hearing from you for most of the week. We know you and the wonderful Dottie have been busy so we will try to practice patience, which YOUR John has in abundance, until the next diary entry. You are still on everyone’s mind. I took a tour of the west last week and your name came up quite often. You are and always be “The Queen”.

“wonderful”–aaugh! forgot to proofread!

Hi there Zenyatta and Dottie.
I would like to ask a favor. For those of us not savvy in French can you tell us how to pronounce Vertigineux?
Have a great day and thank you so much for all you both do!

Wish they would take Shackelford back to a mile
And make him happy. All these losses are really
Going to affect his self-esteem and I think that
Was seen in his last race.

Dear friends: some of you may wonder why we created another website to help our horses…sadly, here’s why:
As of 09/01/2011, we have lost 50,127 equines to slaughter (up 10,107 from 2010 ytd)
The economy is forcing good people to give up their horses because they just cannot afford them anymore. Then there are the not-so-good people who ignore responsibility and sell these innocents to kill buyers for a few bucks…
Please understand that we love our horses and are trying to join with other groups to save them…we are all dumplings on the site who, inspired by our Queen, want justice and mercy for her brothers and sisters….thank you
Especially Horses
Winter Memories…well done, well done.
