Good Morning,
I’m hearing from MY TEAM that ‘working the sale’ requires a great deal of effort, hard work, concentration, and energy! They get up very early each morning and leave for the sales grounds. By that time, David and his crew have already gone over ALL of the horses to be offered that day and come up with the ‘short list’ which Dottie, John and The Moss’ review. All aspects of the individuals are evaluated: conformation, size, pedigree, walk, and other physical qualities! Monitoring the horse’s overall temperament is also a part of this process.
Each horse on this list is inspected. If they make this ‘cut’, the veterinarian then examines the horse and his / her xrays in the repository. The VET also scopes the horse’s throat to be sure “all parts are working well’ for good breathing to take place. A good throat is essential for a race horse!
Once a horse passes all of these steps, the decision is made as to the fair market value of the horse. As many of you may know, at an auction people can get caught up in the bidding. MY TEAM tries to be very careful not to do this. They thoroughly appraise each horse before the bidding begins and really try to stay within those limits while bidding.
If all goes well and the hammer falls while a particular HIP they are bidding on is in the ring, they sign the ticket and he or she is now a part of the racing stable!
Attending a sale as this one, is really a fun process…but truthfully a great deal of hard work. Every moment of every day while there is totally consumed with the SALE. It is all about planning for the future and getting the RIGHT HORSE for the program!
As you can see, BABY REAGAN is resting up for all of the company and activity this week. I think she wants to stay up a bit late on Monday night to see my relative, HIP # 147 sell! I do too!
By the way, HRTV is carrying the first few sessions live on their programming schedule. Otherwise, the internet is the best way to follow the events.
HMMM! This baby thing is rather interesting to ME! Reagan was born on March 7th, 2011. That is about the time MY BABY is due in 2012! I just didn’t realize human babies are so small! They told ME my baby will weigh about 125 pounds or so when he/she is born.) This becoming a MOM is really a fascinating process! I’m learning!
Enjoy the week, the racing, and the sales! Dottie is attending them this week and also spending time visiting with ME! When she returns home, we will update you on all of the action. She also promises that MY JOHN will take some terrific photos of ME to share with all of you!
With Love,
Hugs to All~(To my dear fan who made the Z BLANKET as a thank you….THANK YOU! It is absolutely priceless!)

@Kari Bussell-You have humbled me before and you have done it again. I really don’t know what to say. I am quite familiar with General Gordon. He is the officer who surrendered what was left of the Army of Northern Virginia to General Joshua Chamberlain at Appomatox after the surrender was signed. This is a very famous incident. The union troops were ordered to come to attention when the confederates appeared and General Gordon ordered his troops to respond in kind. This scene has been depicted in many paintings. The things that your might consider bad happened a long time ago and the items you mention have a great deal of value, both sentimental and otherwise. I would not insult you by refusing your gift. I can assure you that the material will have a proper home with me. I do not know how to contact you by FB or you tube. All I can say is that I am overwhelmed. Thank you seems so inadequate.

@ Susan in TN – your right, no one on this site thinks it’s strange that our fur baby’s are our family. We also will never get tired of hearing stories about Tiny, keep them coming. So sorry for your loss and thanks for sharing him with us.
Denise in AZ
@Susan in TN– I am so truly sorry you lost your pal.. and like so many of us here, I lost my pal a year ago- and still miss Anchorage everyday. No words can help, I know, but he will always be in your heart. Hugs, Denise

@ everyone, I picked up 2 horse decals from the website called NickerStickers https://www.nickerstickers.com/horses.html
I have a Thoroughbred on the car rear window that is my Zenyatta with Mike….
@Susan in TN, they also carry Dog decals, they have Saint Bernard decals. I thought maybe this might help with your loss???

@Laura J, Poor George Washington! What a sad sad ending to his great career…I did not watch any racing on TV for a while after that Breeders Cup.

@Susan in TN-tears are flowing down my face. You were worried your words did not capture the bond or the specialness Tiny brought to your world. I could feel your words- the loss, sadness & love. My heart goes out to you. As much as you needed Tiny, he needed you. And you gave him such a wonderful home with many adventures. All my sympathy. I so understand.
Abigail from Montreal
@ Susan in TN: I have been absent because I was working on the terrible task of liquidating my former mother-in-law’s possessions (“former” because I divorced her son two decades ago but she is my son’s granny & we all stayed close). So I have missed all of you and been out of the conversation, in that sense. Susan — my heart weeps for your loss. I am sorry to send my sympathies so late but they are sincere, as I know you will know. I sometimes talk about Jericho in these posts & on THE VAULT when I wrote about Your Host. He is the love of my life, a senior of 11.5 years now. I know I will feel just the way you do today when his time comes. I lost my cat, Kali, the way Tiny died. It was all over in a matter of seconds and the suddenness seemed to make it so much worse. Today, 2 years later, I have realized that it was a blessing insofar as there was no suffering. At the time, George Bernard Shaw’s words (later quoted by Gretchen Jackson when Barbaro died) were so very comforting: “Grief is the price we pay for love.”
I am sending you a HUGE hug, Susan. And Jericho & I will donate to our local SPCA in Tiny’s name. Much love, your friend Abigail

@Susan in TN: I am sorry to hear about the loss of your four-legged fur baby. I have experienced the same loss in the past and I know it is not easy. I hope you are able to eventually adjust to the loss and feel better soon.

@Trina Nagele-Thank you. Don is about the same, which I guess is a good thing. Beats the alternative. @Judy Berube-Boston Custer died at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. @Cynthia H-Once you have nominated to the redneck club, you cannot refuse induction. Kari Bussell is your sponsor. I think I know what you guys mean when you say the 12th. For her, I hope the poets never run out of rhymes. @Kari Bussell-Done. See the last message. @Barbara Wood-I also enjoyed Jeff Shaara’s book about the Mexican-American war, I believe that it was titled Gone For Soldiers. A ,lot of future civil war commanders, on both sides, fought in that conflict. @Kim S and signofthetimes-Glad you enjoyed the joke. @Lil from KY-You mean they aren’t? @Susan in TN-My old hound would be honored to know that you thought of her. Her name was Corrie and everybody and everything was her friend. She and Tiny are probably already great pals. @Vicki B-A true redneck goes fishing in his/her bathtub while taking a bath. @All, but especially redneck club members–You might be a redneck if you ever stole clothes from a scarecrow. You might be a redneck if your dog cannot watch you eat without gagging. You might be a redneck if your parrot keeps repeating “Open up, police!” Will post a joke later.

@Susan in TN–I’m sure you’ll see Tiny at the Rainbow Bridge. It was so fortunate that you found each other when you did. Here is a link about Rainbow Bridge (from a Dalmatian site but that doesn’t matter):

@Terry Crow: Were it not for Kari’s sponsorship, I might have to be hauled kicking and screaming to a redneck induction. When it comes to Kari, this “poet” (her term), ran out of rhymes around the 5th.
@Kari: Thank you for your always kind and loving words. A large portion of my heart will always be in Beantown. 12th.
@Karen Gogue: Peace and love.
Terry Crow
@Suzanne G–Thanks so much for the link to Rainbow Bridge. Everybody who loves a pet should read this. @Cynthia H-I’m not sure now. When you indicate 12th, are you referring to the old Johnny Mathis song?

@Terry Crow: Johnny Mathis version. Kari created an exquisitely haunting video to that song, which even elicited the comment of “that was beautiful,” from John Shirreffs. I will try and post the link, with apologies to Trina if I do it incorrectly, for the many friends of Kari who love her and treasure the gift of her talent:

@Laura J: Thank you for the insight on the Insurance Policy Standard and why the 20 were tested. I have no doubt that his connections tried everything under the sun in an attempt to reverse his infertility problems. This whole conversation brought to mind Triple Crown winner Assault. I thought I remembered (from my younger days when I read every Thoroughbred related book in existence) that Assault was infertile but the King Ranch allowed him to pasture breed with some King Ranch Quarter Horse mares. I did a Goggle search to see if I was remembering correctly and found the following: When plans were made for Assault to be retired to stud, tests revealed that he was sterile. Returned to Texas, he was turned out with eight Quarter Horse mares, and to the astonishment of his owners, Assault was blessed with two sons and two daughters in the spring of 1951. He also returned to the races, scoring a first, a second, and a third in three starts and raising his total earnings to $675,470 before he was permanently retired. Despite the Quarter Horse foals, Assault was still unable to get a thoroughbred mare in foal, and he lived out the rest of his life as a pensioner. When Assault passed away on September 2, 1971, he was buried at the spacious King Ranch where he was foaled.

Maybe Cigar should be allowed to pasture breed. Just being tongue-in-cheek, I know how risky that would be.

If the 16 mares went to term with their pregnancies. Cigar should have
A few off spring. Anyone know how to find that information?
Perhaps our online expert Judy B????

I am so, so sorry to hear of his sudden passing. As with most on this site, I totally understand what a huge loss this is for you and your family. With love, hugs, and deepest sympathy, your z friend, Deborah.
@Kari B…more tears. Such a beautiful, touching video. You are such a giving, loving spirit. Your posts just radiate joy and love.
@Ingrid…Happy Birthday a bit late! Hope you had a wonderful day!

Cigar proved sterile and now lives at the Kentucky Horse Park’s Hall of Champions. Until Curlin surpassed him in 2008, Cigar was America’s richest racehorse. Cigar now ranks second in lifetime earnings, although it must be noted that the size of purses in Cigar’s day were smaller than in Curlin’s.

Dear Signofthetimes:
Look who’s Cigar’s Great Grandfather on his
Sire’s side.
Sharon Call
AAbigail from Montreal. I look back on the death of Winston, my animal shelter puppy that I had for 15-1/2 years and it took a year of his deterioration before I realized that I was keeping him alive for me and not for him. When I realized that, I took him to the vet and had him put to sleep. That was the longest drive I’ve ever made but not as long as that year he spent going from just not feeling well to suffering. I have yet to forgive myself for making him do that and I’ll never put another animal through that just so that I don’t have to face the inevitable. Sometimes I think that the hardest decision to make is the decision to be kind to these wonderful lives that love us so much and give us everything that they have. I know you realize what I’m saying and I know that Susan will realize it as well once the first onslaught of grief has passed. Her Tiny left this earth happy and what more could you ask for these precious beings.
Terry Crow
@Cynthia H-Thank you. I thought that is what you guys meant when you indicated 12th on your post. One of the last verses in that song is “I”ll love you until the poets run out of rhymes, until the 12th of never.” etc. That is what I meant when I said that for Kari I hope the poets never run out of rhymes. Today’s joke–A man in a bar sees an old friend at a table drinking by himself. He goes over to the friend and says “You look terrible. What’s the problem?” The friend said “My mother died in June and left me $25,000.” “Gee, that’s tough,” said the man. “Then in July,” his friend went on, my father died and left me $90,000.” The man replied “Wow. Two parents in two months. No wonder you’re depressed.” The friend went on “And, last month my aunt died and left me $15,000.” “This is terrible,” said the man, “You must really feel awful.” The man then said, “Then this month comes along and so far absolutely nothing.”

Dear Signofthetimes:
Sorry, I didn’t scroll up far enough before to see the post about the 36 mares bred to Cigar and only 20 tested. I don’t know how we could find out if any of the 16 that were not tested were found to be in foal. I have to think, though, that if any one of them foaled a colt or filly by Cigar that would have been big news in Bloodhorse, DRF or Thoroughbred Times. There are no progeny listed on his Pedigree Query page under reports. So I have to think he has no offspring. Hugs, J.B.
