Happy Friday Dear Friends,
It truly has been an eventful week. The 2 primary summer race meets completed their sessions…and now both Belmont Park and Fairplex open their individual meets. Good Luck to All!
Fairplex is a lovely ‘fair’ meet which runs on a ‘bullring’ race course. This means that the oval is a 5/8ths mile track. They do not have a grass course. All races are run on the main track. Belmont Park is beginning their fall meet and they will offer several major stakes and prep races for the Breeders’ Cup. When the Santa Anita Autumn Meet begins on September 30th…they will have the same quality for their stakes program. The fall racing action is really heating up!
Also, on Sunday, the KEENELAND SEPTEMBER YEARLING SALE begins. The sale will open with 2 evening sessions…which begin at 7 p.m. Eastern Time. These 2 sessions are offering some very fashionably bred yearlings. They are listed in BOOK ONE of the sales catalogs.
When a sale is going to take place, the sales company, Keeneland in this case, prepares a ‘SALES CATALOG’. The catalog provides you with all of the pertinent information relating to the sale and the conditions for the sale. It then lists the horses by HIP NUMBER starting with Hip #1. This way when you are reviewing the catalog, you use this number to find all of the information on a particular horse, the date it is being offered during the sale, and all of it’s detailed pedigree information.
HIP # 147 is of special interest to ME! The colt is a very close relative of mine. He is by STREET CRY (IRE)…my sire…and out of BALANCE. She is my 1/2 sister by Thunder Gulch. What makes us 1/2 sisters is that we have the same MOTHER…VERTIGINEUX.
This colt sells on Monday evening. The bidding on him will be very exciting to watch. You may also follow the activities on your computer. Go to KEENELAND.COM, then click on SALE…and select LIVE for the actual viewing of all of the action as it is taking place. This sale lasts for approximately two weeks. All sessions after the first two start in the morning at about 10 Eastern Time.
The catalogs and pedigree pages are on the web-site for you to review as well. It is really quite fascinating to see this side of our industry.
By the way, BLUSH–BLUSH, my photo is on the cover of BOOK ONE. My pal, ZAZU, has her photo on the cover of BOOK TWO. We are both ‘graduates’ of the September Keeneland Yearling Sales.
MY TEAM is coming to Kentucky for the sale…and most importantly they told ME…to SPEND TIME AND VISIT WITH ME! I can’t wait!
With Love,
Hugs to All~

@Diane S – Thanks for the tips. I never thought about using acid free paper, but that’s a great idea. That’s a good idea about the TB Hall of Fame, too. I would like to know what they’re worth.
@Judy Berube – Thank you for the links to Ridan and Greyhound. It’s good to know more about them. They both have interesting histories. Hugs, Debbie

@Abigail from Montreal, see I’m not the only one……many would love it and be willing to pay if necessary. I went back and read your post and I apologize for not sending my regrets on the loss of your mother in law. It’s a sad job you have ahead of you. I send hugs.
@TO ALL sad weekend this is for all Americans to remember especially those that lost loved ones. God Bless America

@mj and others: Was there a contest to name Zenyatta’s foal? I know a lot of us have had fun (and I hope continue to do so) making our suggestions, but I don’t recall any official contest announced at this site or elsewhere. I hope I didn’t miss an opportunity.

Dear Zenny,

Bless you Z and your TEAM for bringing people together. I read your posts every day and see all types of people from different walks of life interacting and forming new friendships all because they love YOU and horses and horse racing. They would have never found each other without YOU and your TEAM. You have accomplished so much in your career, but I believe one of your greatest accomplishments will be as the “voice” of horses everywhere and speaking for them, and helping people get to know them and in some way helpng to improve conditions for all. I wish you long life dear Queen and look forward to your future posts. Thank you Dottie for sharing Z’s “thoughts” with us. Much Love.

Catching up on the posts. @Debbie G-Ridan was a very good horse, ran third in the 62 Derby for which he was the favorite. As I recall, he won more than $400,00 at a time when that amount meant something. Decidedly, a California horse, won the Derby that year. Greyhound is considered by many to be the top trotter of all time. The Dancer’s Image and Forward Pass prints are interesting in the way they are labeled. Dancer’s Image actually won the race but was disqualified later because traces of bute were found in his system. Forward Pass, the second horse, was then declared to be the winner. @Susan in TN-Every day is redneck day. It’s just that January 27 seems so logical, kinda like Christmas. @Barb France-Thank you. @Rosemary McCauley-With your quick wit, we are proud to declare you as a charter member of the Redneck Club. @Kari Bussell-You humble me. @Barbara Wood-I was full of it yesterday. That is why I am looking forward to January 27. @Denise in AZ-Does moonshine count? Consider yourself a member. @Diana S-Since you make the tags, this is a redneck request. You are in. @Karen Gogue-You are already a charter member. No need to butter me up. @Judy Berube-Lots of decisions to be made in that case. @signofthetimes-You are a charter member. The camps sound like great places. You rivalry was a good one, for me there is Affirmed versus Alydar. @Kari Bussell-Strangers aint come down from Rocky Top, reckon they never will. @All-You might be a redneck if your master bathroom has the words “porta” and “potty” written on the side. You might be a redneck if your horse wears shoes, but you don’t.

@Especially Horses, the Thoroughbred Times ran a “Name Zenyatta’s Foal” contest, but it was just for fun. The winner was “Driven To Tears” from a Police song. It was during her first pregnancy–the one she lost around 28 days.

@Doreen, good list. I especially like #61. In addition to her own credentials, the dam Flanders has 2 black-type winners and a black-type placed, and her daughters are producers also. If you like grass runners, there’s #39, filly, Smart Strike/Belva. The filly is a full sister to champion English Channel. Smart Strike is a versatile guy. My possible bargain of the sale is #3000, a filly by Eurosilver out of G1 winner Classy Mirage. She’s a half sister to Dublin. A couple of others in later books that are of interest: #913 (Distorted Humor/Justenuffheart) is a half sister to Ch. Dreaming of Anna and Lewis Michael and full to Justenuffhumor. The dam is 1/2 to Kitten’s Joy. I’m surprised this one isn’t in book 1. Hip #1124 (Giant’s Causeway/Preach) is half-brother to Pulpit. (I have a list of horses in the first and second sessions that I’ll be looking for. I have no life.)

Z’sters & Dumplings—–It has been awhile since I have posted, the reason being, I have been extremely depressed, as the city of Lexington had a terrible tragedy recently. One of our best & most loved Doctors was shot & killed in her car, as she was leaving her office. She was my dermatologist& a most wonderful person. They have arrested a transcient in Dayton, Ohio & charged him with the murder.
It is hard to understand why these things happen to good people. I would appreciate prayers for her family, who are devastated.
Z–I hope you enjoy your time with your family and the cool weather we are having.
Love to you & little Z xoxoxo

@Lil from KY–I was thinking about you yesterday and wondering where you were. What an awful thing to have happen in a city that I love. Our love and prayers to you and sympathy and prayers for the dr.’s family.
@Brooke–I agree with you. I also think Z’s loss was really a win.
@Terry Crow–our horse doesn’t have shoes, so I guess that leaves me out…..

@Brooke, I always enjoy reading your posts Miss Brooke. I hope you and Dusty had a wonderful summer. I’m going to guess that YOU look BEAUTIFUL too, with the Zenyatta ribbons in your hair. Wishing you a happy and successful new year at school. Give Dusty an extra ear scratch from me.

What a beautiful picture! Statuesque beauty! I was just reflecting on the 10th anniv of 9/11. Such loss. But Z gives us such hope, and something lovely to think about and enjoy. Has anyone read WAR HORSE? The author is Michael Morpurgo. It is published by Scholastic, so it is a young readers book. I read it in a few hours. I think Speilberg is going to make a movie. A story of a young man’s devotion to his horse. Brooke, you should give it a try!
Max
Z fans might enjoy seeing Masked Marvel, son of Montjeu, win today the St. Leger, the last classic race of the English Triple Crown. Montjeu’s own grandsire is Northern Dancer who was also sire of the last horse to be the English Triple Crown winner in 1973, the great Nijinsky.
