Happy Friday Dear Friends,
It truly has been an eventful week. The 2 primary summer race meets completed their sessions…and now both Belmont Park and Fairplex open their individual meets. Good Luck to All!
Fairplex is a lovely ‘fair’ meet which runs on a ‘bullring’ race course. This means that the oval is a 5/8ths mile track. They do not have a grass course. All races are run on the main track. Belmont Park is beginning their fall meet and they will offer several major stakes and prep races for the Breeders’ Cup. When the Santa Anita Autumn Meet begins on September 30th…they will have the same quality for their stakes program. The fall racing action is really heating up!
Also, on Sunday, the KEENELAND SEPTEMBER YEARLING SALE begins. The sale will open with 2 evening sessions…which begin at 7 p.m. Eastern Time. These 2 sessions are offering some very fashionably bred yearlings. They are listed in BOOK ONE of the sales catalogs.
When a sale is going to take place, the sales company, Keeneland in this case, prepares a ‘SALES CATALOG’. The catalog provides you with all of the pertinent information relating to the sale and the conditions for the sale. It then lists the horses by HIP NUMBER starting with Hip #1. This way when you are reviewing the catalog, you use this number to find all of the information on a particular horse, the date it is being offered during the sale, and all of it’s detailed pedigree information.
HIP # 147 is of special interest to ME! The colt is a very close relative of mine. He is by STREET CRY (IRE)…my sire…and out of BALANCE. She is my 1/2 sister by Thunder Gulch. What makes us 1/2 sisters is that we have the same MOTHER…VERTIGINEUX.
This colt sells on Monday evening. The bidding on him will be very exciting to watch. You may also follow the activities on your computer. Go to KEENELAND.COM, then click on SALE…and select LIVE for the actual viewing of all of the action as it is taking place. This sale lasts for approximately two weeks. All sessions after the first two start in the morning at about 10 Eastern Time.
The catalogs and pedigree pages are on the web-site for you to review as well. It is really quite fascinating to see this side of our industry.
By the way, BLUSH–BLUSH, my photo is on the cover of BOOK ONE. My pal, ZAZU, has her photo on the cover of BOOK TWO. We are both ‘graduates’ of the September Keeneland Yearling Sales.
MY TEAM is coming to Kentucky for the sale…and most importantly they told ME…to SPEND TIME AND VISIT WITH ME! I can’t wait!
With Love,
Hugs to All~

I’m so glad you’re going to see your team, Zenny. How exciting for you (and them). I love you, pretty girl! :-)
@Terry Crow – Another great joke. January 27 is national redneck day, huh? I’ll have to mark that on my calendar.
To all dumplings – I had something wonderful happen today and I knew you all would appreciate it. My father worked for a printing company and I remember when I was a little girl he would bring home all these wildlife prints. They were very nice, but he died in 1974 when I was only 11 and I never knew what became of any of them. Well, today I went to my mom’s house and she had a surprise for me. My stepdad cleaned out the garage and found seven horse prints my dad had brought home that I didn’t even know existed. There were two Secretariat prints, one Majestic Prince, one Kelso, one Ridan and one of a trotter named Greyhound. There was also one with pictures of both Dancers Image and Forward Pass and it said ‘1968 Kentucky Derby winner’ under both their names. They’re all in pretty good shape considering how old they are. I don’t know where I’ll put them all, but I’m going to attempt to get them all framed. I was wondering – I really don’t know anything about Ridan or Greyhound. Do any of you out there have any info about them you could share?

@Wow, Zenny! I have that winning PowerBall here somewhere, one of these pockets, somewhere – – – . I’d bid on your little 1/2 (3/4) brother in a heart beat! Then all my Z Dumplings friends and I would start our farm. And of course, YOUR JOHN would train him!
Uh, what is that awful noise? Rats! My alarm clock again. It was a great dream, Zenny!

Good Evening Zenny,
So glad you will have a nice visit with your team! The sale sounds exciting and you and Zazu on the covers of the catalog is pretty neat.
@LauraJ Thanks for the info on Old Friends, I didn’t know they had a B&B.
@ Dawn Conrad Thanks also for the info on The Rose Hill Inn in Versailles. We’ll check them both out. Sorry it has taken me so long to say thank you to both of you for the info!

@Debbie G: What an Antiques Roadshow moment! Call your local historical society and ask for a reference to a place that does “conservation” framing, using acid-free papers and other conservation framing materials. Then perhaps call the TB Racing Hall of Fame Museum to see if they can help you with valuation. If they are valuable – you’ll know what to insure them for. What a great gift!

@Trina: Credit where due – Barbara “Skipper” Grimaldi did all the heavy lifting on the website and was up late nights plenty wrestling with it and the web design company. All I really did was provide some (im)moral support. Skipper ROCKS!

For “Z” Friends who would like to share in an Evening Prayer together:
…………………………………
O Father, whose creating hand
Brings harvest from the fruitful land,
Your providence we gladly own,
And bring our hymns before your throne
To praise you for the living bread
on which our lives are daily fed.
Where want and famine still abound
Let your relieving love be found,
And in your name may we supply
Your hungry children when they cry.
O Spirit, your revealing light
Has led our questing souls aright;
Source of our science, you have taught
The marvels human minds have wrought,
So that the barren deserts yield
The bounty by your love revealed.

I’m very excited about the upcoming sale. All eyes will no doubt be on the Balance/Street Cry colt. However, there are quite a few other interesting yearlings. Hip #4 colt, Distorted Humor/Rockside, is a half to Rule. The dam, Rockside, is a half sister to Funny Cide, and the colt is sired by Funny Cide’s sire, so a very close relative of the Derby winner. Hip #15, colt by Unbridled’s Song out of Sweet Life, is half brother to Z’s friend Life Is Sweet and Sweet Catomine. Hip #27 is a colt by superb Euro stallion Galileo out of Honor Grades, winer of the BC Distaff. There’s a half to Smarty Jones (#74), a half to Medaglia D’Oro (#153), half to Mine That Bird (#194), and a full brother to Quality Road (#183). Champion Fleet Indian, daughter of Indian Charlie, has a filly by Distorted Humor (#62). In later books, there’s #400, a filly by Pulpit out of Tap Your Heels. She is a full sister to Tapit. Of special interest to the Dumplings, #735 (Rock Hard Ten/Dowry) is a full sister to Nereid.

I found this nice article about A.P. Indy and his influence on his descendants that ran at the Spa this summer. It makes me wonder what his influence will be on Bernie’s and Zenny’s foal.

Zenny, how you love those spa treatments, those ears are forward and perky but why wouldn’t they be with two handsome men to look after your beauty treatments. Your figure is looking very regal, I’m sure that your family will be really happy to see how well you are looking and so proud of you making the cover of Book 1. Thanks to you and Dottie I’ll be watching the Keeneland sale and looking out for your relative, also for any of Bernie’s babies. Have a fun time with all your visitors Zenny and please be sure to give Dottie lots of hugs and kisses for all of your Dumplings, without her we would be lost.
