Happy Friday Dear Friends,
It truly has been an eventful week. The 2 primary summer race meets completed their sessions…and now both Belmont Park and Fairplex open their individual meets. Good Luck to All!
Fairplex is a lovely ‘fair’ meet which runs on a ‘bullring’ race course. This means that the oval is a 5/8ths mile track. They do not have a grass course. All races are run on the main track. Belmont Park is beginning their fall meet and they will offer several major stakes and prep races for the Breeders’ Cup. When the Santa Anita Autumn Meet begins on September 30th…they will have the same quality for their stakes program. The fall racing action is really heating up!
Also, on Sunday, the KEENELAND SEPTEMBER YEARLING SALE begins. The sale will open with 2 evening sessions…which begin at 7 p.m. Eastern Time. These 2 sessions are offering some very fashionably bred yearlings. They are listed in BOOK ONE of the sales catalogs.
When a sale is going to take place, the sales company, Keeneland in this case, prepares a ‘SALES CATALOG’. The catalog provides you with all of the pertinent information relating to the sale and the conditions for the sale. It then lists the horses by HIP NUMBER starting with Hip #1. This way when you are reviewing the catalog, you use this number to find all of the information on a particular horse, the date it is being offered during the sale, and all of it’s detailed pedigree information.
HIP # 147 is of special interest to ME! The colt is a very close relative of mine. He is by STREET CRY (IRE)…my sire…and out of BALANCE. She is my 1/2 sister by Thunder Gulch. What makes us 1/2 sisters is that we have the same MOTHER…VERTIGINEUX.
This colt sells on Monday evening. The bidding on him will be very exciting to watch. You may also follow the activities on your computer. Go to KEENELAND.COM, then click on SALE…and select LIVE for the actual viewing of all of the action as it is taking place. This sale lasts for approximately two weeks. All sessions after the first two start in the morning at about 10 Eastern Time.
The catalogs and pedigree pages are on the web-site for you to review as well. It is really quite fascinating to see this side of our industry.
By the way, BLUSH–BLUSH, my photo is on the cover of BOOK ONE. My pal, ZAZU, has her photo on the cover of BOOK TWO. We are both ‘graduates’ of the September Keeneland Yearling Sales.
MY TEAM is coming to Kentucky for the sale…and most importantly they told ME…to SPEND TIME AND VISIT WITH ME! I can’t wait!
With Love,
Hugs to All~

OMG! It was Kari Bussell who foisted Princess Beatrice’s fascinator on Will and Kate’s wedding. It still haunts my dreams – and some of my waking hours. Kari, did you get it at Keeneland or Fasig-Tipton, or was it a claiming race pick up?

Hip 87 showed some good dance potential so he might be considered a good date for Zenny.

#94 Unbridled’s Song/My White Corvette. Half-sister to champion Stardom Bound!

Hahaaha! Poor Kari! She could wear sackcloth, and still look regal.

#94 what a sweetheart! Gray horses are God’s poems.
Especially Horses
#92 and #93, two in a row with a registered name. If you are going to sell why bother? If I pay six-figures for a horse, I am going to want to name him myself.
LauraJ
#95 is a big girl!
Anne from Paramount, CA
@All, esp. Trina & Kari: I, too was VERY touched by the Clydesdales tribute. I just whispered “WOW” to myself. @Linda in NJ: I also say thanks for sharing your experiences from that horrific day and after.
Our dear Queen Z, we all will be so glad to learn/see details of your family visit!!
Kari Bussell
#94- I agree!
Cynthia H.
I wonder if “our team” has purchased anything? Do they make the buyers’ names public?
LauraJ
@Cynthia H., http://apps.keeneland.com/data/salesumm.asp?saleid=201202&mostRecentSession=Y
Doesn’t look like they’ve bought anything so far, unless they bid on the RNAs or used an agent (which they don’t normally).
Especially Horses
@Cynthia H. I’ve been wondering the same thing. Also, when they scan the audience I’ve been looking hard to see if I recognize anyone.
Cynthia H.
@Laura J: Thank you for the link!
@Especially Horses: I know. I keep looking for Dottie, because her striking hair is so easy to spot. I wonder if they have luxury viewing boxes, like they do at the ballpark’s? I guess it wold make bidding an impossibility, unless the agent was on the floor.
Kari Bussell
@Laura J- Thank you- I was also wondering about that.

TRINA–including that lovely poem by that young boy was a perfect touch for today. So was DJ’s choice of that Psalm…perfect. I can’t seem to get excited about the sales of yearlings when so many other horses are hurting so and on this day which is seared into our minds.

@Linda in NJ. Thank you for sharing your story. We will never forget!
LauraJ
#106–Only $190K. Another RNA for sure. Maybe I’ll put a bid in on him (not).
LauraJ
Bedtime! More fun tomorrow. Better get your fascinators cleaned.
Cynthia H.
Thank you, everyone, for your companionship and for sharing the joy of your company tonight. The beauty of these young horses is immense, and lifts my heart. Life is about living. We do all we can to make the world a better place, as Dottie has mentioned so often on this site, and we keep on.
@Kari: 12th. I leave now for my California dinner of eggplant and brown rice.
Especially Horses
@Cynthia H. I was looking for “the hair” too. lol. One day down. On the west coast it’s just a little before 8:00 pm. I’ve usually already gotten myself ready for tomorrow’s workday. Time to go. Sweet yearling dreams everyone; I hope we saw a KD winner go through the ring tonight.
Cynthia H.
Peace and love to you all.
Kari Bussell
Ditto everything Cynthia said!
12th!

Precious Z– Hope you will share news of your team’s visit tomorrow. Sleep well, dear girl. Love you always.

Hi, Zenyatta. Just returned from Lexington, KY myself. Drove by your home and waved. Visited Darley, Winstar, 3 Chimneys, Claiborne, Ashford Stud, Adena Springs and Old Friends. Was happily surprised that “the gang” at Old Friends was so lively. Charlie Brown, the tour leader, was fantastic and knows all about the horses. Did you know that little Silver Charm has a crush on you, Zenny? He has pictures of you in his stall. How cute!! The farm tours were very educational as they walk you through the breeding shed process, etc. Richard Berry at Coolmore America (Ashford Stud), our tour leader, was actually the fellow in charge of the breeding shed, so these tours are very professional. At Darley, I stood where you and Bernardini had your two dates. The Thoroughbred Training Center is a must!! Mr. Cameron, also an ESPN reporter, is a walking equine encyclopedia. Also, did not know that Henry Clay owned Ashland Stud and had at least 10 Kentucky Derby winners. C-Span was there when we visited Ashland, the Clay estate. Really enjoyed the Show of Champions at the Kentucky Horse Park as it included Funny Cide, Cigar and Da Hoss. The help at the Keeneland Kitchen are very cordial and told us about the time Glen Close visited. Lexington and its surrounding areas are simply beautiful. What a great place to visit.

@Especially Horses. At the sales a lot of the buyers actually stand behind the sales ring.In the back as they walk the horses around. Bids come in over the phones at points. I know they do that in Florida. There is a big like Video of the actual sales going on that they can see in the back. I have seen that. there’s bidding coming in from everywhere. A man sitting close to me at the OBS sale lost a bid for his client (he was on the phone ) sitting close to me and the auctioneer called the horse sold and then the man quipped and said he wasn’t finished bidding and the auctionner said he was sold. He thought he was finished.

I believe Sheik Mohammed sometimes stands also in the back of the sales ring
