Good Morning,
Santa Anita is such a gorgeous facility. As you can see, the mountains in the background totally add to the overall environment. When you go to Santa Anita Park in the morning for workouts, they have the ‘CLOCKERS CORNER’ experience available to you at no charge. Just park your car, walk into the grandstand area, and enjoy yourself.
Rosie, who operates the CLOCKERS CORNER CAFE, is a terrific person who will go out of her way to help all of the fans. If you are in the area, going to workouts at Santa Anita is truly a wonderful way to spend your morning.
Additionally, on race day mornings, Clockers Corner is the location where they televise FIRST CALL on HRTV from 8 to 9 Pacific Time. So, you’ll also get to see this program being televised live while you are there.
I must say, though, just looking at those beautiful mountains glistening in the morning sun and watching the horses as they train…is worth the trip!
It is now the time of year in the racing calendar where the horses are ‘moving’ back to their individual home bases from the summer seasons at Del Mar and Saratoga. The vans are arriving at all of the different barns and the horses are carefully loaded on them and sent ‘home’. The tack, the staff, the barn offices…all must be shipped as well. It is quite a job…but it is amazing how ‘in stride’ people take all of this. It is part of racing…and everyone pitches in to make the move go smoothly and to be sure the horses are healthy and happy while all of this is happening.
With my Barn 55 friends, they are en route to Hollywood Park.
The last few days horses have been shipping back to Barn 55 from Del Mar. Several more will leave tomorrow. My John likes to ship a load of 6-8 at a time so they can settle in and get acclimated to their ‘new’ environment before another group of horses arrive. Some of the horses who trained at Santa Anita for the summer will also be transitioned to Hollywood Park. The decision on which location, Santa Anita or Hollywood Park, a horse is housed is based upon their personal needs, personalities, and which environment is better for them overall…to meet their training needs. It is something that is thought out very carefully and in great detail. The horse always comes first.
Throughout my entire racing career, I stayed at BARN 55 at Hollywood Park…except when I would be shipped to Santa Anita (or other race tracks) for a race. I absolutely loved the open spaces there. I had the 2 big grass areas for grazing and I loved my stall..#85. After almost 5 years in that environment, it truly was HOME TO ME!
Have a terrific day!
With Love,
Hugs to all~ (Del Mar…have a great closing day!)

Thanks for sharing about Santa Anita, Zenny. I’d love to go there sometime, but I don’t know if I’ll ever make it. It sure looks and sounds beautiful. I love you, sweet girl! :-)
@JAG – I enjoyed your post. How amazing that you got to be at the 2009 BC. Wow, I would give anything to have been there. I still have that race on my DVR and watch it every now and then. I love John Henry, too. I saw him twice at the KY Horse Park. They warned everyone not to stick their hands in his stall because he was quite cranky and he might bite, but I managed to get a quick rub down his nose.

Zenny, Santa Anita looks so pretty that I don’t know whether I like palm trees or Blue Grass best. Now that you are in the Blue Grass, living a leisurely life and waiting to be a Mommy, you must miss your family and many friends in sunny California. Some of them will be coming to see you soon so we can all look forward to seeing some of Sarah’s fantastic photos, and maybe some of YOUR JOHN’S pictures of YOU with an up to date report from your OB/GYN on the growing little one. Perhaps, if you whisper in Dottie’s ear, she will ask John to take a photo of you for us so that we can see the growing bump.
@ Terry C – I love your jokes and the
red neck one liners, thank you.
@ Judy B – Thanks for the “ouch” Some of the staff at Vic’s school decided today that the damage must be the result of one or two too many cocktails – nothing at all to do with a dog.

Dearest Zenyy-I must tell you how much I loved the picture of you and Kitty yesterday! The look on your sweet face was just priceless!! Your loving nature just shone through . I have 4 cats: Ellie,a dark tortise-shell,rescued from an abusive home:Katie, named for Katie Couric,an apricot Himalayan:Gus,a gray tabby with white feet and chest, who is suffering from cancer: and the Queen of our house,Princess Star Ralphine Fredricka Thomasina Sarah-Louise,who is mostly called Star or Kitten,a three-legged gray tabby who is the boss of everything!! I love them all but Star IS the STAR!!The Thomasina in her name is for a kitty I had years ago who looked just like your Kitty!!
The photo of the San Gabriel mountains is great–some readers may remember my mentioning that I graduated from Monrovia High School, which is just across the street from the border of Arcadia!! When I was there(graduated in ’56—eeek!)if you went out the end door of the Social Science bldg. and crossed the street, you were in Arcadia! Our high school HAD been called Monrovia-Arcadia_duarte High, but the year before I got there,Arcadia opened their own school. After I graduated,Duarte got their own too.
Next year, when I come to the Breeder’s Cup,I can go back to my school again. I took my daughter there to a game when I went back to my 50th Reunion 5 years ago.
Our campus looks more like a college than a high school. You can see our “Big M” on the side of the mountain above the school.
@Susan in TN-THanks for the update on River Edge–poor Chopper, crying for his friend–how heartbreaking. Hope he makes friends with Chester and the others!!
Night is falling where you are, sweet Zenny. Have sweet dreams tonight and have a happy day tomorrow with your friends–and the sun on your back and a soft breeze to ruffle your mane—-LOVE YOU!!!
Paul
Zenyatta, alot of good memories must be coming back to you. The mountains of Santa Anita, you and the other horses being transported back to their home tracks as opposed to their summer tracks, your old barn 55 buddies, and many others. You mention being at Hollywood Park as your home and that horses going from Del Mar go either to Santa Anita or Hollywood Park depending on their personality, needs, and other things. I seem to learn something new on every diary entry on this site. It is very educational. They don’t teach this stuff in school. The horses have plenty of time to adjust to change this way so they can run in their races.

Yes, Santa Anita is a beautiful place. I think Del Mar is beautiful too and I enjoy the racing at Hollywood Park.

what gorgeous views you enjoyed in your racing days, and even now Kentucky horse country is just idyllic. You are one lucky horse :) :) :)

Funny we both had greyhounds. They are such lovely pets and so appreciative of being given the opportunity to be pets. Track life for them is not the best. Thanks for all the great links.

It was so funny when I read that paragraph about Slew, it was so applicable for Zenny. Did not realize Slew was so competative and got so angry during the Derby trying to get throught all those horses. I guess that is what it takes to win the TC. Thanks for sharing Karen Taylor’s comment, very touching.
