Happy Friday!
It is always so hard for ME to believe how quickly time is literally flying by. It is already September 2nd….and the closing weekend of racing at both Del Mar and Saratoga. Labor Day is upon us…and students all over the country are returning to school.
I hope all of you enjoy your weekend and all of the great racing that is scheduled. The 2 year olds are starting to step up to stakes activity on both coasts….and then Havre de Grace is going to take on the males in The Woodward Stakes–G1. Additionally at Del Mar, the Del Mar Derby G-2 will be showcased. All the best to all of the participants and their connections.
Yesterday, a few dear friends of mine sent Dottie a link regarding an article in the September, 2011, issue of THE AMERICAN TURF MAGAZINE. The piece is written by Mark Shrager. In it, he is listing (in his opinion) the TOP 10 AMERICAN RACE HORSES EVER!
Guess who is there at #6? ME!!
Now this is very special…and I so appreciate Mark’s ranking. The list of horses and how he rated the TOP 10 are as follows:
1) DR. FAGER
2) KELSO
3) SECRETARIAT
4) SEATTLE SLEW
5) CITATION
6) ZENYATTA…….THAT’S ME! (BLUSH, BLUSH)
7) AFFIRMED
8) MAN O’ WAR
9) SPECTACULAR BID
10) JOHN HENRY
Click here for the article.
This is a list of some amazing thoroughbreds with massive racing accomplishments. I am so PROUD to be included with this elite company. Dottie was commenting to John last night that I AM THE ONLY FEMALE on the list. Also, I am the only horse to be included who ran in the last few decades. John Henry won his HOTY titles in 1981 and 1984. All of the other horses represent decades of racing before that time. This is truly significant and as I mentioned earlier, I am extremely PROUD and HONORED to be in such company.
I hope you enjoy the article, your weekend, and some great RACING! Cheers to great handicapping!
With Love,
Hugs to All~ (Thank you Camille and Jim for sharing this article with US!)

Good evening Zenyatta,
it’s raining, it’s raining
the old man is complaining…
Well, as you guessed it’s raining here, nice temperature change coming, too. Hope you and your barn buddies are enjoying cool weather pretty soon, too. Nothg like a nice crisp sting in the air.
Pillow chuckle for tonight:

@Zenyen,
@Eveline
Thank you both very much. Read the article.

@Cynthia H., yes it is such a tragic loss of Saint Liam. It is so Sad. I know this world is not perfect and never will be, but just wish the bad things wouldn’t happen.

On TVG they showed Carl Wood working again at the starting gate—-you’ll remember his knee was hurt in a starting gate accident some weeks ago. Brinson said Carl’s going to have his knee checked out again after the Del Mar meet.

Zenyatta you are juat AMAZING and I am so very proud of you. You so deserve to be there with the other Greats. What an honor because each one of those horses were also unbelieveable. I cried because I am always so moved by YOU. I love you and so do the children. Sweet dreams. sending you BIG HUGS AND KISSES, Shari XXXOOO
@ Hi to my Z Family XXOO :)

@Signofthetimes, Secretariat did sire some good male racehorses. He sired Risen Star, who won the Preakness and the Belmont and became 3-year-old Champion, Travers winner General Assembly, Melbourne Cup winner Kingston Rule, and Pacific Classic winner Tinner’s Way. It’s just that none of these boys set the world on fire as a sire. The funny thing is, some of his sons looked a great deal like him. Tinner’s Way favors his daddy, and General Assembly looked even more like him.

@Judy Berube, I think HdG made herself the favorite for Horse of the Year with today’s win. Blind Luck, IMO, is a close second. None of the boys has dominated his division the way these girls have.

Wow Zenny, some great racing today. Haven’t watched my recordings yet but cheated and looked at Bloodhorse.com.
Congrats to Havre de Grace, you go girl!
Also congrats to Jackson Bend, Quiet Giant, She Digs Me, Ask The Moon and So You Think. Don’t want to forget anyone, so congrats to all winners and hope everyone came home safe. And can’t forget Jerry Hollendorfer on his 6,000th win.
Spent all day at the horse rescue, didn’t mean to just ended up that way. Not that I’m complaining :) It was wonderful. Oh and my daughter was with me and was a trouper.
@Susan in TN–didn’t see your last post to me before I posted last night. So glad your son is coming around :) Really glad my daughter did but yes, as you said “Kids- whadda ya gonna do?!”
Wow Zenny, I am beat after loving and working with the horses all day. Hope you had a relaxing and pampered day. Here’s some loving to you–big air-hug and air-kisses!
Have a great Sunday and lotsa love to all.

Dear Peggy (N):
Yes, Dear Heart, thanks for asking. As Russ and I are old codgers, we can’t do yard work anymore.
But we have a really nice young man that mows our lawn and he’s been here over yesterday and today and cleaned up the yard very nicely. Hope this Gulf area storm is not too severe. Wishing everyone safe going. Hugs, J.B.

Dear Eveline:
Thank you for the link on St. Liam. So sad. Hugs, J.B.

@Trina
Thanks for update on Dreamcaster one of Bernie’s
Fillies. Maybe they are will mature late too.
@Judy B and Z sters
So sad about St. Liam only one season at stud.
HDG is his most successful so far. Shows just how
Delicate horse are and how vulnerable.

@Laura J
Thanks for info on Secretariat’s successful sons.
Interesting how none hung the moon as sites. Really
Love genetics; it really is a gamble. Zenny’s breeding
Was a gamble as Street Cry was not well known in US and
Not a real looker, but a very talented successful race horse.
Looks are great, but talent seems to be better,

Hurricane Lee not a nice guy, in near New Orleans, Sabine Pass, Tx
Heading east to Fla. Panhandle. Lots of rain. There is a very
Big event in New Orleans this weekend that will be
Affected.

I love you Z and am so proud of you. The gentleman’s list has Man Of War way too low and Dr Fager way too high. You deserve to be on the list. This is the way I see it. Man of War, Secretariate, Seattle Slew, Citation, Zenyatta, Affirmed, War Admiral, Seabiscuit, John Henry and Personal Ensign. Be well big girl. Hugs and Kisses and a little peck for the foal.
judy berube
Dear Signofthetimes:
Horses legs really are so delicate. Makes Z even more of a miracle horse. All those terrific races; especially the last one with that surface and all the dirt flying in her eyes and face.She just kept on closing. So lucky that she stayed sound. Hugs, J.B.

@sign: Did you know that Quiet Giant won the Molly Pitcher today? She’s by Giant’s Causeway out of a Quiet American mare — and I remember that Quiet American is a favourite of yours. She won by 4 lengths and beat, among others, Peyton d’Oro.
Sweet dreams Zenny & stay safe Zen-sters to the East and the West!

@Baby Results —————————————— 09-03-11
.
SARATOGA –
Race 2 – My key horse “Da Vinci” was never in it and finished 10th. I think that’s the worse finished or all the Pletcher horses at the Spa this year and of course I keyed him. The time was below average. The under horses came in 5th, 7th, & 9th. -$6.00
.
Race 7 – The key horse “Hierro” ran pretty bland and finished 5th but no one in this race was going to catch the winner. “Alpha”, the 1st half of the entry won it in a good time, the 2nd half of the entry finished last. The others came in 2nd & 3rd. -$6.00
.
Race 12 – “Coalition” was never in it and finished last. The time was a little below average. -$10.00
.
DEL MAR –
Race 1 – “Princess Ash” was scratched so I passed this race. Our Key
horse “Customer Base” won and the two under horses that were left after the scratch came in 2nd & 3rd. The $1 tri paid $64.80 but we didn’t have it because I passed. If I would have boxed the 3 horses that were left after the scratch I would have won. The time was pretty good in this race. VOID BET
.
Race 3 – My key horse “Contested” came in 2nd. That’s not too bad for Bob. I guess he can go home for dinner tonight but it probably be frozen. LOL. The time was pretty good in this one. The under numbers finished 4th, 5th, 6th. -$6.00
.
Race 5 – We finished 1, 2 ,3, 4 in this one. Only problem is our key horse finished 3rd. The time was average. Granny cashed a $5.60 ticket. -$6.00
.
Race 8 – The key horse “Dreamcaster” was
involved till half way down the stretch then faded to 7th. The under numbers came in 1, 2, 3 again and “Self Preservation” placed at 24-1. Again we didn’t win anything. The time was pretty good but not anywhere near “SisterMoon” – $6.00
.
-$40.00 Bet today +$85.20 Starting Out Sunday.
.
@ Granny bet all the key horses and the one win horse to show. She cashed 3 out of 7 and lost $2.20.

Congratulations, HDG! Way to go. I am so thrilled for Larry Jones as well. What a girl he has.
@Quarterhossgal–so sorry about your mare. Praying for her. Please keep us updated.
@Susan in TN–thanks for the info. on Bluebonnet. I have them on a list of rescues I printed out, so I can easily go to their website. Did I miss something about your son? It was only 101 here today, but lows next week may be in the 50’s . Yippee! Not a drop of rain, though. Just wildfires. Thanks for asking.
Good night, Sweet Z. we are all so thankful you avoided any injuries and retired healthy. Love you always.
@East Coast Dumplings–heads up! Looks like another hurricane headed your way. What next?? Stay safe.
Marshall (girl's name)
Goodnight beautiful Zenny! Hope you had a lovely Saturday! Sleep well and sweet dreams!
YAY!!! Go Havre de Grace! Congratulations to HDG, Larry Jones, and all their connections! Well done!

Congratulations beautiful Queen Z! This year you have been listed among the top athletes, whether horse or human. Your honors are so well deserved. Your achievements on the track and beyond, especially you charity work and the positive attention you’ve drawn to horses and their welfare, are worthy of any and all accolades that come your way. We simply can’t honor you enough, but our love for you is boundless.
@Terry Crow: Thanks for your expression of concern re: Tropical Storm Lee. I think I will weather it OK and am hopeful that everyone does. Also, I’m totally impressed with your knowledge of New Testament resurrection history and its relationship to weather and the changing of the seasons. That was priceless.
@Quarterhossgal: We are all pulling for your mare to make it through. Keep us posted.
@EK: (1) Having a depth of knowledge about a particular subject, such as horse health, is admirable; (2) being willing to share it with others is usually considered generous; (3) feeling compelled to express it with condescension and insult is unseemly and unnecessary. Why don’t you stick with (1) and (2) and ditch (3). I for one would appreciate the wisdom of your insights so much more. Thanks.
