Happy Friday!
It is always so hard for ME to believe how quickly time is literally flying by. It is already September 2nd….and the closing weekend of racing at both Del Mar and Saratoga. Labor Day is upon us…and students all over the country are returning to school.
I hope all of you enjoy your weekend and all of the great racing that is scheduled. The 2 year olds are starting to step up to stakes activity on both coasts….and then Havre de Grace is going to take on the males in The Woodward Stakes–G1. Additionally at Del Mar, the Del Mar Derby G-2 will be showcased. All the best to all of the participants and their connections.
Yesterday, a few dear friends of mine sent Dottie a link regarding an article in the September, 2011, issue of THE AMERICAN TURF MAGAZINE. The piece is written by Mark Shrager. In it, he is listing (in his opinion) the TOP 10 AMERICAN RACE HORSES EVER!
Guess who is there at #6? ME!!
Now this is very special…and I so appreciate Mark’s ranking. The list of horses and how he rated the TOP 10 are as follows:
1) DR. FAGER
2) KELSO
3) SECRETARIAT
4) SEATTLE SLEW
5) CITATION
6) ZENYATTA…….THAT’S ME! (BLUSH, BLUSH)
7) AFFIRMED
8) MAN O’ WAR
9) SPECTACULAR BID
10) JOHN HENRY
This is a list of some amazing thoroughbreds with massive racing accomplishments. I am so PROUD to be included with this elite company. Dottie was commenting to John last night that I AM THE ONLY FEMALE on the list. Also, I am the only horse to be included who ran in the last few decades. John Henry won his HOTY titles in 1981 and 1984. All of the other horses represent decades of racing before that time. This is truly significant and as I mentioned earlier, I am extremely PROUD and HONORED to be in such company.
I hope you enjoy the article, your weekend, and some great RACING! Cheers to great handicapping!
With Love,
Hugs to All~ (Thank you Camille and Jim for sharing this article with US!)

Dear Terry Crow:
That was a groaner. But I still think you’re Our King of Comedy. Hugs, J.B.

You are absolutely right. The steroid decrease the inflammation and soreness, but make the tissues weak and they can tear.
All dose related, though. They are very dangerous drugs and it always make me nervous when folks want those “steroid” shots for their allergies every month. Sooo many problems including weak bones in people long term. Not sure that would happen in equines as they only get them short term.

Congrats to So You Think, Havre de Grace and Alpha (another of Bernie’s Babies). Hugs, J.B.

Dear Eveline:
You’re so welcome and thank you for the info on the different kinds of steroids. I’m not familiar with them, but I have heard horror stories about them in human use and using them on horses scares me. But as I said, I’m not knowledgeable as you are. Hugs, J.B.

Dear Terry Crow:

Yes, HDG for HOY would be great. She is a very nice looking filly.Very talented, poised and professional. Hope she comes out of the race OK. Love to see Stay Thirsty as 3 year old champ. It is so frustrating how all of the owners want that quick money with a champion 2 year old. A 2 year old is a baby and they have so many more good years ahead of them. Actually, a 6 year old horse is even young. They really don’t get a lot of mileage and savey until 10 to 12 years. I guess that is the world of racing????!!!!!

@Judy B
Really love the way RD keep HDG on the outside, not saving ground but sparing all the issues with being in the pack and she
had a smooth trip. Great jockey, I so admire their riding skills.

@ Eveline
There are a number of different steroids; sex steroids (testosterone) and anabolic steroids (dexamethasone;cortisone,
prednisone, etc… ), which is used to treat inflammation. Sex steroids are used to “bulk” up muscle mass, no use in inflammation. Anabolic steroids wreck havoc on the muscle and tissue and bone causing wound healing issue and soft bones.
Sex steroids cause cancer if given unmonitored.

Dear Signofthetimes:
Thanks for the link on St. Liam, HDg’s Dad. He only stood for one season at Lanes End and had to be euthaized due to an accident that resulted in a leg fracture to extensive to treat. Very sad. Don’t know how many of his babies besides HGD are racing. Have to look that up. Hugs, J.B.

Hi Zenny Hope you are having a great day.
@Harve De Grace, I’m speechless, you were just fantastic today. So Proud of you.
@Larry Jones, Congratulations sent your way. Great job
@Rick Porter, thank you for buying such a wonderful horse. Congratulations.
@Susan in TN, yes someone did yell Timber today. I got my 2 trees down. The guys did a real good job.
@Judy B, these storms we’ve all been having the last few years have been real scary. Is your cleanup coming good.
@Dawn C, (Little Sis) had to say hello to you
@Everyone we could have another good Breeders Cup this year couldn’t we?
@Harve De Grace, know your dad Saint Liam is very proud of his girl.
I am asking this question here. Am I remembering correctly, Didn’t Saint Liam Pass away. I remember what a beautiful horse he was, was trying to remember back. Is this correct?
I remember a horse passing away from an accident at Lane’s End, Was this him? Am I remembering correctly or not. I know I could google it but, all this is just coming from the heart here, so I’ll ask here. Blessings Peggy
Zenyen
@Peggy
Yes, Saint Liam fell being lead to his paddock at Lane’s End and was euthanized after only 1 season at stud.

@signofthetimes—Bernardidi daughter Dreamcaster won on August 7 at Del Mar—let’s see what she does today in Race 8. Good luck, Dreamcaster!

Saint Liam a tragic loss. Only one season at stud, and the results are truly remarkable. Chester House yet another sad loss. Immense potential as sires, both of them.
Trina Nagele
Not Dreamcaster’s day–better luck next time.
