Happy Friday!
As you can see, I’m getting my BEAUTY REST and making sure that I am taking great care of myself these days!
Additionally, I want to get plenty of rest so I can be energized and watch all of the terrific weekend of racing on both coasts. I’m going to be spending tons of time with my guys here at LANE’S END handicapping and watching the races. The conversation around the barn is already heating up now on who likes who in which race…and why! It is great FUN!
From Saratoga, running the Travers and the King’s Bishop… to Del Mar carding the Pat O’Brien and the Pacific Classic to name a few of the quality stakes running the next few days, it will be one very sporting weekend.
Uncle Mo…is making his first start back in the King’s Bishop since ‘feeling under the weather’ around Kentucky Derby time. There are so many contentious 3 year old colts running in the Travers….that I will really have to study the FORM here.
Then in Del Mar, they are running The Pacific Classic which is their premiere race of the entire meet. My farm, Lane’s End, has a horse competing in the field…TWIRLING CANDY. So this is very, very exciting!
My friend, BLIND LUCK, and her connections decided to ‘skip’ the Pacific Classic for this year and have her compete on another path: The Lady’s Secret and if all goes well The Breeders’ Cup Ladies Classic. These are both very distinguished and prestigious races….I know them quite well. All the best to her and her future plans.
Enjoy your weekend! Have a terrific time watching all of these high quality races! It is SO MUCH FUN! I can’t wait!
Hey, Matt, Charles, Mike, David and Sarah…who do you like???
With Love,
Hugs to All~

You sure do know the Ladies’ Secret and the Breeder’s Cup Ladies Classic well! It’s neat to see you laying down resting. My horse is a 25 year old retired racehorse and she’s one of those horses that never lays down. Take care Zenyatta!

Dear Signofthetimes:
Yes, got batteries for an old radio, candles, flashlights. Worry about trees falling. We have quite a few very old ones. I left you a reply on your post about “Green Saddle Cloth”. What a wonderful, magnificent horse Z is. She really gave us her all that night at 2010 BC Classic. Thank you so much for your concern for us here on the East Coast. Hugs, J.B.

Amazing video of the dig. This was a significant find bones and horseshoes. Tense moments as they were some distance off from what was thought to be the site, but they got him. Pray for a safe trip.

@Sherry—I agree with Terry that your remarks make good points and more attention should be paid to protesting disrespectful remarks and attitudes towards female jockeys.
@Terry Crow—LOL at your oh-so-clever remark concerning the two very different Bobs! Cute Southern accent joke too, if I as a Yankee am permitted to express that opinion.
@Karen—Cute comment about Sleeping Beauty and Waking Beauty!
@J Smith—High hoof to you on all your work for TROTT. Hope you raise lots of funds for the horses. Have fun at the party, and we look forward to hearing all about it!
Trina Nagele
@lalter—This story is so sad and infuriating at the same time. Hope they catch those thieves and throw the book at them (though I doubt that the book is nearly big enough). RIP therapy horse Calvin.

@Margaret —Thanks for the heads-up about Cloud on PBS’s Need to Know this weekend.

@Kimberly Potter, judy berube, Joanna, Andrea, DJ, Marshall (girl’s name), Trina Nagele, and Susan in TN (your posts on #327) – you’re welcome.
@Dawn Conrad, Deborah Richman (your posts on #327) – I loved the poem the minute I read it.
@ Quarterhossgal (your post on 327) – I found the poem to be befitting as a remembrance to Kensei and to all the horses that preceded him in death.
@Peggy (N), Barbara Wood, Kate Wheeler, Deborah Richman, Ingrid in Ma, Jeanie, Kari Bussell, Signofthetimes, Jan, Sharon in Seattle, Max, Kimberly Potter, Jackie and s(in San Diego) – thank you for your well wishes for those of us who live on the east coast.
To my fellow New Englanders and Z fans on the east coast: take care and stay safe. My thoughts are with each and every one of you. As of 3:30 AM EST, Hurricane Irene is a Category 1 hurricane. Hopefully, she continues to lose her punch and she ends up being just an annoyance and nothing more than that. I know – wishful thinking.
Congratulations to “To Honor and Serve” for his 8 ¼ length victory. I’ve been following him since last year when I first heard his name. I fell in love with the name as well as the horse. It made it extra special to find out that he was one of Bernie’s offspring. To Honor and Serve runs and looks like his sire. I was at Belmont when Bernie won the 2006 Jockey Club Gold Cup. I thought he was the most stunning horse I ever laid my eyes on and I’m glad I took pictures of him that day.
Zenny – a nap does wonders for both the mind and body. Make sure you get all the rest that you can. Once you have your foal, you’ll be one very busy Momma. Enjoy the weekend with your friend Tasty Temptation.
Good luck and safe trips to everyone this weekend.

@Karen Gogue—-Thanks for the updates on Noor. May the journey go well. Please convey our congratulations to Charlotte Farmer.

@Terry Crow & Trina
sad to say, gender prejudice is alive and well in racing and people don’t seem to care. Yes, some horses are very difficult to handle and take a strong determined rider but it’s temperment and lack of good fundamental training that accounts for most of it. People, like Michele imply that female riders aren’t strong finishers and that’s stupid. Watch Emma Jayne Wilson’s third race, on thursday, from Woodbine and you’ll see as strong a finish as any male rider. Are all women that strong? maybe not but not all men are either. As a jockey, you have to be fit but you also have to think and the last time I checked, that applies to both sexes.
Terry, maybe some of those women weren’t good riders but that’s not the point. They were denied the opportunity. They were told women couldn’t handle a race horse. If someone wants to ride and the can do the job, no one has the right to say no based on gender.
Michele didn’t say, she thought Cheryl Carlton wasn’t a good rider or strong finisher, she said women shouldn’t be jockeys, in her opinion. That is a prejudice opinion, and that should not be tolerated by TVG. Picture this – Tvg is congratulating a woman jockey for reaching the 2,000 win milestone, a famous former jockey is in town, on tvg as guest commenator, they’re talking about Pacific Classic week-end coming up and how Twirling Candy will probable be favored at the site where his sire won in 2003, with a women aboard, and Michele Yu says women should not be jockeys! How can you not be outraged at this insult? It’s the same as saying blacks should not be jockeys. It’s prejudice and all the more sickening when it comes from another women. Make her record a public statement of appology, airing often on Tvg – make her attend classes on women’s history and learn something about gender predjuice – or fire her but don’t just let it slide. That’s intolerable.

I rest my case! Do women want to be wrestlers? Some do and some can! Nobody should have the right to say they can’t. Looks like their pretty good at it too. lol

A Birthday Poem for Shari Voltz
August 27, 2011
Fifth-grade teacher Shari Voltz
Energizes every lad and lass
In her homeroom class
As if with lightning bolts.
She features
Splendid equine creatures
From the great Zenyatta
To amazing colts.
She sure plans her lessons with a lotta
Special creativity!
For her students there’s so much in store
In sessions galore
Laced with both old and new racing lore
That classes are never a bore—
And “horses for courses”
Doesn’t just mean
What it did before!
Along with racing thrills,
Shari gives her students skills
That will last and last—
For them, learning’s a blast!
She was even in the newspaper
For making studies a fun-filled caper.
Her students all love her—
They’ll tell you, there’s no teacher above her!
Last year her class sent a card
To dear Zenyatta, their favorite mare,
To show how they care.
’Twas life-sized,
With flowing mane and tail
Done with yarn.
Now it hangs in the barn
In what was Z’s stall
Where it is prized
By one and all.
They also cheered so
For that cute Uncle Mo.
They thought he
For Z
Would be a good mate.
They want him to be
Her next date
‘Cuz for this go-round
He’s too late.
And imagine how they were surprised
When one day they found—
Holey-moley!
Caps had arrived
From owner Mike Repole!
In this new school year
With Uncle Mo on the mend,
You’ll hear Shari’s class cheer
“Go, Mo, Go!”
And she’ll continue to blend
Into her lesson plans
Mo and Bernardini’s son Stay Thirsty,
Of whom she and her students are fans.
.
Shari will celebrate
Today’s special date
With friends and kin.
And as a birthday gift
From Thirsty and Uncle Mo,
When today around the track they spin,
It would give her a lift
If both would win
And not just show—
Go, boys, go!
Go, sweet colts,
For our dear Mrs. Voltz!
