Good Morning All!
John and Dottie were on their way back to the barn yesterday afternoon when these adorable POODLES were driving right next to them with their owner. SOPHIE thought they looked just like her….only MUCH bigger!
John simply had to get this photo. (Needless to say, Dottie was driving!) The 2 dogs in the back sure seemed to be enjoying every moment of the summer breeze while driving around town. I think lots of our 4-legged pals LOVE DEL MAR!
The real point of John and Dottie’s trip from the barn was to go to the market and purchase more dandelion leaves for the horses. Per MY JOHN, they absolutely love them! I do remember that John always tried to have some fun and different things for us to munch on and play with all of the time….often with the primary objective being to change the pace from our normal routine…and KEEP THINGS HEALTHY AND FUN FOR US!
Perhaps you remember meeting my BARN 55 friend, BRONZE BEAUTY. In an earlier diary, I referred to her as “Sleeping Beauty” as she LOVES her naps. Well, John also knows she LOVES dandelion leaves. So much so, she’ll wake up to have them. Please enjoy her photos. She is a DOLL!
It can be pretty terrific to be a lucky DOG or a fortunate HORSE enjoying life in DEL MAR!
With Love,
Hugs to All~(Have some fun today!)

Happy hour special today! Serving an iced Electric Limeade with deep fried Dandelion Blossoms and warm Dandelion Bruschetta topped with sauteed garlic, Parmesan Cheese and Cherry Tomatoes! Hope to see all on “Z’s Green!” Thinking of you too, Kc and hope you and yours are well today!
The Kennedys in San Diego
@Brenda S. — Yes, Zenyatta was a good “doer” after racing. She did not exhibit fatigue or changes in eating after racing. Steve Willard, her exercise rider, said, “Zenyatta couldn’t blow out a candle. Looked like she had just been out for a jog.”
Mario told us that Zenyatta ate one and one-half bags (45 lbs. bags) of carrots a day. She did not care that much for apples, but loved pears. He gave her half of his banana one day — she apparently was surprised at its consistency and swallowed it without chewing. And, of course, she would search his pockets for hidden treats.
The Kennedys in San Diego
@Judy Berube — We feel so very fortunate to have “discovered” Zenyatta early and were close enough that we saw most of her races and, due to John Shirreffs’ generosity, were able to visit her at Barn 55 over several years beginning in her four year-old season.

@ The Kennedys – I can’t thank you enough for all the information you share and for answering my query. I’m not at all surprised to learn that Zenny ate as usual after a race. I wish that I had known she wasn’t too fond of apples before I went to LE, I would have put all pears in her goodie pack along with the carrots and mints but maybe she shared and gave TT the apples. You are indeed very fortunate to have known her and her Barn 55 friends up close and we are fortunate to have you sharing with us.

Just found Cayenne Pepper’s Passion. She is adorable. What pretty markings face and feet. Do you mind if I post the link for everyone to see her? Hugs, J.B.

@DJ really loved the prayers as I was really busy and no time to post but read the prayers yesterday. Thanks
@Kimberly Potter
Glad the baby is “holding steady”. Sometimes they need encouragement.
@Terry Crow
Great joke !!! Made my busy day.
@Trina Nagele
Lovely poem for Eveline and for Mario
@Cynthia H
Love Trina’s poem
@Judy B
Great link on It’s Tricky. Hope she wins. Agree with Kennedy’s,
hope they start early enough to get a halter on her before the race.
Thanks for posting the link on Blind Luck in the Pacific Classic, should be a great race.

@Gloria Jeanne
Thanks for the great link on Eric Kronfeld’s babies.
E and Nerid are the best. I guess he did not come to see Zenny as he did not own her and want to “jinx” anything.
Wonder who is going to own “V” ‘s foal; full sibling to Zenyatta??? Really hope they do not sell, but maybe they will and get
$10 million or more. Hope they don’t go through another Barbaro full sibling thing; trying to get another Z. She is one of a kind and not replicable; other than in her bronze of course!!!
@Kennedys
Thanks for all the updated pics of “E” she is such a beautiful
filly, and EK is right her maiden is going to be the most watched race for a maiden race.

Dear Amanda Fuller:
Thought Life is Sweet was bred to Bernardini. Do you remember where you read she was bred to Street Cry? Hugs, J.B.

Dear Signofthetimes:
You’re so welcome. Yes, she is tricky. Hope she wins too. If you get the chance, check out the link I posted on this Diary of Barbara L’s latest Blog. There is a photo of Shack rolling in the dirt that’s priceless. Hugs, J.B.
Amanda Fuller
@judy berube, it was on a blog that had what notiable mares and who they were bred to for 2011. I’ll see if I can find it again and post the link.

@Kennedys, thank you so much for sharing your Z stories. I wish Dottie would offer more little tidbits like this…just understanding a little more of Zenny’s other life makes me smile. She was in such great hands at Barn 55 just as she is at LE. I’m still praying for a book on Z’s life, complete with loads of pictures. She is still the only horse who has my heart.
tony and sue
To the Kennedy’s, your Mario stories are priceless. Now, if only HE would write a book about his life with The Queen!
Z, we hope you had a wonderful day relaxing and just being a “horse”.
Amanda Fuller
@ judy berube, ok i found it but you are right Life is Sweet went to Bernardini there was another mare in line w/ Life is Sweet that was bred to Street Cry.
LouAnn Cingel of Union, Missouri
Really liked the pics and appreciate seeing them. Think of you each and every day and am so glad that you are doing so well and are happy. I love you lots Zenyatta! Thoughts of you help me get through each and every day. You mean so much to me!!
Barbara Wood
@Denise in Az–I finally got in! She is adorable! She looks like a feisty little “pepper”. Thank you so much for sharing. It took me several screens before it would accept the”pinto66″, but it finally worked.
@signofthetimes–I agree with you that Zenny will never be replicated. She’s the horse of a lifetime.
Good night, sweet Z– hope you have pleasant “dandelion greens” dreams. Love you always.

@Tony and Sue
A book about Z by Mario would really sell. Also,
Steve Woodard contributions on how to ride Z.

Too cute… Maybe that is what my boy needs as he has been sulking here at Saratoga. Maybe some dandelion leaves are just what the doctor ordered. He wouldn’t even eat a peppermint on Sunday. I was told today he was his old self… but the leaves will maybe be a bonus. Off to the farmers market tomorrow…thanks Zenyatta for the “just what the doctor ordered” news.
Your John is so right to change up the routine to end boredom. Saratoga has so many neat places to bring horses after a workout. Some trainers take advantage of that. A great trainer will…just like your JOHN!
I loved the Bronze Beauty photos. She is a hoot. She seems to be on her own schedule… sort of like mine…Sleeeeeeep. That girl has attitude! Reminds me of someone else…mmmmm could it be…YOU…Z?

@Judy B
Yes, love that photo of Shakelford rolling. He is such a character.
Between Shack, It’s Tricky and Liberian Freighter
We could have a BIG PARTY!!!!
Oh I forget which race I was watching, I saw another
Freighter something, relative????
Anne
Also on the return trail is Z’s half brother, Souper Spectacular. He had a published work yesterday here at Saratoga for trainer Seth Benzel.
