Good Morning,
I love this! Look who is at Del Mar having a few days of RNR. It is my dear friend, Jeanne Mayberry. She is the wonderful lady, who along with her daughter, April, taught ME my very first lessons at their training center in Ocala, Florida.
Jeanne is taking a few days off and relaxing in good Ol’ DEL MAR. She is here with her other daughter, Summer, and her family. In the photo with Jeanne is her grandson, BRYAN. Jeanne loves to come to the barn and visit with her ‘students’. I know John and Dottie always keep her up-to-date on how ‘we’ are all doing. It makes it so much FUN for everyone to stay involved.
April went on a vacation a bit earlier…so everyone is taking a moment to refresh before they gear up for another season of ‘breaking yearlings’. Dottie always equates this to ‘going to school’. The yearlings start arriving in late September (after the Keeneland Yearling Sale) to begin the program. They settle in and get acquainted with their new surroundings, and then start to learn their lessons: to wear tack, have a rider on their back and then learn to take the cues from the rider to jog, gallop, and lengthen stride etc. All of this is so, so important to every horse and his / her future.
These lessons progress throughout the winter and then in March, April, May and June, the individual horses… now 2…leave Jeanne and April to go to the racetrack to their respective trainers. When the horse leaves the training center depends on several factors. The most important is HOW the horse is doing and the progress he/she is making. Just like humans, horses develop at different levels and different stages. Some are fast learners and quickly ‘get it’. Others, may need a bit more one-to-one attention to learn a task and and master it. Learning for this horse may progress at a slower pace.
Meeting individual differences, in MY TEAM’S opinion, is just as important for a horse as it is for a young child and a developing student.
Just like school, the students leave each year to go on to a new teacher. The same principle applies here…the 2 year olds leave to go on to the race track, to their new trainer, and the next stage of their career.
I must say, I adore Jeanne and April. They always treated ME with such LOVE and PATIENCE. So much goes into the development of a race horse…and every lesson, every consideration, and every single person who touches you can have such an impact on your future. I’ve been SO BLESSED!
I think they feel I was ‘REALLY A TERRIFIC STUDENT’. I know they are EXTREMELY PROUD OF ME and WHAT I HAVE ACCOMPLISHED.
With Love,
Hugs to All~ (Have fun in Del Mar, Jeanne!)

@Mario. Happy belated birthday. I keep remembering the video of Z’s first day free in her paddock and you were there. She knew you and came to you and the reunion was beautiful. She’ll know you the rest of her life and remember you as the loving, caring person that took care of her every day at Barn 55. I know you must miss her but must also know she is in a wonderful place now and is being taken such good care of. I hope you have many, many very Happy Birthdays!
Arlene

@Trina N: D, Girl, that is just beautiful. I so got teary eyed. The last line is fine, all the millions that know and love her, know that the beauty is on the inside and outside. WOW, Zenyatta’s World has so many talented and creative people…This poem is the best describing Zenyatta/Mario. Kennedy’s in SD with the Zenyatta/Mario stories..Thank you, Trina, Lisa g.

@Lisa g-It IS the money. I am sure that a lot of cash has already changed hands. After all, other than the nominating fees, etc., how does the Breeder’s Cup committee continue to wield such power? Uncle Mo’s owner has suggested that Belmont or some other track in that area hold its own alternative racing program at the same time as the Breeder’s Cup. If someone or something tried that, a lot of lawyers would get rich. However, that does not mean that I do not agree with Uncle Mo’s owner. I was at the first Breeder’s Cup at Hollywood Park and hope to go to many others. However, if the distance was too great I probably wouldn’t attend. This is what eastern folks have had to deal with. The Breeder’s Cup committee was ready to sign a contract with Oak Tree Racing Association to make Santa Anita more or less the permanent home for the event. If Frank Stronach, the owner of Santa Anita, had not stepped in and evicted Oak Tree, this would have become a reality. The event only went to Churchill Downs because of Stronach’s actions. Why would Stronach evict Oak Tree? He wanted the benefits of having the Breeder’s Cup races as an official Santa Anita event. Now that the CHRB has been complicit and awarded Oak Tree’s old dates to Santa Anita, he is free to do whatever he wants. Mere money would not stand in his way.

@Terry Crow, WOW, there is alot more to this than what Mike Repole was saying. The way he stated this, as I thought I was understanding it, was to rotate different locations..for fairness to fans, trainers, owners, and the beautiful horses. Money and politics..Keep me updated if you hear and/or read any more…I know if I hear anything…I will @Terry Crow, immediately for further clarification. Thanks, BTW, where’s today’s joke..Lisa g.
Lisa g
@Terry Crow, it would be a shame if Mike R did not go to the BC 2012, he has great horses. To me, it would be, um, not a smart move.
Terry Crow
@Lisa g-I share your concern. In this world of politics, even horsey stuff is not immune. From his point of view, and mine, Mike Repole is correct. Sure, he wants the Breeder’s Cup in his own back yard. Who can blame him? He is a huge owner and his a huge stake in the sport. I am sure he knows all of this stuff, the big owners always do. A lot of rhetoric is strictly for publication. As they say, stay tuned. OK, I’m off my soapbox now and back to normal. @Judy Berube, Debbie G, Deborah Richman, signofthetimes and DJ-Glad you enjoyed the joke. I wasn’t sure about that one, had second thoughts after I posted it. @Shari Voltz-It was nice having some posts from Brooke. Are you still in contact with her? if so, tell her that we miss her thoughts. Horse racing can use all of the young fans it can get. @Abigail from Montreal-Agree with you about you tube. It is a treasure trove. Native Diver came alive for me again there.@Karen Gogue-Is there room for a jester in the queen’s court? If there is another thread later, I will post another joke. In the meantime, here is today’s “offering”-A lawyer and the Pope died at the same time, both going to heaven. They were met at the pearly gates by Saint Peter who conducted them to their residences. The Pope’s house was spartan, with bare floors and only three rooms. They came to the lawyer’s house, and it was huge with wall to wall carpeting, king sized bed, indirect lighting, color TV and Jacuzzi. The lawyer said “There must be a mistake. THis must be the Pope’s house.” St. Peter said “there’s no mistake. This is your house. We have lots of Popes here but you’re our very first lawyer.”

New joke for new thread-A man enters a bar and says that this is a very smart dog, he can talk. If you spot me a drink, I will have him talk for you. Bartender gives him a drink, and says let’s hear him. Man turns to dog and says what is on top of this building which keeps the rain out? The dog says ruf ruf. The guy says see he said it was a roof. But if your not satisfied with that, give me another drink and I will have him answer another question. When he got the next drink, he says to the dog, who was the most famous baseball player of all time? Dog says ruf ruf. Man says see, he said Babe Ruth. At this point, the bartender has the bouncer throw both the man and the dog out. Dog looks up at the man and says “Maybe I should have said Willie Mays.” Bonus dog joke–A dog walks into a bar and requests a drink. Bartender refuses saying we don’t serve dogs here. Dog demands his equal rights and bartender pulls a gun and shoots the dog in its foot. Months later, after the dog’s foot heals, he returns to the bar wearing a gun. He then announces “I’m looking for the man who shot my paw.”
