Good Morning,
I love this! Look who is at Del Mar having a few days of RNR. It is my dear friend, Jeanne Mayberry. She is the wonderful lady, who along with her daughter, April, taught ME my very first lessons at their training center in Ocala, Florida.
Jeanne is taking a few days off and relaxing in good Ol’ DEL MAR. She is here with her other daughter, Summer, and her family. In the photo with Jeanne is her grandson, BRYAN. Jeanne loves to come to the barn and visit with her ‘students’. I know John and Dottie always keep her up-to-date on how ‘we’ are all doing. It makes it so much FUN for everyone to stay involved.
April went on a vacation a bit earlier…so everyone is taking a moment to refresh before they gear up for another season of ‘breaking yearlings’. Dottie always equates this to ‘going to school’. The yearlings start arriving in late September (after the Keeneland Yearling Sale) to begin the program. They settle in and get acquainted with their new surroundings, and then start to learn their lessons: to wear tack, have a rider on their back and then learn to take the cues from the rider to jog, gallop, and lengthen stride etc. All of this is so, so important to every horse and his / her future.
These lessons progress throughout the winter and then in March, April, May and June, the individual horses… now 2…leave Jeanne and April to go to the racetrack to their respective trainers. When the horse leaves the training center depends on several factors. The most important is HOW the horse is doing and the progress he/she is making. Just like humans, horses develop at different levels and different stages. Some are fast learners and quickly ‘get it’. Others, may need a bit more one-to-one attention to learn a task and and master it. Learning for this horse may progress at a slower pace.
Meeting individual differences, in MY TEAM’S opinion, is just as important for a horse as it is for a young child and a developing student.
Just like school, the students leave each year to go on to a new teacher. The same principle applies here…the 2 year olds leave to go on to the race track, to their new trainer, and the next stage of their career.
I must say, I adore Jeanne and April. They always treated ME with such LOVE and PATIENCE. So much goes into the development of a race horse…and every lesson, every consideration, and every single person who touches you can have such an impact on your future. I’ve been SO BLESSED!
I think they feel I was ‘REALLY A TERRIFIC STUDENT’. I know they are EXTREMELY PROUD OF ME and WHAT I HAVE ACCOMPLISHED.
With Love,
Hugs to All~ (Have fun in Del Mar, Jeanne!)

Zenny, Great post today. We always love hearing tidbits about your past because you have the most facinating history! You laned in the best hands from the beginning which helped you evolve into magnificient mare you are today. We spent a few minutes today looking at your race videos and still get chills watching you do your thing. One in a million is exactly who you are, our Queen. Love you bunches.
Brenda S..
Dear Zenny, what a wonderful lesson you and Dottie have given us today. YOU were sent to the best teachers and allowed to progress at a pace that was best for you and look what happened. YOU became the best and did it in a loving, happy way. It’s so obvious that you loved what you were doing, dancing your way to the track and then getting down to business when it counted and I have no doubt that your little one will inherit those invaluable traits.
I am always thankful for teachers who will spend a few extra minutes with the “special needs” student, it means so much.

@ Karen Gogue; I have been away from my computer, and I admit I just have enough time to read Z’s-Dotties posts. My friend told me today of something I missed-the surprise for Dottie. There is a delay as to when you can present this, is it too late for me! Otherwise I will send my own well wishes, but I do not want to spoil all of your surprise.

@Lisa g-I do somewhat agree with the sentiments expressed by Uncle Mo’s owner about the location of the Breeders Cup. I am sure money was a determining factor, and the tracks bidding to be the host all realize this. So, if Belmont fell short, blame its management. I wonder what the reaction would have been if Oak Tree Racing Association had been awarded the status of host on a semi-permanent basis?
Brenda S..
Oh Zenny – I didn’t want to suggest that YOU were a “special needs” student, I just have a special need to be thankful for those special teachers.

@ LouAnn Cingel of Union, Missouri, Glad to hear you’re feeling better. Prayers for your speedy full recovery.

@ Trina Nagele, Thank you so much. I’ll be sending you an e-mail. Blessings.

To Dottie O. Moore:
Dear Dottie:
I think you might have confused posts by Signofthetimes on Goldikova. Although, I love her too, I didn’t post any links on her in the past few days. Signofthetimes did though, and I think those might be the links you enjoyed. Hugs, J.B.

Sweet Z, I absolutely loved this post and I agree with all you have said. (It is how you have been treated & trained, the simple love for a horse too, even after the training day, always loved.) I am so pleased to meet another one of your special friends. love with 2 kisses on your soft nose.

Dear Z Fans:
Here’s a short Bio on Kris S., Vertigineux’s Sire and Z’s Maternal Grandsire. Think Vertigineux and Z inherited his good looks and conformation. Hugs, J.B. http://www.speedsnolimit.com/tigs.cfm

Zenyatta I love the post today. This is so true. I have taught special education for over 20 years and each child must be allowed to progress at their own individual pace. I have seen a child one year not able to grasp a concept and then get it the next year. Zenny did you hear me singing your song today? I was singing it through the halls at school. It is official I hung up my MOYATTA on the board today. That is the name of my classroom. I hope you like it sweet girl. You are so much apart of my life. I just want you to know a new group coming in will be learning about the country along with horses 101 :) I have my horse station and I have to say it is rather cool. I think the children will like it. Well time to walk the dogs. Enjoy your night and I love you. Hugs and Kisses, Shari XXXOOO
@ Terry thank you for the compliment :)

Dear Z Fans:

@Eveline, this is a correction. I have not seen Edward Gal ride Sisther de jeu. I just watched them on Youtube. She is a lovely mare…Let’s see how the German rider rides Toto?? I met the new owner of Toto many years ago at Madison Square Garden for the National Horse Show. I hope they take really great care of him…

@ Dawn Conrad; You have had an exceptional trip for sure!! I want to go back to Kentucky to visit th horse farms, and especially see Lane’s Ends stallions again. This is the most impressive horse farm. They are so gracious there, and when horses are not in stud, we got so close to them as they brought them out from their stalls; was the greatest expeience!! One could see why AP Indy is, although older now, the great stallion he has earned during his years. Glad you had your great trip.

@LouAnn, I hope you are feeling better. Yes, Z makes me smile and feel better also!

teaching is a “work of heart”, truly, and you Zenyatta have had the best!
Delrene
I LOVED the picture and the post today. Thank you Dottie for the background on Zenyatta’s first teachers. They were such an important part of her life. Every person that had even the tiniest part in bringing up our big beautiful girl must have such wonderful memories. Jeanne, April and your grand son have a great time and if you like Mexican food, right in Solana Beach area there are 3 great stops. Tony’s Jacal, Fidel’s and Don Chuy’s. Always fun. Lots of good places, but I just had a birthday lunch for a friend over at Tony’s today so I thought I’d mention it. Very close to the racetrack too.
And for the gentleman from NJ, there is a wonderful video called “On the Muscle” about trainer Richard Mandella and a great DVD about a wonderful racehorse, Lost in the Fog. I cannot remember the title of the DVD, but just google “Lost in the Fog” Steve Haskins and Joe Drape have wonderful racehorse books and articles to.
Z – have a wonderful day lolling and relaxing in the blue grass.

SHARI VOLTZ: Is the Herald Star-Weirton Daily Times well read in your area? Would appreciate your opinion! Thank you!
Max
@judy berube. Nice article about Mr. Commons. I am a little confused from the photo. Is that horse in the photo Mr. Commons? It seems to say that it is Jaycito. Either way the horse in the photo is gorgeous, and reminds me of Bernie’s Stay Thirsty.

Dear Zenny,
Love to hear about your lessons and what a quick learner you were and how competative you were. A great work ethic !!!
The Mayberry’s training farm sound wonderful, peaceful and a great place to grow up and develop your in born talents as a racehorse. Hope you are having a great day.

Great link to Kris S. He sure has stamped his fillies/mares/colts and their offspring with size and great balance. What a wonderful horse.

Dear Judy B – Thank you, thank you for the link of Zenny in the snow, I could watch it every day, several times a day in fact. She is clearly enjoying herself and I’m surprised she didn’t roll and make a snow angel.

How thoughtful of you to create a poem for our B-day.

“Charlie” from Delran, NJ: Welcome! I am the woman who runs THE VAULT: Horse Racing Past and Present and there are several articles on there about great thoroughbreds of today and yesteryear. The subjects I write about will continue to have an international flavour but as I only began THE VAULT last February I am really only warming up!!!! RE: Your question. Here’s an American seller who has a HUGE range of DVD’s. I have yet to purchase any from him but he seems very nice and communicates promptly. Here’s the link: http://www.horseracingdvd.com/index.php?p=listing&lid=23
@ Terry Crow: THANK YOU!
@Judy Berube: THANK YOU for recommending THE VAULT to Charlie. You are a sweetheart!
@the Kennedys: THANK YOU for allowing me to use your Mario & Zenny stories. MUCH APPRECIATED!
