Happy ‘Beginning of the Week’ Everyone,
I hope you had a lovely weekend. I did. As you may know, for ME, everything is pretty quiet and quite relaxing at this time. I’m handling the weather perfectly…and am truly enjoying keeping up with all of YOU on the current racing and industry news!
The weekend’s races proved to be very exciting. The Arlington Million stakes races were very contentious and showcased some terrific European horses. Garrett Gomez rode there on Saturday and told Dottie yesterday that it was actually hailing a couple times during the races that day. Weather at this time of the year changes so rapidly at many locations around the country.
Then at DEL MAR yesterday, my dear MOSS PAL, COZI ROSIE, won the John Mabee G-2 on the turf. She had the perfect trip cutting to the inside and staying on the rail to earn her victory. YEAH, COZI! A great job by all!
She is a homebred for my owners. When you breed a horse who becomes a graded stakes winner, the achievement takes on a special significance. You have literally been involved with this horse from the first moments of planning the mating to every stage thereafter of the horse’s life and development. Black-type races are held in such high regard in our sport! Thus, winning one becomes a very rewarding achievement!
There are technically 2 ways one may acquire horses in our industry. Firstly: you may purchase them via public auctions, private purchases, or claiming races conducted at the race track. The second option is that you may breed your mare to a stallion of your choice and then you own the resulting foal.
I was purchased at public auction, the 2005 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. COZI ROSIE is a homebred…meaning she was bred by our owners. The Moss’ own her mom, FELIDIA…who by the way was a homebred herself, and bred her to PLEASANTLY PERFECT. He just happens to stand here at Lane’s End Farm and resides in our stallion division. It is all very special…and WE are all very proud of ‘our girl’!
The racing at Del Mar is dark today. This means they are closed. Saratoga and Delaware, however, are racing on Mondays during the summer.
If you have a moment, enjoy the fun!
With Love, Hugs to All~ Z
PS…I just heard Goldikova lost this morning. As usual, her effort was terrific….and as always, I wish her the very best!

Thanks for the update. I saw Cozi Rosie win yesterday it was a great race congrats to the connections. Everyone in my group yesterday were talking about the fact that we will never see a race as exciting as your 2009 BC Classic win. Together my group of friends have over 300 years of race watching and the thrills you gave us will always be remembered as our favorites. My dear friends Paige and Paula Smith (Paula photographed you many times at barn 55) all agree that meeting you and being in your presence was beyond words. Your energy, strength, confidence and purity as one of God’s greatess creatures was a blessing we are all so glad to have experienced. Please Dottie we would love for you to post new photos of Z and her baby bump. We all need a Z photo fix! Keep all the news coming Zenyatta you are the greatest!

@Arlene– excellent point. I wanted to say the same thing (about Dawn and Tinner’s Way) but couldn’t think how to phrase it. Thank you.

@Eveline—That video you posted on #318 of Stacy Westfall competing without saddle or bridle in the reining class was FANTASTIC. Thanks so much for posting. For anyone who missed it, here it is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hoW4cwf507g&feature=related
@Denise—Congratulations to you, your mare, and the new little roan filly.
@Terry Crow—LOL. Thank you so much!
@Christine Coleman—Loved hearing your dream about Zenny and Rooster.

@All who enjoyed the Mario/Zenyatta gems — We are so pleased that they brought joy, smiles and maybe a few tears.
Mario told us that while he misses Zenyatta every day and knows he will never see another like her, he is so happy for her — that she now can be “just a horse and eat grass.”

Dear Zenny,
Love the update and pic of the paddock at Saratoga.
The Mosses must be so proud of their homebred Cozi Rosie,
cute name. Bet they can’t wait for your homebred to run. Everyone is dreaming about it. Sooo glad you are resting and relaxing like a good broodmare should, eating healthy and keeping that fetus warm and growing. XXXXOOOO

Maybe her size (15.3, not good turf and weight) was not in her favor. But Goldi put in a great great effort !!!! The filly that won
had either 3 or 5 lbs less. It is definately harder for smaller horses to carry larger weight.

Goldi has a half-sister who also raced today and won (she avenged her previous rival in her last race) Here is article about Goldi and her half-sis

@Abigail from Montreal — Yes, of course, you have our permission.
@Denise in AZ — Congrats on your beautiful, sorrel filly.
@signofthetimes — Thank you for posting the story of your TB gelding. Just love stories and observations of animal behavior. And your obvious knowledge and experience is much appreciated.

Zenyatta I am glad you had a relaxing day. You so deserve this kind of life now :) I am proud of Cozi Rosie. I read about her in the Bloodhorse. Thank you for explaining homebred. I am learning more and more everyday. I worked in my classroom from around 8:30 until 2:30 and did not stop for lucnch. I got a lot done. I will go in again tomorrow to work on papers, plans and 100 and one other things. But I love it. Hung a lot of my horse pictures from Kentucky. Oh Zenny I loved that weekend so much. I will never forget and hope to go back next summer. I just loved every horse I met and what suprised me was I thought I would not like Blame but I did like him a lot. He was just so sweet and gentle with me. Like I said before he told me your one hot mama. I love you Z. Hugs and Kisses, Shari XXXOOO

What a wonderful thing to have a brand new foal, congradulations.
@ The Kennedy from SD
So glad you are able to have first hand experience at Del Mar
to share. Mario is one very special groom. He speaks horse soo very well. And he acts horse as well. Letting Zenny groom him.
It is too cute when horses out in the field are seen grooming each other, it is a very special way to say “I love you” in horse
language.

@The Kennedy in SD
Mario may not see much of Zenny, but he has all of her homebreds to take care of as he did her sooo very well.
It is sooo very important for a horse to be a horse. Notice
whenever the trainers want then to rest and clear their
minds they send them somewhere really beautiful, Winstar
or Gahamn Motion’s beautiful training facility. That way they can put on a happy face and come back. It is really amazing that Zenny was never turned out and literally trained and raced straight for 3-4 years. That really says a lot about Barn 55 and everyone there.

@Terry Crow
Love todays joke, they get better and better.

To: JACKIE FEINBERG, who on #318 confided that her birthday is this week, but that she “would rather forget about it:”
Often as we get older
Our zeal for our birthday gets colder,
But friends and family gather near,
So don’t shed a tear,
Dearest Jackie,
As we say
Have a blessed birthday this week
‘Cuz we sure are glad that you’re here
By cracky,
And hope you’ll find all that you seek!

@signofthetimes, your post about the quality of people at Barn 55 speaks volumes about how Zenny was treated during her tenute there. To think they kept her healthy, HAPPY and always ready for the next race is nothing short of amazing. And she consistantly won! Just look at Mario, Steve, Frank and her John. Their faces reveal the truth. All of these men speak “horse”, know how to get into their hearts and minds. Zenny was no easy filly in those early years but each of these men knew exactly how to handle her so her spirit remained strong and her mind alert. We know she loved Carmen, too, and felt comfortable around her. We wonder if there is another barn staff who demonstrates the true excellence that is the signature of Barn 55. If happy horses are any indication, John’s barn is simply THE BEST there is.
tony and sue
opps, tenute should be tenure.

@Abigail from Montreal. Thank you for posting the links to Cozi Rosie’s win and that about Golden Fleece. It is very good to read about the horses from the past, but it is even better to see photos and video of such famous ancestors. CR clearly comes from a great family. Her win on the rail was a brilliant run for her and her jockey. It was very nice to see both her and her grandfather in action, thanks to you. Congratulations to CR and her Moss family on a well deserved victory.

@Barbara Woods
Rock Hard Ten is 17.3 hands a huge TB, sire is Kris S, Zenny’s
dam sire. Gary Stevens rode him and said riding him was like
riding silk and he covered more ground that it appeared.
Here is his pic from Stallion Directory and then some others to follow: What do you think?

You can see what a huge, muscled guy he is;
Oh by the way Nerid, Rock Hard Ten is her sire is owned by

Dear Dawn and Abigail, Thank you both so much for those very kind words and thanks to Dottie for making it possible for us to get to know so many fine friends.
Terry C – loved the joke, I still had a milkman in 1967 when I emigrated.

@signofthetimes (and Tony and Sue) — So very well stated. The quality of the staff at Barn 55 along with the intelligence and professionalism of the amazing Zenyatta allowed her to remain in training without being turned out from early in her two year old season until she retired at close to seven years. Truly remarkable.

@ Trina Nagele

You both are so very fortunate to be so close to Barn 55 and all the Cali race tracks and have the time to see, get to know and photo the horses. Thanks so much!!!
