Happy ‘Beginning of the Week’ Everyone,
I hope you had a lovely weekend. I did. As you may know, for ME, everything is pretty quiet and quite relaxing at this time. I’m handling the weather perfectly…and am truly enjoying keeping up with all of YOU on the current racing and industry news!
The weekend’s races proved to be very exciting. The Arlington Million stakes races were very contentious and showcased some terrific European horses. Garrett Gomez rode there on Saturday and told Dottie yesterday that it was actually hailing a couple times during the races that day. Weather at this time of the year changes so rapidly at many locations around the country.
Then at DEL MAR yesterday, my dear MOSS PAL, COZI ROSIE, won the John Mabee G-2 on the turf. She had the perfect trip cutting to the inside and staying on the rail to earn her victory. YEAH, COZI! A great job by all!
She is a homebred for my owners. When you breed a horse who becomes a graded stakes winner, the achievement takes on a special significance. You have literally been involved with this horse from the first moments of planning the mating to every stage thereafter of the horse’s life and development. Black-type races are held in such high regard in our sport! Thus, winning one becomes a very rewarding achievement!
There are technically 2 ways one may acquire horses in our industry. Firstly: you may purchase them via public auctions, private purchases, or claiming races conducted at the race track. The second option is that you may breed your mare to a stallion of your choice and then you own the resulting foal.
I was purchased at public auction, the 2005 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. COZI ROSIE is a homebred…meaning she was bred by our owners. The Moss’ own her mom, FELIDIA…who by the way was a homebred herself, and bred her to PLEASANTLY PERFECT. He just happens to stand here at Lane’s End Farm and resides in our stallion division. It is all very special…and WE are all very proud of ‘our girl’!
The racing at Del Mar is dark today. This means they are closed. Saratoga and Delaware, however, are racing on Mondays during the summer.
If you have a moment, enjoy the fun!
With Love, Hugs to All~ Z
PS…I just heard Goldikova lost this morning. As usual, her effort was terrific….and as always, I wish her the very best!

Hi Dottie & Zenny: My! As it turns out, your friend Abigail has TONS to SHARE today. First and foremost, I send you kisses my sweet Lady Z X 2 — several for you and several for Baby Zee. I hope it’s not too humid there in Kentucky. Here in Montreal it’s only 26 degrees (F) but WITH the HUMIDITY, it’s 34 degrees F!!!!! Poor Mr. Puppy is following the kitties advice and has flaked out here beside me for most of the afternoon….
@ Vicky O: I don’t know if there are any books on the Mosses, but there is certainly lots of info on Jerry Moss if you GOOGLE A & M records. But this might get you started: http://www.gregsonfoundation.com/jerryandannmoss-honored.htm
@ THE MOSSES & SHERRIFFS & ALL: As I mentioned in a previous post, Cozi Rosie is not only a homebred but the granddaughter of the GREAT Golden Fleece, a son of Nijinsky who was brilliant but met with a very sad end. I also know that the Mosses bred Lexicon, another baby from Fidelia. I am so hungry to know how the Mosses “caught on” to Golden Fleece. Given his short life and his therefore small immediate offspring, that’s remarkable in itself. However, for anyone interested, here is one of my photos of Golden Fleece from my FB page. If you read the text at the bottom, it is a summary of his brilliance & what happened to him:

How great was this colt? Here’s the tape of him winning the Epsom Derby in 1982. NOTE: The tape is damaged at the beginning but stay with it, because his victory that day is AMAZING! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Z9sgFZKIO0
@ DAWN CONRAD: I just LOVED the description of your trip & how GREAT that you met up with Shari & Brenda. BRENDA has been so good to me…She put a mint on Secretariat’s grave for me during her visit & sent me the photos. THEN she mailed me the bit on Zenny last televised that I couldn’t see here in Montreal! And then to tell me that you thought of me when you visited Roberto’s grave, Dawn. THAT’S JUST SO AMAZING OF YOU!!! I, too, will be downloading your post because when I take my own trip to Kentucky, I’m copying you!!!! (If that’s ok, that is!) But in my case I will be hammering down the walls @ Overbrook Farm to visit Terlingua’s grave.
@ Shari: I will post out your Secretariat book this week. Wanted to be sure you were at home & then got busy myself…
@ Brenda S : Ditto re: your little surprise from me!
@ the Kennedys: Would you give me permission when I do something on THE VAULT on Mario & Zenny to quote a few of the stories you told last post? Naturally, I would credit YOU!
LOVE TO ALL ON THIS MY FAVOURITE PLACE TO BE IN VIRTUAL REALITY!!!!

Zenyatta,
As always, thank you for the interesting info. Coming on your site everyday is like going to school. I’m always learning something new. Hope you and your gal pals are enjoying your day. What’s the latest gossip at LE. :) Congratulations to Cozie Rosie. Sad that Gio Ponte and Goldikova lost their race. :( Stay happy & Healthy Big Mama. kiss kiss..
Barbara Grimaldi
Dearest Zenyatta and Dottie: when I think that your breeder did not keep you and the Mosses were touched by an angel and bought you, I have to sit down at the reality of it all. We may never have known you! We would not have this site, where today I learned about home breds. I hope the Mosses keep ALL of your foals and John trains them all. Love to you always, sweet Zenny. Thanks, Dottie!!!
Marilu V
Dear Zeny: Congratulations to Cozi Rosie for her win! That is great news for all of us. I am sad to hear Goldikova lost this morning. She is a special lady too. Sometimes we have to lose for others to realize how great we are. Like you Zeny. Despite losing for the first time last November – everyone in the industry recognizes that you are one of the greatest if not the greatest. Hugs and Kisses, Marilu

@Dawn Conrad: If I had but known you would be in Kansas City. I would have met you at the Plaza. I go there all the time. It is a wonderful place to go out and eat. I’m so glad you enjoyed it. Your trip sounds great glad you were able to go.

This is a bonus joke dedicated to Diana S. I hope she likes it. Roy Rogers had just purchased a new pair of boots. Going out one day to check on Trigger, Roy stepped in a pile of…well, suffice to say that Dale told him to leave his boots outside on the porch until he could clean them up. Roy did so and went inside for dinner. IN the meantime a cougar wandering around on the property spied the boots, grabbed them in his mouth and headed for the wilderness. Roy, seeing his new boots heading for the hills, pulled on a pair of old boots and ran out and saddled up Trigger and headed for the hills to cut off the escape path of the cougar. Several hours later, Roy returned, new boots in hand and the cougar stretched over the back of Trigger. Dale looking at the scene in front of her said “Pardon me Roy is that the cat that chewed your new shoes?”

@Dawn Conrad: Sorry that was me posting not Char she had to send a web mail and used my pc to do it. Forgot to change out the address. Glad you had a great trip and glad you enjoyed the Plaza

Yes, Zenyatta, you’ve worked hard during your career and now it is time to take it easy, prop up your hooves, and eat a carrot or two while your baby grows big and healthy. :)

Dearest Beautiful Zenyatta –
Yes, it was a wonderful weekend of racing! I missed the Arlington Million but did get to see Cozi Rosie win at Del Mar on TVG – it is so good to learn all of the inside information on her – thank you – makes her win that much more special!
Dear Dawn Conrad – As always, your detailed recounting of your amazing trip was just wonderful to read. You write so beautifully and I just felt such a gamut of emotions while reading through it – thank you so much for taking all of us on your incredible journey with you! Having recently returned from Saratoga, I was instantly transported back there when reading your description of it! So glad you and your precious Mom got to enjoy the trip of a lifetime together!
Love to you all,
Elizabeth

be happy, mama Zenny. I’ve got a fractured right index finger tip, so my typing is limited, but never my enthusiasm for all things Zenyatta!

Zenny, it’s good to hear from you again! This site is always a wealth of information for us…I now understand the meaning of homebred and the significance of David finding YOU for the Mosses. Your foal will be a homebread for Jerry and Ann and treasured as one of their special dumplings. Your story is magical! To think of where you could have gone if it hadn’t been for David’s keen eye….we sure owe him a debt of gratitude for sure.

Dear Z and Dottie – Thanks so much for our “schooling lesson” this morning. Everything is so interesting. I’m glad you and the other girls are relaxing today.
If Harmonious couldn’t win, then happy it was Cozie Rosie and that everyone came back safe and sound.

Guess what wonderful foal-to-be will also be a home-bred?
Hugs dear Zenny!

Dear Zenny, What good news you give us that you’re having a relaxing time and that the weather isn’t bothering you. It seems that you’re enjoying yourself and taking it easy as you move towards becoming a Mom. I’m sure that you must miss Sarah who is up in Saratoga taking great pictures for us all to enjoy. We’re all looking forward to her being back at LE so that we’ll get to see some up to date shots of YOU and your bump.
@ Dawn C – Welcome back, you’ve been missed but you and your Mom had a wonderful trip. It was such a pleasure to meet you both and I hope the few pictures I took of you with the boys at LE came out O.K. The few minutes with Langfuhr were fun, I think he understood and agreed with every word I said to him. Victoria and I are now looking forward to a quick trip to Saratoga this weekend to see Inglorious in the Alabama.
@ All – I noticed on #318, towards the end, that there were two posts from another Brenda S. It could be very confusing if there was ever a Z convention and there were two of us wearing Z Tags that said Brenda S. I don’t want to change my Tag but I think I’ll come up with a different ID for the diary.
Congratulations to Cozi Rosie and Mr. & Mrs Moss.

Dawn–many thanks for the generously shared words about your adventure with your Mom. I read and enjoyed every word. I had many similar experiences with my own Mom–who has now passed–and trust me, the memories are beyond value–cherish your times together. Thank you again for sharing. And thanks to Dottie and Team Zen for creating and breathing ongoing life into this post!!
