Happy ‘Beginning of the Week’ Everyone,
I hope you had a lovely weekend. I did. As you may know, for ME, everything is pretty quiet and quite relaxing at this time. I’m handling the weather perfectly…and am truly enjoying keeping up with all of YOU on the current racing and industry news!
The weekend’s races proved to be very exciting. The Arlington Million stakes races were very contentious and showcased some terrific European horses. Garrett Gomez rode there on Saturday and told Dottie yesterday that it was actually hailing a couple times during the races that day. Weather at this time of the year changes so rapidly at many locations around the country.
Then at DEL MAR yesterday, my dear MOSS PAL, COZI ROSIE, won the John Mabee G-2 on the turf. She had the perfect trip cutting to the inside and staying on the rail to earn her victory. YEAH, COZI! A great job by all!
She is a homebred for my owners. When you breed a horse who becomes a graded stakes winner, the achievement takes on a special significance. You have literally been involved with this horse from the first moments of planning the mating to every stage thereafter of the horse’s life and development. Black-type races are held in such high regard in our sport! Thus, winning one becomes a very rewarding achievement!
There are technically 2 ways one may acquire horses in our industry. Firstly: you may purchase them via public auctions, private purchases, or claiming races conducted at the race track. The second option is that you may breed your mare to a stallion of your choice and then you own the resulting foal.
I was purchased at public auction, the 2005 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. COZI ROSIE is a homebred…meaning she was bred by our owners. The Moss’ own her mom, FELIDIA…who by the way was a homebred herself, and bred her to PLEASANTLY PERFECT. He just happens to stand here at Lane’s End Farm and resides in our stallion division. It is all very special…and WE are all very proud of ‘our girl’!
The racing at Del Mar is dark today. This means they are closed. Saratoga and Delaware, however, are racing on Mondays during the summer.
If you have a moment, enjoy the fun!
With Love, Hugs to All~ Z
PS…I just heard Goldikova lost this morning. As usual, her effort was terrific….and as always, I wish her the very best!

HI Zenny–thank you for all the info. you give us. YOUR little one will be a homebred too.
@Dawn–WELCOME HOME! I’m so glad you are back. It sounds like the trip of a lifetime. Memories with your mom–how special they are. I have made a few trips with mine as well, but nothing that involved.
I’m so sorry (and I know you’re busy), but I have just a few questions:
1) Is Rock Hard Ten as impressive as everyone says?
2) Is Summmer Bird as lovely as I think he is?
3) How do you get to visit the Clydesdales? It was my understnding that they are only on the tour once a month. We cannot wait to hear more from you. We were all with you in spirit.
So glad you were able to help Tinner’s Way!

The more I read about the Mosses, the more impressed I am. Is there a book written about Jerry Moss? I suspect it is his attitude, and willingness to learn that has made him such a success, both in horses, and business in general. I would really like to learn more about Jerry Moss. Anyone? Tks,
vicky

@Dawn Conrad and Margaret-They say that you can still hear the hoofbeats of Beg Red at The Meadow late at night. @DMCQ-Shoe was indeed a special person. @Kimberly Potter-Hang in there- Better days are coming. @DJ, Judy Berube, Trina Nagele, Diana S and Barbara Wood-Here is today’s joke. It dates me a bit, but enjoy. There was once a clairvoyant little boy who could forsee the future. One night while saying his prayers, the little boy was heard to say “God bless mommy, God bless daddy, God bless grandma, goodbye grandpa.” The next day his grandfather dropped dead of a heart attack. A few weeks later, the little boy was praying “God bless mommy, God bless Daddy, goodbye grandma. The next day his poor grandmother was hit by a bus while crossing the street and killed. A month or so later, the little boy was praying and said “God bless mommy, goodbye daddy.” His father panicked. he had himself driven, very carefully and very slowly, to work by an armed guard in an armored security truck he hired. He couldn’t concentrate, however, thinking about those words. Goodbye daddy.” He finally cam home early, but very carefully. He was met at the front door by his wife, who said “What do you think happened today? The most awful thing. The milkman dropped dead on the back porch.”

Hi Zenny, thank you for so much for this wonderful Diary where you have taught us so much about so many different things. Please tell your Dottie what an excellent job she does as your scribe. Several people have expressed so well how much we appreciate everything about this site, and I just want to say DITTO! It is indeed a wonderful place, so full of information, caring, and friendshiop. @Dawn Conrad, Welcome home and bunches of hugs, you are missed.
@Ida Lee & Lisa Smith..Agreed on the Greatness of Goldikova, hope she wins next time. I have followed her from the beginning as I have Black Cavier, but am lacking new info on her to date.
@DJ..Welcome home, missed you and missed you so. JB helped us along in prayer while you were gone. Tell us, if you can, about your weekend. Welcome home, I missed you.

Hurray for all the home-breds! Maybe someday there will be a race category for them. In AKC dog shows there used to be a ‘Bred by Exhibitor’ class that was really fun. The TBs couldn’t have quite that (can you imagine, Z, Jerry Moss in the saddle for a race??? I think he’s rather tall), but there could be a ‘Breeder-Owner’ classification. Take care all.
Lisa g
@Zenyatta, The Jokster is back. Too Cute. You are fast TC.

CONGRATULATIONS TO YOUR MOSS PAL, COZI ROSIE. I WAS THRILLED TO BE AT DEL MAR AND WATCH THIS FANTASTIC RACE. WHAT FUN!!! CONGRATULATIONS TO YOUR OWNERS AND DOTTIE.
IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING DOTTIE IS THE PERSON WHO INITIALLY MATCHES THE MOSS MARES TO PERSPECTIVE SIRES. SHE THEN PRESENTS HER FINDINGS TO ANN AND JERRY. TOGETHER ALL THREE DECIDE WHO WILL BECOME “THE DADDY”. THIS WAS OBVIOUSLY A GREAT BREEDING.
THIS SAME TRIO DECIDED ON WHO WAS TO BECOME “THE DADDY” OF YOUR FIRST FOAL, DEAR ZENNY. AGAIN, THEY HAVE MADE A FABULOUS CHOICE.
HAVE FUN ON THE FARM…LANE’S END IS BEAUTIFUL…AS ARE YOU :)
Trina Nagele
WELCOME BACK, DAWN! So glad you had a great trip and that you are back with us again.
@EVELINE–Please help me out here. Is the last syllable of yuor name pronounced to rhyme with “line” or is it like Lynn? I have to get busy on your birthday poem. Thanks!
Quarterhossgal
Hi Queen Z…glad to hear you are relaxing and enjoying yourself. I had a beautiful trail ride on a good friend’s new horse, He was a perfect gentleman as we rode through lush pastures on a calm sunny day.
Gio Ponti always gives his all but was a little short at the finish. Go Cozi Rosie! My name is Rose! It so exciting to win with a home bred.
Have a great week Zenny.
Susan A.
Dear Zenyatta,
Thank you for teaching me so many new racing terms; I love them!

Hi Z….I hope the weather is nice there like here in Virginia. It was so nice this morning…even a little cool at first. I am looking forward to fall. I have your picture as my background on my computer …so I look at you every day. It is one of you by the fence in KY…looking so intense at someone…or something…maybe the camera that you love. I also have been listening every day to your song “Zenyatta” by Liza….I get chills and a tear of two of happiness every time. It is so wonderful to see what you have accomplished, the lives you have touched, and most of all …..wonderful to know you never were hurt….and are so happy now!! Hugs to you Z…..

Finally… My mare foaled last Wed night!! It’s a filly- sorrel w/ 2 stockings, and 2 socks.. was hoping for more painted markings, but she is healthy and full of herself, so that’s just fine! Had to share :) :) Cayenne Pepper’s Passion

Denise in AZ…Congratulations on your mare’s new foal!! Love her name! And I can tell she has left a tiny hoofprint on your heart already :)
Christine Coleman
Hi Zenyatta Coleman…Great horse of “mine” LOL I had a dream last night that you and my mischievous quarter horse got loose from the big pasture on my farm because some visitors left the pasture gate open. Somehow you two got out of wrought iron security gates at the entrance to the farm as well. I then WALKED from South Carolina back to L.A. looking for you and Rooster. How you two got to Hollywood Park is a mystery to me, but I found out someone found you and Rooster wandering around Hollywood Park and turned you in because your halters had my name and phone number on them! LOL What a gas! I learned this from outside this club I used to go to on Century Blvd. just west of the 405 many moons ago. It was called “Carolina West!” Someone asked if the horse I was looking for was a big 17 hand dark bay mare! I was so disappointed when I woke up cuz I realized I really did not own you! And I couldn’t bring you back home to our farm. Anyway…Thanks for more teaching about things related to TB racing beautiful girl! Take good care of your little foal who is safe and sound within your uterus. Love you Zenny! Have a beautiful day!

@Dawn C, Thank you for the travelogue to places I will probably not get to see.
@Denise, Glad to hear that your mare and foal are ok-it can be nervewracking!
To all Trott fans, see their website for charity event information. They will also be honoring Mike Smith at this event. Have a great week everyone!!
VickiS.
@Lindsey – You know these CA boys.. you get a little bit of weather and they freak out. I, myself, am a CA transplant from Chicago just recently. My hubby is from L.A. and when we first started dating, he was commuting to Chicago to see me. During a thunderstorm, I remember him saying, “You have weather here like on the Weather Channel!” It wasn’t even that bad of a storm for Chicago-land.
@JudyBerube – That pic of the horse “kicking off” the sales is awesome!
Eveline
@ Denise – Congrats, sure mom is happy not to carry all that weight in this heat! @ Trina – it’s een-uh, other lynn is the closest. @ Dawn – welcome back ,sounds like a trip of a lifetime, very special to share with your mother. Too bad both Goldikova and Gio Ponti had to run on soft turf which neither one likes. Good efforts from both of them!
