Good Morning,
Here is the activity from last evening in Saratoga. The view above is from the Art Gallery Walk…which goes around to The Buyers’ Lounge. Many potential bidders have assigned seats located right around the sales ring. You may use these seats during the auction or bid from wherever you would like.
The sales area is open to everyone. Any fan may attend a sale and observe what is happening from various areas in the sales pavilion. It is really quite a fascinating process to watch. There are so many facets to our industry that all work together to make it such an interesting and challenging business.
This Saratoga Yearling Sale is conducted in the evening…so people ‘dress’ for the occasion. At this point in a sale, your ‘homework’ is basically completed as far as deciding on the horses you’d like to bid upon during the session. You have reviewed the pedigrees to see how the individuals would fit into your racing and breeding programs. The physical examinations of the horses have been completed by the prospective buyers and their teams.
Another important step is to have your veterinarian examine your prospective purchases IN DEPTH to be sure the physical condition of each yearling you are interested in meets your satisfaction. He or she will check and double-check the horse’s throat (for breathing purposes), basic conformation, and x-rays.
If the yearling passes all of the requirements you may have for purchase, you then need to ‘mentally appraise’ the horse. In other words, how much do you feel this horse is really worth in today’s market….and most importantly…how much are YOU willing to spend to own this colt or filly? This step is truly very important. You want to be sure you have really decided in your own mind how much this horse is worth TO YOU!
Then…let the BIDDING BEGIN!
Last night’s auction was very active. People really want to purchase and own good horses. They look to the future and the hope of running in BIG RACES! That is the driving force behind our industry. Obviously, a high purchase price does NOT guarantee success…but it must be considered. After all, LOOK AT ME! That is what helps to make this sport so much FUN!
At this time, I’d like to send a HIGH HOOF to my dear BERNIE. His yearlings sold for very substantial prices. Hip #1 was an “OUT”….which means she was withdrawn from the sale before it started. This may happen for a number of reasons.
Then the action really began. BERNIE had a colt sell for $750,000…and fillies sell for $950,000 and $600,000…to name a few.
The ‘sales topper’…which means the highest price horse sold during the entire session….was a Medaglia d’ Oro colt who is a half brother to the Kentucky Derby winner, SUPER SAVER. This yearling is named Superfection! His winning bid…….$1,200,000. WOW!
The Saratoga Yearling Sale continues this evening! HOOVES CROSSED that everything goes well for all of the horses and the participants.
With Love,
Hugs to All~

Hi Zenny: An auction must be very interesting to see. Although I would be thinking now is that horse going to be alright. However, if an owner pays that much money you would hope they would be good to their horses. Anyway Zenny you got such a good home and a great trainer. Bernie is hot, hot, hot. We all can’t wait to see your foal!!!! Love you Zenny.

It was nice last night to hear the announcer at the F-T sale say such nice things about the Street Cry colt’s connection to one of my favorite four legged girls – Dance Smartly. She didn’t dance like Zenny but she was a smart girl, pretty too.

@Dottie– Hope you day is wonderful, and I also hope you got my card.
@Mike Smith–Happy Birthday to you too. Who knew??
@DJ–the way the time zones work, iget your morning prayer later in the day and the evening prayer in the morning–lol. No matter, they’re all good.
@Sunny Boyd–I appreciate your seeing spirituality in nature. I just wanted to mention that in the Bible account of Balaam and Balak, God takes the donkey’s part when his owner is beating him. So we see what God thinks of animal abuse as well. Again, NOT preaching. Don’t even want to go there. I only mentioned it because some people might not remember that story.
I’m wondering –where in the world is Dawn Conrad, also Susan in TN–I’m getting worried.
Catherine Uher–do so hope your surgery was successful.
Love to all from the fire pit of Texas –105 here yesterday. We’re getting so weary of it.
LauraJ
Well, that was the Sheikh Mo and Bernie show.
–
@Delrene, Hip # 114 was purchased by Sheikh Mohammad. He is also the owner of Bernardini. He certainly believes in his stallion! BTW, most yearlings aren’t named when they go to auction. New owners usually like to name the horse themselves.

@Kari B and @Cynthia H., since you both did so much shopping, you can start planning your September purchases. The Keeneland September catalog is now on line. :-)

Have you two considered partnering? You wouldn’t have to fight over horses, and your clothes, fascinators, and dignity would remain intact. Plus, you could double-team other bidders.

HAPPY, HAPPY day to Dottie, the queenly voice of Zenyatta!! We’d be a sorry lot of dumplings without your postings – you, too, are priceless!!

Happy birthday Dottie !!!

First order of business today – wishing the happiest of birthdays to the creator of this wonderful website where all things relating to and about Zenyatta are shared. You are priceless to all of us. A very happy birthday Dottie.
@Laura J – Hi now I am really confused. I thought he owned Bernardini too as I watched the bidding and then read Bloodhorse breaking news that his agent confirmed the Sheik – Darley, etc.purchased the colt. I sure do have lots to learn. Now in thinking about it, he owns Bernie but he didn’t own Easter Bunnette. I guess it’s very complicated, but he sure has the means to do it. I know he is committed to winning The Kentucky Derby and hasn’t accomplished that as yet. It was certainly amazing to watch all the beautiful babies. As you say, he definitely puts his faith in Bernie.
Bernie, you are the man of the hour and I know Z’s baby will be the best of them all in looks/spirit and heart. And you the special Mom to Be-take care and hope you Tango with Dottie today.

Happy YOU Day Dottie!

WOW way to go Bernie!! Of course, it means that if Bernie & your baby Little Girl was sold, there would not be enough money in the world to pay for your future Champion!!!! Although, I doubt the Mosses will be looking to sell your baby.

Happy Birthday Dottie-hope you have a wonderfull day!! Go Bernie-you are awesome. Did you all see TROTT on the Today show this AM? You may find it on the shows website. I hope it gives a big boost to all rescues by bringing this problem to the fore. Have a great day everyone.

@Dottie: May you have a wonderful day on this special day! You are an inspiration to so many!
@All: My server was having “issues” and kept crashing last night. Haven’t a clue what’s been going on here. Will try to catch up after work if server found band-aids, or sneak in for awhile at work. Will also try – again – to post on “The Fight Site”. Hugs to all.

@Deborah Richman-NO parrot joke could top that real story. Thanks for sharing. @Karen Gogue-Zenyatta would listen to us, being who she is, but we could not come close to writing as well as you. @Kennedys in San Diego-Appreciate the link about the site of the next Breeder’s Cup. Agree somewhat with the general sentiment, but what exactly was the weather like when the BC was held at Monmouth? Maybe the dates could be changed if the venue was to be in the east. @Charlotte Farmer-I’m speechless. Hope and Carson? I couldn’t warm up the audience for either of them. As way of proof, here is today’s joke–Karl and Milly were lying in bed one night. Carl was falling asleep but Milly was in a romantic mood and wanted to talk. She said “You used to hold my hand when we were courting.” Wearily, Karl reached across, held her hand for a second, and rolled over to try to fall asleep. A few moments later, she said “Then you used to kiss me.” Mildly irritated, he leaned across, gave her a peck on the cheek and settled back down to sleep. Thirty seconds later, she said “Then you used to bite my neck.” Angrily, he threw back the bed clothes and got out of bed. “Where are you going?” she asked. “To the bathroom to get my teeth,” he replied.

Dear Dottie,
I could not hope to top the wonderful birthday video card posted by Kari B., but would like to add my own best wishes to those of all of the terrific posters on this site.
THANK YOU for keeping our connection to Zenyatta alive and vibrant.
THANK YOU for sharing your dear John with us. You have his ear as well as his heart (and ours, too).
THANK YOU for sharing your life with us, making us truly feel a part of Zenyatta’s “inner” family.
THANK YOU for all of your efforts in founding and maintaining this Diary site, which has spurred more than a few dear friendships which will last a lifetime, as well as selfless acts of goodwill for the love of all horses.
THANK YOU for being YOU.

Happy Birthday to Dottie!!!! Sorry I get so carried away with the exclamation points – I really do know better, but I did want to emphasize that I hope you have a wonderful day today, Dear Dottie! Thank you so very much for all you do for all of us who love our Zenyatta so much. I sincerely wish you a most beautiful day.

@Kari Bussell: You win the night owl contest hands-down! You were still commenting away as I was in bed, imbibing TUMS, after that late night KFC dinner with the Dumplings.
@signofthetimes: I have to ask, which is the “gorgeous guy?” Superfection or the Sheik?
@Laura J: Thank you very much for posting the link to the Keeneland September catalogue. Great! I love your suggestions, and will have to speak to Kari B. about forming a racing partnership (although a little lady wrestling in the aisles always enlivens the sales!).

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DOTTIE!
thank you for all you do…
