Good Morning,
Here is the activity from last evening in Saratoga. The view above is from the Art Gallery Walk…which goes around to The Buyers’ Lounge. Many potential bidders have assigned seats located right around the sales ring. You may use these seats during the auction or bid from wherever you would like.
The sales area is open to everyone. Any fan may attend a sale and observe what is happening from various areas in the sales pavilion. It is really quite a fascinating process to watch. There are so many facets to our industry that all work together to make it such an interesting and challenging business.
This Saratoga Yearling Sale is conducted in the evening…so people ‘dress’ for the occasion. At this point in a sale, your ‘homework’ is basically completed as far as deciding on the horses you’d like to bid upon during the session. You have reviewed the pedigrees to see how the individuals would fit into your racing and breeding programs. The physical examinations of the horses have been completed by the prospective buyers and their teams.
Another important step is to have your veterinarian examine your prospective purchases IN DEPTH to be sure the physical condition of each yearling you are interested in meets your satisfaction. He or she will check and double-check the horse’s throat (for breathing purposes), basic conformation, and x-rays.
If the yearling passes all of the requirements you may have for purchase, you then need to ‘mentally appraise’ the horse. In other words, how much do you feel this horse is really worth in today’s market….and most importantly…how much are YOU willing to spend to own this colt or filly? This step is truly very important. You want to be sure you have really decided in your own mind how much this horse is worth TO YOU!
Then…let the BIDDING BEGIN!
Last night’s auction was very active. People really want to purchase and own good horses. They look to the future and the hope of running in BIG RACES! That is the driving force behind our industry. Obviously, a high purchase price does NOT guarantee success…but it must be considered. After all, LOOK AT ME! That is what helps to make this sport so much FUN!
At this time, I’d like to send a HIGH HOOF to my dear BERNIE. His yearlings sold for very substantial prices. Hip #1 was an “OUT”….which means she was withdrawn from the sale before it started. This may happen for a number of reasons.
Then the action really began. BERNIE had a colt sell for $750,000…and fillies sell for $950,000 and $600,000…to name a few.
The ‘sales topper’…which means the highest price horse sold during the entire session….was a Medaglia d’ Oro colt who is a half brother to the Kentucky Derby winner, SUPER SAVER. This yearling is named Superfection! His winning bid…….$1,200,000. WOW!
The Saratoga Yearling Sale continues this evening! HOOVES CROSSED that everything goes well for all of the horses and the participants.
With Love,
Hugs to All~

Brenda S: Sterling words — laser & tungsten. Without the art of a venture, there is too shallow a taproot to cultivate or anchor much for the future. Thanks to your thoughts, there are the words.

Hi Zenny!! I love it– no one sells their grandchildren –I bet Mrs Moss will want to be with you from your first signs of labor–I can just imagine what that time will be like for your family and Team Z. Have a good night Zenny and stay cool.

@Sharon Call-A lot of things that ordinary citizens would vote in if given the are not done because they are not given the opportunity to vote. We’ll see about this one.

Ms. Zenyatta – Your Bernie’s baby, Hip No. 114 baby out of Easter Bunnette just sold for 1.2 million. Incredible to watch. He is beautiful, wow, that is lots of money that gets thrown around during the auction process. He doesn’t even have a name yet. Just # 114. I will hopefully attempt to keep track of him and perhaps Bloodhorse will say who owns him now and what his name will be. I hope all these horses go to good owners and trainers with a conscience. Bless these little babies.
I’m so glad your baby will remain in your family I’m sure for life.
And thanks Kennedy’s for info on Ca. auction. I think it would be most interesting to attend just as a visitor. Quite by accident a few years back I visited New York, Saratoga racetrack area and there was a filly/mare sale going on. Beautiful Mom’s and babies.

Hip 114 was awesome! A high brother to Havre De Grace…only a Bernardini-Zenyatta foal could be better.
Especially Horses
Of course meant to say a “half-brother”…can’t watch the sale and type at the same time, lol.

Your Bernie sure is a hot stud, Zenny! I’m so glad you two found each other. I love you!
I got home from work and checked yesterday’s diary and I am so overwhelmed with all of the love and support I’ve gotten from all of you regarding my post about my friend Vivian and her dog Winston. It brought me to tears. I was going to thank each of you individually, but there’s so many of you I’m scared I’d leave someone out. I knew I could count on my fellow animal lovers. I’m going to call Vivian and let her know how many people are praying for her. Hugs, Debbie
@Jan – Thank you for the link to Rainbows Bridge. That is a wonderful site. I’ll be sure to pass it on to Viv.
@Sunny Boyd and Brenda S – Thank you so much for your poems. They are both absolutely beautiful. I wrote them down so I’ll always have them on hand and I’m going to share them with Vivian.
@signofthetimes and J Smith – Vivian has already contacted a mobile vet. That’s one of her biggest problems. He’s been to her house a few times to see Winston, and Winston got so bad Sunday night that she called the vet first thing Monday morning and was told that he was on vacation for a week. Apparently he’s the only one in town. She definitely wants Winston to go at home, so she’s hoping he can make it another week. I talked to her this morning and she said he’s doing better today, probably because the weather is cooler than it has been.

@Especially Horses-LOL-I am having the same problem!!

@Kari Bussell. My how times have changed. I remember waiting for the mailman to deliver my Bloodhorse magazine so I could get the sales results and check the price of the yearlings on my “wish” list. Oh, here comes a Bernardini.
Cynthia H.
Making some virtual bids, here. Counting my wad. Hope I have enough left after purchasing #140 to go for #160.

I saw the prices the horses were bringing Zenny and while I am happy for all concerned, it made me smile to remember the price they paid for you. I think you were the best bargain in the history of horse racing. I hope Ann and Jerry keep all your foals.
Kari Bussell
@Cynthia H- LOL…You are bad…in a great way. I will now, pay special attention to 140 & 160!…might out bid you.

Does anyone remember the name of the first yearling to go through a sales ring and fetch 1 million? His name is on the tip of my tongue, just can’t recall his name, but I believe he never made it to the races.
Especially Horses

Kennedys…thank you for all the interesting links! And I do love Uncle Mo…so glad he is doing so well.
Kari…had to get the kleenex after watching that lovely, touching video.
Shari V…Your students are so lucky to have such a creative, caring teacher! The way you incorporate horsey knowledge and fun into your curriculum is unique and so enriching. Also, hugs and prayers to you regarding everything you are going through with your brother.
Re: Bernie…he is so handsome and adorable you can’t help but love him. Whew! His kids are amazing and expensive! And as so many of you have said above, Bernie’s foal with our Queen will be priceless and so loved!
I hope that all the beautiful yearlings are loved and have good lives :)
Terry…very cute parrot joke! This is not a joke but a real story…I knew someone who received a parrot all boxed up in a crate. He thought, “poor thing must hate it in there..”. When he opened the crate and took out the parrot, the parrot looked at him and said, “Bless you!”
Kari Bussell

@Kari Bussell and Cynthia H. I’ve been reading your “back and forths”. Cynthia you gave me a good giggle with your ”Made fabulous offer for #140 privately.” Oh, so that’s why they withdrew her from the sale. Love it. The best of luck with her, I think you got a champion.
