Good Morning,
Here is the activity from last evening in Saratoga. The view above is from the Art Gallery Walk…which goes around to The Buyers’ Lounge. Many potential bidders have assigned seats located right around the sales ring. You may use these seats during the auction or bid from wherever you would like.
The sales area is open to everyone. Any fan may attend a sale and observe what is happening from various areas in the sales pavilion. It is really quite a fascinating process to watch. There are so many facets to our industry that all work together to make it such an interesting and challenging business.
This Saratoga Yearling Sale is conducted in the evening…so people ‘dress’ for the occasion. At this point in a sale, your ‘homework’ is basically completed as far as deciding on the horses you’d like to bid upon during the session. You have reviewed the pedigrees to see how the individuals would fit into your racing and breeding programs. The physical examinations of the horses have been completed by the prospective buyers and their teams.
Another important step is to have your veterinarian examine your prospective purchases IN DEPTH to be sure the physical condition of each yearling you are interested in meets your satisfaction. He or she will check and double-check the horse’s throat (for breathing purposes), basic conformation, and x-rays.
If the yearling passes all of the requirements you may have for purchase, you then need to ‘mentally appraise’ the horse. In other words, how much do you feel this horse is really worth in today’s market….and most importantly…how much are YOU willing to spend to own this colt or filly? This step is truly very important. You want to be sure you have really decided in your own mind how much this horse is worth TO YOU!
Then…let the BIDDING BEGIN!
Last night’s auction was very active. People really want to purchase and own good horses. They look to the future and the hope of running in BIG RACES! That is the driving force behind our industry. Obviously, a high purchase price does NOT guarantee success…but it must be considered. After all, LOOK AT ME! That is what helps to make this sport so much FUN!
At this time, I’d like to send a HIGH HOOF to my dear BERNIE. His yearlings sold for very substantial prices. Hip #1 was an “OUT”….which means she was withdrawn from the sale before it started. This may happen for a number of reasons.
Then the action really began. BERNIE had a colt sell for $750,000…and fillies sell for $950,000 and $600,000…to name a few.
The ‘sales topper’…which means the highest price horse sold during the entire session….was a Medaglia d’ Oro colt who is a half brother to the Kentucky Derby winner, SUPER SAVER. This yearling is named Superfection! His winning bid…….$1,200,000. WOW!
The Saratoga Yearling Sale continues this evening! HOOVES CROSSED that everything goes well for all of the horses and the participants.
With Love,
Hugs to All~

@Happy Harriot!
I agree, Zen’s foals would be priceless…no amount of money would be enough. and in some sense, nothing against Bernie, but as Mike indicated, no man good enough for Zenyatta! I too am delighted the Mosses will be keeping the first foal and I hope they would consider not selling any of them…
Thanks for the post…it is always a daily delight!

Zenny and Dottie, Sarah too, thanks for today’s great description of the action last night at Saratoga. I was glued to it and will be again tonight. It is impossible to imagine what your foal would bring if Mr. and Mrs Moss could ever bring themselves to part with it. I was so proud of Bernie and his babies. Today in Fort Erie it’s cooler and we have had some rain so I hope it’s been the same for you and your friends. Tomorrow you can hope for some cake to celebrate Dottie’s birthday, I’m sure you’ll be sending her a big kiss. Hugs and kisses darling girl.

@Brenda S – I don’t have a dumpling tag but will be on the lookout for you and Vic with yours on.
@Barbara Grimaldi – I tried to get tickets for the Travers, but they were sold out. I was able to get tickets for the Alabama and the Woodward. Will you be at either of these?

.
In real life I would have never played yesterday, or any day when the conditions aren’t right but I’m playing these for Education, Granny, and for Z-FUN. I cap for a fast track and if it’s not, wait for a race that is. There is always another one and if there’s not it won’t matter.
.
SARATOGA –
Race 2 – “Saratoga Snacks” got second honors and went off second favorite. Man it’s hard to beat Pletcher but on the other hand winning never gets old, just ask Todd. Granny gets another one. She keeps stats but I haven’t looked them over but I think she is up a little. -$10.00
.
Race 4 – We passed this race, “Anonymous Donor” was 8/5 and flirting with 2-1 with two mins. to go so I saved 10 bucks. Granny cashed both tickets and put another buck in one of her many cookie jars. Then she said, “ I told you so, you should bet to Show”. I hate it when that old lady starts needling me, but I just take it and be nice. I think it’s good for her, keeps her mind active. VOID BET
.
-$10.00 Today +280.20 Starting the new week.
.
@BABY PLAYS – Both tracks are closed. They need a nap. ******** 08-09-11 (3:00 pm est.)
.
SARATOGA – DARK
.
DEL MAR – DARK
.
Got to wash the diapers, LOL
.
@SALE – WinStar Farm had a contest to name “Superfection”, you are not kidding, WOW, in these times, I hope it’s not a Green Monkey.

‘Truth in advertising’ http://www.tastingtable.com/entry_detail/sf/4872 . .. popped up, introducing . .. cousins?
LauraJ
@Gloria Jeanne, considering that Zenyatta’s nephew sold for $4.2 million, I’d guess that a Zenyatta foal would go for at least $5 million, maybe higher if a good bidding war got going. Not that it will ever happen; everyone assumes the Mosses will keep her foals. After all, who sells their grandchildren?
Lisa g
@LauraJ: Love it, who sells their grandchildren…Nope, not Ann and Jerry. We know her baby(ies) are Pricess, but $5MIL or more, yep, and being with the Hot Stud like Prince B, might just increase it a million or so…I am hoping date #2 will be when Frankel retires…What a duo…
DJ
To Kc: Yum Dum! Looks great for Happy Hour with Sho chiku bai :) Chopsticks anyone?

Bernie’s baby’s are as handsome as he is. When I saw him at the track and at the farm he carried a special presence. I was very impressed with how he carried himself. His baby’s are well balanced, pretty and have all the right parts in the right places. You picked a great partner Z!
Love You
Rita Stack
Z, thanks for sharing all this great information with us. lots of hugs to you.

@Judy Berube, thanks for the info on Pluck. Re; your post on #314, Chris McCarron founded the North American Racing Academy, which is one of three jockey schools in North America. It’s part of the Kentucky community and technical colege system. McCarron is the Executive Director and teaches as well.
