Good Morning,
Here is the activity from last evening in Saratoga. The view above is from the Art Gallery Walk…which goes around to The Buyers’ Lounge. Many potential bidders have assigned seats located right around the sales ring. You may use these seats during the auction or bid from wherever you would like.
The sales area is open to everyone. Any fan may attend a sale and observe what is happening from various areas in the sales pavilion. It is really quite a fascinating process to watch. There are so many facets to our industry that all work together to make it such an interesting and challenging business.
This Saratoga Yearling Sale is conducted in the evening…so people ‘dress’ for the occasion. At this point in a sale, your ‘homework’ is basically completed as far as deciding on the horses you’d like to bid upon during the session. You have reviewed the pedigrees to see how the individuals would fit into your racing and breeding programs. The physical examinations of the horses have been completed by the prospective buyers and their teams.
Another important step is to have your veterinarian examine your prospective purchases IN DEPTH to be sure the physical condition of each yearling you are interested in meets your satisfaction. He or she will check and double-check the horse’s throat (for breathing purposes), basic conformation, and x-rays.
If the yearling passes all of the requirements you may have for purchase, you then need to ‘mentally appraise’ the horse. In other words, how much do you feel this horse is really worth in today’s market….and most importantly…how much are YOU willing to spend to own this colt or filly? This step is truly very important. You want to be sure you have really decided in your own mind how much this horse is worth TO YOU!
Then…let the BIDDING BEGIN!
Last night’s auction was very active. People really want to purchase and own good horses. They look to the future and the hope of running in BIG RACES! That is the driving force behind our industry. Obviously, a high purchase price does NOT guarantee success…but it must be considered. After all, LOOK AT ME! That is what helps to make this sport so much FUN!
At this time, I’d like to send a HIGH HOOF to my dear BERNIE. His yearlings sold for very substantial prices. Hip #1 was an “OUT”….which means she was withdrawn from the sale before it started. This may happen for a number of reasons.
Then the action really began. BERNIE had a colt sell for $750,000…and fillies sell for $950,000 and $600,000…to name a few.
The ‘sales topper’…which means the highest price horse sold during the entire session….was a Medaglia d’ Oro colt who is a half brother to the Kentucky Derby winner, SUPER SAVER. This yearling is named Superfection! His winning bid…….$1,200,000. WOW!
The Saratoga Yearling Sale continues this evening! HOOVES CROSSED that everything goes well for all of the horses and the participants.
With Love,
Hugs to All~

Hi Queen Z
Your wrote: “This yearling is named Superfection! His winning bid…….$1,200,000. WOW!” WOW IS RIGHT!!
However, if the Mosses were to sell one of YOUR dear yearlings ~ she/he would go through the roof, I’m sure! :-D I’m happy, though, that Ann and Jerry have chosen to keep your first “baby”! TOO CUTE! HIGH HOOF!! ;-)

Hooves crossed for ALL the babies being purchased. May they have healthy and happy lives ~ not just on the race track (if they ever make it there), but for their whole life!

It was fun to watch the auction until the last colt, an AP Indy, fell and had trouble regaining his feet. He was a beautiful colt but wasn’t very happy after that. Heck, they were all beautiful. Thanks for the link Z and Dottie.

AUCTION ARE TOO EXCITING. WHEN MY HUSBAND, PHILIP AND I WOULD GO, THEY SOLD TACK FIRST AND HORSES LAST. THESE WERE ALL BREED AUCTIONS. PHILIP WOULD TELL ME TO SIT ON MY HANDS SO I DIDNT BID ON ALL THE HORSES. I WAS GOOD UNTIL THE SADDLES AND BRIDLES AND SILVER STUFF FOR WESTERN RIDING STARTED BEING SOLD. I STILL LOVE BLING ON WESTERN TACK. THE HORSES SOLD YESTERDAY WERE GREAT. I NEVER THOUGHT THAT MUCH MONEY COULD BE SPENT SO FAST. HI TO ALL ZENNIE FANS..SHERRY D. WV

Dear Queen Zenyatta and the Royal Baby
.
Your baby is priceless, based on the current sales at Saratoga, but more importantly based on YOU being the Royal Mum.
.
In every aspect of your beautiful life, you give hope to your fans. Your beauty, dancing, racing, heart all inspire us. And also inspiring, in it’s own way, is the fact that you had a little skin problem (can we ladies ever relate!), and so your “value” at auction was quite low. Some may say you were a wallflower at the Ball. (Again, we ladies can relate!) BUT – BUT – BUT – LOOK WHO IS QUEEN IN THE END!!
.
So after all the elements are calculated in some universal algorithm, YOU are the true QUEEN. And that inspires every one of us (including the guys). That’s why we love you so much, with undying respect for your Voice, Dottie, your Trainer, John, your elegant Owners, Ann and Jerry.
.
Big Hugs to our Queen and her Pals, and also to the lovely souls at Saratoga

Hi Beautiful Girl! Thank you for the fascinating look at this part of the industry. We learn so much from you and Dottie! I love to watch and rewatch the video of you being sold at Keeneland. Little did anyone know how great you would turn out be and how much Joy you would bring to so many. This was in part due to the wonderful hands you fell into in each step of your development and training . As far as I can tell, it was all a ‘God thing.’. Let’s face it, Baby, YOU are a God-thing! God bless you n yours. Love you forever. Xxxooo

Good afternoon my sweet Zenny & Dottie. It was TOO MUCH FUN watching the Saratoga Sale, Day #1 last night. As i said, it was amazing to see how outstanding your Bernie’s colts & fillies are. Just beautiful individuals — balanced, intelligent-looking and beautiful, expressive faces. Boggles the mind to think what a knock-out this Bernie-Zenny baby will be & it’s impossible to think that it won’t have racing talent. Of course, looks aren’t everything. I remember Ronnie Turcotte saying that he never paid much attention to looks because there are so many great-looking thoroughbreds, but lots of them can’t run. Last night I was thinking that like shopping for anything, great looks must be the ultimate distractor. Then I wondered: why is it that beauty makes it so hard to think straight?
I spent a few minutes this morning previewing some of the yearlings that go on sale tonight. There are several Bernardini’s and Medaglia d”Oro has another couple of yearlings on the block. For pure WOW! FACTOR though, I thought #141 by Tapit was a great-looking individual who seems to have “I’m a star” written all over it. I’m also curious to see what the LE Galileo (# 115) brings. And another GREAT looker in terms of balance and sheer presence is #143 by the beautiful Rock Hard Ten.
Another thing I thought about last night as I watched one lovely yearling after another enter the ring was what Sir Winston Churchill said about horses (whom he loved): “There’s something about the outside of a horse that’s good for the inside of a woman or a man.”
HUGS to all and KISSES to my sweet, sweet girl.
Arlene
Good afternoon Zenny and all,
I looked in on the auction last night and saw Bernardini’s REMEMBER auctioned off!
Interesting! There was a filly that sold for $100,000 and I think she is the one that reared up and the auctioneer said she didn’t like the bid !!! Maybe she’ll be the one to watch when she gets to racing!!! Huh, Zenny?
May all have blessed days.
