Good Morning,
I hope all of you had a wonderful weekend! My Team had a great deal of excitement in the Clement Hirsch-G1 again this year. ZAZU almost did it!
As you may know, this is a race I won 3 times in a row during my racing career. ZAZU ran in The Hirsch G-1 last Saturday at Del Mar…and closed strongly to just miss by a head. She cut to the rail at the top of the lane…and made a real race of it during the stretch run. ULTRA BLEND won closing on the outside.
I’d like to congratulate her connections. This G1 win was especially emotional for jockey, Tyler Baze. He has recently recovered from a very difficult injury…and this meant a great deal to him! Tyler, it is so great to see you back in action, healthy, and riding in top form again!
It was tremendous to see the other Grade 1 stakes races around the country. TIZWAY did a great job earning his victory in The Whitney and SEAN AVERY earned his win in a tight Vanderbilt finish! Other stakes racing over the weekend also provided lots of thrilling finishes. I hope your handicapping was very astute and proved to be quite LUCKY!
David is presently at Saratoga. The yearling sales action is now in full swing. Last month, Fasig Tipton started it all with their Kentucky July Sale. This evening, their Saratoga Yearling Sale is on center stage.
Lane’s End does have a consignment there. In the above photo, this yearling they are offering is being inspected for purchase by a veterinarian. That is just one of the stages involved when purchasing a yearling at auction. The ‘sales’ involve a great deal of homework and hard work…yet it is extremely energizing to anticipate the ‘future’.
Good luck to all involved with these horses and the sale.
If you’d like, you may watch the live feed of this auction on-line. It is intriguing to see how all of the action takes place in the sales ring.
Go to Fasig-Tipton.com….click on Fasig-Tipton TV….then go to LIVE AUCTION. This will give you the up-to-the-minute streaming. The Saratoga Yearling Sale begins tonight at 7 Eastern Time with Hip # 1…a Bernardini filly . Now….isn’t this TOO CUTE!
With Love,
Hugs to All~

PS…A HIGH HOOF to MY BERNIE. His foals had a very successful weekend of racing on both coasts!

Ok, typos for me! :) wathed should be “watched” and between just and seeing should have been “love”

Wow, I have to say watching the sales live is addicting! Waiting for Hip 42 and 43 – two Bernardini’s to come into the Sales Ring.

@Karen Gogue—just checked my emails and got yours, thanks

I was so proud of Zazu and Tizway. I wish you could visit Tiznow for a date next year but I think he is too big for you. I am not sure if he is as tall as you but pretty close. I think the foal would be too big and that would be dangerous for you (at least that is what I hear). Something FUNNY for you to know though – when I visited Winstar the tour guide showed us the breeding shed. He said they would build whatever kind of steps or whatever was needed for the stallions there to have a date with you. I thought that was too cute as you and Dottie say. Love you forever!
Anne
Gainesway had a huge poster picture of Zazu on the barn wall today at the sales in Saratoga. It sure was fun seeing all these babies but the sad part is …they never will be able to run and play as they once did…it is now down to business. You could see they were nervous and wanted some love and affection. This is even before tonight’s commotion. Good luck to all of them… A few already sold for some hefty prices.

Hi Zenyatta. Wow, you are right, it was a great weekend of racing. Zazu was great – also love St. Trinians. We will be there for the Pacific Classic and I think/hope Blind Luck will be racing. Wow, wouldn’t it be great to have another mare as Horse of the Year!!! High hoof to her and her connections. Love you big girl. Hoping next year to visit you – will be looking so forward to it. Can’t wait to see you and your foal. Wow, I was thinking about that this morning when I was listening to all the comments being made of the sales at Saratoga. Just wondering if your first foal will be at the sales. I am sure Jerry and Ann would want to keep your baby/babies. Please stay comfy and cool, eat well for two and have a great time grazing and being with your BBFs. Love you, Angel in Disguise.

A $950,000 Bernardini ! Looked like she might have gone for 1 million. The auctioneer tried real hard to get there.

@Lil from KY, yes, I saw LSC. He was entertaining two tour groups–ours (the regular 10 a.m. tour) and another group from one of the horse farm bus tours. The horses got double attention. He still has his pinups of Zenyatta in his run-in shed. He did not play soccer for us, though. The horses were all in a good mood. It had rained, and at 10 am it was almost cool, so most of them were in the mood to come over and visit. Gramps and Kiri were exceptions. Clever and Ogygian even came out from under their trees. Prized, their latest retiree, is in Awad’s old paddock. He’s just getting the hang of this carrot thing. I had the most fun with Patton. He really, really wanted to be scratched. There’s another new horse whose name I can’t remember. He’s a gelding who is slated to be part of the retraining program. We got to watch him run and jump and buck in his paddock. Handsome boy.

If anyone in the OH-KY-IN tristate area is interested, River Downs will be having an Old Friends fundraiser on Sept 5. Last year they had some good stuff-prints, posters, hats, and memorabilia.

BREAKING NEWS
Bernardini Yearlings Bring $750,000, $600,000
Sheikh Mohammed and his entourage got busy early during opening session of the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga select yearling sale in upstate New York Aug. 8.
Barbara Wood
@Lil in Ky–please keep us posted on your rehab or recovery.
@Laura J–just guessing, but I seem to remember that Awad and Kiri’s Clown were buds/former competitors and would still race each other along the fence.
@Margaret–thanks so much for the info on Dancinginmydreams. What a beautiful name. Glad she’s doing well.
@Catherine Uher–if you’re reading, I’ll be praying for you tomorrow. We’ll anxiously await a report.
The world seems to be going crazy. We had a home invasion this morning 2 blocks from our house. The heat is oppressive–106 here today. When it gets so unbearable, I think of you, sweet Z, in your lush paddock and all that green. Hope you get rain but no storms. (We’d even take those in your place just to get some rain!) Love you always, dear girl.
Delrene
Wow Ms. Zenyatta – Your Bernardini’s babies are very popular ….. and getting top prices. Congratulations B-boy.
And today in the mail, I got my Z-name tag. Thank you so much Diana.
I’ll wear it proudly next time I go to Del Mar! ( which might be this Wed.)

I’ve had a very sad evening and I know I can count on my fellow Zenny lovers to make me feel better. I had dinner with one of my best friends, Vivian, and she is going to have to put her beloved dog, Winston, to sleep very soon. He’s an English Mastiff and he is 11 1/2 years old. That’s ancient for a dog that size. I went to visit him and was alarmed by all the weight he’s lost. The biggest problem is that he can no longer control his hind legs. He falls down and Vivian has to pick him up, but she only weighs about 115 lbs. and is really struggling. She does not want him to suffer, so his time is coming very soon. She’s like me – she’s single with no kids and her animals are her life. I’m sharing this with you because I would just like for all of you to say a prayer for Vivian and for Winston. Hugs, Debbie

SALLY B: such a DVD already exists? I must find one!!!! KARI B: I love you for posting that link–I saved it, but I want a DVD of my own… Does anyone know how John’s mom is? Hope she is feeling better. Have to add here that I’m nuts about Zazu and Blind Luck and look forward to watching them go!!!! Neophyte question of the week: do TB owners use a stallion more than once with their mare? Will Z and B’s foal be the only one? I ask because I am a student here!!!!

I just saw Hip No. 80 slip and fall ( Dad is A.P. INDY. That was scary… They were saying that fake green grass is slippery and he has slippery shoes. I sure do hope he is ok. He appeared ok.
I think he is the last sale of the evening.

Dear Stephanie:
Good for you and best of luck. I have been in contact with Kostas H. from Dream Team Racing Stable about my love for Mucho Macho Man. He and the rest of that organization seem like really great people. Good luck with your ownership partnership. Please let us know the horse’s name so we can follow along with you. Hugs, J.B.

@ Debbie G. This is so very sad. My Jericho is also 11yrs. 6 months and though not as large as a Mastiff he is a big dog. And he’s “THE man in my life.” So I know exactly how your friend is feeling. I dread losing my boy but try not to think about it. Is Winston doing too poorly to try acupuncture? It saved Jericho’s foreleg when he was younger and at the time, there were tons of dogs coming in for hip/hind leg issues. It might be worth a shot — and definitely worth it if Winston is uncomfortable. My heart goes out to your friend but she’s also very lucky to have someone in her life as compassionate as you.
@ ALL: I agree — watching the auctions is totally addictive! The Bernie babies mostly brought a decent price, but you could sure tell how soft the market is at this time….there were 2 A.P. Indy’s who didn’t even make $500,000 each. I thought the Medaglia d’Oro’s were also absolutely gorgeous and it was a Medaglia d’Oro that hit 1 million & change.

Dear Ann Maree:
